Amazon.com Product Description
GoVideo's VR5940 dual-deck DVD recorder/player and VCR lets you record your favorite television shows and treasured home videos not merely to VHS videocassette, but to high-quality, long-lasting write-once and rewriteable DVDs, too. The VR5940 grants the freedom to use all available DVD recording formats: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW.

For camcorder owners, transferring home movies to DVD has never been easier. A convenient front-panel IEEE 1394 DV input accepts feeds from digital camcorders for easy recording to DVD and for playback on your TV. You can choose whether to record programs to tape or disc, and the recorder's built-in NTSC TV tuner and onscreen user interface permits up to 8 timer recordings over a single month, with 5 recording speeds providing between 1 and 6 hours of content on each DVD disc.

The VR5940 features DoMiNoFX, too: a patented video-processing technology that digitally enhances and refines the picture quality during recording. This results in visibly superior recordings, and a dramatic improvement when recording from noisy source material, such as VHS tapes or weak TV signals. When recording, the unit automatically creates a new disc title every time you start a new recording. You can then add chapters to these recordings manually or have them automatically inserted at five-minute intervals.

DVD-R and DVD+R media use competitive recordable DVD formats, each offering different features and levels of compatibility. DVD-R/RW-formatted discs tend to be more compatible with computers and DVD-Video players, and are generally less expensive. The advantages of DVD+R/RW-formatted discs include potentially faster burn speeds, quicker background formatting, and the ability to stop and resume recording without error--as well as the ability to let you erase specific parts of the disc. Now you can take advantage of both formats with one component.

The VR5940's versatile playback features include progressive-scan DVD video outputs and support MP3, JPEG, and Kodak Picture CDs. A variety of video and audio inputs--including front-panel connections for fast, temporary hookups--grant connection to virtually all televisions and home theater components. Further simplifying your connections, the unit will pass both DVD and VHS signals from any of its video outputs (composite-, component-, and S-video) so you don't have to maintain multiple video feeds between the device and your television unless you're taking advantage of progressive-scanning.

The VR5940 comes with GoVideo's innovative AutoPlay feature, designed to skips DVD ads, trailers, and menus, jumping right to the start of your movie. Simply place the disc in the tray, press the play key, and the movie starts without interruption. Further, an innovative feature called YourDVD automatically searches for your preferences every time you load a DVD. The player will find and select your preferred audio, subtitle, and surround sound settings (if available) so you don't have to wade through menus to set them up yourself.

My DVD, another GoVideo exclusive, simplifies DVD player use by permanently storing the set-up preferences that--on most DVD players--need to be checked or unchecked every time you load a new DVD.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the VR5940's DVD player stands ready to deliver the full playback potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

To help you navigate the transition from VCR to DVD recording, GoVideo's "white-glove customer care" includes free telephone assistance in making your first recording, should you need it.

The item is useless. Out of the box the VCR did not work. Spent the better part of 9 months trying to find anyone who may have a working phone number or email to their customer service department. So far ZILCH. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS ITEM OR ANYTHING FROM GOVIDEO!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars GoVideo is not made to last!.......2006-06-29

I liked this dual DVD/VCR at first. I was in the middle of converting all my home movies to DVD, when it froze while formating. Now it no longer will recognize any discs. I have tried the troubleshooting that is in the manuel, with no luck. I have not been able to reach GoVideo and since my year is just up, can not return it.

2 out of 5 stars GoVideo is one of the worst companies ever.......2006-06-11

I bought a unit in November 2004 and it works okay, but won't play some commercial DVDs. I e-mailed GoVideo because I couldn't get them on the phone, and requested the update CD they mention on their website. It never came. After waiting a couple months, I called GoVideo and was told they don't bother with their e-mail, but the guy said he would send the CD out. It never arrived. A couple of months later, I called again, and was told that even though the website says the CD is available, it's not, and there is no way they can send me one. (By this time, their support had been exported to Mexico, so there was also a language barrier.) I got a friend to download the file off their website and burn me a CD. It didn't work. I called GoVideo back and finally got one of the support guys to acknowledge the problem, and after hammering on him and his supervisor, they agreed to exchange the unit for a new unit that could be updated. I got an RMA number and returned the unit. Weeks passed with no word from GoVideo. I finally called and got someone in the US who said there was no update for that machine, no repair procedure, and no way they could send me a CD! He also said that the VR5940 is no longer being offered. I pointed out it is still on the GoVideo website as a current machine. He then told me how easy it was for me to burn a CD, at which point I asked him if he was really saying it was easy for me to do it, but impossible for GoVideo. He agreed to return the machine, and send me a CD. I got the machine back, and called for the CD. It arrived, but the machine does not recognize it, so it does not update. I recommend that you avoid GoVideo at all costs.

1 out of 5 stars Laser Pickup Quit after 1+ Year.......2006-04-16

Manual complicated and not well organized. Have to admit, at first it seemed to record DVD's ok from front s-VHS input (reason I bought the unit. Competitors put these in back, or only offer composite video input). But after sharing DVDs with friends, some reported "Cannot read disk" errors.

When you spend 6-8 hrs recording in EP mode, cannot finalize the disk is frustrating and infuriating. Call to Customer Service suggested different brands of disks.

OK. I started using [one of]their recommended Verbatim DVD-R and DVD+R disks. Again I started getting non-ability to finalize. Yesterday it started not recognizing ANY disk - "Unknown disk, please check disk again". Second call yesterday to CustSvc resulted in (barely understandable India accent) suggestion to try laser head cleaner.

Now, blank disks and pre-recorded Commercial disks generate error mssg above. 3rd Call to CustSvc (very understandable girl this time) has me try an audio CD. This worked. But this implicates the laser head, and she simply directs me to repair facility because I'm out of warrantee.

I note B&H no longer offers GoVideo-hmm? Related?
