Wonderful little player.......2007-06-26
I am so glad that I purchased this DVD player. We have used it to entertain my children on long trips and I use it several times per week at the gym. It is a well-made little player with a conveniently compact size. My favorite feature is the Subtitle function because I find it much easier to watch a movie where the dialogue is printed than to try to hear it in a loud environment like an airplane or a gym. The one criticism I have of the player is that the maximum volume isn't loud enough, but fortunately the Subtitle feature takes care of that for me. And my children have never complained so it must be sufficiently loud for them when they are wearing the ear plugs. For the price, I doubt you could find a better player.
Above Average Product Overall - Average Audio/Volume levels.......2007-03-22
I tried out my new PET320 and was fairly satisfied with the quality and finish of the product. I played one of each, a DVD, a VCD, an Audio CD and a mp3 CD, and to my surprise the DVD and Audio CD gave out a relatively lower volume output at MAX volume than the VCD and mp3 CD. But fair to say that the volume levels are enough to enjoy a movie from a distance of 2-3 feet, which would be your normal viewing distance for this 3.5" screen. The audio seemed to sound more crisp while using the Rock equalizer settings rather than the Default. One thing that I did not test though is the volume levels when you have some disturbance around, and I think that it might need a lot to be desired in that area. The picture quality is good and the player has a very rugged and compact look, and it would be fairly safe to say that the disc mechanism would be reliable owing to the Philips brand name. You get what you are paying for and more, since a lot of stuff is bundled together in the package including car kit, pouch, AV cable and earphones among other things. It would have been great if Philips threw in a small remote in that price, but maybe in future models. The retractable stand could be annoying in the beginning, but once you get the hang of how much force you need to apply it just works fine for what it is made for. I connected this to my TV and the picture quality was perfect, only thing that the volume won't increase much beyond a certain point even if I crank up the TV volume. Ideal for places where you cannot carry your TV with you, and still need DVD entertainment.
Philips PET320 3.5 Portable DVD Player.......2007-02-06
Just what I wanted for airplane traveling or on the road.
Great.......2007-01-10
Got for my son for Christmas and he loves it! He claims it is really neat.
Great DVD Player.......2006-11-03
This is a great little portable DVD player. Only one complaint---the sound is poor when not using headphones--but what can one expect for such a small player? Overall, a great buy!

Record your favorite TV programs in digital quality and play any movie format including DivX with full surround sound on this complete and unique HDD & DVD Recorder Home Theater System.
Feature List
- i.LINK digital input for perfect digital camcorder copies
Also known as IEEE 1394 and FireWire. i.LINK is the worldwide standard for connecting digital video devices, used on digital home video equipment such as DV and D8 camcorders, as well as PCs. Conveniently, it carries all audio and video signals via a single cable. With i.LINK Digital Video input you can copy your home videos in their original digital picture quality.
- VCR Plus+ for quick and easy programming
With the VCR Plus+ system, all you need to do to program your video recorder is to enter the `Pluscode' - a single code of up to nine digits (but usually less) that is printed next to each TV program in most TV guides.
- Dual Media records on both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW
Philips DVD Recorders support `dual media' recording - the ability to create recordings on DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs. Now you can buy any disc and the Philips recorder will always create fully compatible recordings, which can be played by any DVD player.
- FlexTime to watch the beginning while recording the end
With FlexTime you can watch a program while it's still being recorded, thanks to the extreme speed of a Hard Disk.
- Pause Live TV lets you take a break without missing a thing
A very large built-in memory records the program you are currently watching when you press the pause button. When it suits you, you can resume the program from the moment you pressed 'pause' as if you're watching a live program.
- Record up to 100 hours of TV on the 80GB hard drive
- DTS, Dolby Digital and Pro Logic II surround sound
A built-in DTS and Dolby Digital decoder eliminates the need for an external decoder by processing all six channels of audio information to provide a surround sound experience and an astoundingly natural sense of ambience and dynamic realism. Dolby Pro Logic II provides five channels of surround processing from any stereo source.
- Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality
Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.
- Movies: DVD, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, (S)VCD, DivX
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and viewing pleasure.
- Music: CD, MP3-CD, CD-R/RW & Windows Media Audio
Multi-format playability allows you to play most disc formats for maximum disc compatibility and listening pleasure.
- Picture CD (JPEG) with music (MP3) playback

Customer Reviews:
Hard to review because HDD/DVD recorder needs repair........2007-04-25
I had watched a total of three DVDs using the HDD/DVD recorder when the loading drawer became stuck (as signiifed by a "BLOCKED" message on the unit's screen). I had not yet tried to record a DVD. I actually thought that the "BLOCKED" message was because I was trying to record something from the HDD to a DVD. I'm still not sure if this can be done.
The home theater surround sound works very well in my viewing setting. I don't have a large room, so the relative distortion and audio response profile is not very demanding.
I give the HDD/DVD Recorder 1 star based on reliability and 5 stars based on the premise. Based on my setting, I give the home theater stereo 4 stars for the money. The total best that I can give the entire package is 2 stars.
Great system, but remotes leave a lot to be desired.......2007-04-01
Sound system is great. DVD player/recorder is great. All the features I've used so far seem to work as expected. However, the remote controls are not so great-- especially the DVD remote. The sound system remote is okay, except it has DVD controls that apparently don't do anything for the DVD system. What's the point? The DVD remote is smaller, the buttons are tiny, and not so intuitive. For example, to get to a DVD menu, you have to push the "DVD" button. To fast forward or review, you hold down the chapter advance buttons (|
<
< and >>|). So, if you don't hold it down long enough, you end up advancing an entire chapter. Why couldn't there be separate buttons like every other DVD player?
Annoyances with the remotes aside, it's a great system. So, I recommend it to anyone who's patient enough to learn how to use the remotes.
Good Value.......2007-01-21
I purchased this unit about a week ago at a local Walmart for $348. So far it seems to be a really nice unit for the money. DVD movies sound great as well as music. Recording to the HDD is easy and picture quality is very good. I have not tried recrding to a DVD disc yet.The 3 hour buffer is nice and you can set it to not clear when you change channels if desired. A couple of minor gripes:
When using the buffer, you cannot fast fwd or rewind continously as you can with a TIVO. You can press the arrow buttons to move back 10 seconds or 30 fwd, or you can press the chapter buttons to go back and forth 5 min at a time.
***update** You CAN ffwd or rewd by pressing and holding the chapter buttons
There is a seperate remote for the dvd & home theater units. It appears you always need both. ALthough the home theater remote has buttons to control a dvd I have not found a way to get the dvd to respond to it. Also, I have not found a way to control at least the volume of my Sony TV with either remote.
Overall it appears to be a very good value
Its a great deal for the price.......2007-01-12
This is not the top of the line receiver or speaker, but its a pretty good deal for the money, The DVR works great and makes life easier.

Keep looking...unless you want a disposable DVD player........2003-09-06
I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who has had problems with this machine. It worked great for months (but much less than a year) then suddenly it would no longer play discs. I took the cover off to see if there was anything I could possibly fix and a piece had totally come loose, the main part responsible for spinning the disc. Needless to say it was beyond my help. It's dumpster material now. Please don't waste your money, too.
Disposable DVD player-.......2002-11-25
This dvd player worked fine for about 7 months starting last January, and then started to exhibit a small amount of occasional skipping, and would freeze up every so often. Player would become frighteningly hot during/after playing a movie. It is now fully non-functional, a movie will skip constantly- there is no point to even try to play one. All of the reviews are true, this machine is an honest LEMON. Amazon.com needs to add a no-star rating, one star was far too generous.
horrible!.......2002-10-02
Skips/Freezes on disks. Just when you get into a movie it will freeze/skip so horribly that you cannont continue watching. We didn't discover this until after the 6 month warranty ran out and Philips' solution was for us to pay ...for them to replace it with the same defective model. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.
Great at first, but now...?.......2002-09-20
This machine ran fine for a while then we started having problems with it skipping repeatedly and freezing. You can't get the disk out when it has frozen...you have to wait for it to finish "thinking" and that is so annoying! Some days, it works fine, then a rash of skipping and freezing again. Plus, it tends to overheat..the disks would come out very, very warm. Right now, it plays the disk, but there is no sound, so the kids are having to watch their movies on the computer DVD-rom. I think my husband would agree, this player doesn't hold up at all.
Don't even bother.............2002-08-31
I just was recently given this DVD player as a christmas gift. The DVD player worked perfict with great video and stereo sound when I got it, and only skipped on a few DVD's. Then in augest the DVD player just suddenly decided it didn't want to turn on anymore, and now I'm stuck with a broken DVD player. I tried to replace the fuse in the player but it still didn't want to turn on, and when I tried to contact Magnavox support, they had nothing on this issue. In my opinion, this player isn't worth your time.

Philips makes it easy to create recordings and helps eliminate any confusion over disc format with dual-media support, enabling you to use DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW discs to record up to six hours of MPEG2 compressed video on a single-sided disc. For playback, it's compatible with VCD, SVCD, CD-R/RW, MP3-CD, and MP3-DVD disc formats and the EG2, MPEG1, Divx (3.11/4/5/6.x), and MPEG4 compression formats. It also supports simultaneous playback of JPEG pictures and MP3 music, enabling you to run a photo slideshow with music playing in the background.

Customer Reviews:
NEVER BUY PHILIPS!!!.......2006-09-01
If you're thinking about buying a Philips, THINK AGAIN!! Their products are absolutely TERRIBLE, and their customer service and policies are even WORSE. I can relate to the other customers and their reviews. I am currently on my THIRD DVD-recorder because they just keep breaking down without warning. The last one I had broke after just SIX WEEKS. And God help you if you try to call their customer service center! All they tell you to do is spend YOUR money to ship back THEIR faulty products. They refuse to do anything the least bit helpful, claiming it's "Not their policy". Not their policy to satisfy their customers?! Apparently not, because I am FAR from satisfied.
PLEASE reconsider buying anything by Philips! Or if you DO make that fatal mistake, do yourself a favor and return the product to the store, get your cash back, and buy something reliable like a Sony or Panasonic. Trust me---you'll be glad you did!!
Rated 3 stars because there's always hope with firmware upgrades.......2006-07-11
The following are my issues with the DVDR3355:
Sometimes a recording on DVD-R media did not allow Fast Foward or Rewind. There was a similar issue that a firmware upgrade was meant to resolve: Before the upgrade all finalized DVD-R could not be FF on the device but would be perfect on another player. Now it became erratic: sometimes it's possible to FF sometimes it's not (even on other DVD players), which is frustrating.
When the EDIT menu is poped-up I cannot FF or FRW because the remote buttons to do that are the same to navigate the menu system. It's a pain trying to find the index picture if you've missed it because you can't go back without exiting the Edit menu, which brings another issue:
Exiting the EDIT menu always makes the device to UPDATE the disk, regardless if you did any actual edit or not. This is such a simple software issue to resolve that I can't believe philips did not make it into a firmware upgrade yet.
I can't change the video aspect unless there is no disc on tray or tray is open. I can't accept that an expensive device like this one does not let me change the display aspect "on the fly" like any (unexpensive) other DVD player around (including DVD players from philips)
My brother owns another DVDR3355. He lost unique, very important recordings (the 2006 world cup final for instance) that took 2 hours recording because the UPDATE of the disk failed after the STOP was pressed. His device also did not seems to be able to record successfully on DVR-RW media from philips (and perhaps any other brand). My own device do not have this problems tough.
There seems to be impossible to RECORD in 16:9 aspect (widescreen). I own a Widescreen digital camera (Panasonic PV-GS59) but I've found no way to record on my DVDR3355 in widescreen using the front CVBS inputs (I did not tried the other inputs nor the MiniDV input - firewire - because I did not own a DV cable yet - and yes, I made sure the camera was outputing int 16:9 before you ask :-) ).
Many operations are DAMN TOO SLOW. Ejecting a DVD can take up to 30 seconds. Boot up can take this or much longer (up to 1 min). If I tried to Eject just after powering on, the device seems to freeze. If I operate too fast the remote, the device sometimes seems to freeze for up to 1 min (one time even requiring me to click the power button on the device because the remote wasn't responding).
I think the firmware of this unit and it's menu system to be pretty much in beta stage and still too much stupid. Overall I liked the unit because I really wasn't expecting too much from it, but I was TOO MUCH disapointed by the firmware and Menu/Operation. I was very satisfied with my previous philips players and found them simple to use, but this DVDR3355 usage is cumbersome. I also thought that this device would be full of new features because it was such a modern concept, but instead it was a rather primitive DVD player compared to more "ancient" pure DVD players. This device is really a recording one and do not replace your (old) top-notch DVD player / Home Theater system.
If it was not for the menu and firmware I would rate it 4 out of 5, which means that a future firmware upgrade could make me this happy. Today, with the menu and firmware issues I will rate it 2.5 out of 10. Since I did never own any other DVD recorder to date (not counting PC based ones) I can't be sure if there is a DVD recorder that is better than this unit today.
Good recorder for the price.......2006-04-06
I don't see what the problem is. I've had this model for a few months now and have had no unexpected problems. It does play both -R and +R discs perfectly, and easily records to anything but DVD-RAM. If you've been experiencing playback problems, then the issue is most likely with the write on the disc itself. On the downside, and like most every set-top DVD recorder, the recorded discs probably won't play in other machines without reauthoring. And, the remote control is lacking features commonly found on others. But, overall this is a fantastic recorder for the price.
Why make DVD recorders when you can't make them right?.......2006-03-22
I made the fatal error to buy a philips recorder last year. it started screwing up after 7 (!) recordings so I took it back. It did the same after 20 recordings and I took it to be serviced for a second time. When I got it back it wouldn't even read the disc!!! I had to yell at them to get a replacement and I got the 3355 model today! It did exactly the same thing that user Brad Smith described and YES it is a really frustrating experience. Avoid Philips products or at least their DVD recorders!!!
Turns on randomly when timer is programmed!.......2006-02-03
First DVD recorder I have owned. Bought it for Christmas. Easy to install and set up. But, when I programmed it to record a future show and put it in stand-by mode (per Philips' instructions)the damn thing would come on at random times and stay on. I had it all of two weeks and called Philips. They said "it's not supposed to do that." I had to pay to ship it back to Arkansas for repair, where they kept it for two weeks and did NOT notify me when they were shipping it back. Got it back and guess what? They didn't do a damn thing to it! Still the same problem. Called Philips and asked why they didn't fix it. (Even the gal I talked to in their Phillipines call center knew why I sent it in for repair.) Even included a letter re-stating the malfunction. No matter. They didn't do a damn thing.
Went up the chain of command with Philips but they wouldn't budge. They want me to send it BACK AGAIN so they can have another chance to fix it! I told the gal in Canada that I couldn't possibly be the only one with this problem and now that has been confirmed. It's going back to my home theater guy tomorrow and he can use it as a boat anchor. I'm getting a SONY and will NEVER buy a Philips product again!

The DVDR75 is also a first-rate DVD player, featuring progressive-scan video outputs, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround sound passthrough, MP3 CD playback (CD-R/CD-RW), and compatibility with most DVD media (including video-mode DVD-R and DVD-RW).
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVDR75 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
Top-of-the-line component-video inputs and outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite- and S-video inputs and outputs bring compatibility with nearly any video component and television monitor. Audio inputs consist of two-channel analog jacks with 16-bit analog-to-digital conversion and Dolby Digital 2.0 audio compression (compression is non-defeatable).
Two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. If you don't have a surround receiver or six-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: 3D Surround simulates surround sound through two speakers (even the stereo speakers on a TV).
What's in the Box
DVD recorder, remote control, batteries, user's manual (in English only), one blank DVD+RW disc, an AC power cord, a stereo audio interconnect, a composite-video cable, an S-video cable, and a coaxial RF antenna cable.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.......2007-02-25
We purchased this product new for $500.00. It never worked correctly. The video to DVD transfer was never true from the originals. It would make it too bright. It's also extremely sensitive, so if your video is snowy, it may not record it or skip parts. It crashed while watching DVDs. Every time I tried to contact them, they would have me speak to someone in India and I would only get software upgrades. This product has also been discontinued. Philips products are terrible and their customer service is even worse. I also had color issues with one of their TVs. I wasted much of my money and time. I hope you won't do the same.
BEWARE: DVDs are non-standard & incompatible.......2006-11-29
BEWARE: DVDs are non-standard & incompatible
I am bitterly disappointed with the Philips DVDR-3400 recorder, and suppose that all of its line has the same problems.
I did not find out until I had burned 300+ DVDs that the disk directory structure created by these Phillips machines is defective. The main title on the disk you make will appear to "play" on your home DVD player... but ALL of the post-recording edits made (cutting out parts you didn't want etc.) are LOST.
AND most PC-based DVD players and other software won't handle the disk, so if you wrote your home movies to disk for long-term archiving, you're out of luck.
I don't know how a company the size of Phillips can release such a piece of crap. They HAD to know of these problems. I am sick to think of the time I have lost. All I have is junk to show for it. And yes, I did everything right (finalizing the disks etc).
Add to this the terrible remote control with rubbery, no-feedback keys that often don't work; little provision for using the deck for playback, etc. etc. (read other's complaints) and you have a real loser here.
I bought my first Phillips tape recorder in 1968. I will never buy another Phillips product.
Save your money - DO NOT BUY!.......2006-05-25
I have owned this recorder since October 2003 and it worked wonderful for about 12 months or so. Right after the one-year warranty mark was over...it started to shut itself off. Sometimes it would go as much as 50 minutes before shutting off and other times, it shuts off the first couple of minutes. Either way, I have tried calling customer support prior to the warranty period being offer, and they insisted that I have received a replacement unit. Not true. To be honest, I cannot tell you how many times or hours I have wasted with these people and got nothing. I am going to sale the lame thing in my garage sale for probably $25.00....that is $325.00 less than what I bought it for. It's worthless....but another brand. I will never ever in this lifetime own any other product by Philips again. Very bad customer service.
Just like everyone else........2006-05-12
Well from reading the other reviews I can only add the same ole same ole. Purchased in Nov 2003 worked pretty well until 2 months ago.Seems like we are reaching the max use range on this product. Disk errors started cropping up, would not read the disk it just wrote too etc. etc. I just got word from the repair store today and the laser lens is shot and $350 to repair, needless to say what my decision was. Less than 3 years of use and now I have a VERY expensive DVD player. (while that lasts but who knows for how long). Customer "no service" at Philips could seem to care less. They spend 10 minutes getting your personal information and 3 minutes on diagnosis. All in all I can't recommend the machine or the company. I may make the same mistake on a different manufacturer or model but I won't make it again on a Philips product.
Everything dies, I guess..........2005-12-11
As of the last month or so, my Philips DVDR75/17, purchased in early April of 2004, is clearly giving up the ghost and approaching the "white light", so to speak. We had a very happy relationship up until then, created hundreds of DVDs both for personal use and family/loved ones from various media sources (VCR, DVD movies, camcorder/digital camera) and I loved it very much. After coming to enjoy and even rely on it as much as I have over time, it is rather heartbreaking (and extremely frustrating) to watch it slip into a sort of state of senility, as it has recently.
I remember, I bought it on the same day that the only DVD player I owned at the time officially kicked the bucket, after about two years of happiness and then a few weeks of symptoms {I sense a pattern here...hence the title of this review}. I went out looking for a new player and came home with my first - and so far, only - recorder. Go figure. Initially, this silver, bulky, boxy, sterile-looking thing was a very intimidating beast and I was very tempted to take it back to the store the next day, but once I got used to all of the features and editing capabilities (e.g., the System Menu, removing commercials and creating screens for individual titles via 'FSS', etc.) I found it to be quite user-friendly. Once I realized that I could record onto DVD+RWs, edit the recording to my exact tastes in FSS and then select the 'Make Edits Compatible' option and pop the finalized DVD+RW into the DVD R/RW drive my laptop and generate a duplicate copy on a standard DVD+R with edits intact, that sweetened the deal for me [it should be noted here that although edits/chapter insertions can be made on a DVD+R recorded directly from the DVDR75, those edits will ONLY SHOW UP WHEN PLAYED ON THE PHILIPS DVDR75 ITSELF, NOT ON ANY OTHER STANDARD DVD PLAYER].
Anyway, I see that many other owners (prior, current & otherwise) have testified to the same problems I'm having now - disc freezing, the dreaded 'Disc Error', and so forth - so I won't be too redundant. I understand now that this is a common problem, that the laser on these things pretty much start to go after about 600 burns or so, according to one person.
There's one thing I could never understand regarding this recorder. Or rather, the ridiculous directive given in the ludricrous manual (I swear this is one of the most absurd Owner's Manuals you'll probably ever read in a lifetime of owning stuff; if you don't believe me go to Philips' webiste and download a copy for yourself) which states that you should NEVER, EVER use a DVD drive cleaning disc on this unit. How can you NOT use a cleaner on a DVD player (even if it IS also a recorder) after months and/or years of usage? Maybe this was Philip's intention - if you ever had to call customer service when and if the thing broke down on you, they could blame YOU when they asked you if you've used a disc cleaner on it and you said 'yes'. This is pure speculation though. I have not called customer service, and from what I've read from other owner accounts they're absolutely useless anyway.
So, why am I giving this product three stars? Well, I guess I paid somewhere in the area of $300 for my unit, and for what it's worth I'd have to say that it more than made up for the price I paid, in terms of all of the DVDs I was able to create/recreate. I'd have to say that the picture quality is excellent up to about the 3rd or 4th record speed setting (it has 6 in total), editing is easy, and you can create a really nice picture in the Title Menu screen for each chapter. If you're feeling really creative, you can use your PC to create special intros and pictures for your recordings, but that's a whole 'nother story. It's a good unit - WHILE IT WORKS. I know this product is no longer manufactured by Philips; I think it had been discontinued right around the time I bought it. I chose not to purchase an extended warranty after the 90(?)-day warranty expired, but I have no regrets. But I think I'll try to buy another one. The price has gone down significantly since I bought mine, and there are a few floating around out there if you look hard enough.
To anyone who might feel compelled to seek one out based on this review, I would suggest that you try to find one which is new, or rather, UNUSED - not 'like new', not 'only used a few times' ("everybody lies" - ©House, M.D.), not 'refurbished to manufacturer's specifications (unless there's a really good return policy), but UNUSED. I think you'll enjoy it once you get used to it. But don't expect it to last forever. Remember - everything dies...

Ridiculously weak features- No "time" or "time remaining".......2007-03-25
I was looking for a cheap DVD player to replace my even cheaper broken DVD player. This one actually has less features than my cheaper DVD player, with inexplicable gaps. For example, you can select what time in the movie you want to jump to, but you cannot view the time in the movie that you are at. Not to mention there is no way to see how much time is left in the movie. It's hard to understand how the designers could leave such a fundamental function out of the player. Even old VHS players can do this. Magnavox: Stupid. Very stupid.
Another problem is the lack of a 2nd video out, which my cheaper DVD player had. Not to mention 2nd audio outs. I understand these may be missing from cheaper DVD players nowadays, but the lack of a display function for time and time remaining is just mind-boggling.

I found this unit easy to use and space saving. The vertical position of the unit made it easy to find a place for. I have enjoyed this unit.
Fabulous!!.......2006-11-07
This is the second DVD580M player I own. This little machine plays formats that my $500 Sony didn't and it fits almost anywhere. Easy to use and plays a great picture. For the price, you can't beat it!!
Started out great but..........2006-10-28
Less than two months after receiving my new PHILLIPS DVD player, it is now sitting in my TRASH CAN! The PHILLIPS DVD player refused to eject the dvd, saying there was no disc inside. I called the 1-800 HELP number (YA RIGHT!) which came with my PHILLIPS DVD player for assistance and received NONE other than to offer to tell me where I could go to have my less than 2 month old PHILLIPS DVD player repaired at MY OWN COST! In my opinion, this shows that PHILLIPS does NOT stand behind their products, and this PHILLIPS DVD player was a piece of JUNK! I guess you get what you pay for.
Awesome DVD Player! Great Image & Sound with Composite Link!.......2006-05-06
I previously owned the Coby DVD-224 Compact DVD Player, and for some reason the Progressive Scan outputs on the Coby was not working with my HDTV Flat Panel LCD. So I needed something similar in size with Progressive Scan capabilities. Sadly, most high end Progressive Scan DVD players are large, flat and wide, and also extremely expensive.
I saw this one online for only $47.99 and spent some time deciding between this and the Memorex MVD2030 Vertical Progressive-Scan DVD Player ($79.99). I decided on this one since it was cheaper and I wanted something simple and easy.
After a week of use this Philips DVD580M Lifestyle DVD Player really impressed me. The sound and image outputs are very crisp, clean and smooth thanks to the progressive scan output. The controls and outputs are numerous and useful.
There is a full interactive menu for the player itself that enables the owner to adjust and tweak just about everything from channel output (sound), to color/video output schemes.
I thought the menu were a little too much above simplicity for my tastes (most users will only select the best sound and visual output once and never go back to these controls again).
The Remote Control was also tactile and easy to use compared to sony remotes. My only complaint was that the remote is almost as big as the player itself. And the remote has an extra 3 inches at the bottom with controls for what seems to be some other "phillips" devices and a Multichannel audio surround sound reciever. Unless you have an appropriate Phillips brand receiver/theater system the controls don't work. Also the extra outputs don't seem to work for anything other than phillips branded receievers. I tried to hook up to my Sony theater box and there was no resulting sound, I also tried my Altec Lansing Computer surround sound/sub woofer system and got the samething.
So unless you have a phillips brand or high end multi channel receiver the result is that you'll have a larger remote with extra buttons that do nothing and extra sound outputs on the back of the player that also do nothing. At any rate the normal L and R outputs provided really great sound thru my Samsung Flat panel LCD speakers, then again my TV already has really good speakers.
The player also the ability to play music DVD-Rs, CDs and CD-Rs as well as MP3s. You can also view JPEG picture files that are saved on a CD-R/CD-RW on your TV thru the player. It also creates a slideshow for presenting vacation photos, etc...
Finally my favorite feature is the way DVDs and CDs load & eject thru the slotted opening on the glass front. It is very cool-looking and easy to do, you'll wonder why DVD makers still make clumsly DVD trays instead of these smoothly functioning slots.
The player also came with a solid steel stand and like the player itself everything is built with really great craftmanship and quality (ABSOLUTELY no cheap plastics are used here). This is evident in the weight of the player. It's not heavy, but when you pick it up the firm wieght makes you know it's expensive and built with the best of materials.
I would recommend this product, but probably can't because I believe I may have bought the last one for sale anywhere at the moment. But if you see this player for sale get it and you will be very happy.
Perfect for the van!!.......2005-08-29
We have had this unit since December of 2002 - we use it at home and in the van on trips (we have 13 inch TV/VCR combo that we also take with) We set it on the floor in between the front seats and have no problem with skipping etc. This is a great little unit!!

Amazon.com Product Description
Enjoy all your favorite DVD movies in flicker-free presentation and record your favorite TV programs to disc--via the built-in NTSC TV tuner--with the Philips DVDR3355/37 DVD Recorder.
For setting up timed recordings, the DVDR3355/37 uses the VCR Plus+ system. All you need to do to program your video recorder is to enter the "Pluscode"--a single code of up to nine digits (but usually less)--that is printed next to each TV program in most TV guides. This unit also includes a Firewire port (also known as i.LINK and IEEE 1394) on the front, enabling you to easily connect your digital video camcorder and download video and audio directly to disc in their original digital quality.
Recording and disc editing features include chapter marker, insertion, divide, erase, manual chapter marking, one-touch record, and selectable index pictures. Other features include a 20-event, 1-month programmable recording, daily/weekly repeat recording, Dolby Digital encoding, and tri-lingual menu display (English, French, Spanish). It offers the following video and audio connections:
- Composite AV (RCA) In: 2 (1 front)
- Composite AV (RCA) Out: 1
- S-Video In: 2 (1 front)
- S-Video Out: 1
- Component Video Out (Y PB PR): 1

you get what you pay for i guess.......2006-11-04
I purchased this dvdr because the price was right and because it had the ability to record shows on a daily/weekly basis (I had previously purchased and returned a Panasonic brand that was more expensive but did not have this capability). After having it for a couple of months, I am finding that it has a number of annoying "quirks".
Firstly, when the machine is turned off it displays the time. However, almost every morning I wake up to find that it has turned itself on in the middle of the night and gotten itself into a mode where it now says "Menu". I then have to hit the power button to get it to turn off properly and to display the time again. Not such a big deal, but a minor annoyance.
The bigger deal (which I just discovered a couple of days ago) was that I had to manually change the time for daylight savings time and after I did so my scheduled recordings got screwed up (they are no longer recording properly... one show didn't even record at all... I had to manually hit the record button in order to get it to record), and then I noticed that a day or two after I changed the date and time it automatically reset itself to a random date and time.
Anyway, I am having a lot of bizarre problems with it. I don't know if it is because it is "remanufactured" or if they are all quirky like mine, but I don't think that I would recommend this to anyone. Unless you want to buy it because it's inexpensive and hope for the best that yours won't suffer from the same problems as mine, I would recommend spending a little more money and buying something of a higher quality.

Upscaling recorder with tuner - Perfect!.......2007-06-28
The picture is wonderful. The features are terrific. The ease of use is astounding. FYI - I'm a James Bond fan and own a few titles. One of the movie channels had a Bond-a-thon a few days ago, so I decided to put my Philips DVD recorder to the test. I recorded one of the titles that I already own from the movie channel broadcast to my DVR. The next day, I recorded the movie from my DVR to a DVD. I then had my family watch the first 10 minutes from each movie on one of our other DVD players and, based upon picture, sound quality, etc., tell me which one they thought was the store bought version and which one was the recorded version. My wife and all three kids picked my recording over the store bought version of the movie. Truly remarkable. The primary reason that I bought the recorder is to build upon our DVD collection without having to fork over the big $ to buy the movies from the store (the HDMI connection and upconverting were icing on the cake). At $180 for the recorder and about $1 per blank DVD disc, the thing is going to pay for itself with 10 recordings and then it's all gravy from there. Also, I travel a lot and have about 80 hours of programming on my DVR that I never seem to have enough time to watch. Now I'll be able to burn those programs to a DVD and watch them on my laptop when I'm on the road! How awesome is that?!?!?!
Five stars for the Philips DVD recorder - no doubt. I had tried a few other DVD recorders before I found this one (including a tunerless Philips) - for most, I had paid more and received less. For those of you with complex audio/video setups, beware of DVD recorders that don't have a built in tuner. I don't need the tuner for OTA broadcasts, I need it to make my A/V life hassle free. I'm sure glad that I found this baby...
Phillips "Best Picture" Award.......2007-05-25
The Phillips DVDR3505/37 has the best "digital tuner" picture quality out of the two other DVD recorders that I have tested with "digital tuners" (Panasonic and Samsung). The Phillips DVDR3505 produces an amazingly clear OTA digital picture on my old 27 inch Sanyo analog "box" TV using an indoor antenna. The Phillips 3505 and the 27inch TV are connected with regular "composite cables". The resulting OTA digital picture is amazingly detailed and clear with little or no annoying "dot crawl". Another important feature for me in selecting the Phillips DVDR3505 is that it allows you to choose "4.3 pan & Scan" to view OTA digital programs in full screen on a "box" TV (no black bars caused by "HD" OTA programs). In the 4.3 pan & scan mode the OTA digital picture is shown in full screen but is not distorted looking (no long and stretched faces) and the picture framing matches the full screen picture seen on my analog OTA TV in a side by side comparison. In addition the picture clarity/sharpness in the "4.3 pan & scan" full screen mode is superb! The same effect should be achieved when watching a purchased or rented "widescreen" DVD movie on your "Box" TV in the 4.3 pan & scan mode. The cons for the Phillips DVDR3505 are its slow channel change and slow recording set up. One additional problem I have experienced is that the unit looses its channel set up under certian conditions. At this point in my life, the quality of the picture that you see from your cable, Sat, or OTA programs is what is most important to me and my family when watching TV. The truth is that I have put up with poor reception using analog TV with "rabbit ears" antennas long enough, so the amazing picture quality of the Phillips is what sold me. The Phillips DVDR3502 wins hand down in that category and is the main reason that I sent the other more expensive feature rich DVD recorders back to the store. My family and I have been able to work around or forgive all of the "cons" reported about for the Phillips DVDR3505 and because we are basic users the Phillips meets our needs for recording OTA TV programs while providing a "Wow factor" in picture clarity when watching "real time" OTA digital TV through our analog "box" TV. Also, a "Wow factor" is achieved even when watching OTA digital program recorded on DVD using the Phillips DVDR3505. Image reproduction is excellent in two highest image recording modes. Before buying see if the features on the Phillips DVDR3505/37 matches your basic needs. If viewing pleasure has been lacking for OTA broadcasts then get ready to receive the "Best Picture" award from friends and family when using the Phillips DVDR3505.

Florida.......2007-06-10
I purchased this unit a few days ago at Walmart for about three-hundred dollars plus tax (regular price) -- still cheaper than Amazon. So far, I love it. You can record from the DVD to the Hard Dive and from the Hard Drive to a DVD. Of course, you can't record a copyrighted protected DVD. You can play and record to DVD-R/+R or DVD-RW/+RW, and you can play a CD. You can't play or record to DVD-RAM, but since none of my other DVD players play DVD-RAM, that's okay. There is no TV-guide as it programs just like VCR, but from what I have heard, although a TV guide would be nice, the TV guides on other units have too many problems. On the downside, it's not easy to add a title.
This is my first DVD Recorder, and I definitely wanted a Hard Drive for flexibility. Some items are bit complex, so you need to read the manual which appears to be well written. I have not had any problems with the Hard Drive locking-up like I have heard about other DVD Recorders with Hard Drives. I have not tested everything, but at this point, although it's not perfect, I am happy with my purchase.
Great unit for a simple person like me........2007-06-09
Wow!!! This is my first dvd recorder and I am very pleased. I wanted to replace my VCR and so far, this has done the job and some.
I dont have cable, (dont watch enough tv to pay 48.00 per month, okay, hell, i'm cheap, lol) so the clarity of my signal was dependent on the weather. Well, this unit has a digital tuner which is crystal clear, and I gained an additonal 3 staions to go with the 8 I already have.
With the harddrive I can record up to 200 hrs worth of video, tv etc. in slp. (I use sp which gives my 66 hrs of very good video).
I can time shift up to 36 events over 1 month. The nice thing is when you go to the index menu, (a video listing of saved video) you can see what you recorded in these active windows.
You can record from the dvd to the harddrive and vice versa. (you cant record 1 time or copy write protected dvds to the harddrive).
If you are watching tv through the unit you can pause live tv, this is nice, very nice.
I've only had the unit for a week so i'm still learning about the unit, and by this being my first dvd recorder I may not be looking for things I have read others are looking for.
To sum up my first week with the unit, the unit has yet to lock up on me, I have recorded from dvd to harddrive and vice versa and it worked fine for me. Ive tried editing my recorded dvd, time consuming but i expected that.
Good quality, but still a few flaws........2007-06-07
You know how you buy a product, and it doesn't have all the features you need? Well, this is another one of those. I've never understood why manufacturers sell products without all the features - I guess they need their customers to upgrade every now and then, huh?
I currently have a Panasonic DMR-E80H (80GB hard drive) that has worked flawlessly and is still kickin today. The time had come for me to buy another DVD Recorder. After TONS of research, I bought a RCA DRC8000N. This one was ok, good interface, cheap (200.00), but the tuner quality wasn't all that great - it had little wavy lines on my local channels (through analog cable signal straight from outside line). The remote control for the RCA wasn't responsive either - it took a second for each command to go through. So I exchanged it for the Polaroid DRA-01601A (260.00). This one had a little better picture quality (except through 1 of my channels which was extremely noisy), so I immediately returned it. Finally, my local Wally store had the Philips DVD3575H in stock and I picked one up for 300.00.
Pros:
The tuner quality is very good - I have analog cable, and my 65" tv shows little noise with it. The tuner is even better than my Panasonic one.
The remote is responsive and pretty well laid out - I don't like the black play/pause/rew/ff buttons though - I keep wanting to hit the button just above them so I still have to hunt.
You can play a recorded event while recording another one. You can play the one that you're currently recording too (ie: chase play).
It has SDTV tuner.
It's quiet when running - I honestly couldn't hear it from my couch.
It has a skip function that allows you to skip ahead 30 seconds when you're watching a recorded program. The 30 seconds is changeable to 60, 2 minutes, etc.
It has 3 fast forward and 3 reverse speed settings.
You can have up to 6 markers to mark a spot of a recorded program and you can jump to it (helpful if you have to stop watching a program and you lose the "resume" function of it by turning off the device). My Panasonic one will hold up to 99 and are used as chapters instead of "markers". I'll still call this a pro as many recorders don't even know what a marker is.
It will auto-chapter every 5 minutes (this is an option as well to change it to 10 minutes, etc.)
The Info bar (display bar at the top of the screen) is well thought out. It shows information as to what you are playing and where you are at in the program (ie: 27:35 of 1:03:00). From the Info bar, you can change closed captions, repeat options, fake surround sound settings, noise reduction settings, set markers, change to another chapter, change to another recorded program. This makes it simple for some tedious functions.
Cons:
Unfortunately, yes there are always cons.
1. You can't title a timer event until after it's done recording. Why? I have no clue. Basically, if you record 10 programs per week, it'll be difficult to remember what each of them are. They are labeled like this: Day, Time, Channel, Recording Quality. This is not helpful at all to me.
2. If you do actually want to go edit the name after it has recorded, you have to enter it like you're on a cell phone. You have to press the number 2 three times to get the letter C. Then you have to change it to lowercase letters, then repeat over and over. That's just stupid.
3. If you have a weekly timed event, you don't have the option to overwrite the previous week's program. My Panasonic gives this option, which is very helpful. With the Philips, I have to remember to delete the programs before the hard drive fills up. With my Panasonic, I just let it overwrite and no worries.
4. No TV Guide? I don't know if this is a real con because from reviews I've read on other DVRs that have it, it's a crap shoot whether it works or not.
5. There's an annoying bright blue light when this thing is recording. I'll just have to cover it up with some tape.
If you have the money to spend - go buy a Panasonic (at around 450.00).
If you don't, then this is an excellent alternative (at around 300.00).
I'd stay away from the cheap ones, because that's what they are.
I can't comment on the DVD playing/recording abilities of this thing as I'll still use my reliable Panasonic for those functions.
I'll probably keep this one unless something goes really wrong over the next few days. I am extremely tired of researching DVD Recorders. I almost went and bought an old TIVO with the Basic Service so I wouldn't have the monthly fees. But I hate buying used equipment - especially off of eBay.
