Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description
RCA's shining, silvery DRC240N offers not only good looks, but an array of cutting-edge features like DivX (MPEG-4) video compatibility, progressive-scan technology for use with high-definition and HD-ready TVs, JPEG image viewing, MP3 music file playback, and compatibility with just about every recordable DVD format, from DVD-R to DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking "someday soon," the DRC240N is equipped to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Top-of-the-line component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

Like MP3, DivX is a compression technology that can shrink digital media files to sizes that can be easily moved over the Internet. Based on MPEG-4 video compression techniques, DivX maintains high visual quality while minimizing file sizes. This lets online content providers offer high-quality, low-bandwidth programs like movie trailers, animated shorts, and even full-length movies (many available as limited-time "rentals").

The DivX-certified DRC240N plays recordable media (CD or DVD) formatted with DivX 5, DivX 4, DivX 3, and DivX VOD (video-on-demand) content in compliance with DivX-certified technical requirements. To take advantage of the player's DivX compatibility, first browse Web sites and select videos to download. One content-rich portal is www.divx.com. The site will instruct you on the minimum system requirements needed to download content to your computer. Once you've downloaded your program, simply burn it to a compatible CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, insert the disc into your DRC240N DVD player, and you're ready to watch--even if you're nowhere near your PC.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. A 96 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter ensures optimum decoding of all disc formats.

If you don't have a surround receiver or six-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: Virtual Surround simulates surround sound through two speakers (even the stereo speakers on your TV). Other features include parental lock, Scene Again (one-button 10-second instant replay), bookmarking (up to 12 bookmarks per disc), and resume play (handy when you need to stop playback and pick up, at a later point, exactly where you left off).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Plays everything except PAL.......2006-05-23

This dvd player has been working good. I have not had a problem that the other reviewers here have mentioned. All my dvds play the first time, except pal format dvds. I do not have to reload them over and over. I have been very satisfied with this player and I have had it for a while now. Plays divx, xvid. I just wish it played PAL, but if I use ifoedit I can make it play the pal movies. Overall I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly Good.......2006-05-15

I have had the problem several other reviewers have had (i.e. - some DVD's not being recognized)...but for the most part it works way better than the RCA DVD Recorder that I have which constantly stops in the middle of DVD's and can never finish a movie without a skip or a problem. So in turn I take it to my bedroom and pop it in this machine and it always works. So I guess it's the lesser of two evils in my household. I'm not an RCA fan but my Dad works for RadioShack and we get alot of this stuff pretty cheap. You get what you pay for I suppose.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Product-Worse Customer Service.......2006-04-03

My unit never worked well. Had the same problems everyone else listed. Took multiple reloading of DVD's before it would recognize and start playing and numerous times it would stop playing.
After 4 weeks of frustrated use it started marking my DVDs from rubbing them against a plastic surface. I returned the unit within warranty. I got a letter back requesting payment of $49.95 within 14 days of the dated letter even though I was still under warranty. So minus 6 days for mailing on each end is effectively 8 days. I missed the date by 3 days. Now I have absolutly nothing for full purchase price plus postage getting it from Amazon and the postage to return the unit to RCA. Nothing!
They returned my check with no letter, just a rubber stamp of the date they got it for me to figure out that they didn't get it in time. 3 whole days. Thats very poor customer service.
Don't buy RCA electronics from Amazon or anywhere else through the mail if they can't support their producs with good customer service. Buy from a store that will give you an exchange and let them work it out with RCA.
I refuse to buy any other RCA product.

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this player........2006-01-09

My experience with this player is much the same as previous reviewers. The player forces you to reload a DVD multiple times before it will accept it (it locks up and won't play) and freezes up in the middle of movies. I received this unit as a gift and didn't want to take it back. That was a big mistake. Any DVD player that can't play all DVDs without flaws, is nearly worthless. I have and have had multiple DVD players in my house - one which I purchased seven years ago, one which I got free, etc. Every single one is better than this one.

Do NOT buy this player, at any price.

2 out of 5 stars Don't make this your only DVD player.......2005-12-04

I bought this player on the recommendation of Phil Love (see his review below) and our mutual friend Paul. While Phil and Paul love their players, I have been frustrated time and time again by this one. Phil's review is quite correct; this player works better with DivX and XVID than most other players. Unfortunately, it suffers from a number of problems, including difficulties with standard, factory-pressed DVDs.

The video portion of DivX and XVID files sometimes unexpectedly start playing at fast speed in the middle of a file while the audio continues at normal speed. You can usually solve this problem by pressing the fast-forward button and then quickly reverting back to normal speed. Of course, then you'll have to "rewind" back to where you where. Sometimes, attempts to rewind these files will kick you completely out of playback and you'll have to start over from the beginning and fast-foward to where you were. It doesn't take too many times for this to happen before you start getting a poor opinion of this player.

But by far the most baffling problems occur with standard DVDs. I can accept spotty performance with DivX and XVID files, but a DVD player damn well ought to play standard, factory-pressed DVDs correctly. It is not at all uncommon for this player to fail to play part or all of a DVD. As far as I can tell, this has nothing to do with scratches on the disk or any other physical problem. The last straw was when I put my brand new Star Wars Episode III disk into the player upon receiving it. Some of the special features wouldn't play and some of the chapters of the movie wouldn't either. Sometimes doing a power-cycle would fix the problem and sometimes not. Needless to say, if you rent a DVD from the video store only to find out that your player won't accept it, that puts a damper on the evening.

This player isn't completely worthless and I do appreciate that it does a better job of playing DivX and XVID files than the past players I've owned. But I would strongly suggest that you purchase this as a secondary player only.
