Enjoy movies and music to the max with Toshiba's SD-2815 five-disc DVD player. ColorStream component-video outputs (for use with compatible TVs) virtually eliminate NTSC artifacts like video noise and dot crawl, while built-in MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) decoding gives the freedom to compile music on a PC and listen to it on your stereo or TV.

Component-video splits the video signal into three separate components, which reduces the amount of signal processing required of a television. Conventional composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television. The "expanded" mode in the player's black-level setting produces richer, deeper black tones in every image. Using parallel video output you can connect each of the player's outputs to a different TV and watch simultaneous images from each connected set, making it ideal for multi-room use.

The player offers full menu navigation via the front-panel controls so you can operate the player even when the remote has been misplaced or is unavailable. The SD-2815 also lets you place up to nine digital "bookmarks" to save favorite locations or scenes on the currently loaded discs. The bookmarks provide quick access to scenes you want to watch again or show to friends.

In the audio realm, two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The player's internal digital-to-analog converters work at 24-bit, 96 kHz resolution to ensure high quality reproduction from a range of program material. Playback options include picture zoom, dialogue enhancement, 3-D Virtual Surround Sound (simulated surround for two-channel listening), and parental lock.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this product!!.......2003-09-02

This player stopped working after 4 months (one month over warranty). The changer threw all the CD's out and jammed the unit. The door wouldn't open. It was a total disaster.

4 out of 5 stars Pleased with my new purchase!.......2003-08-12

I recently purchased the Toshiba, and find it to be easy to use, the cd options are great. I love being able to play 2 songs from each disc until the discs are completed. What a fun option. I have had a toshiba phone for years, and hope the DVD player will work the same.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome sound!.......2003-08-11

Unlike some of the other reviewers, mine worked flawlessly out of the box. It has some great audio options, and after I hooked up the optical cable for audio, I saw lights turn on on my amplifier that I didn't know existed. The zoom feature is nice for viewing things in the background for concerts, etc. I would recommend it strongly, however, make sure you measure your TV cabinet, as it it bigger than a single disc style, and it sticks out past my entertainment center shelf, which sort of bugs me. Overall, it is a nice product.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Toshiba Customer Service.......2003-07-29

It was a shame that I had to return this player, I really liked it, but it had a glitch playing DVDs with seamless branching. The playback stuttered with 2 different copies of Terminator 2: UE and The Abyss: SE.

I first discovered the problem when trying to watch T2. When I called Toshiba customer service, they first insisted it was the disc, even though I told them it played fine in my other 5 year old *Toshiba* player, and my XBox. They asked if I could try a different copy of T2:UE, so I tried my father-in-law's copy of T2:UE, and it too stuttered. Then I realized these movies use seamless branching, so I tried the Abyss, and it also stuttered on playback, even froze at some points.

After reporting all this to Toshiba when I called them back, all they did was take my info and said they'd get back to me. 2 weeks later, and I still haven't heard from them. Since they didn't make me feel comfortable about getting the problem fixed under warranty, I'm glad I went ahead and just returned the player right before my 30 day return period ended.

1 out of 5 stars Broken out of the box.......2003-07-10

Unpacked this player, hooked it up, loaded a DVD, and immediately received a "Disc Error" message on the display. No matter what kind of disk I loaded, CD-R, music CD, DVD, got the same message. Also, the carousel would spin endlessly once I ejected the disks. Talked to Toshiba customer service, and they were of no help, just suggested I bring it in to an authorized service center. I've found that to be their standard answer for everything, unfortunately.

This is my second bad experience with a Toshiba DVD player. A single disk player I bought stopped working at 13 months (1 month out of warranty) which is why I bought this one. I was going to chalk it up to an isolated case, but with the performance of this new one, I'm thinking it is not that isolated. Will be buying another brand now.
