Customer Reviews:
Excellent DVD/DivX Player this is a most buy.......2007-06-27
This player just plays whatever I throw at it. My only complaint is that you have to point the remote directly to the player in order for it to work.
INCREDIBLE DVD PLAYER.......2007-06-26
This unit is amazing. It takes up so little space and does a job that is fantastic. I would pay 400.00 easily for this unit. I have played some dvds I made myself on a dvd recorder and they look like high def. And the new non HD movies are just as good as HD when played on this unit. BUY ONE FAST!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!
Good with some minor drawbacks.......2007-06-15
Generally works very well and a great deal for the price.
Here are a few minor drawbacks
One time it locked up and had to turn the power off and on to get it to respond (this was not a faulty dvd).
Does not respond to faulty dvds better than most other players. This could be done in software, but for some reason most dvd players do not seem to scan ahead enough and overcome these spots (all players do this to a minor degree - but most not enough).
It appears to automatically stretch aspect ratio of some dvds to fill a 16:9 screen even when i do not want it to (it does a good job at this, just rather not have this feature).
The picture quality in general of the up conversion is suberb.
This device is slow..........2007-06-08
I purchased the Philips DVP5960 player based on reading the reviews and I had high expectations for this product. When I received it, the device was SLOW. It took a good 45 seconds for this player to load a DVD with divx files. Once I started playing the divx files, I noticed the player wasn't able to handle divx files with high bitrates. The player would drop frames to compensate to keep the audio in sync with the video; which wasn't always successful, the audio would sometimes lose sync with the video.
The second problem I experienced with this player, was playing normal DVD movies. After awhile, when a movie has been playing for 45+ minutes, the video would start to pixelate and the audio would drop in and out as if there was a scratch on the DVD (which wasn't the case). To be sure there was nothing wrong the movie, I put that same disc in another player and played the movie from start to the same point where it dropped out, and my other DVD player didn't give me any problems.
The last and final gripe I had with this product was the USB (one of the primary reasons I bought this player). For starters, the USB speed is 1.1, it's not 2.0 so this was problematic as the video/audio would sometimes skip when playing a divx file, as it can only transfer the data from the USB device to the player so fast. The other problem I had was with the interface. When you browse for a file on the USB device, the UI would only display the first 5-6 characters of a file name, and this makes it extremely difficult to navigate around and figure out what is what unless you go through each file individually.
Overall, needless to say, I wasn't all that impressed with this player, and I ended up sending it back to Amazon and bought an Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, with DivX.
For the price, it's hard to beat!.......2007-06-05
Let's start out with what should be obvious -- this is a low cost DVD solution for HD TV owners. I'd go one step further to say it's really for new HD TV owners, not those who've become major TV geeks who need perfect everything. Because this DVD player isn't perfect, but for the price (currently $65 here on Amazon) it's an excellent DVD player for your HD TV.
The remote -- yeah, it sucks, but most people will end up programming a universal remote at some point and throwing this remote in the closet. It's a generic remote, it does everything you need it to do. Who sits on their couch with the DVD remote by their side?
USB 2.0 -- This is the feature I most love. I've got a 4 Gig Flash Drive and video from it all the time. Upscales nicely. The only problem is the menuing system doesn't support long file names, but otherwise I love this.
Playback -- Never had a problem with any of my DVDs, whether they're American or European (this machine unlocks in about 10 seconds). Upscales TV and film really well, the sound quality is fine, etc ...
For a $60-$80 player, I really don't know that this player could be beat. You pay a little and get a lot.

Product Description
Philips DVP5140 Progressive Scan DVD Player, can play CD-R/W, DivX, DVD, DVD+R/W, DVD-R/W DVD-Video, MP3, MPEG4, Picture CDs, VCD, and SVCD. That's right, all of this in one small package for an incredibly reasonable price. All while delivering quality picture and audio performance. Component video output lets you connect this DVD player to your high-end home television set to optimize viewing quality.
From the Manufacturer
192KHz sampling enables you to have an accurate representation of the original sound curves. Together with a 24-bit resolution, more information is captured from the original analogue sound wave form, giving a much richer audio reproduction.
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and listening pleasure.
12-bit Video DAC is a superior Digital-to-Analogue-Converter that preserves every detail of the authentic picture quality. It shows subtle shades and smoother graduation of colors, resulting in a more vibrant and natural picture. The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.
The attractive enclosure has a very low profile.
DivX Ultra combines DivX playback with great features like integrated subtitles, multiple audio languages, multiple tracks and menus into one convenient file format.
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and viewing pleasure.
Picture CD is a CD-R or CD-RW disc on which you can store your MP3 and digital pictures. When inserting a Picture CD in the DVD player, a screen menu will pop up, showing your JPEG's and/or MP3 files on the disc. Just select the music and pictures files you wish to enjoy and press play or OK. You can watch your pictures on TV with your music playing simultaneously.
Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.
Other standard features include:
- 192kHz/24-bit audio DAC delivers high-quality audio.
- 12-bit/ 108Mhz video DAC for sharp image with natural colors.
- Ultra-slim design.

Customer Reviews:
Great unit for a great price!.......2007-07-01
I was searching for a dvd player that could play internation dvd's at a low cost. I did a lot (I mean.. A LOT) of research and most were all over $100+. After reading the reviews on how easy it was to "hack" this dvd, I was sold. I'm pysched!!! If you follow the directions provided by a previous post, you will have yourself a solid unit that plays ALL regions. I'm telling you.. it was EASY. Less than 10 seconds after getting this unit, I could play all the international dvd's that I wanted.
Oh, and the remote is just fine - no thrills but it does all the functions that you want and it's not hard at all to use.
Enjoy!
Lousy.......2007-07-01
The first two DVDs that I played worked fine but with the next two I got multiple errors, pauses and stuttering. All four of these DVDs were brand new. I had my old DVD player for 5 years and the only time it ever skipped was when I would get a dirty DVD from Netflix. I'm returning this tomorrow.
Wow, what a bargain. .......2007-06-30
I don't know all the technical details that go into this player. All I can say is that it played cd's burned from my computer, movies burned from the kids computer, bought cd's, dvd's, video clips put together by my niece,in short everything I have shoved in the little drawer, has played. I have had zilch problems. As for its durability, I have only had it about 3 months. It has had a good workout so far and seems to have staying power. It does look and feel well...almost fragile though. I don't allow the kids to store their disc's or the remotes on it or move it from room to room, so maybe that will help keep it running longer. It is a sleek and gorgeous piece of electronics. I bought the refurbished one for 40. It came sealed in a box with all the orginal paperwork.I think that so far this has been an excellent purchase. I am very very happy with the player. It was just what I was looking for and the price made it almost a steal.
Nice little DVD player.......2007-06-27
Works fine - nothing special. No eject button is a bit odd. It's a bit sluggish to respond. Plays all right.
so far so good.......2007-06-26
So far this works well, playing my avi files as well as kvcd's, svcd's and vcd's. Not sure about the longevity of the item, as I've only had it a few weeks.

Amazon.com Product Description
Tap into multimedia fun with Philips' broad-format, high-style, and ultra-slim DVP642 DVD player. The DVP642 is not only a high-end progressive-scan DVD player equipped to offer scintillating images on high-definition and HD-ready TVs, it's a tech-savvy player that spins your MP3- and JPEG-encoded recordable CDs (as well as Kodak's and Fuji's variants of the same) and CDs loaded with MPEG-4 and DivX video (3.11, 4.x, and 5.x files), perfect for viewing Internet-sourced content in your home theater. Want more? The player also converts Region 1/All Region PAL-formatted discs (the video standard in Europe) for viewing on standard NTSC televisions (and vice-versa, if only for video CDs).
The DVP642's progressive-scan functionality allows compatible TVs to display the even and odd numbered lines of an image in a single pass. This minimizes screen flicker, which is easier on your eyes.
|
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVP642 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
Playback options include five-disc resume, which lets you pick up where you left off on your five most recently viewed DVDs (not applicable for MP3 or JPEG CDs), disc-lock parental controls, and picture zoom for magnification of select images.
|
The player will play JPEG images one by one automatically, letting you zoom in, rotate, or flip the picture vertically or horizontally. For MP3 playback, the player offers track time display, album and track selection, and repeat (disc/album/track). The DivX media format is MPEG-4 based video compression that lets you save large files like films, movie trailers, and music videos on recordable media.
Philips' 4x video upsampling offers smoother images even when viewing interlaced (nonprogressive) signals through the player's component-video, S-video, or standard composite-video outputs. SmartPicture provides optimum picture settings for color, brightness, saturation, contrast, sharpness, etc., to enhance your overall viewing experience at all times.
A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.
What's in the Box
DVD-Video player, remote control with batteries, a user's manual, and an analog audio/composite-video interconnect.

horrible purchase.......2007-07-02
this is the second region free dvd player i purchased and as the first one, it stopped working after ALMOST 2 MONTHS OF USE!!!! please do not buy this item!!!!
WONDERFUL DVD / DIVX PLAYER.......2007-06-29
I've had this player since it came out like 2 years ago because i noticed it played divx. this thing works beautifully. only problem i've had with it is overheating because this baby can watch all kinds of formats and when you watch for a long time it builds up heat. all i did was bought a notebook cooler and placed it beneath it. now it stays cool and plays whatever i want without any problems. i love this player. the end.
sent product back.......2007-06-27
I sent it back, because it was not what I had perceived to be true. From the description, I thought it played DVD's from all regions, but it only plays region 1.
The worst product .......2007-06-23
Bought one Philips DVD player two years ago.It stopped working after several months.I bought another DVP 642 last Nov. in Circuit city, it stopped working again. the worst product I have ever used.Waste of time and money....
Save your $30 for something else..........2007-06-21
This is pretty much the worst DVD player ever created. I have noticed that the price on this piece of $#!% has been going down steadily for weeks. The problem with mine was that the audio and the visual did not seem to want to be on the same page, and yeah, that's kind of not good. I used it with two different TVs and had the same problem; you get through about 50 minutes or so of a disc and you can clearly see that the mouths are moving but they aren't saying the things coming out of the speakers. Save your money and buy a better DVD player or wait until the high def war has come to an end because progressive scan doesn't mean $#%! anyway.

Customer Reviews:
NICE DVD PLAYER, BUT IT DOESN'T PLAY JPEG VIDEOS.......2007-06-28
I bought this DVD player because it also plays sd cards. The still pictures played nicely (very clear), but my videos wouldn't play because it only supports mpeg, not jpeg. I also tried a dvd and it played very nicely, but as the player didn't suit my needs, so it had to go back.
Great Product.......2007-06-28
This player brings my iPod video to life. I got tired of headphones and the small screen for viewing my podcasts. This player brings my video podcasts to life and plays DVDs pretty well, especially self-burned DVDs. Highly recommended.
Good player.......2007-06-21
This is a good unit. The one I had before this was a tablet style and I hated it. It had to lean back on a leg in order to be stable. If you tried to have it sitting at 90 degrees it would tip over eventually. After a few times of that happening it died. I like this unit.
nice but the batter drains too quickly.......2007-06-15
The first one I received was defective. The LCD would flicker on and off. I contacted Amazon.com via online and they had me print out a returning label. Paste it on the packaging it came with and within a very short period of time (probably 2 or 3 days) I got my new replacement! -- They must have a fast receiving line!!! It got here faster than when I originally ordered it. LOL! This was my first experience replacing a defective unit from Amazon.com -- so I was very happy on the outcome. Great service!!
Now about the unit itself. It is quite nice. It plays all the video formats very well. I am also loving the fact that I can dock my video iPod (which is also black) and I can now view my iPod music videos in a larger scale. Plus I think it plays back DVDs that normally skip or stutter on my home "Philips" DVD Player. I can't explain it. On my home "Philips" DVD player the same DVDs stutter, but this portable unit plays them without a glitch all the way through. My home unit is the DV-260 model (probably over a year old) with the latest firmware -- I think?
This unit also plays very well when sending the signal to a screen projector of even 100x100 feet. The quality transfer is superb. I definitely would recommend this unit to photo/video montage services. Plus with the laser lens being so robust with all kinds of discs. It might never skip or stutter even if the discs are a bit scratchy or dusty.
The only quirks I got about this unit is that when I am viewing a Divx film. The digital counter is on by default. I have to always turn off the digital counter on the screen with the remote control. It doesn't do this with the iPod Video nor with DVDs (I haven't tried it yet with the SD Card or other formats yet). But with the Divx formats, I have to always turn off the digital counter with the remote control.
The other issue is that the battery drains pretty quickly. I think it allows you to playback only one DVD movie and after that you probably got a few more minutes until the unit shuts off by itself. I wish the battery would last a bit longer. I mean at least to playback 2 or 3 films at the very least.
I was very happy to have found this model. I was almost getting the newest one they only advertise at philips.com -- I don't know why they don't advertise this one. I love the iPod docking station. Maybe it got rejected because the battery doesn't last that long? Maybe the newest models without the iPod docking station lasts a bit longer, I don't know? But what I do know, is that I am fairly happy with this unit and also quite impressed with amazon.com's customer service. Thank you for replacing this unit so quickly!
Built in lithium battery won't charge........2007-06-11
I have had this device for 3 days. I had it plugged into a power outlet for 9 hours before I started using it, but the battery wasn't working. I called Philips customer service and they are FedExng me a new one. When I receive the replacement, they said I canjust send back the one I got no charge.
On power, this device works great. I am actually quite impressed at the picture quality for DVD player and how the ipod videos look. It took me a while to figure out how to get the widescreen ipod videos to look "normal" on the screen intead of all squished. I don't have too many ipod videos with 16:9 aspect ratio. If the battery arrived in working condition, I would give this 5 stars.

PET 1002 Portable DVD Player.......2007-06-11
Knowing nothing about DVD's including what the initials stood for, I relied on an internet search and viewer reviewes of the product. I Personally shopped in-store to see and evaluate some of the products and, finally selected the PET 1002 DVD because it met most of my needs.
Service delivery was great, with the product delivered ahead of schedule. Quality of picture excellent. Operation noise miminal. DVD's speaker sound quality fair to good and, the loudest I could find on the market of those I selected to shop for. However, with a medium-priced set of headphones attached, the sound is excellent and the volumn dial acutally produced too much volumn at the DVD's dial half-way mark. First use test was on a plane ride from D/FW to LA and the DVD worked perfectly with a beautiful picture and wonderful sound. Overall, a good investment. I'm happy with it.
Nice little player...but noisy drive.......2007-06-01
I just received mine from J&R. Very fast shipping!
I look forward to using this on my flights this summer. I bought it so my toddler could watch some kid friendly stuff on the plane. I am normally against having my soon to be 2 year old watch more than 30 minutes of ANYTHING, but hey on a flight there is no playground.
I tried this with a DVD+RW and it worked, so I am pretty happy that it plays all formats. That is more important to me than the whole resume where it left off issue.
A good buy! I wouldn't get it from Etronicsland if they offered it. I bought the 8 inch screen; they sent me the 7 inch. I sent it back at MY expense. What a rip off!
5 June...the drive is noisy even after the DVD loads. I may call Customer support to get it fixed.
Great -- except for the battery design.......2007-05-18
Great picture and audio. Excellent battery life. BUT the way the battery attaches to the player is TERRIBLE. The player cannot sit flat with the battery attached. The battery pack seems like it will fall off if the player is not carefully handled.
Also, this is not the player to casually slip into your hand luggage for a flight. It is heavy.
Finally, if it's important to have a large screen, good image quality and sound, why not spring for a small laptop computer. Great for travel, and it gives you a world more flexibility than any portable DVD player. (Of course, it costs significantly more.)
So Far, So Good.......2007-05-15
I have only used the unit a few times since I got it a month ago, but it does play all DVD formats without a hitch as advertised, including PAL format. I have used Shure E4Cs, Koss headphones, and Logitech portable stereo portable speakers, and I've been very pleased with the quality of the sound. The screen size and image quality are excellent. The unit is quite portable and seems durable and well constructed. Some detractors had carped in their reviews about start-up motor noise, but I didn't find it at all bothersome. Although I haven't had time to fully test the battery's limits, it seems to be good for at least 4 hours. So far, I have no regrets whatsoever regarding this purchase.
wonderful quality.......2007-05-14
This is by far the best portable DVD player that I have seen. A little expensive however; the quality and sound makes up for the price. I would highly recommend this product.
Wonderful quality

Great For What It Is.......2007-06-23
I got this a few hours ago and am extremely happy with the purchase. But I understood what I was getting:
- Sub $200 Portable DVD player - My Magnavox went out on me after about two years and this was the replacement. The picture quality is a bit better than the old Magnavox and it has much better features. I wasn't expecting HDTV quality with this, and it doesn't have that, but for a low-end portable player, this is great.
- iPod Player - I plugged in my 80G iPod and had NO problems whatsoever. Again, it is not HDTV picture quality, but it is a lot better than the little iPod screen for watching in bed or on a plane. My first try was Star Wars III and I was thrilled with the opening battle sequence.
This product will serve several purposes great: car entertainment for the kid for long drives, and airplane entertainment for the kid or me for long plane trips. In either case I can either use DVDs or the iPod, which is a nice choice since I now have the option to not haul DVDs on trips.
For less than $180 (and no tax or shipping for Amazon Prime) this was a great deal.
I have the 7" model.......2007-06-20
I thought that this item looked like it would be pretty awesome, since it plays so many different formats. One problem, if you listen to the player through with the headphones, you can actually hear the motor spinning the disc. The only way to not hear it is to blast the volume till you can't hear anything anymore. I exchanged it, and found the same problem on the second one. Philips wasn't much of a help either.
Travel Player you can't actually travel with!.......2007-06-20
Don't get me wrong, I like this player for a lot of reasons, but does it strike anyone else as odd that a portable player designed for travel and containing an international voltage adapter will not allow you to play legal DVDs purchased outside region 1 (North America). I bought it for international travel, so for me, it's close to useless unless I want to carry all my DVDs with me -- $200 down the drain.
One other niggling problem... You can't control the volume with the remote control
If you ever plan to travel with this player, don't buy it.
Read reviews but didn't buy yet........2007-06-20
I have been very interested in a portable DVD player for a long time. Especially one that dock a video iPod. Great.
After reading all the positive reviews on the Phillips DCP750 & DCP850 I wanted one but held back and went to Best Buy to see it person.
I liked everything about this one, lacking some features as stated in the reviews but you could live without the minor ones.
The killer for me was the Screen brightness. I tested 7 to 10 movies trailers on each Portable DVD player and the Phillips was the darkest and hardest to see. The Panasonic LS91 had the best looking and the most adjustment for brightness but it isn't a iPod docking one and the reviews say it has it's problems.
If the Phillips DCP850 had a better brightness to where you could view a movie in more detail (in other words normal) I would have walked out with one.
I suggest you check this one out in the store for your viewing pleasure and if you like it but it. I wasn't happy with the sceen brightness. You want to see what is happening in a movie don't you?
Thanks
Alan

New firmware fixed all HDMI issues.......2007-06-29
Got this player for its price and 1080P output. HDMI output used to freeze with Vizio VU42LF 1080P full HD tv. Called up Philips, called up Vizio - no solution. Flashed the player with new firmware (ending with 40) and all problems went away. Still have minor interlace issues with fast moving scenes (noticable by a person with 12 eyes). Divx/xvid output is excellent in 1080P, would have been better with faster GPU. Great value for money, nicely built unit, remote looks cheap. Mediatek is the not the greatest chipset, for this price I will not complain. Good job Philips and Amazon (for its best price/value)
Great versatile player with a few caveats.......2007-06-28
This is the best DVD player I've found for the media geek who needs a versatile player. It will play DVDs or DIVX movies or display photos from burned DVDs or USB jump drives. Upgrading the firmware is as easy as downloading it from the Philips website, burning it onto a CD-ROM, and inserting it into the player. And if you enter the unlock code 1,3,8,9,3,1 in the Preferences menu you can make it permanently region-free.
This misses getting five stars for a few reasons. The remote doesn't have separate "fast foward" and "skip forward 1 chapter" buttons: you tap 'forward' to skip a chapter and hold 'forward' to start fast-forwarding which is akward. The filter they use to upscale seems to have a lot of "ringing" artifacts and might not be as good as your video device's native upscaling filter. When playing from a USB device the file browser doesn't show long file names. It plays divx/xvid/mpeg4 movies but not high-res movies: 960x528 files fail with an "video resolution not supported" error. It also fails to handle ".srt" files correctly if you try to watch DIVX movies with subtitle files. No other player even attempts most of these features, so this is still the best and most versatile player I've found.
You get way more than you pay for!.......2007-06-27
I have been a happy user of Philips DVD players for some time, having at owned several models. Yes, I have had minor cosmetic issues in the past with the overly small and lightweight remotes, and the not-so-great on screen menu layouts and design, but overall they have delivered a quality image. I recently bought two Sony Bravia HDTVs and decided to go with this upconverting Philips model until I see how the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray war plays out. I have been astonished by the fidelity and quality of the image of regular DVDs played through this unit! Although my Bravia's only support 1080i (and not 1080p) I am still amazed by the detail this unit seems to tweak out of SD DVDs. Also, the footprint of this unit is tiny and matches the base of my Bravias in color and size, so it's a perfect design fit. I have not an issue with the on-screen menus. They are far better than previous Philips models. Also, the remote is the new-style design (where it looks like an actual product designer and not an engineer figured it out... but it's still small and a bit too light). My only complaint is that the upconverting happens only via the HDMI output. My Bravia's only have a single HDMI input, so I had to sacrifice that to the Philips DVD player, and use the component inputs for my DirecTV HD signal. I use quality cabling and could discern no difference to the DirecTV signal. I also used a quality HDMI cable and the DVDs I've played are pretty breathtaking with the upconversion. I watched Pan's Labyrinth recently and there was astonishing detail in the foliage especially. I plan to watch the (non HD-DVD versions) of the Planet Earth series and hope they are almost as spectacular as the Discovery HD Channel broadcasts. (Sorry, I just couldn't handle the Sigourney Weaver voice over on those, and had to get the original Attenborough versions!). Bottom line, if you want to wait out the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray war, then buy this for $70 and enjoy what you've been missing in your SD DVD collection! Also, I receive and play a lot of commercially purchased DVDs from the UK. With a simple series of remote control commands, I was able to unlock this player and make it region-free. It even handles the PAL conversion flawlessly! Try doing that with many Sony and other models!
A cheaply made dvd player.......2007-06-27
I will only give it 2 stars. The dvd player has issues.
Cons:
1. dvd gets stuck sometimes. Only way to recover is to power cycle.
2. DVD player makes strange noises when in idle.
3. The remote feels like a toy.
4. Even with the hdmi the picture quality is so so.
Excelent for the price.......2007-06-26
All I need in one cheap product: HDMI, Good Sound, USB connection to watch .avi movies on the TV, etc.

Does What it says on the box.......2007-05-16
Well priced product with good spec.
No reliability problems, looks good and works well.
I bought the US version whilst on a trip to New York, saving 50% of the UK price and the spec is better than the UK version (which doesnt play DivX althought the Euro one does)
It is easy to make it region free ( do an online search for a crack) and it is switchable PAL / NTSC so I can play any disc on it and also hook it up to most TVs.
Sound is good with headphones and fairly loud from the speakers if a bit tinny.
Very portable, and handy to have in the car when the blackwall tunnel closes and you can't get home.
Portable DVD - Philips PET724 7".......2007-05-16
This is the first portable DVD player I've owned or used. Have enjoyed its use. However, I find that the sound quality isn't great; in particular the volume at its maximum isn't terribly loud. Soft dialogue is sometimes hard to hear. Would recommend ear phones.
Great DVD player.......2007-04-21
I absolutely love this DVD player because it plays MPEG format and it can read all types of disks (DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW.) I transfer all my television programs from my TIVO to my PC and then burn them as MPEG files onto a re-writable DVD. Then means that when I am done watching my shows I can erase the disk and re-record it. I am able to fit between 3 and 5 hours of programing onto each DVD. The picture quality is great and the battery life is also very good. I take the DVD player to the gym with me so I can watch my favorite shows while I run on the treadmill. The size of the player is perfect for this purpose and the small remote control is an added bonus. I'll definately get another if this one ever breaks.
If you have any questions you can email me at [...]
Great perfomance and value for money.......2007-03-29
Great DVD player. Bought a non-branded machine 1-year previously at Best Buy for $100 that promptly expired as soon as the warranty ended. For almost the same price the Philips DVD is in a different league altogether. Looks sleek and stylish, bright, crisp display, no skipping or jumping, excellent sound, robust and sturdy, long battery life - what else is there? I wouldn't have even paid attention to the noise it makes on starting up if the other pedantic reviewers hadn't pointed in out.
Fine portable DVD; screen awfully small.......2007-03-26
Were I to start all over again, I should have seen these little guys in person first. 7" screen is too small, 1/3 of the lifting panel with screen is the speaker, delivering fine sound but taking up valuable real estate. Other than that, picture quality is excellent even in daylight and it works just fine. Huge benefit is 2 headphone ports, keeping peace in the car--if only they agreed on the movie!

Great DVD player!.......2007-05-09
The most wonderful thing about this DVD player is the fact the battery lasts for 6 hours. That's a rarity. The screen is crystal clear and the audio is great. I love this DVD player and would highly recommend it to anyone. The only down side and it doesn't really bother me a lot is that the drive is a bit noisy. The way to fix that is by tilting the DVD up in the front.
VERY NOISY FOR THE PRICE I PAID..........2007-05-07
This DVD player was recommended to me by my IT person, so I bought it without reviewing the "reviews" on this product and I am sorry I did...even she has taken it off her "recommend list" I returned the item and got a replacement and it was the same. It is just so noisy especially when the DVD starts up and somewhat noisy when running. Also the volume doesn't' go very high. In the car it isn't loud enough unless the player is sitting on your lap... ON a good note the screen/image is beautiful.
works for what i wanted.......2007-05-01
bought this so that my son (2yrs old) wouldnt drive me nuts on long flights. The battery is WONDERFUL, keeps going all the way to Cancun and then some. Screen is above average, what do you expect for something this small - its not hi def, but great for what we need (mostly cartoons).
Pretty Good Little Unit.......2007-04-15
Not a bad little unit. I read some reviews stating how it was sort of noisy but I kind of expected that anyway. If you're wearing headphones or have external speakers jacked in it's not an issue. All in all I'm happy with the picture and the performance.
Philips PET824 good and bad.......2007-04-10
Nice player in some ways (long battery life and good picture quality), but it doesn't handle any of my DVD's which are copies. It only seems to be able to play store-bought DVD's. Also, it doesn't seem to be able to do forward or reverse scans without the remote control. Overall, I'm not very happy with it.
