Amazon.com Product Description
Ready to take DVD into the world of high-definition video? Then you're ready for Toshiba's high-end SD-V592 DVD/VCR combination deck. The SD-V592 not only sports Toshiba's premium ColorStream Pro progressive-scan video outputs (480p), but it's custom-made for hookups with HDMI-compatible high-definition televisions with selectable 720p/1080i upconverted DVD outputs via a rear-panel HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface).

The DVD deck plays a variety of optical content, including DVD-Video, DVD-R, audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and video CD, as well as MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) music files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. A 4-head, hi-fi VCR gives you exciting stereo playback for your entire library of VHS tapes; it'll even play S-VHS tapes (at regular VHS quality). You can also copy non-Macrovision-protected DVDs to videotape--just the thing for sharing your computer-edited, DVD-based home movies with loved ones.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p and 720p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using two or three times the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The SD-V592 also performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal (Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive). DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown reversal digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The DVD deck's JPEG viewer makes it easy to watch custom slide shows from digital photos burned to recordable CDs. The unit's array of home-theater-ready video connections includes composite-, S-video, and ColorStream Pro component-video outputs, with the VCR and DVD components sharing the composite-video and RF video outputs--especially convenient if you'll be using this device with a TV that only has RF or composite-video inputs. The DVD player's internal digital-to-analog audio converter (DAC) works at 24-bit, 192 kHz resolution to ensure optimum sonic quality from a range of digital program material; the video DAC operates at a high, 12-bit/54 MHz resolution.

One set of left/right analog-audio outputs (DVD/VCR) channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals from DVDs can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (1 each RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. In addition, readily accessible front-panel AV inputs permit easy connection for a game console or a camcorder for simple dubbing of home movies to the VHS deck.

For enhanced picture quality during VHS playback, the 4-head hi-fi VCR uses a pair of 19-micron video heads, which deliver exceptional (near SP) picture quality of content recorded and played back in the extended play (EP) mode. Commercial skip lets you pass over commercials during playback. Other features include 1-year, 8-event programming, high-speed (200x) rewind and fast-forward, index skip, auto head cleaner, and auto clock set--no more flashing "12:00".

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any AV source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

What's in the Box

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars What was Toshiba thinking?.......2005-11-04

I bought this combo player because it was a Toshiba~I've always had quality products from them~Not this time, though~From the moment I plugged it in, the dvd player audio was muted~I had to turn it up almost all the way~this, on every dvd I played. The vcr player was fine for a week, then, slowly it started skipping towards the end of every tape, then, gradually all the way through, and then, the crowning blow, the sound went out! I could finally see why they offered an extended warranty~The player is a piece of garbage~Toshiba~you need to go back to the drawing board on this one.

3 out of 5 stars Is this really worth the money? In my opinion..no.......2005-05-18

I have a samsung DVD/VCR 4600, and bought this toshiba SD v592 to improve the quality of the picture through the HDMI in on my samsung 50" DLP TV. I was expecting the same quality of picture as from over the air HD transmission

I was quite surprised to see no difference between the composite in from my samsung DVD/VCR, and the HDMI with 480p, 720p, or 1080i with the Toshiba 592v. Not that the picture is bad, but it is not as stunning as the HD transmission I get.

I am returning this product.
