A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. A 96 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter ensures optimum stereo decoding of all disc formats. If you don't have a surround receiver or six-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: 3D sound simulates surround sound through two speakers (even the stereo speakers on your TV).

The VCR's four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. SQPB (quasi-S-VHS playback) lets you watch S-VHS tapes--which normally requires a special S-VHS VCR--at standard VHS resolution. Other features include timer recording, auto head cleaning, auto repeat playback (great for trade shows and presentations), and one-touch recording.

I bought this player about 2 years ago and have found it to be a great machine. But just recently I have been experiencing problems with the VCR damaging video tape during rewinding. Also the DVD player will, on occasion, pause the video and stop spinning the disk at a random place in the movie, then pixilated the video while making sputtering attempts to spin the disk again (I can only remedy this by ejecting the disk and then find my place in the movie again.) The remote is not bad, easy to use once you take the time to think about what you're trying to do before you start mashing buttons. In the end still a great player (4 stars for the past two years, 2 for the last few weeks.)

The small print on the remote is very difficult to see, especially the dark blue print (on a black remote). The print on the combo player is even worse. I seldom record anything anymore. By the time I decifer the confusing instructions, locate my magnifying glass, rifle past the directions written in Spanish, French, and Italian, and finally find English, I've forgotten what I wanted to do.

To view a DVD you must push several different buttons on the remote, none of which are the "DVD" button. If you forget that the remote was previously used to view a VHS, you can push all the buttons you want, but nothing will happen UNTIL you push "DVD". None of the button combinations make sense. You'll be lost if you misplace the instructions or have a bad memory.

It isn't possible to record a DVD onto a blank VHS either. Whether this is typical of all combos I don't know, but I think it stinks.

Picture quality is fine, as is the sound. I've never had a VHS unravel inside the player.

I purchase the Philips DVD740VR DVD-VCR Combo as a gift for a
girlfriend. It worked correctly for a few months (when it was
actually being used), but the VCR no longer works (unless you
call a Blue screen with audio/noise working. Adjusting the tracking did not work, cleaning and adjusting the heads didn't work... my guess is that the playback heads are shot (how & why, Idon't know). Since then, the VCR is actually getting worse. The DVD works fine, but I paid for a combo.
BEWARE: DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE ! It may work OK for some people, but the amount of negative reviews I have read only
leads me to ponder making LEMON-ade.

I bought this model a year ago and love it! It's easy to use, easy to see and beautiful, and have had zero problems with it.

I bought a different brand for another room and have only used it 3 times since. That was about 9 months ago.

Guess which one I'm going to be buying again so I can get rid of the other? ;-)

Never recorded videos. Terrible manual. Terrible piece of kit. So disappointed, I doubt I will ever buy a Phillips again.
