Customer Reviews:
Didn't Last As Long As I Thought It Would.......2006-07-12
I had an Audiovox MVDVD4 DVD player come installed in my 2003 Ford E-150 Conversion Van, customized by Sherrod Vans.
The DVD player was pretty reliable before it died on me. The player typically functioned flawlessly, regardless of road conditions. The player did seem susceptible to the cold. When it was cold out (approaching 0 F), the DVD player would provide a pixelly/blocky output if it worked at all. The player usually began functioning after about 15 minutes with the heat on.
The player is quite easy to hook up. The Audio and video output is the standard three wires (yellow, red, and white) used on any current home DVD system. The only thing that differs between this player and a home player is the power input.
When the van was a little over 3 years old, the DVD player suddenly quit working. I would put in a DVD, the player made some noises like it was trying to read the DVD, then the display would say "NO DISK".
As it was out of warranty and I have a background in electronics, I opened the player. After playing around for a little while, I was able to fix the player real easily. If you have the same problem (and the player is out of warranty), open up the DVD player by removing the screws and breaking the seal. I blew out the inside with compressed air, but I doubt this made a difference. The problem was that the DVD was not spinning. The spinning mechanism under the DVD tray was not starting like it should. I carefully sprayed a couple drops of WD-40 (well actually Remington's Rem Oil) where the metal rod the spinner sits on goes into the motor mechanism that spins it (it will make sense when you look inside. It is where the little metal rod goes into the plastic casing). After a couple of drops of oil, the player worked fine again.
I was pretty happy with the player while it worked. However, due to its limited use, I thought it would last more than 3 years.
