"Value packed" is a phrase that accurately describes Philips' DVD711AT DVD-video player. This simple yet high-performance model offers a slew of connection options; the ability to play back DVD-video, audio CDs, Video CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs; and very fine picture and sound quality. To top it off, the DVD711AT's remote control is uncomplicated yet highly effective.

In terms of performance, this is a honey of a DVD player. Picture quality is among the best we've seen in this price range, with a fine color balance, good black level, and fine resolution of detail. The sound quality is quite good too, though audio purists will always prefer the sound from a quality dedicated CD player.

When it comes time to plug the DVD711AT into your system, you may choose from component video, S-video, or composite video outputs, coaxial or optical digital audio outputs, and two pair of stereo analog outputs. However, the DVD711AT does not offer a headphone jack, which may be a concern if you prefer stealth-mode listening sessions.

Despite their ubiquitous nature, remote controls are very personal items. Some prefer massive wands with complex arrays of buttons and gobs of macro controls. If you're in this camp, then the DVD711AT's small, contoured, very simple remote may be a disappointment. We happen to come from the other school of remote appreciation, and very much like the DVD711AT's remote for its simplicity and ease of navigation. The onscreen display (OSD) controls are highlighted in yellow with small icons, so with the touch of one of five buttons you can change subtitles, language tracks, camera angle, zoom, or titles and chapters--nifty! Of course, in an ideal world this remote would also be illuminated, but in this price range that remains a dream, not reality.

Speaking of OSD, the one here is very easy to manage and refreshingly clean, as opposed to some of the large and difficult menus we often encounter. We're still not crazy about the bright blue and rather large display window Philips uses on its front panels, but as long as the player is to the side of your TV this won't be a major distraction.

There's little else to add. The Philips DVD711AT proved to be a clean machine with a fine balance of features and quality and deserves a strong recommendation. --Wayne Garcia

1 out of 5 stars Avoid at all cost!!!!.......2004-04-11

After minimal use, the DVD player did not work. Although able to recognize audio CDs, it failed to recognize any DVDs, ejecting them after attempting to read the data. I bought a lens cleaning disc for $10, thinking the laser had to be cleaned. Still, no DVDs played. After calling customer service, they told me there was little I could do since the product was no longer under warranty. In addition, I was told that no Philips authorized retailers would be able to repair it. So, after such minimal use, my DVD player is simply a CD player.

Now that DVD players are a little more advanced, playing MP3 CDs and DVD-R, do not fall back on the Philips DVD711 because it may be the most inexpensive. You'll end up having to buy another DVD player anyway.

5 out of 5 stars 4 years and still love it.......2004-02-07

I bought this player 4 years ago and at the time it was one of the top players. It's built quality feels so much better than the current generation players which are exclusively made of plastic unless you spend at least $500. The player has never rejected a disc, never frozen or made any kind of error even with the worst rented dvds. I've always been a great Philps fan and as long as they keep making products like this one I will always remain one.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE of Philips Products!!.......2003-06-19

My DVD711 was used a grand total of 4 times when the laser reader died. After writing of my experience to Philips, they pretty much told me they were very sorry. Sorry doesn't walk the dog. BEWARE buying any Philips product becasue they obviously don't stand behind their work. Add this to the fact that they're pricey compared to other brands and there is no reason whatsoever to choose Philips.

5 out of 5 stars The best DVD player around!!.......2002-02-18

I bought one of these beautys over a year ago,and not only did It always work great when playing both DVd's and Video Cds.But now even a whole year or two later,It still works great.I could'nt recommend this DVD player more! If you're looking for a great and inexpensive DVD player, look no further, this player is the one for you!

5 out of 5 stars No Regrets.......2002-02-01

The Philips DVD711 player has been a great investment. As an avid movie watcher, I've enjoyed the beautiful picture and sound quality that this player provides. To top it all off, it comes with a very reasonable price tag. Hook it up to your surround sound system and you will not regret this purchase.
