Lite-On LVW5005X DVD Recorder
Product Description
Product Description:
Liteon DVD Dual Recorder Lite-On's LVW-5005 AllWrite DVD recorder revolutionizes the way you record your videos. It accepts all types of 5-inch recordable optical media: DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, or CD-R/-RW. It's also equipped with analog and digital video inputs and MCTF (motion-compensated temporal filtering) video noise reduction to improve the quality of your programs as you record them. Playback features abound, including MP3 CD and JPEG digital image CD and progressive-scan video outputs to deliver seamless, razor-sharp images on high-definition and HD-ready TVs and monitors. The player is capable of writing most video formats, too, depending on the type of blank media you're using: from highly compatible DVD+VR-mode video discs (DVD-Video) to video CD and SVCD (super video CD). A single blank recordable DVD offers up to 6 hours of recording time (in SLP mode), which is equivalent to the maximum duration of a T-120 VHS videocassette in SLP mode. Unlike your SLP tape, however, your recordable DVDs won't degrade with every viewing, and access to points within the programs is incomparably easier. Moreover, the physical size of a single VHS cassette is about 10 times larger than a DVD disc. For all DVD recording, each new recording is always placed after previous recordings unless you intent to overwrite it (when using rewritable media). The DVD recorder can automatically divide a recording into chapters by inserting chapter marks at 2- to 15-minute intervals dur

Amazon.com Product Description
Lite-On's LVW-5005 AllWrite DVD recorder revolutionizes the way you record your videos.
The DVD recorder can automatically divide a recording into chapters by inserting chapter marks at 2- to 15-minute intervals during recording. Editing features include title edit, title naming, title protect, title overwrite, and title erase.
One-touch recording makes it easy to record favorite programs or capture video from external sources, including composite-video, S-video, and IEEE 1394 digital video. The unit's easy-track navigator provides a directory of thumbnail images so you can quickly and easily locate chapters on your DVDs. Unique thumbnails represent segments that you can play or edit.
Before sharing your digital content with others, all discs must first go through a process known as finalization. Once a DVD+R, DVD-R/-RW, CD-R or CD-RW disc has been finalized, it can be played back on other CD or DVD players or on PCs.
The recorder's convenient front-panel DV Link (IEEE 1394) input lets you transfer footage from digital camcorders or PC audio/video programming in their original digital quality.
As a player, the LVW-5005 positions you to enjoy DVD-Video discs in NTSC, PAL, and SECAM formats (depending on your media and your TV/monitor), DVD+VR (compatible with DVD-Video players in most cases), video CD, super VCD, audio CD, MP3 CD (maximum number of recognizable files: 1,000; compression rate: between 32 kbps and 320 kbps), and JPEG CD (maximum number of recognizable pictures: 1,000).
The component-video input (selectable between standard 480i and progressive-scan 480p) separates the color and brightness signals to ensure the highest picture quality. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
What's in the Box
DVD player/recorder, remote control, remote batteries, user's manual, an AC power cord, a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, and an RF coaxial AV cable.
Note: Lite-On recommends use of Nero 6 Ultra Edition disc-writing software, sold separately, for creating discs to be used for the components firmware upgrades. Further, not all high-definition televisions are fully compatible with this product's progressive-scan output, which occurs at 525p rather than the usual 480p, and may produce undesirable image artifacts. In the event of 525p progressive-scan picture problems, Lite-On recommends switching the component-video output to "standard definition" (480i).

LITEON STOPPED SUPORTING THIS PRODUCT.......2007-06-25
Just learned, in the hard way, that Liteon stopped supporting this model. I sent my unit out for repair, for the second time in six months, and was informed that Liteon will replace my unit with a newer model. Unfortunately the "newer model" does not support PAL or multi region formats. Liteon refuses to even try to repair my unit. Very rude customer service.
Stay away from this manufacturer.
TAKE CARE WHO YOU LISTEN TO.......2007-06-24
Most of the problems people complain about in their reviews are disc compatibility related. If folks would do a little bit of research they'd discover that newer DVD blanks are made to burn at high rates of speed to keep up with computer burners which burn increasingly faster as time passes. Standalone DVD recorders burn at 1x only - in 'real time'.
A simple DVD drive firmware update will take care of the vast majority of disc compatibility problems.
It's not fair to fault a manufacturer for not making the product able to burn easily to DVDs that hadn't even come on the market when it was first sold. They do what they can to keep up. BTW, when you put a blank CD into it the machine asks you onscreen if you want to create an audio CD, a VCD or an SVCD. A previous reviewer didn't read the manual.
works fine, no problems so far.......2007-04-08
I have had this recodred for 5 months, and so far I have had no problems with it. So far, it records DVD's fine (unless they are locked with the rights protected junk), and does fine with TV shows, though I have yet to use more advanced features in recording. I haven't had some of the incompatibility problems with blank DVD's and CD's yet, and I just got some plain cheap ones from one of those multi-chain computer stores. (There are instructions that detail what kinds work best.) If all you are looking for is something simple to record your shows or unprotected DVD's, this should get the job done--as for anything more complex, I couldn't say either way.
records dvd's and cd's well........not exactly .......2007-03-20

lvc 5005.......2007-03-09
The unit worked for no more than 6 months, LITEON customer service refused to repair the unit even though it is still under warranty. Liton would only offer a refurbed lvc 5115ghc+ in swap for the more expensive and capable 5005. After 8 NOT toll free calls, their 800 # tells you to call a 510 # where you wait on hold at lease 15 minutes.
The supervisors will not call you back after you leave a message with the first line telephone answerers if you call multi times like me and insist you are asked exactly what you want and will agree to in advance as the supervisors do not like to call a customer blind (as they put it).

Reached for the stars.. landed in the mud..........2007-05-29
Well I bought this with high hopes it would work. But as I look at it in pieces on the floor I realized it might have been a false hope. Oh.. the reason it is in pieces is that it won't open the drawer anymore. I tried to see if I could get my disk out but the drawer is a sealed unit.
The product worked for awhile but even then it sometimes made disks that would not work on other players. I tried a number of disk manufacturers on their accepted list but still it was hit and miss, mostly hit I must say, but it was frustrating.
Well I am hoping once again. I just ordered the Toshiba D-R400 1080p Up-Converting DVD Recorder... Boy I really want this one to work....
No timed recording.......2007-01-20
Unbelievable - no timed recording. You can't set this for a future TV show and walk away. It will only record a show that is on at the time you push the record button - unheard of. I have another Lite-on that won't always make a playable recording for another machine. Sometimes it's compatible and some times it's not. Lite-on makes great DVD transport mechanisms for PC's, but not this one. They need a little help in the ergonomics dept.
Very poor product.......2006-07-19
The unit I got and briefly used was a piece of junk. It basically skips every single DVD I played in there. Does the same thing when recording/playback. Other than that, good luck trying to figure out any questions. Not to mention the customer service which is non-existant. I didn't even bother with the warranty and all that. Throw it in the garbage - it's not even worth recycling it.
GOOD UNIT FOR THE PRICE/USER FRIENDLY.......2006-01-25
AFTER RETURNING A TRUTECH 1600 AND SAMSUNG R120 DVD RECORDER THIS UNIT IS A KEEPER.COULD NOT READ FUJI DVD-R SO I WENT WITH THE TDK DVD-R WHICH IS ON THE LIST OF COMPATIBLE MEDIA IN THE MANUAL AND WORKS FINE.EVERTHING WORKS FINE.THIS IS THE MOST USER FRIENDLY DEVICE I HAVE EVER USED.THE ONLY CON IS THE TUNER IS NOT STEREO AND THE PICTURE QUAILITY FROM THE TUNER IS NOT AS GOOD AS YOUR TV TUNER...IF YOU WANT A PICTURE PERFECT STEREO RECORDING FROM YOUR TV/CABLE STATIONS THIS RECORDER WONT DO IT.MAKING COPIES FROM VHS TO DVD MEDIA QUILITY IS GREAT.RECORDING WITH DVD-R MEDIA AND FINALIZED PLAYED BACK ON ALL 4 DVD PLAYERS I TRIED.ALSO THERE IS A 10/05 SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD FROM THERE WEB SITE THAT YOU WILL NEED IF YOUR UNIT HAS BEEN MANUFACTURED BEFORE 10/05.
Noisy vertical lines moving right to left killed the mood!.......2006-01-22
It's the upgrade to the LVW 5005. Okay, it has a smaller remote control and a slightly slimmer shinier profile with relocated buttons. The downfall of the unit I purchased was that it had verical lines moving from the right to left of the screen. The LVW-5005 did not do that.
CONCLUSION:
Get the LVW-5005, or upgrade like me to the LVW-5045. You won't regret the upgrade. You are invited to read my review of the LVW-5045 on Amazon.com.

Piece of Garbage.......2007-02-02
I owned 2 Similar Products from GoVideo and they would not respond to any Commands. After a few momths the Drawers would not open. Last year I decided to buy thus product. What a mistake. It would come on all by itself every few hours and eventually also froze the drawer. I saw a low price deal and decied to buy another and contact LiteOn for Support on the first one. The 2nd one turned out to be another piece of trash, also turning on a dozen times a day. LiteOn has not responded to any emails or Phone calls for assistance.
I notized that the LiteOn and GoVideo are Identical in most respects. They have the same exact Face Plates and for all practical purposes are the same. GoVideo also never responded to any requests for assistance.
I since bought a Sony Model and so far no problems with it. My Recomendation. Avoid it like the plague.
Very unhappy with Lite-On.......2006-12-21
This is the first negative view I have written. Normally I am very positive and give companies the benefit of the doubt. However, I have very little positive to say about dealing with Lite-on. The original and replacement products were both unreliable. The pleasant voice at customer service said what I wanted to hear, but no action resulted. When they finally sent me a replacement machine it didn't work correctly either. On that replacement box I noticed a sticker that said "Non-saleable. Product defective." It went on to state how it had been returned because it wasn't working. I would NEVER buy one of their products again.
WOW! Things have changed...And for the better!.......2006-11-22
I have wanted a DVD recorder for a long while now. I bought one about 1-1/2 year ago and was VERY disappointed with it. What I wanted was a recorder that was almost as simple to operate as a VCR. I thought I would give it another try with the Lite-On LVW-5115GHC. I am glad I did!
This DVD recorder has features galore, but is VERY simple to use. So far it has worked FLAWLESSLY. I use a variety of DVD's and DVD-RW's. All have been the + (plus) DVD's (ie DVD+R, DVD+RW) and have had no problems.
All recording modes, except the 6-hour SLP mode, are VERY good. Use the 6-hour mode if you must, but the quality is low, as expected.
The only drawback I see is that there is no RF modulator in the DVD unit. Yes, there is a TV tuner and "pass-through" 75-ohm cable connection, but to see DVD's you must use the composite (RCA connectores, Red, White, Yellow) cable. This means if you don't have composite inputs on your TV, you will have to have an RF modulator. Not a big problem and is easily dismissed when looking at the big picture!
The "big picture" is an inexpensive DVD recorder that works great. Another feature I really LOVE is that this player will play DivX format video. I can just take a disk from the computer and drop it in the player and it looks great!
I am courious on how this unit lasts. I am sure thrilled with it now. I hope it lasts a while. Time will tell.
Randy
UPDATE: I originally bought this in November of 2006. It is now late March 2007 and it is still working great.
bad product.......2006-11-02
i bought this dvd recorder on 121705, and now, it will not write any dvd's i buy.... don't buy it....... it is a waste of money!!!!
Terrible! I don't know why I did not do my homework this time..........2006-07-10
I always read reviews make my own research so as to make sure I know well something before I buy it. I wanted a recorder and being a COSTCO member, I picked up the liteon lvw-5115. After all with a price tag of $120 what can go wrong, right? He-he. So, I tried to convert some of my old VCR movies. That macrovision copy protection thing that this thing has did a great job preventing me from doing so. Not being successful at that I tried to record something from the TV just to see if the recorder works. Well after 4 unsuccessful burnings I finally gave up. My first 2 burnings were on a TDK +R 1-16x and -R x4 DVDs. Liteon wrote sucessfully on both, but I was not able to play neither of them on my computer's DVD reader, nor to watch them on my samsung or audiovox DVD players. In all cases I got an incompatible media error. Even on the Liteon DVD itself, it took at least 2 minutes of searching before it started playing.
Thinking it may need a ROM upgrade, I downloaded the latest driver from the liteon website and loaded it on the LVW-5115 sucessfully. But when I tried Sony +R x8 and Maxell +R x8 DVDs, in both cases, Liteon hang up somewhere mid-way aborting the write process.
I do not have a lot of patience with things that do not work. So this one goes back. I thought Liteon was a good brand. But this one really changed my mind.
