Panasonic's silver, full-featured PV-D4744S integrates a high-quality, progressive-scan DVD player and four-head, hi-fi VCR. Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the PV-D4744S stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The VCR's four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion tape play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. The unit even lets you record a TV show while watching a DVD at the same time. By receiving the Extended Data Service signal from your local PBS channel (where available), the PV-D4744S sets its own clock and date. Furthermore, a 24-hour back-up system saves the settings and, in the event of a power outage, resets them automatically when the power is restored.

Front audio/video inputs make it easy to hook up your camcorder or gaming device. A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured AV receiver. The player simulates surround sound from DVD programs for a spacious effect from any two speakers.

Other features include auto VCR head cleaning and tape-position display, DVD repeat play, DVD high-speed smooth-motion scanning (up to 100x normal speed), DVD picture zoom, and a trilingual onscreen display (English, Spanish, French). The unit is Energy Star compliant and comes with a universal remote control.

I have had this unit for over a year, and have barely used the DVD player. After watching about two to three DVDs, it stopped reading discs. It only works as a VCR, and although it does function, even that is not so convenient. When playing back tapes, when you forward or rewind, it overshoots where you want to stop and continue playing by so much, it's very difficult to forward through commercials etc. It keeps forwarding for 30 seconds worth of tape when you try to stop it while reviewing, and if you are fast rewinding or forwarding, it will overshoot by 5 minutes. Other units do not behave this way. The main problem is that it never worked right for DVDs. Cannot recommend.

I may be just repeating what others have said, but this unit is really frustrating me; so I'm putting in my two cents. The DVD player, right out of the box, has had some difficulty reading some DVDs. Unfortunately, the problem is getting worse. And the kicker is that it is the valid, production DVDs that are having the worst problem. Homemade DVDs can usually be read. Same alternating messages as everyone else: This DVD cannot be played on this player (retail DVDs!!) or check the disc for scratches or stains (brand new DVDs!!).I haven't bought a Panasonic in years, but this will be my last for a long time. I had a Panasonic VCR that lasted 14 years of heavy usage, so I didn't even bother looking at reviews of this one before purchasing. The VCR on this unit works fine.; but my $25 DVD player works better than this one. There may be other Panasonic DVD/VCR combos out there that work just fine...but why take that chance. Stick with Sony, Toshiba, Hitachi; so far I haven't had any problems out of any of them.

Issue for months with it bringing up Spanish as the language on the DVD no matter that I never selected that. Then one day unit was just DEAD. Fuse is fine. Panasonic support useless, not worth fixing.

After having Panasonics in the past, but having my last two have issues, would not buy again.

I am now experiencing the same problem as other reviewers. The DVD will not read any disc I put into the machine, even brand new ones. This problem worsened over time to the point it will now go in the garbage. Waste of money, will not buy panasonic again. Our much older sony DVD player plays everything, and only skips/freezes if the disc is extremely dirty or has a nasty scratch. This panasonic refuses to even read the disc.....purchased the panasonic over a year ago. Infrequently used.

But, like many others have already written, you're lucky if you can get more than two years out of it.

Mine just died. No particular reason, it just quit. Kaput. No power, no lights, no nothing. This is the SECOND Panasonic VCR that has quit on me like this in the past three years. Neither lasted 24 months.

I'll never buy Panasonic again, and I've bought several over the years and been very pleased with them. I don't know what happened to them, I guess Indonesian assembly plants did them in. I hope they saved a ton of money, because they won't get another dime of mine.

An uncomplicated product that works. The sound is great, and it only took a few minutes to hook it up once I realized I had the cords mixed up. I enjoy listening to cds on the DVD player. The only thing about it is that it rewinds a bit too much, and you have to press twice to stop it. Other than that, I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Considering the price and my aversion towards refurb products, I'd have to say that my first month has been satisfactory. However, I was annoyed that none of audio / video cables nor the remote batteries were included. When I contacted Amazon, they referred me to Panasonic. Rather than wait for several weeks for Panasonic to remedy the situation, I bought the items at a local Best Buy. The unit was purchased for my classroom, therefore, its durability won't be tested. So far with infrequent use it's been satisfactory.
