Amazon.com Product Description
A DVD/CD changer sure to please movie hounds and music aficionados alike, Panasonic's super-slim DVD-F86S 5-disc DVD player offers incredible format handling. It produces terrific images from standard DVD-Video discs, while also letting you play homemade DVD-R and DVD-RAM media (either yours or discs from your friends and family). On the music end, the player handles CD-R and CD-RW discs, including MP3 and WMA CDs, as well as high-resolution DVD-Audio (stereo mode only).

You also get cutting-edge features like digital "multi" re-mastering, which infuses CD music playback with interpolated high-frequency harmonics that wouldn't otherwise be present, and HighMAT (High-Performance Media Access Technology), a technology developed by Panasonic and Microsoft to ensuring digital media compatibility between PCs and consumer electronics.

The deck features a progressive-scan video processor that doubles the scan lines of an interlaced signal (from 480i to 480p) by scanning all 525 lines in 1/60 of a second for each pass. The higher-density video signal (designed for high-definition and HD-ready TVs) brings a film-like quality to DVD images. Composite- and S-video outputs accommodate most other televisions.

A feature called 4:4:4 signal processing converts recorded luminance and color-difference signals from 8 to 10 bits and upsamples color signal data, all with the aim of rendering vivid colors, flat luminance signal response, and minimal picture noise. The Direct Navigator and playlist playback features let you access navigation menus and custom playlists on DVD-RAM discs recorded on Panasonic DVD recorders.

DVD-Audio offers super high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound. DVD-Audio discs provide incredible storage capacity and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs. Most DVD-A discs offer both high-resolution surround-sound and high-res stereo (2-channel) programs; the DVD-F86S decodes only the stereo programs.

To appreciate full DVD-Audio resolution, you'll need to listen through the player's analog rather than digital outputs. For enjoyment of Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS 5.1-channel surround sound, feed the player's coaxial digital audio output to a compatible audio/video receiver

The DVD-F86S also boasts features like MPEG digital noise reduction (mosquito/block/3D), depth enhancer, audio-only function (video circuit off), picture mode selection, slow and fast audio playback, and Dialogue Enhancer (which boosts the volume of the center channel during Dolby Digital 5.1-channel presentations).

What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars good piece, horrible interface.......2006-10-20

This item has great functionality, features, etc. However, it has one of the worst design and interface issues of any piece of electronics I own (so 3 stars instead of 4); examples:

-Most of the buttons are UNDER the DVD tray. This means if you want to put in a C/DVD and play it, you open the tray, peak UNDER the tray to find the disc number, then press it. There shouldn't be ANY buttons under the tray, where it's hard to see!

-Too much button pushing required to play c/dvd. First you have to press the applicable disc # button, then you wait until it loads up the disc and knows what it is, then you have to press play. It should just play the disc when you press the disc #.

-Too much button pushing required to change disc on remote: In order to change the disc, you have to press the "Disc change" button, then the disc #, and there is no "disc skip" button on the remote. What a pain!

Otherwise, it works well and is a great unit for a functional, upscaling CD/DVD changer. If you can deal with the frustrating controls and interface, I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Good player when it works.......2006-04-08

The audio and video quality of this player were both good when it worked. The menus are a bit cumbersome but I was willing to put up with that for the price paid. The downside to this player is that it only worked 1 year. I didnt know much about panasonic's reliability before this player. Now i know.
Buyer be warned.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every bit of money spent.......2006-02-25

This machine is a knockout. Plays all kinds of discs seamlesslessly and the remote for a change is very user friendly. Its a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars the price is right :-).......2006-02-18

The price was right!I recieved it in record time! I recieved it within 24 hours which I wasn't expecting. The package came in excellent condition and easy to follow instructions for setting up. So far it plays excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Panasonic DVD 786 silver.......2006-02-12

Great machine you can scale the dvd picture manually to what you
want or use remote presets for standard aspect ratios, which is great. The audio is almost perfectly balanced with optional center channel dialog enhancement. The audio is REALLY good when optomized very clear, and able to upscale 48Hz to 96Hz on taylor made mp3 . The function of the changing mechanisim is fat solid and faster than my philips machine, about 6 seconds between DVD discs. The manual is probbaly the worst I have seen, very disjointed and has you flipping from the back cover where there is a diagram of the remote with page numbers pointing to the remote buttons, ultimatley having the user fishing for answers, steep learning curve. DVD video play back is great and very error free with the usual detal, brightness, gamma options with also black depth level depth enhancement. The front panel function is also very good giving the user direct access to all five discs and changing functions and visual indication of the status of the player and discs. Overall very happy.
