Apex DRX9000 Progressive-Scan DVD Player/Recorder

Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description
Archive home videos and share them with loved ones on a shiny DVD using the Apex DRX-9000. This DVD recorder features a built-in, 181-channel NTSC tuner so you can burn of-air programming right to write-once or recordable media, freeing you from reliance on poor-quality, hard-to-navigate VHS tapes. It comes with DVD editing software to help you make more professional-looking discs.

The DRX-9000 also happens to be a first-rate DVD player, offering high-end progressive-scan video outputs (viewable on high-definition and HD-ready TVs), JPEG image and Kodak Picture CD playback (watch a slideshow right on your TV!), and full compatibility with home-burned MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) CDs. Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DRX-9000 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. In any case, standard composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television, and Apex's active full screen function (AFF) helps resize widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) video images to fill 4:3 aspect-ratio sets.

For sound, a set of left/right analog-audio outputs channels audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each optical and coaxial) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

3 out of 5 stars Solid unit after upgrade!.......2005-01-04

I have two of these units and they perform great after flashing the firmware and having the power supply upgraded. Some have problems with overheating and need a second fan installed. More information on repairs and upgrades can be found at www.nerd-out.com/forum/ and www.drx9000repair.netfirms.com.

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor quality.......2004-11-11

A major theme with the DRX 9000 is a very high failure rate for the power supply. My unit was no exception. Shortly after having the power supply fixed the DVD read/write unit went out. It's pretty much a piece of junk right now. I bought mine from Walmart for $264, I see they no longer carry it. I would stay far away from this one.

2 out of 5 stars Power supply issues........2004-10-14

Let me first start off by saying that I like my other Apex DVD players. They are cheap, and do a good job playing DVDs. However, I have 2 of these and both of them have died due to the powersupply. I got the first one and it did fine until IC2 on the power supply blew about 1 and 1/2 years after I bought it. So I got another one thinking it was just a one time issue. That one lasted about 3 months and then went dark. I would not suggest this product to anyone. It is worth about 3-6 months of DVD viewing/recording and then poof... dead. I'm currently in the process of contacting Apex to see if they will provide me some wiring diagrams so I know what voltages go where. Then I'll connect some small PC power supplies to my 2 units and they should then be fine.

2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2004-07-13

As all the others, my power supply just died as well. They wanted $99 for me to fix this inferior product.

4 out of 5 stars Great DVD Recorder and Player.......2004-05-24

I love this unit. My wife bought it for me as a Christmas gift in 2003. I have it hooked up to a DIRECTV set top box recieving HDTV. The recording quality it perfect. Well worth the money in my opinion.

I went onto the APEX web site and got the firmware upgrade, which as easy to install in the unit. Simply copy the firmware on a CD via their web site and load into the DVD player and it will upgrade itself.
