Pioneer DV-343 DVD Player

Pioneer DV-343 DVD Player

Product Description
From the Manufacturer
The Pioneer DV-343 DVD player includes a twin-wave laser pickup equipped with a 650-nanometer laser diode for playing DVDs and 780-nanometer diode for playing CDs, Video-CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs. The player automatically detects which type of disc is loaded and activates the appropriate diode to provide the optimal laser wavelength for playback. This design provides the best possible performance, regardless of format.

Along with great picture and sound quality, the DV-343 was designed to be user-friendly. One great feature is the 30-disc memory for storing DVD preference settings (like selecting 16:9 aspect ratio for your widescreen TV, or choosing the sound option that best matches your system).

The DV-343's video black-level expansion with Pluge is an essential image-enhancing feature for expanding contrast and producing the deepest blacks available in any video format. The black cutoff level ranges from 7.5 IRE NTSC standard to 0 IRE for wider grayscale contrast, which delivers more vibrant colors. Plus, the system is capable of reproducing "blacker than black" Pluge signals, critical for setting proper picture brightness levels.

The Dolby Digital and DTS optical and coaxial outputs, when connected to a receiver or amplifier with a Dolby Digital or DTS decoder, brings you the phenomenal experience of video through five discrete full-range channels. Stunning sound effects and crystal-clear dialogue are the most notable results of this connectivity option.

For convenience, Pioneer has added an advanced graphical user interface that simplifies control of a versatile range of operations, allowing all commands to be set up even as a disc plays. Basic mode keeps settings simple and displays function descriptions, expert mode allows audio/video enthusiasts to select among more detailed settings, and Guide Indication displays available operations and makes them easy to monitor.

2 out of 5 stars Skips easily, doesn't play DVD-R.......2004-06-11

I bought the dvd player two years ago, and it is already skipping with lightly scratched DVDs. Also, the machine does not play DVD-R (home-burned DVDs) well at all, so I suggest you buy an upgrade machine. Even if you do not burn your own DVDs, you may receive some from friends.

4 out of 5 stars once i found one that worked.......2003-12-29

i bought a dvd 343 player back in july of 2002 at a reputable retailer that ive been doing business for at least 20 years.my first two dvd players were defective, but my third one i got was a charm.so far it has brought me satisfaction ive watched alot of rentals on it.compared to an toshiba sdv 290 and a emerson i purchased at walmart they both were alot cheaper but they will not play mp3's or rewritable discs but i would like to find another dvd 343,but they discontinued them.

4 out of 5 stars Remote Control.......2003-12-03

Is a very useful item, quality in everything. The only thing is the Remote Control is very fragil.
I am looking to replace mine. I need it.
Somebody sell one, give me a shout.: rafus64@hotmail.com

3 out of 5 stars Good for the price, but doesn't last long........2003-01-25

I've had this player for almost two years, and it is a good *DVD* player for the price. Gives decent picture and sound on a 24" flat screen stereo TV; I'm sure its limitations would show up on a better system. Only issue is that it seems a little more sensitive than other players to scratched up rental DVDs-- only had problems with one or two out of 50 or so.

However, the other disc types (CD, VCD, CD-R/RW, etc) barely worked at first, and now no longer work. The player will chew on the disc for a while, then spit it out. When I first bought the player, some CDs would work, especially after a few tries. I probably should have addressed the issue when the player was still under warranty, but I didn't really have a need for the extra features so I didn't bother. (Now I'd like to be able to play VCDs, oh well.) Never had a problem with DVDs; I imagine the second pickup is defective.

Decent player for the price, but like most equipment in this price range, be careful about durability.

1 out of 5 stars BE AWARE.......2002-10-18

BUYERS, BE AWARE.
I had 2 DVD players made by Pioneer. They are nice machines... for a little over a year. Then the warranty expires. The problem these players seem to have has to do with poorly designed dual laser pick up (one - for DVDs, the other one - for CDs and Video CDs). The first player I had stopped playing CDs and Video CDs, I got the other one - this one stopped playing DVDs.
On the positive side - the picture is very good, so if you are after a short-term buy go ahead, otherwise look for another brand.
