The Aspire AD-1000 is an affordable, full-featured progressive-scan DVD player with onboard decoding for Dolby Digital sound output. Progressive scan: A television with progressive scanning can generate a picture in a single pass, in a similar way to a computer screen. High-end DVD players also support this technology. Conventional interlaced scanning requires two passes to generate a picture: the first pass for the odd-numbered scan lines, the second for the even-numbered scan lines. Progressive scan has a refresh rate of 60 times per second, double the speed of conventional analog TVs, so the picture looks sharper, more solid, and more cinematic.

Pros:
- Cheap
- Reads recordable DVDs (not Divx)
- Reads both NTSC and PAL formats

Cons:
- Remote control has narrow range and sluggish responsiveness. Buttons are inconveniently organized and confusing.
- Loading slightly dirty DVDs is painfully slow
- Occasional glitches when playing DVDs (even new ones).
- Reading high resolution JPEGs is slow and slideshow mode is unpleasantly choppy (screen goes blank while the next image is read).
- Instruction manual is barely usable
- Waking the unit from standby must be done via the remote control.

Bottom line:
Although the cheap price tag might be attractive, I would personally recommend against purchasing this product. Using this DVD player, even for the basic user who doesn't require any extra features, is frustrating and does not provide the simple "just-works" comfort you'd expect from a consumer product.
