Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Value!.......2004-12-17

I purchased this player a couple of days ago and have been very happy with it thus far..After reading a lot of the reviews on this site I was a bit reticent about this player but decided to take a chance and I'm glad I did! So far..so good..this player has a great picture and plays DVD R + discs as well! I set it up in my car and with a "cassette adapter" (plugs into your cassette deck in the car..) you feel as if you're experiencing surround sound in a theatre! Now granted..this review is based on only two days of constant use but honestly..I can say that this little player is definitely a great value and will give you hours of sheer enjoyment! Hooking it up to my TVs at home with the audio, video cords provided and I was enjoying DVDs on my larger TVs..you didn't even need an RF adaptor. The car adapter is provided and the remote control that comes with it works great as well..for the money I don't think you can find a better deal! The unit is very light and feels like a feather when you carry it..I picked up a Case Logic case at Comp USA ($12.99) and it fits perfectly in it and I'm able to entertain my two youngsters while on a road trip..so for that alone it's worth it! You can also plug a headphone into it and with headphones..the sound is amazing! All around..no problems like I've read on this site and I'm really happy with it! Buy one!

UPDATE! 12-31-04

I was a little bit overzealous with my review of the the IDM 1810..a couple of days after I posted this above review I could not get the player to load a DVD..I thought maybe that moisture might have something to do with it so I let it sit for a couple of hours and tried again but had the same problem! So I promptly packed up the player with all the accessories and ran it back to the store where I purchased it and ended up exchanging it for the IDM 830 which is the "newer" version of this player..the dimensions are exactly the same with a few custom modifications..I read one review on this site where someone recommended getting the IDM 830 at Circuit City..well..ironically..I was over at Circuit City the other day and noticed a unit that looked exactly the same as the IDM 830 but they called it a "Liquid Video" player...I called Initial after exchanging the player and asked them about the 1810 and they said that the 830 was the "newer" version...well I've had the 830 for a couple of weeks and so far so good..I had had it on a 5 hour road trip..ran movies continuously on it for a couple of days and so far so good! It's a great player with the best picture I have seen on these portable DVD players..just like the 1810..but apparently IDM must have solved the problems they had with the 1810..so my recommendation is..get the IDM 830 and any extended warranty..just in case....it's the same player as the "Liquid Video" player at Circuit City and much more reliable..so far..I'll keep y'all posted!!

UPDATE 6-2-05

The player is still working beautifully!!!

1 out of 5 stars wow what a piece of junk .......2004-12-04

Last year around Christmas I decided that the best thing to get would be a portable DVD player. I looked around on the Internet for hours before I came to the conclusion that the Initial IDM-1810 Portable DVD Player was the one for my money. I looked at some reviews and everything seemed fine but I guess the product hadn't been out for long enough for people to start receiving problems. When I got this player I was in love with it. It had a great large screen good sound and a lot of accessories plus it worked. About 3 months into owning this device and taking excellent care of it the screen started going black when it was tilted back to a certain extent. This didn't bother me too much; I just tilted the screen so that it would work. Although last week it just stopped working for good. This concerned me a little and I talked it over with my friend who is an electronics buff and he said that it would be a minimum of $125 to get fixed. I thought about it for a wile and decided to open the player up myself to see what the problem was. Apparently this machine was made out of cheep materials (although it cost me $400). There is a hinge that connects the screen to the player itself and it is made out of PLASTIC with metal screws in it. Now I don't make electronics for a living but that just seems like a no. What the problem had been with my player was that the plastic obviously broke off (probably within the first couple weeks) and the hinge was now broken. Well right under this hinge is the wires that connect the player to the screen and every time I opened and closed the screen it would pinch the wires and now it has pinched and pinched to the point that it has actually cut some of the wires and ruined my cheap DVD player. I don't see any reason to fix it because if it happened so easily in the first place then what is stopping it from happening again. If I were looking for a portable DVD player I would steer clear of initial because of their poor quality. Please learn from my mistakes and do not buy this player.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-12-03

If I could relive the moment I hit the 'place my order' key on this one, I would!!! I got this for my kids just before Christmas last year and in less than six months, the screen started going black any time it moved. Because I contacted the company a little over a year after the item was purchased, I was out of luck. The only thing they could offer was to replace it for just under $200. Why would I spend that kind of money for the exact product that didn't work in the first place? No, Thank you. The $300+ I spent on this was basically tossed out the window. Never again. Never again.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, malfunctions, not durable........2004-12-01

I purchased this unit over a year ago. Within the first three uses it started malfunctioning. I have had numerous problems -

Black screen - I have had problems with the screen going black and staying black even after several days (ie. it's not overheated). The only solution I found that works is to fully charge the battery, then try to run the player off of it - sometimes the screen function comes back.

Broken hinge - Within six months, the right hinge had completely broken, so the unit does not shut properly and there are exposed wires. This happened after maybe 15 uses - used very infrequently, only for long car trips and vacations. I expect better durability on an item that is well taken care of.

No speaker output - I went through a span of months where the sound would only work through the headphones, not the speakers. Then it came back for a while, but it is gone again. Only works with the headphones.

Battery cable problems - The cable that attaches the battery to the player protrudes from the back of the unit, so after normal use and carrying in a carrying case, the cable has become loose. Any time it is jiggled the player loses power and then re-starts.

I would not recommend this unit at all. There are better choices, even if you have to spend a little more. Also, I would recommend a warranty. My problems started on day 43 (the manufacturers warranty - 30 days), and I was out of luck.

I recently purchased the Audiovox 1750, which is a tablet style dvd player (ie. no flip lids or moving parts) and have no complaints.

1 out of 5 stars Be advised!.......2004-05-14

I recently purchased the Initial IDM-1810 Portable DVD Player with 8" LCD and Car Kit. Be advised that Initial's "Car Kit" is only a car cigarette lighter plug. Initial's IDM -1810 Portable DVD Player with 8" LCD(no Car Kit) comes with a car cigarette lighter plug. Why is the Car Kit included in the description? I have filed a complaint with Amazon informing them that, in my opinion, the manufacture's description is false advertising and borders on fraud. I have also purchased a Mintek 1770 with Car Kit. That car kit included a portable carrying case and straps that you allow you to attach to player to the front seats of your vehicle so children in the back seats can watch a DVD. If you want a portable DVD player with carrying case and car harness kit purchase the Mintek MDP-1770Kit which includes a carrying case/car harness kit or the Mintek 1810Kit as soon as it is released.
