The Akai DVDS3500 multiformat progressive-scan DVD player will become a valuable player in your home entertainment center. In addition to DVD movie and CD audio discs, the DVDS3500 is compatible with VCDs, CD-R/RW discs burned with either CD audio or MP3 digital audio files, and HDCDs. It supports discs with up to 8 sound tracks and up to 32 subtitles, and it offers 10-bit video decoding and dual-channel Dolby downmixing. Progressive scan: Also called sequential scanning, a progressive-scan system displays the entire image--providing all the horizontal lines per frame, rather than every other line--once every 60th of a second. This method reduces flicker and increases stability. Progressive-scan viewing requires a compatible digital TV.

Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the shape of the video image. Standard television has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in appearance. Digital television will have either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, which is widescreen and appears rectangular, looking more like a movie screen and filling more of the viewer's field of vision for a more lifelike viewing experience.

Component video: Unlike a single video input, component video maintains the video signal as three separate signals through three jacks. This connection provides optimum quality. To ensure maximum picture quality, use three video-grade cables for the Y, Pb, and Pr connections.

VCD: Video CD (VCD) is a video standard that can store audio and video to a compact disc (rather than a DVD disc) using MPEG-1 compression. You can fit up to 74 minutes of video with audio onto a VCD-formatted CD, but you can expect the video quality to be similar to that of a VHS videotape.

This DVD player tends to suck.......2006-04-21

I've had this DVD player for a year and a half. Until an hour ago no problems. Nothing to complain about. I was watching a movie and paused it to go get a drink. When i came back from the kitchen and hit play it won't start again. Re-powered the machine and it won't read any disks anymore. I've kept it in pristine condition & did nothing that would cause such a problem.

My advice to you is to buy something better unless you want to come back to Amazon after aproximately a year looking for a new DVD player.

Started having problems after a year. DVD wouldn't play. When I attempt to play, it keeps flipping between 'Loading' and 'Open' for a while and finally it'd eject the DVD.

Mine didn't even last a year. The warranty is useless. Akai's customer service is non-existent. After only 9 months it wouldn't play my dvds; it wouldn't turn on; it wouldn't eject the media that was contained inside. I had to take the blasted thing apart just to get my dvd out. It's a waste of money.

Fine DVD player for the price.......2005-06-26

This DVD player has an easier to use remote control than my other DVD players (GoVideo & Sony PS/2). The only quirk is that the Open/Close button on the player is ignored for a few seconds after the Power On button is pressed. I've had it for 9 months and watched a lot of DVDs with no problems.

you don't even get what you pay for.......2005-05-14

I only watch movies once in blue moon, and so didn't want to invest in a fancy dvd player. I've had the product for half a year, and only watched a dozen or so movies in that time. And it is no longer working. Not to mention that I had to exchange the first one they sent me (wasn't working at all). The second one only lasted 6 months, and didn't work right either. I agree with another reviewer that brightness keeps going from very bright to very dark every 10 seconds or so, with most dvds.
