JVC's sleek, silvery XV-NP10S could well be called the media maven. This slender DVD player handles a range of media formats, including DVD-Video, VCD/SVCD, DVD-R, DVD-RW (video format), and recordable CDs filled with files encoded in MP3, WMA, JPEG, MPEG-4, or DivX. The XV-NP10S offers premium-quality progressive-scan video (for use with a high-definition or HD-ready TV) and extended-bandwidth, 192 kHz/24-bit audio resolution. Beyond its capabilities with optical media, the unit also boasts a memory card slot equipped to read MP3 music and JPEG images from all major memory formats: SD/MMC, SmartMedia, Compact Flash, xD, and Memory Stick.

JVC's Digital Direct Progressive Scan output, quantified as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. High-quality component-video outputs help minimize line scan and digital artifacts on compatible televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs assure compatibility with nearly any set.

A high-resolution onscreen graphical user interface (GUI) allows Windows-like interactive operation with tool bars superimposed onto the TV screen for simple point-and-click operation. Other convenience features include 3-step high-quality zoom and Screen Fill, which zooms in on a DVD image to eliminate letterbox "bars" on the TV screen.

JVC's versatile VFP (Video Fine Processor) allows 7 parameters of advanced picture adjustment, including gamma, brightness, contrast, color, tint, sharpness, and "Y delay." In addition to 2 factory presets (normal and cinema) there are two user-selectable memories.

A single set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (1 each coaxial and optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

I bought this new..and it has problems reading the memory stick and when i play some dvds, green spots come up on the tv, luckily it came with 3 month warranty, so i took it to get fixed and over 1 week passed...the lens had to get replaced..so now i have to wait for the shipment to arrive and then wait for the lens to work..the repair guy had to get my memory stick out cause i try this feature but my memory stick got stuck..there are so many problems ..thats why the price is so low ..come on its too good to be true..all those feature for such a cheap price

Good potential but somewhat flawed.......2005-02-03

I own both this JVC XV-NP10S and the much famed Philips DV642P. Both are capable of playing DivX or Xvid movies, in addition to the regular DVD/CD/MP3/JPEG.

The following is a list for the Pros and Cons against the Philips DV642P, a well considered industry norm.

Pros:
1. The media slots. Almost all the popular memory cards are supported, which is very convenient for digital camera owners. Though the display speed is somewhat slow while reading the digital memory card, it's still more convenient than burning to a disc and play.
2. Remote control. The remote is much better in design, layout and quality than the Philips, which is almost like a joke. It's easier to hold in your palm too.
3. 480P/480i/Remote switch for the resolution. When equipped with a HDTV, the best resolution is 480P. It can be easily changed by a switch at the back of the unit, although switching via remote is also possible. This is much easier than the Philips.
4. More function buttons on the face plate. Fast forward/backward can be selected directly from the face plate.

Pars:
1. Display quality. Both JVC and Philips can play media in very good quality for MPEG4s.
2. Appearance. Both are slim, and IMHO, they both look good.
3. Menu. Both are equally bad. The menu looks primitive, though functional. The truncation of file names (9 characters long) is most irritating, especially when you have many episodes downloaded from the net which have long and similar file names.
4. Both cannot play more advanced features like Qpel.

Cons:
1. Sometimes audio and video are out of sync. My Philips unit never does that.
2. Some media files play with big pixelization. For Philips, you can hit System Menu button twice. For this unit, there is no such luck.
3. Cannot be adjusted to region free.
4. Does not seem to be firmware upgradable.
5. Face plate button quality is filmsy.
6. More expensive than the Philips unit.

I cannot provide information on the long term durability because both units are fairly new. For now, I am more inclined to recommend the Philips over the JVC unit, especially at a lower price. There are some other players which are even less costly, like Norcent 220. However, I do not believe they carry momentums like these 2, and I have never used those so I cannot provide more insight.
