Toshiba SD-9000 DVD Player
Product Description
Amazon.com Review
Heralding the arrival of Toshiba's Cinema Series is the company's new flagship SD-9000 DVD player. Solidly built and rigged with a panoply of the latest audio-video technologies, the SD-9000 is one of the most flexible high-performance DVD players around.
With respect to AV outputs, the SD-9000 is remarkably similar to its immediate underling, Toshiba's SD-3109. Dolby Digital, DTS, coaxial, Toslink, six-channel and two-channel analog--you name it, this puppy plays it, with the notable exception of High-Definition Compatible Digital (HDCD), a format accommodated by the more affordable SD-3109. That said, the SD-9000 offers a few things you won't find in the junior player, such as bookmarks, a universal remote control, a jog dial, Custom Picture Setting, and a sturdier build that more than doubles the weight of the SD-3109. With the SD-9000's bookmark feature, you can recall the location of a single key point in three in your favorite programs, even when the disks themselves are on the shelf. The supplied remote control can be programmed to operate televisions and cable boxes from nearly 50 manufacturers, while a jog dial mounted in the center of the remote greatly simplifies multi-speed playback.
Moving beyond the power of Toshiba's Black Level Expander circuitry, the SD-9000 allows you to tailor the picture to your tastes through Custom Picture Setting, with which you can adjust--and store--three separate configurations with regard to contrast, brightness, color, tint, and sharpness. (Use of this feature presumes knowledge of video standards.)
Audiophiles looking to explore HDCD might do well to investigate the SD-3109, but for video tailoring and general home-theater convenience, the SD-9000's your unit.
Pros:
Flexible audio and video outputs
Extensive features
Sturdy quality
Cons:
Does not decode HDCD
