Philips DVD750VR Progressive-Scan DVD-VCR Combo

Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description
Watch movies from VHS tape or from premium-quality progressive-scan DVD, view digital-image slide shows, listen to audio CDs with crystal-clear sound, or play homemade MP3 CDs through living-room speakers--all from one affordable, space-saving device. The Philips DVD750VR also lets you record off-air in hi-fi stereo sound and watch a camcorder or hook up a gaming console through its convenient front-panel audio/video inputs. Picture-CD functionality includes one-by-one playback and image zoom.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVD750VR stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The DVD750VR also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. S-video and shared DVD/VCR composite-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. If you don't have a surround receiver or six-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: 3D sound simulates surround sound through two speakers (even the stereo speakers on a TV).

The VCR's four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. SQPB (quasi-S-VHS playback) lets you watch S-VHS tapes--which normally requires a special S-VHS VCR--at standard VHS resolution. Other features include timer recording, auto head cleaning, auto repeat playback (great for trade shows and presentations), high-speed search, and one-touch recording.

What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo, remote control (with batteries), user's manual, stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, RF coaxial video cable, warranty information.

3 out of 5 stars So-So.......2007-01-04

I've had mine for 3 or 4 years with not one single mechanical problem even though both the DVD and VCR get A LOT of regular (daily) use. My trouble is that I've lost my manual, recently set up a cable box and can't figure out how to coordinate the machine with the cable box!! And I usually NEVER have trouble programming these things. It's making me feel a little moronic and I'm considering buying a new machine solely for a sense of vindication.

1 out of 5 stars JUST SAY NO!!!!!!.......2006-09-25

I am very frustrated with this product AND the support (or lack of) from Philips. This product began malfunctioning shortly after the 1-year warranty ended. I first began having problems with the DVD player. The DVD would either be read slowly or not at all. Eventually, I could not play anything in the DVD player. Now the VCR is no longer working. The video tape is stuck inside and I have the message "Err 2" blinking on the display. When I reported these problems to Philips, I received the following message:

"Dear Philips Customer,
Thank you for your email to Philips Customer Care.
We understand that you need to bring your DVD player to one of our
Service Centers for repair. However, your unit is not maintained by any of our Authorized Service Centers. We advise you to call your local
repair centers to help you determine the problem of your unit.
"
I can not find a local repair center that will even look at this product. So now, I'm back in the market of a DVD player and VCR player.

I am very sorry that I wasted my time and money on this product. Thanks for nothing Philips.

1 out of 5 stars The worst of the worst! The Gigli of DVD players!.......2006-02-19

For a $135 I got a DVD player that only lasted one year before it stopped working. You'd think Philips outsourced production of this DVD player to IKEA and customer support to the DMV. Do not waste your money on this piece of junk. Oh, and good luck trying to find a Philips product support site for this piece of crap. If Philips won't stand by its products, why should you? Philips should really take the walk of shame on this one. No soup for you!

1 out of 5 stars DVD player broke after a year!.......2006-02-09

It was very disappointing to have an expensive (at the time of purchase over $200) piece of equipment break shortly after a year. and just after the warranty also ran out. The DVD player started skipping, then there was a clicking sound, and then finally a disc error, saying it can't read it, when the disc is perfectly fine and works in other players. The laser must be extremely poor in this machine. I will not buy another Phillips product.
After this one broke, I bought a $50 cheapo DVD player and it's been working longer than the Phillips!!!

3 out of 5 stars Worked for a year, then DVD player dies.......2005-06-02

I gave this unit 3 stars based on the ease of use and how much I've liked the interface over the last year. Unfortunately, after the 1 year mark the DVD player is dying and constantly freezes up making it necessary to eject the DVD and then re-start the movie. The VCR is still working great.

I'm in the market for a new DVD, and have been happy with Philips so far. I think this time we won't get another combo unit, though.

1 out of 5 stars Stay far away........2006-05-31

I've owned this model for a little over a year. First the VCR section started eating tapes--but only intermittently, which actually made the problem more frustrating. Cleaning the heads, etc., made no difference. Just a couple of months later, the DVD slot refuses to open, even though the display thinks it's open.

So, this machine is now completely useless. Stay away. I won't be buying any more Philips products, no matter how tempting the price.

1 out of 5 stars Junk.......2005-08-23

I wish all these reviews were made prior to my purchase.

When it arrived, it looked as if it had been in a war zone, but I kept it as it appeared to work. But after a few plays, I got similar problems to others here. Fortunately, Amazon's shipping back at their expense without hassle.

Shame on Philips for trying to pass off such junk.

1 out of 5 stars Such Crap.......2005-08-21

4 out of 5 stars DVD & VCR combo review........2005-08-18

It was purchasd as a gift for my grandkids and I do not know much about it. Their parents said it works nice and plays all their DVDs and tapes. They are happy so I am happy.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy remanufactured products.......2005-07-26

The DVD tray was not opened after pressing the open/close button. It was not tested properly as the basic function was not working.I am waiting for Amazon's reply to exchange this product. If i face the same type of problem in 2nd time then i will go for money back.
I have received the 2nd item but the same prolem, the DVD didn't work. I will return both the items.
