Amazon.com Product Description

Replace your VCR and step into the 21st century with the easy-to-use Pioneer DVR-633S DVD recorder--which also includes a 160 GB hard drive for storing programming (both TV shows and your home movies). It's the perfect way to create your own movies on DVD, or to record your favorite TV programs. It records up to 10 hours of video, enough for your vacation movies or an all-day marathon of your favorite TV show. Record your favorite video content onto DVD-R/RW discs.

The built-in 160GB hard drive lets you record tons of home movies and TV shows for temporary storage--up to 340 hours of content (at lowest video quality). Once theyÕre recorded you can watch them whenever you want, edit them, delete them, or burn them to DVD. When your recorded content to DVD from the hard drive, an hour-long program recorded in SEP mode (lowest video quality) can take less than 30 seconds to burn--approximately 120x (max) speed. The Smart VBR (Variable Bit Recording) recording mode lets you choose the quality level/recording time that best suits you. Choose fromÊFine, SP, LP, EP, and Auto; Auto automatically sets the optimal recording quality for the time remaining on the hard drive.

With Disc Backup, a Pioneer exclusive, you can make a direct file transfer of your home-movie DVD back to the Hard Disk Drive, and from that make as many copies of your home movie as you want, all at blazing speed. The i-LINK (a.k.a. "DV" and "IEEE 1394") interface allows you to transfer your DV (Digital Video) home movies smoothly to the Hard Disk Drive.ÊJust connect the DV input on the unitÕs front panel to your camcorderÕs DV input, and begin. And if your movies were shot in analog format, inputs forÊcomposite video/S-video and Left-Right audio are provided for dubbing them to DVD.

Program the DVR-633S to record a program up to eight days in advance using the built-in TV Guide On Screen interactive programming guide. Or manually set up programming with the VCR Plus function, a simplified programming feature to record programs where each program has a corresponding code (PlusCode) number (typically found in newspaper and magazine TV guides). The Chase Play function lets you watch, stop, or pause a show--while youÕre recording it.

You can connect the component video output of this DVD recorder to a progressive scan television for stable and flicker-free images. With the 3D Y/C Filter you get minimized noise and cross color in your picture, providing you with a top quality picture, and the all-important quality you require from a large screen television set. Also, Purecinema 2:3 playback provides smoother, clearer picture from discs encoded at 24 frames per second. Other features include a 10-bit /54MHz Video DAC, 24-bit /192kHz Audio DAC, block noise reduction, and mosquito noise reduction.

The DVR-633S provides a digital coaxial audio output for connecting to surround sound home theater receivers, as well as Dolby Digital and DTS decoding. It offers the following connection options:

3 out of 5 stars Nice but problems.......2006-11-02

I used this for 10 months before the hard drive failed. It's back at Pioneer for warranty repair, I hope they repair it... Overall the unit is nice.

When the TV Guide works it is a really nice feature. I had to reset the guide at least 5 times during the 10 months. During initial setup, before setting up TV Guide, I would turn off any channels on the tuner I did not plan on recording ever. Then during the TV Guide setup I turned off those same channels, plus ones I did not record from very often. This seemed to make it more reliable.

Entering new or modified titles for things I wanted to transfer from the HDD to DVD was tedious until I found out instead of using the arrows and selecting letters individually, that I could use the numbers on the keypad like a phone. Like to enter "cat" would be: 2 2 2 ENTER (to select c) 2 8.

Another, but small, frustration was when finializing DVD's there is no option to have it go to the main menu when first inserting the DVD into a player. It would automatically start playing the first title and automatically continue playing the next title. The option to have it go to the Main Menu on initial startup and/or return to the Main Menu after each title would have been nice.

The only other thing I can think of right now is forget about getting any kind of useful response from emailing Pioneer. The responses were worthless. Usually it would start with a reply that did not answer my question but something similar. Like they had a list of canned answers to certain questions and since they didn't have that particular question, they'd use something similar. Then it would follow with another unhelpful response when I tried to clarify my question. For every question I initiated through email, they ended with a final response to call their phone support number. It was really pathetic.

When our VCR failed in the bedroom last month I replaced it with a Pioneer DVR-640H-S. This has some improvements but also a few problems of it's own. Pioneer's email support was just as bad when I had simple questions, like how much weight can I stack on top of the 640. Again, after a series of emails I was directed to call. I spent almost 40 minutes on the phone to get an answer of they do not recommend stacking anything on top of the unit due to the hard drive. I waited 40 minutes for a 10 second answer. Why they couldn't answer this through email is beyond me.

5 out of 5 stars problems but I love it........2006-09-22

I own a pioneer DVR-633H-s and whenever I play a dvd, in the begining before the movie starts the player hangs and you can't work any buttons the player is locked up. The only way to restart it is to unplug the device while it is running and plug it back in. Then still you can't fast forward thru the advertisements.

btw I do have trouble with the tvguide thing but I do have a reset number that will work that fine. This will fix it. go to TVGUIDE, SETUP, CHANGESYSTEM.. then type 653274147 this will erase all the settings and allow the tvguide to load again.

4 out of 5 stars Does what it need to...........2006-09-02

I have owned this DVR for over a year now, and it has done exactly what I needed: transferring old VHS to DVD and fairly simple TV recordings. Yes, I have encountered the same TV Guide issues as many other owners, but have found that ignoring it works fine. Just hold down the timer button for a few seconds and you get a screen where you can setup a recording manually (it takes 30 seconds). Now, if you are a TV fanatic, I can see where you may not be able to tolerate the annoying TVG, but if you are looking for a machine to transfer old VHS and do basic recording, it is just fine. I have to say that I am glad they are removing the TVG and would never want it again!

***UPDATE***

My TVGUIDE has RETURNED!!! Mysteriously...or is it?

I'm beginning to believe its absence has something to do with Cox Cable. They have been screwing around with the channel line up for the last few weeks, and then as soon as they settled it and stopped adding those critical new channels to their digital line-up (10 new shopping channels, non-mainstream religious channels, and 10 spanish-only language versions of existing stations, makes me wonder what the heck happened to SAP?) my TV GUIDE came back. Those of you whose Guide has stopped working, you might call your Cable Provider and see what they are up to. I'm very suspicious that they were blocking it while they were shuffling things around. Boneheads.

Anyway, I still love the thing, although I have uncovered something new to watch out for. The box is VERY picky about what sort of DVD-R's it will record to, especially high speed record. I bought a batch of Maxell 8X DVD-R 4.7GB discs a few months ago and they worked great. Went back and bought what I thought were the same discs (turned out to be 16x's) and the box won't finalize them. Have had the same experience with other brands of disc too. Best luck so far are the Imation 8X's and the Verbatim 8X's, haven't had a single dud with either of those. God help me, I still think the box is the best thing since sliced bread!...mrb 9/6/2006
***********************************************************
I bought my 633H-s specifically for two reasons: 1) To turn an aging library of personal VHS and VHS-C camcorder tapes into a more durable media and 2)To automatically record movies, weekly sitcoms/drama, and sports without me having to think about it too much, in good quality, and giving me the option of burning whatever I wanted to DVD.

It has performed #1 Perfectly. Essentially, I just need to find the best VCR I can, hook it up, and dump all the tapes to the hard drive (which I have done) and then mix and match them to DVD at my leisure. That worked flawlessly.

#2 is where the 95% came in. Everybody seems to complain about the TV Guide being erratic, mine worked perfectly for about three months, but for the last couple of weeks, it has completely lost its mind. It's a real shame, because the thing is darned intelligent. I told it once to record an NBA playoff game, and then to find the others, and it recorded every NBA playoff game on every channel for the next two weeks without fail! It also is smart enough to look for programs regardless of time. I told it get me the SNL's, and it basically found them all. That's pretty cool.

But, about two weeks ago, all my channel listings went blank! Here's the funny part....even though it can't find any programming, it still KNOWS programming. I typed into the search field "Medium" and it found the show! And I set it to record it, and it grabs every single one of them! I can't get the listings to show that it knows what "Medium" is, but apparently it still does. Weird!

If you have HBO/CINEMAX/ENCORE/ etc movie channels, you cannot beat this box for over the cable record quality, even picks up a good semblance of my HD channels. And the coolest thing, any movie you grab on the hard drive that is about 2 hours 10 minutes or less, this thing will burn to DVD in 10-15 MINUTES!

That to me, is the coolest feature yet.

So, I'm still at 95%, puzzled and wondering if my Listings will ever return. If not, I may go for the "peace" of disabling the thing completely. But not yet, not as long as it remembers "Medium!".

thx....Mike Bertaut

1 out of 5 stars Hassles galore!.......2006-07-13

We bought this last December (2005). It worked well enough for the first few months (some resetting of the TV Guide and blanking for days at a time, but OK). Was great to backup our Digital 8 video tapes to DVD.

THEN...two weeks ago the TV Guide went dark (could not use it at all). I left it alone thinking it would reset and be fine.

Machine then went into an endless loop the other day when I tried to turn it on. Would not come on. Gave a "LOADING" message when powered on - then went off to EPG function - then fired up again to "LOADING" then to EPG - etc. It seems to be frying.

Read elsewhere on the web that the TV Guide function has been a disaster for almost all users. New version does not include it!

Pioneer asked us to ship it to them and they will repair it under the 1 year warranty. Frankly, I feel it is a lemon and should be replaced with the new version under a lemon law for bad electronics!

Buyer beware!
