Product Description
The OPPO DV-981HD is the upconverting DVD player for the ultimate home theater experience. Built upon the highly regarded OPPO OPDV971H, the DV-981HD is ideal for high definition TV's and home theater projectors. The DV-981HD excels at making standard definition DVDs look great at high definition resolutions through the use of advanced upconverting technology that outperforms most TV's built-in upconversion capabilities. The DV-981HD makes it possible for you to enjoy your existing collection of DVDs as well as new DVD titles that will continue to be released for years to come.
Amazon.com Product Description
The DV-981HD is the latest incarnation in Oppo's highly aclaimed line of upconverting DVD players. It offers an HDMI interface (HDMI Specification 1.1), with HD upconversion ouput resolutions of 720p, 1080i, and full 1080p. This is Oppo's most full-featured player yet, and as such, it's not a DVD player for people with regular analogue sets. While the DV-981HD doesn't offer component output, and doesn't output standard or native resolution, it does represent one of the best (if not the best) upconverting DVD players out there, and it's perfect for people with HDTVs up to full 1080p who aren't ready to jump on the HD DVD or Blu-ray bandwagen. In addition to excellent upconversion, the DV-981HD offers playback of a whole host of formats including DVD-Audio, Super Audio CS (SACD), Audio CDs, HDCD, WMA, Kodak Picture CDs, all version of DivX including DivX6, as well as Xvid, .SRT, .SMI, .IDX, and .SUB file formats.
Audio Features
The DV-981HD outputs audio in stereo or in 5.1 channel surround, either via HDMI, or through the included 5.1 analogue outputs. Other connections include S-Video out, and digital coaxial and optical audio outs. It features 24-bit, 192 kHz high resolution audio D/A converters, supports virtual surround in six settings, and has built-in equalizer, channel trim, and channel delay functions.
Farudgja DCDi Technology
Rather than trying to build their own upconversion technology for this machine, the Oppo DV-981HD the DCDi Faruja technology from Genesis Microchips. In addition to upscaling a DVD's native 720x480 interlaced video to 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, Farudja technology also detects content that has gone through 3:2 pull down to convert film content to NTSC for video, and recreates the original frames by blending the fields back together. It then processes for any edit mistakes and reconstrucs an accurate signal, producing an image free of motion artifacts. The unique DCDi algorithm can also identify moving edges within an image and adjust interpolation at a pixel level to create smooth edges for on-screen objects, eliminating the jaggy edges that commonly result from other upconversion techniques. Farudja processing also uses a proprietary "TruLife Enhancement" technology to identify transitions in the image considered to be details such as skin texture, freckles or hair, and enhance those to bring more detail in an image to life on the screen. This approach avoids image artefacts common with the peaking filter approach used by other systems for detail enhancement. The Farudja system uses temporal filtering for noise reduction, and can achieve 6 to 10 dB of Noise reduction without introducing artefacts or losing sharpness in the image.
Connections:
- HDMI - High Definition Multimedia Interface: 1

- Analog 5.1 Channel Audio: 1 group (6 connectors)

No Component Video (YPbPr/YCbCr) on the DV-981HD model. This model is designed for use with a display device with HDMI or DVI digital video input.
Compared with Other Oppo DVD player models
At the time of this writing, Oppo also has the DV-970HD upconverting player, and their original OPD971H model. Of these three models, the DV-981HD is the only that upconverts to full 1080p, the other models offer upconversion to 720p or 1080i only. Both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD offer Super Audio CD (SACD) playback, the OPDV971H does not. The other major difference to consider is that the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H both use Farudja processing for video upconversion. The DV-970HD uses a different upconversion system that may not be as full featured as the Farudja. For this reason Oppo recommends the DV-981HD, or the OPDV971H for use with larger screen HDTVs 50 inches or greater, while the DV-970HD is only recommended for HDTVs smaller than 50-inches. Oppo recommends the DV-970HD for use with external video processors or scalers, and suggests careful calibration of both the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H when used with DLP HDTVs. Both of these players are good for use with DLP HDTVs, but for the best picture, some setup time is required. For disply with a DVI input on your HDTV, an HDMI-DVI adapter is required with both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD models.
What's in the Box
Oppo DV-981HD upconveting DVD player, a High-quality certified HDMI cable with gold-plated HDMI connectors, Remote control with "glow in the dark" keypad (batteries included), Stereo audio cable, Composite video cable, and User manual and warranty information.

Beautiful.......2007-07-03
Our DVDs look flawless with this player (we view on a Sharp Aquos 42"), and the all region option is great. My old DVD player would play PAL, but not all regions. The pictue is amazing (Fassbinder's "Lola" with it's Douglas Sirk-ian colors is stunning). Definitely glad I bought this! The missing star is for the oft-mentioned flimsy disc tray. Hopefully Oppo will address this issue with future models.
The good and the bad.......2007-07-03
I bought this unit so I could up-convert my standard DVD's to 1080P because I bought a 1080P television. The video quality on this unit was great, but there were some things they could improve. I did not like the remote, it seemed very cheap, and I could not find the code so I could program one of my other remotes to control the unit. I could not find a code for Oppo in any of my other remote code lists. I also thought the DVD tray was very cheap looking and I was afraid I would break it. If you can live with the remote and the DVD tray, picture quality was very good.
I ended up returning it and bought the Panasonic DMR-EZ47V combination VCR/DVD recorder which up-converts standard DVD's to 1080P. I really like the Panasonic, and the picture quality is just as good as the Oppo in my opinion.
A MUST for Cinephiles!!.......2007-06-28
I found this brand (OPPO) while searching the net - had never heard of it before. I have DVD's from Europe and needed something to play them with that didn't demand complex changing of settings each time. This is a GEM! You put in a DVD and the player automatically recognizes the format, and the "up converter" increases the definition and quality of the image....I couldn't be happier!! Wonderful little machine! To top it off, the price is more than reasonable. If you're a cinephile like myself and want to buy and play foreign films (oftentimes much cheaper in the original format - just go to the auction site in that country/language), grab this one!
Excellent Upscaling DVD player for the money........2007-06-27
This is an excellent upscaling player for the money and has such a clean picture compared to my old progressive scan DVD player I had before. Oppo has some great players and I would look forward to purchasing more from their product lines in the future. I'm playing this through a 47" 1080p LCD and with a little picture tweaking on my screen, the picture quality really makes my regular DVD's look noticibly better.
Best DVD.......2007-06-27
I have six DVD players, three upconverting, all major brands. This is the only one that my friends see the difference at once. The older the DVD the greater the difference. I won't go into the technical reasons but there is a reason it cost more. The customer service is outstanding, a human answers on the first or second ring and they know more than I do.I wish they made more than DVD's Great equipment. I have samsung, sony, panasonic walmart, and KLH.

Excellent Budget DVD Player for Enthusiasts.......2007-06-28
If you're putting together a High-Def Home Theater, you should have the DV-970HD on the short list for your DVD player. Besides being a universal player, it's most significant capability is that it can UPSCALE standard 480p DVD video to HD resolutions. This is useful if the deinterlacing/scaling capability of your TV/Monitor is not that great.
Another significant capability of this player is that it can do 480i over HDMI. This is what *I* use the player for, and it's great if you're using an external video processor that can provide reference class deinterlacing and scaling. In this instance, the player makes a fine digital transport for DVD.
I have also read positive things about this player's capabilities as a CD transport.
For what you get for the price, it's hard to find any fault with the 970. The documentation can be a *tad* confusing, and this is not helped by the additional "Advanced Setup Guide", which, in my opinion, only further confuses matters. (This isn't really a big deal, except that Clint DeBoer, in typical Clint DeBoer fashion, begins the guide by disparaging the standard documentation and bragging about how much better this "Advanced" guide is.)
I definitely recommend the DV-970HD! (For those of you needing 1080p up-conversion, consider the DV-981HD.)
Good product........2007-06-27
The up conversion to HD is not very obvious to me. Otherwise I am very pleased with it.
OPPO DVD Player.......2007-06-27
Rated at 4 1/2 stars, the only reason the OPPO does not get 5 stars is the remote. Small buttons - impossible to read in the dark.
The rest of the OPPO is 5 star quality
The picture and sound quality are fantastic.
The OPPO is replacing a high end Pioneer SACD/DVD-A player. No complaints on the Pioneer, but the OPPO has superior picture quality and sound.
I have a 64inch Pioneer rear projection that does not have HDMI.
The OPPO does up-conversion via the component inputs to 1080i.
The SACD and DVD-A as well as the DTS and DD sounds crisper than the Pioneer. Even at 640p, the OPPO's picture is crisper than the Pioneer.
Previously I benchmarked other DVD players against the Pioneer and found them wanting. I'm still using the Pioneer, but the OPPO is the primary machine.
I recommend this player to anyone, but especially to owners of HDTVs without HDMI inputs to take advantage of the up-conversion of DVDs.
There are other features as well such as DIVX, multiple screen options, usb port, memory card port, a real workhorse of a player that does alot of things well.
Plays everything!.......2007-06-21
I have only had mine for a few days so I can't speak to its longevity, but so far I am thrilled! For the price you get absolutely every frill imaginable, including divx that plays great and the ability to read off a flash drive. I have tried DVD-R, DVD+R, region 1, 2, and 6 DVDs, my flash drive, and CD-R and they have all worked. The region code hack (SETUP 9 2 1 0 "0" for region free) worked fine for me.
Additionally the picture is good and you can change between 4 display options. PAL/NTSC conversion is done automatically, which my last multi-region player didn't do. The remote control glows in the dark, as an added bonus. I have not tried the HDMI as I don't have an HD TV (yet!), but given how well everything else works I do not expect to be disappointed. This is a great buy!
Worked for just over a month then broke.......2007-06-17
The DVD player worked fairly well for the first month or so. It was a little slow on startup and the remote isn't very well designed. After using it for a month - we probably watched 15 movies in that time - it stopped working. Now I'll have to try to deal with getting an exchange or refund for a product that literally worked for 35 days.

A must buy!.......2007-06-29
Everyone is choosing sides in the format war, but not me, I have both a Blu-ray player and this HD DVD player. They are both great, but if I had to choose one, it would certainly be the HD DVD format and here's why:
The HD DVD standard requires players to have a network connection and 2 video processors. On Blu-ray, these are optional. This means that HD DVD is going to get fantastic picture-in-picture extras and downloadable content with certain movies. Warner Brothers just announced that their new movie `300' will have exclusive features on HD DVD that they just couldn't do on the Blu-ray release, including: an interactive game, the ability to mix scenes and share with friends over the web, picture in picture commentary and more.
More about this player: It was easy to setup, the manual was fantastic and very descriptive. It actually fits perfectly on my Comcast cable box (they are the same size) and it has feet so the heat can escape. The sound and picture quality are amazing (you knew that already). It's a little slow to boot up (like all next-gen movie machines) but once the movie starts, who cares if it took 10 extra seconds to load? I've done 2 firmware updates using the Ethernet port, they worked perfectly (took about 20 minutes, be patient!).
Again, as someone who owns both, my preference is HD DVD. I could not be happier with this purchase and will soon be purchasing another unit for a different room in the house. Heck, at this price, even if I only used it to up-convert my standard DVDs it would be worth it!
Outstanding!!! And I mean Outstanding!.......2007-06-28
I have been watching both the Blu ray and the HD Dvd and refused to believe that I needed a $1000 player to get a good picture...and I was right. This dvd player is excellent...provided you get the right movie...may i suggest Serenity or Happy Feet at this time. The picture quality is as most critics have stated...amazing! I have a 2003 Hitachi 51 inch which has a DVI connection....if you have a DVI connection, amazon sells the HDMI to DVI cable...its better then the component hook up. Last, the price of $250 plus the five free dvds make the actual cost roughly, $150. One con..HD DVD movies run anywhere from 19.99 to $34.95.
great for HOME HD-DVDs.......2007-06-27
I bought this machine for my dad so I can make home HD-DVD movies from my Canon HV20 using ordinary DVD4 and DVD9s to send to him. Works great and cheap! Don't expect it to be nearly as easy (if at all possible) with Blue-ray.
No issues with this DVD player.......2007-06-27
The DVD player was delivered very quickly. It was easy to install (HDMI to TV and optical audio to receiver) and configure. I was watching a DVD soon afterwards, even without a firmware update. I have only played a couple of HD-DVDs but they were completely awesome to see. I hear all the bickering about HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray and 1080p vs 1080i. Enough with the analysis paralysis. Stop whining and start watching!!! It's quite amazing to watch HD programming whether from DVD or broadcast. I'm glad to have purchased this 1080i player. I have a new Panasonic 58" 1080p (700U) plasma TV and I'm very satisfied with the way HD-DVD and SD-DVDs look on this combo.
Some day I will consider a 1080p DVD player, *IF* I can see a difference, and *IF* it plays multiple formats and *IF* the prices come down.
One thing missing from this player is the ability to play MP3 CDs. Hopefully this will come with a future firmware update.

Coating of Blu-ray discs has disc rot: mould-like spots
June 21st, 2007 by Robert
In Sections: Disk Media, High Definition Robert
Now here is the bad news for Blu-ray, engadget is reporting about a potential problem with the disc media that is being described as disc rot.
Basically mould-like spots have formed and made several owner's Blu-ray discs unplayable this could be a big problem for Sony's Blu-ray format.
Many people are claiming they are discovering spots which can't be rubbed off on Blu-ray discs, we are not sure how widespread this problem is but it leaves you wondering how much damage this could cause the Blu-ray name.

Product Description
The DVP-NS75H single-disc DVD player offers 720p and 1080i upscaling through an HDMI connection (High Definition Multi Media Interface). HDMI allows the transfer of uncompressed digital audio and video signals to other HDMI equipped components, providing an uncompromised picture. It also features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, which delivers accurate and vivid images to the television. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes at the Scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically "warped" discs. Other benefits include a 12bit/108MHz video DAC (digital to analog converter), and 24 bit/192KHz audio, providing high-quality video and audio processing for vivid images and crystal clear sound.

This dvd player is a PEACH...and it is very reasonably priced..........2007-06-27
This little dvd player is simply a honey. I cannot explain to you in
technical terms what that means. I just know it performs beautifully.
It also allows me to show photo cd's I make on my computer on my larger
TV screen...and that is quite enjoyable. Well, I enjoy it...and I bet
you would, too, if you were to try it.
Great purchase!.......2007-06-23
I picked up my player today. I have another (hdmi) dvd player, but when I hooked it up to my Sony 46" LCD TV, I was really disappointed in how my dvds played on it. They were okay but not great. This player was on sale today so I bought i t and switched the 2 players. What a world of difference! The picture is much clearer and crisper. I am very impressed and extremely happy I bought the Sony. Until the HD war is over, I wanted a good player to watch dvds on on my new tv. The player is hooked up with a hdmi cable (that I payed about 12 bucks for and works great) and set to 720p (that is the resolution of my set) and I tested it out on a couple of movies (Pan's Labyrinth, X-Men 3, Casino Royale) and I noticed a big improvement over the other player in picture quality. I am extremely happy with my purchase. I also got the last one in the store!

A DECENT Player for the price.......2007-06-29
I purchased this Coby TF-DVD7107 7" Portable DVD Player model ten and a half months ago and its been on two cross-country rail trips, four road trips, and two flights and I have had no problems with it until now. The constant use has finally taken its toll as it now takes three attempts for any DVD to start and the picture is starting to pixelate badly. When I can get it to work, it does but its getting annoying dealing with all the issues so I have just purchased the Philips DCP750/37 7" Portortable DVD Player with iPod docking which I will review at a later date.
So all in all this Coby did give me my money's worth. The battery life is decent. The picture was better than I expected and the sound was adequate.
The remote control is excellent and it still contains the first batteries I installed.
I would recommend this for kids 12 and over but definitely not for the younger set because its definitely not a heavy duty player and rough use will likely make it break quicker. For the price and depending how active your lifestyle is, expect between ten to sixteen months use out of it before it starts having issues.
Just what we needed..........2007-06-28
I got this to use on the airplane to help entertain our daughter. In testing it, we had no problems and are very happy with it. The picture is great and it's very easy to use. It also feels more "solid" that other models I've seen.
Seems like some brands of portable DVD players simply die after some use. I'll be sure to update this review if this is the case for me.
Good value for the money........2007-06-27
This player serves the purpose for which we bought it - keeping our three year old son occupied on trips. The picture is actually very good for a player in this price range. We've been pleased so far; don't be afraid to give it a try.
Poor quality.......2007-06-25
The sound went out in just a few weeks so it is pretty much useless unless you want to use subtitles.
You can do better, but why, it will cost you more.......2007-06-12
I do alot of traveling for my job and the player saves my life from bordem, it makes the time go fast. The only things I would like more if it would go full screen and have longer battery life when not being used.
The sound is great the picture is great. The cost is good for what you need. I had another player that cost 8 times as much that did not do a better job. There is not much more to say.

Amazon.com Product Description
Forget thinking outside the box--now you can stop worrying about the box altogether. Coby's DVD-224 is about the size of a hardcover book, so whether you're ferrying the player between the kitchen and the bedroom or hooking it up for periodic use by the kids, the DVD-224's small size permits enjoyment of DVD programs and music CDs in just about any room you want. While not portable in the traditional sense--the unit has no screen and requires AC power--the DVD-224 is much easier to move around, set-up, and use than a traditional component DVD player.
It handles not only your DVD-Videos (both NTSC- and PAL-formatted discs, depending on your TV), but it plays your music, too--everything from standard CDs to home-burned CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3-encoded CDs. Further, you can load a disc brimming with digital photos for custom slide shows in the comfort of your home theater.
An onscreen display simplifies setup and operation, and the unit comes with a compact, full-function remote control. Other features include parental controls (with PIN lock), frame-by-frame slow motion, picture zoom (2x, 4x), and multiple-angle viewing (with applicable discs).
Like to travel? The DVD-224 won't hog space in your bag, and an auto-switching universal power supply handles inputs from AC 110 to 220 volts (50/60 Hz) for use in most countries. Accordingly, the unit's onscreen display offers a choice of 5 setup languages: English, Spanish, French, German, and Italian.
A composite-video output ensures compatibility with nearly any television and many newer computer monitors. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (choose from either optical or coaxial) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. A set of standard left/right RCA analog outputs simplifies hookup with traditional integrated amplifiers and most televisions.
What's in the Box
DVD player, remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, and a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable.

not only was the delivery quick I didn't expect the product to be so good considering the cost. I trusted the site and should have expected the best, but hey you never know. I will definitely recommend the site & item to others. Helen

the coby has been working fine for the past few months. plays dvds, audio and mp3 cds which is great for a low price...would recommend this to anyone....
Coby DVD -224 Player.......2007-06-27
I had always wanted to pick up a dvd player. The one thing that concerned me was the cost. I could not believe it when I saw this particular dvd player advertised for under 30 dollars. What could be wrong with it? Why is it so cheap? The Coby DVD-224 Player is a top quality purchase for an outstanding low price. It is easy to operate with the remote control once you turn it on and put in the dvd. I highly recommend this item.
Excellent DVD player at a reasonable price........2007-06-27
I would have given 5 stars but the remote is hard to use for fast forward and next scene jumps. Other than the remote this DVD player is a step above other units costing 10 times more. At twice the price it would still be a deal and then some.
Kaput after 90 days.......2007-06-17
After a little over three months of very light use, this cheesy little DVD player crapped-out. I recommend you spend a few extra bucks for either a better player by another manufacturer, or if you must go must get something with a COBY label on it, get the extended warranty along with it. Be forwarned this is no bargain.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent DVD/DivX Player this is a most buy.......2007-06-27
This player just plays whatever I throw at it. My only complaint is that you have to point the remote directly to the player in order for it to work.
INCREDIBLE DVD PLAYER.......2007-06-26
This unit is amazing. It takes up so little space and does a job that is fantastic. I would pay 400.00 easily for this unit. I have played some dvds I made myself on a dvd recorder and they look like high def. And the new non HD movies are just as good as HD when played on this unit. BUY ONE FAST!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
Good with some minor drawbacks.......2007-06-15
Generally works very well and a great deal for the price.
Here are a few minor drawbacks
One time it locked up and had to turn the power off and on to get it to respond (this was not a faulty dvd).
Does not respond to faulty dvds better than most other players. This could be done in software, but for some reason most dvd players do not seem to scan ahead enough and overcome these spots (all players do this to a minor degree - but most not enough).
It appears to automatically stretch aspect ratio of some dvds to fill a 16:9 screen even when i do not want it to (it does a good job at this, just rather not have this feature).
The picture quality in general of the up conversion is suberb.
This device is slow..........2007-06-08
I purchased the Philips DVP5960 player based on reading the reviews and I had high expectations for this product. When I received it, the device was SLOW. It took a good 45 seconds for this player to load a DVD with divx files. Once I started playing the divx files, I noticed the player wasn't able to handle divx files with high bitrates. The player would drop frames to compensate to keep the audio in sync with the video; which wasn't always successful, the audio would sometimes lose sync with the video.
The second problem I experienced with this player, was playing normal DVD movies. After awhile, when a movie has been playing for 45+ minutes, the video would start to pixelate and the audio would drop in and out as if there was a scratch on the DVD (which wasn't the case). To be sure there was nothing wrong the movie, I put that same disc in another player and played the movie from start to the same point where it dropped out, and my other DVD player didn't give me any problems.
The last and final gripe I had with this product was the USB (one of the primary reasons I bought this player). For starters, the USB speed is 1.1, it's not 2.0 so this was problematic as the video/audio would sometimes skip when playing a divx file, as it can only transfer the data from the USB device to the player so fast. The other problem I had was with the interface. When you browse for a file on the USB device, the UI would only display the first 5-6 characters of a file name, and this makes it extremely difficult to navigate around and figure out what is what unless you go through each file individually.
Overall, needless to say, I wasn't all that impressed with this player, and I ended up sending it back to Amazon and bought an Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, with DivX.
For the price, it's hard to beat!.......2007-06-05
Let's start out with what should be obvious -- this is a low cost DVD solution for HD TV owners. I'd go one step further to say it's really for new HD TV owners, not those who've become major TV geeks who need perfect everything. Because this DVD player isn't perfect, but for the price (currently $65 here on Amazon) it's an excellent DVD player for your HD TV.
The remote -- yeah, it sucks, but most people will end up programming a universal remote at some point and throwing this remote in the closet. It's a generic remote, it does everything you need it to do. Who sits on their couch with the DVD remote by their side?
USB 2.0 -- This is the feature I most love. I've got a 4 Gig Flash Drive and video from it all the time. Upscales nicely. The only problem is the menuing system doesn't support long file names, but otherwise I love this.
Playback -- Never had a problem with any of my DVDs, whether they're American or European (this machine unlocks in about 10 seconds). Upscales TV and film really well, the sound quality is fine, etc ...
For a $60-$80 player, I really don't know that this player could be beat. You pay a little and get a lot.

Customer Reviews:
the 6G of Portable DVD Players - Panasonic does it again.......2007-06-27
Bottom line up front: This DVD player is ideal - it is light, great battery life, evolved smart design, and looks great. It has a faux black leatherlike coating on the screen backing and the black matte finish to the player which looks cool and doesn't distract from the movie. The hinge that rotates the player from tablet-like flat to most any angle is strong and well hinged - looks like it would survive a fall. The picture is perfect without any adjustments; however, there is a button that adjusts for daylight and moonlight viewing as well as a a button to adjust brightness and color manually. The main menu allows several video adjustments (I used full digital noise reduction and full depth enhancer). Also, I enable bass boost, dialogue enhancer and sound enhancer and use Headphones Enhanced from the speaker/headphone menu. The buttons at the bottom of the player are easy to use and clearly marked for playback and the center button to the right of the dvd door allows up down and side to side menu navigation. I like a small button just above play that lets you advance the movie frame by frame with each push of the button and then hit play to resume. The picture is tight and not pixelated to my eyes. The colors are very warm, I prefer to tone them back a few notches. I noticed that this model seems to have better viewing angles. Before when watching say in the kitchen on the older DVD-LX97 I noticed that the angle had to be just right or I couldn't see the picture - not an issue anymore - great! It supports DIVX, which I plan to use extensively. I don't care about some new bells and whistles such as usb flash drive support or memory card readers - those aren't the purpose - playing DVDs right away is and this does the trick. No remote is not an issue with me, never use them for portable devices anyway. My wife really likes these Panasonic players, this is our second one, your family will too. Mine gets used every night on my bedstand to watch movies as I fall asleep so I don't have to fall asleep to Roseanne reruns on nick at night. A gadget guys best friend.
Great.......2007-06-27
It's good. Good part is we can play both PAL & NTSC DVDs and can be connected to any TV as I have taken it to India with few DVDs for in flight entertainment for my kids with 2 headphone jacks but they could also see the local movies in PAL format. It was very handy, can be connected to any TV to watch it in bigger screen if needed where we don't have other DVD player available.
The Best.......2007-06-14
My order arrived 7 days earlier than expected, that's a good sign. This DVD player is awesome, light weight, clear picture and the option I always wanted to test is playing Divx format. If you think Philips got a good name in Divx, try this one out. I played the same Dvix movie on both, this player runs so smooth that I can't even tell the laser is scanning the disc.
I haven't got to the point calling their technical support, so I can't give comment on that, but I'm sure reading one of these reviews you will encounter experiences with Philips customer reps.
Besides, don't buy the 10" Logic case for this player, it won't fit nicely.
Big things come in small packages........2007-05-22
This little DVD does the work of a big TV. And it is very compact with a screen that can be positioned. Great for travel, great for home.

Product Description
The DVP-NS57P/S DVD player features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, providing sharper images for a better viewing experience. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes at the Scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts. Sony's Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically "warped" discs. Other benefits include fast/slow playback with sound, and custom parental control.
Customer Reviews:
Great for the money.......2007-07-02
I've had this CD player since April and have had no problems with it at all. It's played all my own DVD's and rented ones with scratches just fine.
It would be nice if some of the video/audio menu settings could be performed while a DVD was running instead of stopped, so it would be easier to quickly compare setting results, but this is not only this player but also my other Sony players as well. (Since all my players have been Sony I don't know if all players are this way or just Sony.)
The display could be a bit larger.
Wow!.......2007-06-30
I can't believe people are writing negative reviews on this player at all. I have seen some of them, and quite frankly some of them are just plain absurd. What do you want out of a sub $60 player?
It has played every dvd i have burned flawlessly. No pixelization as you might get with some older or cheaper players. It also played a random Mp3 disk i put together with no problem...and even listed the tracks.
The picture and audio are fantastic as well. Sure it doesn't have a ton of "bells and whistles" to it, but i was just looking for a basic player that would just play my dvd's flawlessly and this player does a great job of it. If you want a dvd player without the high price tag that will deliver great picture and sound, this is the one for you!
Sony Fan.......2007-06-21
Sony has put out some great products. This one is no different. This dvd player played dvds that skipped in other players in the house. It's great for playing cds on and it's sleek design is a definite plus.
Sony DVD Problem.......2007-06-17
Unfortunately, it does not work. I really wounldn
t have given it 1 star, however I had no other option.
It says it cannot read the disc. Tell me what to do?
Thanks,
