Amazon.com Review
RCA's RC5220P DVD-video player is everything you'd want in a basic, budget model: a slim, lightweight player with extensive features at a good price. The RC5220P's S-video and composite-video outputs, well served by the player's state-of-the-art 10-bit digital video converters, deliver a clear, sharp image. This feature is excellent for a sub-$300 DVD player.

In the audio realm, we found the RC5220P to sound as good as other players in its price range, with an above-average-sounding headphone jack. The player outputs both Dolby Digital and DTS surround-sound formats through a single, switchable Toslink optical connection. Because the Toslink is an optical connector, you need to make sure that your surround receiver or processor accepts optical inputs rather than the standard coaxial inputs. Some of the higher-end audio options that you forego by purchasing this lower-priced model are six-channel analog audio outputs and a more common digital connection type in a dedicated coaxial (rather than Toslink) output.

Connection issues aside, the player offers a host of minor features that together help chisel "bargain" right across the RC5220P's name. Among these are parental lock-out, bookmarking, and RF-adapter capability. With parental lock-out, you can code the RC5220P to play no discs at all or only discs bearing certain user-determined ratings. Using bookmarks, the player can instantly recall up to 10 favorite moments within a DVD or CD. (Bookmarks clear when you remove the disc.) Finally, the RF adapter permits you to use the RC5220P with older televisions that may not have S-Video or composite-video inputs.

Setup was quick and simple, taking only minutes from cracking open the box to enjoying a movie or CD. Programming was a breeze; the only primary programming feature not obvious from the get-go was the track-skip feature on the supplied remote control. But the clear, well-written manual clarified this. For dollar-conscious AV enthusiasts, you can't do much better.

4 out of 5 stars RCA DRC 8295 DVD+R/RW Recorder with VCR.......2007-04-13

This recorder is quite a workhorse. I bought one in Walmart in May of 2005 and have transferred hundreds of videos to DVD with it. While it now occassionally hangs up due to the high usage I have put it through as well as its age-overall it still is a solid machine. The one minor problem the machine seems to have is that it messes up on R disks on a regular basis but only occassionally does it mess up on RW which you can simply erase and reuse. So I now only use RW disks with the machine and thus have very few problems! The main feature I like with the unit which I have not been able to find on other combination vcr-dvd recorders is the ability to "edit" RW disks. The particular neat feature about this machine is that( if you record programs off the air or have videos which have commercials already on the tape) you can "HIDE" the commercials upon playback. In other words once the disk has been "edited" and you play it back you can choose to either watch it with the commercials viewable or watch the disk with the commercials not viewable (ie hidden). It is quite a neat feature.

I wish other recorders out there had this particular feature.

5 out of 5 stars I love this DVD player.......2002-08-03

I bought a RCA 5220P DVD player last year. It has been working great since bought. Every one in my family loves it. When my relatives and my friends came to my house and they watched and listened DVDs and CDs with my DVD player, they said that it worked perfectly, and many of them also bought this model.

1 out of 5 stars Should have known better.......2002-07-31

I got this player because I have an RCA TV that only has a coaxial cable input and a stereo that would only handle virtual surround. Since I'd only had the TV for a year, I wasn't going to buy a new one to accomodate a DVD player, so I settled for a basic unit (the RC5220P) with a converter for "digital" movie enjoyment. The 4:3 display has never been good. Image quality has been tolerable. After a brief 2 years of service, the video card just quit and service will cost at least half as much as a new player. Hmmm...wonder if I should get a new RCA player?

1 out of 5 stars worst product ever.......2002-06-13

I purchased this product last year for my husbands birthday and we have had nothing but trouble ever since. When we first set it up we used it a couple of times and it stopped working. My husband had to send it back to RCA to get it replaced at least twice before he complained that he didn't think it was packaged properly. It finally came packaged properly and worked, for about 6 months. 2 weeks ago it completely stopped in the middle of a movie and hasn't worked since. You've got to be kidding me.
This is the biggest waste of money and time ever!! It's a total disgrace.

3 out of 5 stars Worked great for 2 years.......2002-03-24

This dvd player was more affordable than most at the time, so we bought it. It has been reliable and served us well. Now, 2 years into it, we are having serious skipping problems and freezing problems. It has always run a bit of a temperature, as discs are very warm to the touch when removing them from the unit. CD's only work if they are factory burned (not CD-R), and come out of the unit rather warm as well. Good entry level unit, recommend getting a killer warranty plan along with it and also getting for a great markdown price!!

3 out of 5 stars Uhhh... It was kinda worth the money.......2002-01-02

I bought this DVD player a few years ago. It usually works, but can be finicky about whether it will work or not. Occasionally, it gave a NODISK error, but I think this was due to heating or the player not being level, because I moved it, and it seems to work all the time now.

The menu is a bit cludgy compared to "modern" DVD players, and switching to using captions still bewilders me from time to time.

Overall, when it works, its a nice DVD player, ... (better than videotape, at least). It works with DVDR, which is pleasing!
