Product Description
From the Manufacturer
Samsung's exciting DVDN501 brings unheard-of flexibility and innovative interactivity to the DVD format. Developed by Samsung engineers with support from VM-Labs, the DVDN501 uses Nuon technology to enable advanced operation, smoother playback of video at a wide variety of speeds, and even interactive gaming on a single platform. Audio playback is enhanced as well, as the powerful multiprocessors create vivid, active displays on your TV screen when playing audio discs. And all of this capability is in addition to Samsung's reliable performance.

The DVDN501 also advances overall DVD operations. The Convergent Cockpit User interface displays operating status in full color, while still presenting the video image. The joystick remote allows all settings to be changed on the fly, giving instant feedback on disc operations. A Moving Zoom feature allows continuous and instant magnification of the video image up to 20 times, while powerful processors virtually eliminate the picture distortion normally seen with magnified digital images. There is even a multipicture strobe function, which divides fast-moving scenes into individual still frames for a more detailed view of a golf swing, close play at the plate, or all the right moves from your favorite star. The DVDN501 will bring new life to your DVD collection, enhance your audio discs, and bring hours and hours of interactive entertainment to every member of the family.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Nuon, shmuon, it doesn't play DVD-R's!.......2003-12-01

I bought this as a high-end DVD player about 2 years ago, and I regret it, in addition to the other woes that are mentioned above, it doesn't play DVD-R's or DVD+R's!

1 out of 5 stars Loads of feature, but doesn't perform basic function!.......2003-01-04

Great features, great picture quality but skips too often. I've had mine for almost a year now. It skips even to brand new, out of the box DVDs! Extremely frustrating. This product had mixed reviews and I should have known better; I regret buying this DVD player. I even have the latest update on this, yet it still skips. Yes, it has great features, but what is the point if you can't watch a darn 2 hour movie without it skipping 5-6 times. It starts to skip about 45 - 60 min into the movie, after that it's really bad and skips like every 2-3 min. And it has skipped to just about every movie we've watched. I did buy the extended warranty from Best Buy, but they say "we can't find the problem", so I'm stuck with this thing. Like they actually sat and watched a movie to see if it skips. I guess a customers word is not good enough these days! I'm rating this awful because it doesn't perform it's basic function well enough to be worth any kind of money.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely the best DVD player for the money..........2002-09-21

This is an amazing little player from Samsung, which can now be found right around the $100 mark. Aesthetically speaking, the player's brushed aluminum casing is attractive and smart, and the angled face is quite stylish, a big improvement over the DVD N2000 (though I do miss the jog/shuttle dial).

The picture is very crisp, and although it lacks progressive scan for those with high-end televisions, most consumers will be more than satisfied by it. Sound is also quite good, though the lack of an internal 5.1/DTS decoder might turn some away (not a problem if you have a DTS receiver thanks to its DTS compatible optical and coax digital audio outs). With built-in HDCD decoding and the Virtual Light Machine (which pulsates and illuminates to the many aspects of whatever music you may be listening to), this is one of the better players for the audiophile as well.

As far as the gaming aspect of NUON is concerned, it may very well have fallen flat, though a couple of the games released, Tempest 3000, an extremely addictive and compelling update of the classic arcade game & Freefall 3050 A.D., an extremely unique, if difficult shooter of sorts, are well worth playing. That aspect taken as it is, the multimedia aspects of NUON are still compelling. Aside to what it allows you to do with any DVD (the 20x ZOOM with image filtering and smooth forward/reverse are the best on any player), the NUON Software Development Kit has opened up quite an underground development core, and there are quite a few applications already available, from the shareware version of DOOM, to Pac-Man, with more on the way. It's not going to replace your Playstation 2, but it's a nice diversion from your standard DVD watching, and a great bonus to one of the best values in DVD (the released games can be had for $10 by the way, with controllers at $10-$15.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible player.......2002-08-10

I have owned about four different DVD players; this is the worst of the lot by far. It takes some major complaints on my part for me to return an item, but I definitely could not take this DVD player.

First and foremost, the DVD player skips quite frequently when playing normal DVD discs. It was quite a severe skip too, much more harsh than a layer change. Forget the fact that you can download something to fix the problem, because a consumer shouldn't have to jump through loops for a product to perform basic operations. Why spend so much money on a player that will simply turn out to be a huge inconvience?

In addition to the skips, the player wouldn't even play some of my more advanced discs. Terminator 2: Ultimate Edition DVD, for instance, would either not load at all or freeze upon loading.

Also, the player would often freeze if you use the remote buttons at a moderately fast pace. An example would be if you are manually fast-forwarding through the movie, press pause, then quickly change your mind and keep fast forwarding. This kind of thing can cause the player to freeze up.

And that is exactly what this NUON player is. Looking for the upgrades (around the months of July, 2002) turns out to be quite an epic quest. Before I returned it I tried several programs to fix the player, but to no avail. The downloads I did manage to find didn't fix the skipping problem.

Another huge problem is the loading time. DVD players two years older than this had quicker loading times. It really shouldn't be too big of a deal, but when you have to wait ten to fifteen seconds before the menu comes up, it does become quite annoying.

My advice? Find another player. I've seen these players marked down quite a bit at electronic stores around me, but there are much better players at much better prices.

5 out of 5 stars The N501 Rocks!.......2002-02-22

I have to warn you that this great DVD player does have some problems with older firmware revs, but you can download new firmware and install it from a CDR. Once updated the N501 works like a champ, and delvers great audio and video quality. The Virtual Light Machine (VLM) feature alone makes this a great DVD player for listening to music while being memorized by psychedelic visuals. The VLM feature works with both audio and MP3 discs. I think the best feature of this unit is one that is hidden, the multi-region DVD playback capability. You can learn more about this "region free" mode by heading on over to the Nuon Dome.
