Bottom line up front: This DVD player is ideal - it is light, great battery life, evolved smart design, and looks great. It has a faux black leatherlike coating on the screen backing and the black matte finish to the player which looks cool and doesn't distract from the movie. The hinge that rotates the player from tablet-like flat to most any angle is strong and well hinged - looks like it would survive a fall. The picture is perfect without any adjustments; however, there is a button that adjusts for daylight and moonlight viewing as well as a a button to adjust brightness and color manually. The main menu allows several video adjustments (I used full digital noise reduction and full depth enhancer). Also, I enable bass boost, dialogue enhancer and sound enhancer and use Headphones Enhanced from the speaker/headphone menu. The buttons at the bottom of the player are easy to use and clearly marked for playback and the center button to the right of the dvd door allows up down and side to side menu navigation. I like a small button just above play that lets you advance the movie frame by frame with each push of the button and then hit play to resume. The picture is tight and not pixelated to my eyes. The colors are very warm, I prefer to tone them back a few notches. I noticed that this model seems to have better viewing angles. Before when watching say in the kitchen on the older DVD-LX97 I noticed that the angle had to be just right or I couldn't see the picture - not an issue anymore - great! It supports DIVX, which I plan to use extensively. I don't care about some new bells and whistles such as usb flash drive support or memory card readers - those aren't the purpose - playing DVDs right away is and this does the trick. No remote is not an issue with me, never use them for portable devices anyway. My wife really likes these Panasonic players, this is our second one, your family will too. Mine gets used every night on my bedstand to watch movies as I fall asleep so I don't have to fall asleep to Roseanne reruns on nick at night. A gadget guys best friend.

Great.......2007-06-27

It's good. Good part is we can play both PAL & NTSC DVDs and can be connected to any TV as I have taken it to India with few DVDs for in flight entertainment for my kids with 2 headphone jacks but they could also see the local movies in PAL format. It was very handy, can be connected to any TV to watch it in bigger screen if needed where we don't have other DVD player available.

The Best.......2007-06-14

My order arrived 7 days earlier than expected, that's a good sign. This DVD player is awesome, light weight, clear picture and the option I always wanted to test is playing Divx format. If you think Philips got a good name in Divx, try this one out. I played the same Dvix movie on both, this player runs so smooth that I can't even tell the laser is scanning the disc.

I haven't got to the point calling their technical support, so I can't give comment on that, but I'm sure reading one of these reviews you will encounter experiences with Philips customer reps.

Besides, don't buy the 10" Logic case for this player, it won't fit nicely.

This little DVD does the work of a big TV. And it is very compact with a screen that can be positioned. Great for travel, great for home.

GREAT picture.......2007-06-26

Finally a portable DVD with a truly spectacular picture. This is the 5th different DVD portable I have purchased and up until now I was pretty dissapointed with the grainy pictures I was seeing. This little guy has a great picture. The operation is smooth. Included is everything you need for portable viewing and inside viewing. Sony does it again. I've only owned this for 1 month but it has played every home made DVD-R I have made and every movie without a glitch! The sound is alos quite good for a portable unit. Great purchase.

Doesn't play edited dvd's.......2007-06-08

I edit my daughter's dvd's to remove the title screens so I can more easily play them for her in the car (she is three). This unit refuses to play the edited dvds. Otherwise the player seemed fine. I returned it and got the Coby 8 inch swivel screen player instead.

Very Good Purchase.......2007-06-08

The player itself is quality. I really enjoy the pivoting screen angles and the quality of the screen image. The only downfall for this product is the loudness of the speakers. If you are wearing headphones the sound volume is perfect, but without headphones the loudness of the speakers is very poor.

Mine died a quick painless death.......2007-06-05

I bought this unit for long trips for the kids and was impressed with the way the rotating screen would allow it to be placed in various positions in the car for viewing. Unfortionatly, the glossy screen of the Sony made it virtually impossible to watch in a vehicle, even with tinted windows. Even putting towels in the windows helped little. The kicker was the fact that the unit died during the first movie played. Screen just failed. I was worried about the base units connection to the screen with the rotating feature, and it appears my worries were justified. Returned it and bought the Toshiba 1900 instead. I am much happier with the slightly larger screen and the lack of glossy luster on the screen. Also, it's still working after watching several movies.

Works Fine !!!!.......2007-06-02

This DVD player feels a little heavy, but considering it's long playback time before recharging, the battery HAS to be a little large and heavy.

The audio sounds tinny, due to the small speakers, but is OK using headphones. I would only use headphones in any case, to help me focus on the movie and block outside noises.

All in all, the player works well and for a portable player, I like it.

Great DVD player for gym or travel.......2007-06-04

I purchased the Sony DVP-FX810 DVD player for use while exercising. The one standout feature of this model is that the screen flips up, pivots around, and folds back flat, making it look a bit like a tabletPC. This is great for my purpose, since I need to put the laptop on exercise machines much like others are putting magazines.

The player feels quality built - definitely not a cheapo wal-mart special. If I was handed it and asked to guess the price, I'd say $300+. It comes with a full-size remote (not particularly practical for me), but everything is also accessible from the unit itself. There's a very practical rubber nub built in (sort of like that on IBM laptops) that lets you move around menus without using a remote. It also comes with a car and home charger.

My only negative on this player is that it is rather thick. The battery fits to the bottom of unit - measuring the full size (l x w) of the player. That makes the unit feel a bit thick. That said, it still fits on the exercise machines without difficulty. Despite other reviewers, I have not complaints about the quality of video. It looks fine to me - though I am not an expert. Overall, I would say that I'm very pleased with the purchase.

Great For What It Is.......2007-06-23

I got this a few hours ago and am extremely happy with the purchase. But I understood what I was getting:

- Sub $200 Portable DVD player - My Magnavox went out on me after about two years and this was the replacement. The picture quality is a bit better than the old Magnavox and it has much better features. I wasn't expecting HDTV quality with this, and it doesn't have that, but for a low-end portable player, this is great.

- iPod Player - I plugged in my 80G iPod and had NO problems whatsoever. Again, it is not HDTV picture quality, but it is a lot better than the little iPod screen for watching in bed or on a plane. My first try was Star Wars III and I was thrilled with the opening battle sequence.

This product will serve several purposes great: car entertainment for the kid for long drives, and airplane entertainment for the kid or me for long plane trips. In either case I can either use DVDs or the iPod, which is a nice choice since I now have the option to not haul DVDs on trips.

For less than $180 (and no tax or shipping for Amazon Prime) this was a great deal.

I have the 7" model.......2007-06-20

I thought that this item looked like it would be pretty awesome, since it plays so many different formats. One problem, if you listen to the player through with the headphones, you can actually hear the motor spinning the disc. The only way to not hear it is to blast the volume till you can't hear anything anymore. I exchanged it, and found the same problem on the second one. Philips wasn't much of a help either.

Travel Player you can't actually travel with!.......2007-06-20

Don't get me wrong, I like this player for a lot of reasons, but does it strike anyone else as odd that a portable player designed for travel and containing an international voltage adapter will not allow you to play legal DVDs purchased outside region 1 (North America). I bought it for international travel, so for me, it's close to useless unless I want to carry all my DVDs with me -- $200 down the drain.

One other niggling problem... You can't control the volume with the remote control

If you ever plan to travel with this player, don't buy it.

I have been very interested in a portable DVD player for a long time. Especially one that dock a video iPod. Great.
After reading all the positive reviews on the Phillips DCP750 & DCP850 I wanted one but held back and went to Best Buy to see it person.
I liked everything about this one, lacking some features as stated in the reviews but you could live without the minor ones.
The killer for me was the Screen brightness. I tested 7 to 10 movies trailers on each Portable DVD player and the Phillips was the darkest and hardest to see. The Panasonic LS91 had the best looking and the most adjustment for brightness but it isn't a iPod docking one and the reviews say it has it's problems.

If the Phillips DCP850 had a better brightness to where you could view a movie in more detail (in other words normal) I would have walked out with one.

I suggest you check this one out in the store for your viewing pleasure and if you like it but it. I wasn't happy with the sceen brightness. You want to see what is happening in a movie don't you?

OK.. it is a DVD player... it is also a iPod big 8.5 screen player... it even displays SD images! It rotates, flips over, and it has a remote! Well, it is more than OK... It's GREAT!

Good bang for the buck.......2007-06-16

I paid 40 dollars too much at best buy,,, aside from that, it seems to be a nice little unit. The screen resolution is pretty good, excellent with cartoons and animated videos for the kids. (the only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars) The battery is a small lightweight thing and is amazing at how long it lasts. (which bumps it back up to 5 stars) The car head rest mount is really nice also. I've even plugged this into the sound system on my Harley Davidson Electra Glide (plug it in just like an iPod), and played a Pink Floyd Concert at our campsite over the weekend!! Hopefully the "HO3" Error that a few people were talking about won't surface. This should keep the youngins occupied during our long plane trip to Europe this summer.

Great sharp system. Long battery duration important for long flights - but sound/volume is limited, so get sharp clear headphones.

I truly would NOT waste your money on this DVD. I wanted the long life battery, and that's the only good thing about this player. Picture and sound are NOT good at all. I have a much cheaper Panasonic portable DVD player that has features way superior to this thing. Too bad the battery life is not as long. I am returning it soon. My advise DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PLAYER.

Haven't had it long, but great so far.......2007-06-08

I finally decided to get a portable DVD player as I had some long car rides coming up and a 6 and 11 year old. My first forays into research were discouraging as every model seemed to have its admirers and detesters. This version didn't have much written about it, but Panasonic seemed to have a decent reputation. I was actually going to by the LG model I saw, but it was so new, I had no info, and while at the store, the clerk couldn't figure out how to work it. Then I was going to get the Sony, but the screen glare with the screen protector on it didn't appeal to me. So, I grabbed this one and it has worked like a charm. It feels sturdy, has a great picture, and the sound is quite nice. I don't understand the person who couldn't hear it with the headphones on. Maybe he had bad headphones, and there is also a menu on the player that allows you to choose headphone sound, although my headphones worked when it was on regular sound. Plus the first night, something spilled over the closed player and sat there till morning, I was a bit upset, but the thing worked fine, no glitches. As for having no remote, thank goodness for that, one less thing to lose in the car. My 6 year old could operate it just fine by pushing the buttons on the player top.
Also, Costco sells this same one in a package, the Panasonic LS-850 (which I couldn't find anything on), but it only has a 6 hour battery life. The LS 80 is also the same player, just a shorter battery life. I know this because the manual for this player includes all three models, but lists their battery times differently. In all the Costco version comes with more and is cheaper, but you lose out on the battery life.

Great choice.......2007-05-14

We have this portable DVD player and we love it. It has great battery life, image is excellent, it has an OK to good volume level and it comes with a special attachment so you can strap it to the back of a seat in a car.

wicked awsome dvd player!!.......2007-05-19

i got this dvd player last november, and it has performed exquisitly ever since. the picture is really good. i like how thiers 2 headphone pluggins, so i can watch it with my best friend using the headphones. the sound is definately better on the headphones, but good either way. i love the portability! the battery runs for over six hours, and thir are attachments so i can watch it and charge it in the car. this is great. tottaly worth the money! definity buy it!!!

Toshiba Portable DVD .......2007-05-07

I purchased a portable dvd player for my child so we could have a nice distraction for traveling. The Divx capability and sale price were the selling points.
I've used other portable DVD players and on every one the built in speakers are never loud enough. And since the screen is so small I don't get too wrapped around quality. The Toshiba has a great battery life, it runs quiet and it comes with a 12v car adapter. People actually complain that it does not come with headphones, seriously? People, please invest in some nice headphones youll be much happier. If the Toshiba was not on sale I would have gotten the audiovox, or a cheaper player that was divx certified. The audiovox is a great player and is very durable. Gotta love the Divx 4 +hour dvds though.

Don't leave for a family road trip without it..........2007-03-26

This DVD Player was worth every penny... just got back from a lengthy road trip with our 2 year old son and the DVD player kept him occupied and happy for the duration. The player was easy to use and operate, especially with the handy remote. We plugged the player into our cigarette lighter unit in our car, but it also has a rechargable battery unit with a decent life expectancy. The screen resolution was decent for such a small screen and although the sound quality wasn't great, it was loud enough for my son to watch and listen without headphones. We also enjoyed viewing photo slideshows by inserting our camera memory card into the player. All in all we're very happy with this product.

A Very Good Player Plus It Plays PAL Discs Too!.......2007-03-18

I find the Toshiba SD-P1850 to be a very good player. Granted I don't have any other portables to compare it to but I did a lot of comparisons and research before buying this.

Things I liked about the player:
1) Nice long battery life. About 4 hours under normal use is what I got and I know if I had a battery that only lasted 2-2 1/2 hours it would have driven me crazy.

2) A really good display. Video comes out looking sharp and the colors are very good. Of course you can change the video output to your liking through various adjustments.

3) Will play various formats. From MP3, WMA, JPG, Divx/Xvid to just plain CDs it'll play most of the formats out there.

4) One nice capability of the player is that for playing Divx/Xvid videos it can read them off of DVD-R, DVD+R, CD-R and to my surprise DVD-RW(unfinalized). I haven't used the memory slot yet but I'm sure it works fine there too. One thing to pay attention to is that the files have to be saved in the ISO 9660/UDF format. I was saving using Roxio's Drag-To-Disc program that came with my laptop and the player would not recognize the files on the disc. I first thought the Divx playing capability of the player was broken plus I burned 2 DVDs and a CD-R in the process before I figured out what the problem was. I finally used another program called Imgburn and that solved the problem.

Some of the quirks I find annoying with the player are as follows:
1) On fast-forward for 8X and 16X, as the video skips along the picture displayed is not the actual point where the video starts playing when you press Play but about a 30 seconds later. 2X and 4X actually are okay as the picture displayed will be where the video starts playing when you press Play.

2) Doesn't have a true Resume feature. If you press Stop once but don't turn off the player it will play where you stopped. If you press Stop twice it loses your place and will start from the beginning. Also it will lose your place when you turn it off. This may not seem a big deal but when you combine it with quirk #1 above, it gets kind of old when the chapter stops aren't exactly where you stopped in the first place.

Update: A workaround for doing a Resume feature is using the Bookmarks feature. It will even work when you press the Stop button twice.

3) As someone else stated on Divx/Xvid videos, the video is stretched to fill the 16:9 screen instead of being at 4:3 format for those videos that require a 4:3 format. This cannot be changed like you can with DVDs.

4) Speakers sound very 'tinny' compared to when you use a really nice set of headphones. The difference is night and day but then again this is a portable. I'm probably one of the few that is glad they didn't include any headsets as I would've thrown them away. Invest in a good headset i.e. Grado, Shure and Sennheiser to name a few, as they will make enjoying the movie/music that much better. It will cost more upfront but in the long run you will not have to buy a new headphone in a couple of years. There is an EQ Mode with the player and with a nice set of headphones you won't need this feature. The only reason they have this mode I think is to compensate for bad headphones. Life is too short to listen to crappy sound so get a nice pair of headphones. Your ears will thank you for it.

A surprise with this player is that while the manual states that it plays NTSC only, I put a PAL disc in and it actually played! This was a region free DVD and the disc would not play on my 2 other DVD players and a DVD recorder. To make sure this wasn't an anomaly, I've taken the PAL disc out numerous times and it has played it every time and all normal DVD functions are available. Also you can take the A/V cable that comes with the player, connect it to your TV and watch it there if you want.

Other 'undocumented' features included being able to enter the time to a specific location on Divx/Xvid videos, using the on-screen display for Divx/Xvid videos, and Divx/Xvid file names can be greater than 8.3 character format as given in the manual. I have file names for example that look like this "Filename.Xvid.English.avi"

Overall I'm very satisfied with the Toshiba SD-P1850 and would recommend it.

Great DVD player!.......2007-05-09

The most wonderful thing about this DVD player is the fact the battery lasts for 6 hours. That's a rarity. The screen is crystal clear and the audio is great. I love this DVD player and would highly recommend it to anyone. The only down side and it doesn't really bother me a lot is that the drive is a bit noisy. The way to fix that is by tilting the DVD up in the front.

VERY NOISY FOR THE PRICE I PAID..........2007-05-07

This DVD player was recommended to me by my IT person, so I bought it without reviewing the "reviews" on this product and I am sorry I did...even she has taken it off her "recommend list" I returned the item and got a replacement and it was the same. It is just so noisy especially when the DVD starts up and somewhat noisy when running. Also the volume doesn't' go very high. In the car it isn't loud enough unless the player is sitting on your lap... ON a good note the screen/image is beautiful.

works for what i wanted.......2007-05-01

bought this so that my son (2yrs old) wouldnt drive me nuts on long flights. The battery is WONDERFUL, keeps going all the way to Cancun and then some. Screen is above average, what do you expect for something this small - its not hi def, but great for what we need (mostly cartoons).

Pretty Good Little Unit.......2007-04-15

Not a bad little unit. I read some reviews stating how it was sort of noisy but I kind of expected that anyway. If you're wearing headphones or have external speakers jacked in it's not an issue. All in all I'm happy with the picture and the performance.

Philips PET824 good and bad.......2007-04-10

Nice player in some ways (long battery life and good picture quality), but it doesn't handle any of my DVD's which are copies. It only seems to be able to play store-bought DVD's. Also, it doesn't seem to be able to do forward or reverse scans without the remote control. Overall, I'm not very happy with it.

all the reviews on this page are pretty accurate. there is a lot of noise that comes from the dvd playing. the picture is great but the sound leaves a lot to be desired. ok unit for the kids in the backseat to keep them entertained on long car rides.

Nice little multi-region player.......2007-04-24

I was really pleased with this unit especially since I am not a tech-geek and the only thing I knew I wanted was something user friendly to play PAL and NTSC dvds with good picture quality and good sound that wouldn't break the bank. I read reviews on multiple websites until my eyes crossed and I realized that for just about every unit made, whatever the price range, the complaints are the same. So I took my chances with this one and I am absolutely delighted. The picture is crisp and true (no stretching the actors to fit the screen), the sound is clear, and yes, there is a whirring noise but it really isn't that bad. The build quality is fine (as long as you aren't slamming the thing shut repeatedly or throwing it to the floor) and the menu is easy to navigate. I had to call COBY (1-800-681-2629) to find out why it wouldn't play PAL dvds even though I'd switched the menu setting. It turns out you have to have the cheat code. Here it is-on the remote press

at this point the screen will have a small number in the upper right part of the screen. Use the right arrow on the remote to switch the number until you get the region code you want. Then press setup to exit.

I tried it and it works so I'm a really happy camper. All in all, this is a great little player for the money. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this as a gift or recommend it to a friend.

Received very quickly; had all items needed for travel, i.e., power plug for cigarette lighter, 2 sets of headphones, wires to hook up to TV set which is good b/c you can hook it up to the TV at a hotel, of course it came w/ a battery and charger and the swivel screen turns it completely around and folds flat onto itself so you can place it into the the "satchel" that came with it and hang it from the back of a head rest. Not an extra item to purchase for this unit besides your DVDs and a carrying case. Very glad I chose this player.
