Toshiba SD-1600 DVD Player

Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description
Toshiba's SD-1600 further refines the stellar model for DVD quality pioneered with the company's popular SD-3109 and SD-1200. Among the SD-1600's standout features are composite-video, S-Video, and ColorStream component-video outputs; Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel digital outputs; 10-bit, 27 MHz video digital-to-analog converters; and high-resolution (24 bits, 96 kHz) digital-audio converters.

ColorStream component-video connectors, located on most Toshiba DVD-video players and TVs, send an extremely high-quality signal from the DVD player to the TV. Typical NTSC artifacts--like video noise and dot crawl--are virtually eliminated in this connection method, resulting in a low-noise, high-detail picture with astounding color purity.

For video purists, the SD-1600 also offers PLUGE, a feature granting the player the ability to pass below-black (or blacker-than-black) signals, which in turn lets you accurately set black levels on your monitor--critical in a home theater. This player is also DVD and CD Text compatible, so if you're using a DVD Text- or CD Text-encoded disc, the player will display disc and song titles for your convenience.

A convenient feature called parallel video output lets you connect your Toshiba DVD player via composite-, component-, and/or S-Video outputs and watch simultaneous images from each connected TV or monitor. This is ideal for multiroom applications.

2 out of 5 stars Defective Defected Product.......2007-06-27

Thought I was buying a new product not a returned recondition one, The battery sent will not work with the unit, won't charge dead Portable DVD, now becomes Electrical DVD only

4 out of 5 stars This is great for traveling with children!.......2006-07-14

This portable DVD Player was a godsend on our family vacation last year. I am very pleased with this player because I spent a really long time surfing the internet and reading reviews. I has a difficult time choosing between this and three other models, so I wrote down the model numbers and went to Best Buy to see them for myself. I checked how good the picture quality was compared to the others on display and played around with the menu options. When I decided the Toshiba SD-P1600 was to my liking, I came home and ordered it online because Amazon was offering a much better price.

It has nice picture quality, a 4 out of 5, and average sound quality. It is better when you use headphones, but my son only cares about whether he can hear it, not how rich the sound quality is. If you jostle it around too much, it will stop playing, but otherwise, it is pretty sturdy. It plays widescreen and fullscreen formats without any problems. You can also fiddle around with the picture quality and screen brightness to make it more comfortable for viewing over long periods. The battery is a little unflattering because it is so big, but the player itself is very attractive. It is easy to store, but doesn't come with its own carrying bag. You have to look for a bag that will fit the battery, cords, and player snugly and I actually found a cushioned travel bag that came free from Lancome (cosmetics) that fits nicely! (You could always purchase a small portable DVD carrying case from Amazon.)

Our flight was 5 hours long and the battery (that came in the player) held up the entire time my son watched it, which was about 3 1/2 hours straight. We charged the battery before the flight home and he watched it 3 hours straight until he eventually fell asleep. This year, my daughter is old enough to be interested in the DVD player, so instead of buying two players, we bought my son a handheld LeapFrog Game and some Russian nesting dolls for my daughter. Between the DVD player, LeapFrog and dolls, we are hoping to have a relatively trouble free flight.

I definitely recommend this player for traveling on airplanes with small children and for hotel down times. I haven't tested it for car rides, but since I get carsick so easily, I wasn't planning to risk that happening to my children, at least not any time soon. Overall, this has been a good investment for my family.

5 out of 5 stars Good DVD Player, and I got it free!.......2006-05-13

This player is very convenient for long trips. If you want to save the money, you can get it Free from this web site: awesomestufffree.com/portabledvd

4 out of 5 stars Portable, light and versatile.......2006-04-22

You can play almost all sorts of media discs with this portable, light player.

2 out of 5 stars Quality Control Issues with this Product.......2006-04-20

I ordered this DVD player on-line. Straight out of the box it has a dead pixel on the screen. I foolishly ignored the many reviewers who received this player brand new with a fault. Look through all the reviews at Amazon, there are a few (which is too many) complaining about technical problems straight out of the box. You might be lucky and get one without a fault but I think it cost too much money to take that risk.

Also one of the reviewers mentions that a digital camera can be connected up to this unit. I was disappointed to find that this is not so. At least I cannot see how it can be done. None of the accompanying cables or cables with my digital cameras facilitate connection. There is a 'video-in' port but the manual explains this is for connecting a video cassette machine. There are some portable dvd players with USB ports so get one of those if you want to be able to connect your digital camera directly.

Apart from the dead pixel it seems a very good product. I don't agree with the ravings about how good the screen is from all angles. There is a limit to how good any lcd screen can be. Like all lcd screens this one can feel quite dark at times.

Sound is very good.

Bottom line is you need to know when you purchase a product that you have more than a good chance of getting one that works properly straight out of the box when it arrives. You simply don't have that guarantee with this product... however good it is when it works properly.

A dead pixel probably will not be noticed if you are buying this for your kids, but if you are an adult then that tiny 'snowflake' on your screen can be quite distracting at times.

I did not heed the warnings of others. Now my own warning joins the others. I hope yours wont be joining us!

I normally give 5 star reviews. Not this time, because of quality control issues at Toshiba.

Amazon.com Product Description

With the Toshiba SD1700 DVD-Video player, you'll get Toshiba quality and all the features common to Toshiba DVD players--for a bargain price. The SD1700's feature set includes parallel video output (great for multi-room viewing), Dolby Digital and DTS digital-audio output (for use with a surround-decoding AV receiver), Spatializer N-2-2 virtual surround sound (for making your two speakers sound like four), three slow-motion speeds, and an icon-based onscreen display for simple setup and adjustments.

Another key feature is the player's ColorStream component-video outputs. A component-video connection is the ideal way to connect a digital video source like DVD to a TV display (requires compatible inputs), resulting in increased image purity, and incredibly lifelike and very crisp color resolutions. The 10-bit D/A converter with high-resolution filter ensures excellent picture quality, while the 24-bit/192 kHz audio converter with dialogue enhancement renders clear and dynamic sound reproduction.

Some of the more convenient features are audio CD and DVD-R compatible playback, four forward and reverse scan speeds, and a unique first setup menu that assists viewers in accurately setting up their player to suit their system's capabilities. Parental lock, time search, camera angle select, and 4-power picture zoom are all included on this model, as are S-video, composite video, and coaxial digital outputs, giving you a wide range of connection options.

The SD1700 comes with a remote control and a one-year warranty on parts and a 90-day warranty on labor from Toshiba.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing for Toshiba.......2007-01-18

I purchased it becuse of the name, but that was obviously the only good thing about it. I realize it wasn't a lot of money, but I expected it to last more that a few months. I had to exchange it for another, and that one lasted about a year.

1 out of 5 stars Worst DVD Player ever made.......2005-02-15

I grant this DVD player does have a good picture. But it has a few problems with freezing and sticking video picutures. Glinches in it plays a DVD. Or not even able to read the DVD it self. I blamed it on the DVD's them self. But it turned out to be the DVD player. I also have problems with it not playing DVD. I put the DVD's in this Toshiba and they would not play. I took them to my neighbors and put the same DVD in their DVD player and they played. I would think twice on buying this DVD player again. I cannot even rate it for the problems it has casued. Also the DVD Player is under a class action suit becasue of these reasons.

5 out of 5 stars Working great after 2 1/2 years!.......2004-06-03

I must be one of the lucky ones, it still does everything as advertised. Even if it died today, I`m not going to whine about a $99 player because it didn`t last 10 years.

1 out of 5 stars No Audio because of bad capacitors.......2004-04-26

The wrong kind of capacitors are installed on C927, C928, C929. The sound will not work because of this. It is fixable and the fix is cheap if you know what your doing.

1 out of 5 stars Another one bites the dust.......2004-04-19

Like many others here, I also got burned by this unit. I bought this Toshiba SD1700 DVD Player used from a certain online auction site. It worked fine for a few months. Then the digital display on the front quit working and the sound stopped working also. I would stay away from this unit at all costs. I paid $60 for this player, then had to pay an extra $100 for a brand new Sony DVD player that actually works.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Long time owner.......2003-10-29

I have had the Toshiba SD-1600 for a few years now. We have never had any trouble playing dvd's on it. I'm looking for another dvd player. (This one for my daughter.) I was going to get one with a little newer technology, but after reading reviews on so many different brands I think I might buy another one of these. I was disappointed with how many brands seemed to die in the first year. If you are looking for a dependable dvd player this one would be a good choice.

4 out of 5 stars Solid piece of equipment.......2002-12-13

I don't know much about electronics, but I bought this machine over a year ago and it works great. I bought a television with component video on a friend's recommendation (he does know something about electronics) and the picture is UNBELIEVABLY BEAUTIFUL :-) I do know a lot about movies and I LOVE watching letterboxed DVDs on this machine.

I gave it 4 stars because I mean, it's only a DVD player. I don't know what it would have to do to get a fifth star, but it's a ... good machine and that this price, ridiculously cheap. Why waste hundreds of dollars when this perfectly fine machine is only 80 (it was 120 when I bought it).

I'm buying my sister one for Christmas

3 out of 5 stars Good for some, not for others.......2002-12-08

I've had this player for the better part of a year.

    Pros:
    Good picture quality
    Great fast forward speed
    Some nice features
    Decent price

    Cons:
Will not play anything on recorded media DVD +-R or +-RW
Will not play VCD or SVCD's

Overall, I loved the basic features of this player, but had to retire it as I was recording movies from a mini DV camera and could not get them to play at all. Toshiba says that there is no fix for this and that you need to get a new player.

If you do not care at all about media that you record yourself, this is an excellent player.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent when it works..........2002-12-03

I've had this DVD player for about a year, and perhaps 3-4 months ago, it suddenly started showing letterboxed or pan-n-scan format video apparently at will, regardless of the settings in the DVD player or in the disc's software. It developed a similar problem with languages, both audio and subtitles, shortly thereafter. It's currently so confused that I don't touch the settings as long as I get English and "a picture." I find it exceedingly frustrating to use the player, since it seems to basically ignore the settings I've selected.

Having said that, when the player works like it's supposed to, I love it. Other than the settings problems I've had, the DVD player has comported itself quite well, and has excellent playback, both audio and video. The settings menus are not laid out with perfect clarity, but I'm generally able to find what I need without having to resort to the manual.

4 out of 5 stars Very reliable DVD player........2002-08-10

This DVD player is very reliable, and very easy to use. It is perfect for me, and I love it. The audio and graphics are perfect for what I need. It's a very good choice for the money. The one thing that I would've liked that it doesn't have would be arrows on the front so that I didn't have to have the remote (which I always lose) to easily start a movie without having to go to the menu, then stop, then play, and so I could also navigate the menus. But, if you can keep a remote, and you would like a good, [reasonably priced] DVD player, this is for you.
