Amazon.com Product Description

Record your home movies and your favorite TV programs easily to DVD disc with the Panasonic DMR-ES20 progressive scan recorder/player, which can record to write-once DVD+R and DVD-R media or rewritable DVD-RW and DVD-RAM discs (the latter being a great choice for temporary storage of recorded material as it can be rewritten more than DVD-RW). It's easy to record TV programming with the built-in analog TV tuner with RF pass-through and seven-day electronic programming guide (EPG). In addition to standard DVD movie and CD audio discs and its compatible recordable formats, the DMR-ES20 can play back DVD+RW, CD-R/RW, VCD, JPEG, and MP3.

Panasonic's Time Slip function consists of two features designed to give you added flexibility and control when making DVD recordings: Chasing Playback and Simultaneous Record & Play. With Chasing Playback, you don't have to wait for an entire program to be recorded before watching it from beginning to end. This feature allows you to watch a program that's currently being recorded from any point that's already been recorded--while continuing to record the live program in progress. Simultaneous Record & Play allows you to record a program onto a disc while simultaneously watching any other program that's previously been recorded on the same disc.

You can set your recorder to one of five different recording speeds, each varying in recording quality and length. EP mode yields the most recording time, LP & SP modes provide less recording time with higher quality recording, and XP mode gives you the highest quality recording. There's also the FR (Flexible Recording) mode that lets you record with the best picture quality possible for the recording time and remaining space on the disc.

The Direct Navigator feature makes it easy to find a previously recorded program on a disc. A list of recording dates, times, channels and (user-entered) titles are shown on screen. With the Playlist Playback function, you can perform simple non-linear video editing using, such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, or copying selections

Jump directly to any spot on a disc and begin playback or recording right away with the Rapid Random Access function. Even if there is no sequential area of empty space available, this DVD recorder can record data on available space throughout the rest of the disc. You will also avoid searching for a blank spot to start recording, or accidentally recording over desired material.

It offers an optical digital audio output for Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound and a Firewire (also known as IEEE1394 or i.Link) for direct connection to a digital video camcorder. This recorder/player also offers the following connection options:

What's in the Box
DVD recorder/player, remote control (with batteries), AV cable, RF cable, power cord, printed operating instructions

1 out of 5 stars half dead after 1 year of use.......2007-05-26

Worked great for the first few months. Then random freezes started popping up. Now it freezes every 5 minutes while recording to DVD-RAM or DVD-RW. I now save every 2 to 3 minutes while transferring video from my camcorder.

Picture quality, even on the component outputs, was poor from day 1. So I record on this, then play on my Toshiba SD9200.

Panasonic has some great products, this is definitely not one of them. In fact, today I visited their website to check for firmware updates for this model, and saw that the webpage is a mess too. I select the DMR-ES20.EXE file for download, and after accepting the Lic agreement, am provided the DMR-E100.EXE for download !!!! That is scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as support goes Panasonic..wake up !!

3 out of 5 stars Good Features, But Not for Heavy Use!.......2007-02-19

I bought this unit late in 2005. I really put it to heavy use, converting my VHS library, and burning a lot of other stuff to DVD. Before it finally broke down, it began to make audible noises whenever it was powered up, it also began to freeze up often, and had to be rebooted. A couple of days ago, it threw an error, after failing to read a previously burned DVD. It froze up, and had to be rebooted. After restarting, I now get a fuzzy split screen image, instead of my normal satellite TV images. It appears the units primary video outputs have been fried. This unit has some good features like ease of use, and "flexible recording". This allows you to automatically record programs over 2hrs., at the best mode, on a single DVD. If you're looking for a heavy use DVD recording unit, this is not the one!

2 out of 5 stars Not for MAC owners.......2007-02-10

We got this player to hook up to TIVO and DirecTV and to playback store DVD's and home DVDs created on a mac. The player insists on setting up local channels everytime you turn it on until it is successful tuning in your channels. Since we are using it with tivo and directv, the player can not find any channels to synch. You can not seem to bypass this 'feature' This is pretty annoying.

We also had to send the first one back to Cabo Wabo since it was defective. (Cabo Wabo was GREAT with the exchange! Please do business with them.)

As for DVD playback, the box box does NOT like DVD's created with OS X. It will not play DVD-R or DVD+r disks finalized with a MAC. I have had some luck with disks burned on a PC. [...]

2 out of 5 stars Basically Sucks.......2007-01-17

I've had this recorder for over a year now. Within the first three months, the power supply went bad and screwed up the whole recorder. I had to get the whole board replaced, although it was under warranty. The operation of the unit is flaky. Sometimes it just freezes up and you have to unplug it. The player finalizes discs only half the time I try, so I only use it to watch DVDs. On that regard it is pretty good, except that for some reason it doesn't have a time remaining function for either the track or the disc. It is so frustrating I want to shout! If this is in the machine, please someone, post a review letting me know how to do it.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for the family.......2006-12-28

I bought this to record my home vcr tapes to dvd. It works great. I also thought since it had time slip I would be using it with tv shows and rewritable discs but then I got a dual tuner dvr from my cable provider and haven't had to use that feature. It is great for copying shows off the dvr when something comes on I want to send to family. Directions are practically in pigeon English and require patience. Not bad for the money and picture quality is ok. You do see a difference between the broadcast programs and ones you record on a hdtv. Fun especially getting all the old home tapes onto DVD. I would recommend this if it hasn't been replaced by something better. I have had it for around a year now and no problems.

5 out of 5 stars Convenient.......2007-01-26

I liked this DVD-R enough to buy two. I find it is easy to use once you get the hang of the control. It's a bit more complicated than a VCR but being able to record and catch-up while the program is being recorded is a wonderful feature. It lets you get up to 8 hours on a DVD-R with the Extended Play and you can erase as you watch the individual programs. If you want to save a lot of programs, you can change out the discs (or buy a machine with a harddrive instead). This machine meets and surpasses the casual user who is looking to replace their VCR's.

5 out of 5 stars DMR-ES20S DVD Recorder Silver.......2007-01-10

I have had this recorder for about 2 months now and I love it. I had some trouble, at first, trying to figure out how to erase the disk, but a call to Panasonic's help line solved my problem. I was very impressed with how fast my call was answered and how knowlegable the person was. I really like the feature that lets you watch your movie while it is still recording. This is my first DVD recorder so I cannot compare with other recorders but in any case, it more than meets my recording needs.

2 out of 5 stars Man, is this thing ugly!.......2006-12-29

Literally. I thought I just purchased a stereo deck from 1978! The bright blue display is extra tall, and serves well as a night light, even in dim mode. Once I got past the looks, it was time to try it out. This unit was purchased to replace my VCR`s for everyday recording. A Philips I purchased last year wasn`t reliable enough, and now is used for dubbing only. Setup turned out to be problematic from the getgo. I have DirecTv, and no matter what I tried it insisted on "searching" for channels when all I needed was the IN2 setting. It will not let you start from the manual channel mode! No way is this acceptable in an age where the majority of users have cable, or satellite service. I finally got it to take a by using the timer setting to record a show. Using brand new Fuji RW- discs in the LP mode produced OK pictures. Comparable to a SVHS recording except for when the picture occasionally shuttered. Trying a different disc produced the same results. You also need to set your timer to record 1 minute early, or you`ll miss part of the beginning of your show due to the super slow startup. I deemed the unit as unreliable as my Philips, so back it went.
