Amazon.com Product Description
The future is here. CD recording, once only a dream twinkling in the eyes of audiocassette buffs, is now commonplace. Likewise, VCR lovers can now rejoice at the advent of DVD recording--a consumer reality for more than a year, but only a remotely affordable one since the advent of Panasonic's DMR-E10 DVD-RAM recorder-player.

The unit encodes and stores video information in the MPEG2 encoding format using hybrid VBR (Variable Bit Rate), which ensures superb picture quality by merging two earlier encoding technologies: Real Time VBR and Visibility Modulation Technology.

What it means for you is cool features like video noise reduction for actually improving upon the images coming off your VHS tapes. You get three record modes: XP (60 min.), SP (120 min.), and LP (240 min.); recording quality diminishes slightly as compression levels rise with the longer record times. Chapter search eliminates blind, tedious tape scanning.

If you're playing a finished recording, Direct Navigator lets you find a desired program quickly, and even if you're playing a disc in progress, the DMR-E10 will find blank recording space in a snap and play your most recent recording immediately.

The DMR-E10 functions as a full-featured DVD player, as well, with high-end progressive-scan video outputs and Dolby Digital and DTS surround-sound output (for use with a surround-decoding receiver) and Dolby Digital decoding (for use with a receiver with 5.1-channel analog inputs).

Progressive scanning (480P) output renders seamless, true-to-film picture playback of DVD movie discs (from discs with 24-frame-rate film source material), and virtual-battery operation uses an internal rechargeable battery to power the DMR-E10 during use, eliminating video- and audio-degrading AC power "noise" and recharging itself after hours.

A headphone jack is a welcome touch, and V.S.S. virtual surround provides enveloping sound even through headphones. Advanced V.S.S. also delivers a remarkable surround-sound effect while using only your front two speakers.

Chapter search helps you refresh your memory when you have only watched part of a movie and are viewing it again at a later time, and high-speed smooth-motion scan allows crystal-clear scan quality while locating desired locations on a disc.

Other features include a backlit universal remote control, a jog/shuttle dial, timer recording with VCR Plus+, five-year clock backup, one-touch recording, and compatibility with video CDs.

Two potential drawbacks to note: 1) the unit is not designed to play CD-R or CD-RW discs, whether audio- or MP3-encoded; and 2) the machine compresses all audio recordings with Dolby Digital 2.0 (which is MP3-like in nature). CD-quality PCM audio recording is not possible on this unit. You do get an audio meter, however, to help you maximize the bits allotted.

Video recording and home-theater-quality DVD playback are the priorities here, and that's where this piece excels.

1 out of 5 stars don't advetrise what you don't have.......2002-11-27

WHERE ARE THEY???????????

4 out of 5 stars Truly a great machine!.......2002-07-17

The invention of a DVD recorder has been long in coming (in a price range that's affordable) Set up was a breeze. I had it up and recording in less time than it took me to get my VCR working. I have recorded from tv and from VHS tape and it seems that the recorded DVD is better! The DVD Ram disks are re-recordable, so you can use them over and over. The only drawback is you need a DVD Ram player to play the recorded DVD's. If sharing your DVD's was a priority, the Panasonic DMR-E20 records DVD-R and DVD Ram formats. Some newer DVD Players play the DVD-R format. In any case, the Panasonic DMR-E10 is a great machine and the price is unbeatable from Amazon.com.

4 out of 5 stars Panasonic DMR-E10 DVD Ram Recorder.......2002-07-17

I would have given this recorder 5 stars if it would record DVD-R's also. I bought this unit as a second to my Panasonic DMR-E20. Its perfect for a second machine for doing Ram Discs back and forth, or play a Ram Disc to record on a DVD-R on the DMR-E20. What I really liked about this deck more was the 5.1 DD Built in Decoder, I ran the 5.1 DD decorder into my 6 channel non DD THX AMP and now running DVD movies as 5.1 THX Dolby Digital is fantastic. The quality in the XP is perfect, can not tell the difference from the Ram copy and the original Source. The 2 hour mode is very very close to the original, the 4 hr mode should strictly be used for time shifhting TV programs only.
Comparing the DMR-E10 to the DMR-E20 the E20 wins every so slightly, picture quality is just a smidge better, but then again the E20 is [$$$] while the E10 is only [$$$].
One hidden fact, the HQ setting for audio is highly recomended over the normal setting for audio driven copies like high action movies or music videos.
Interesting Fact, format Ram discs in the E10 you get 7 minutes extra per hour on the disc over the E20, example: a 4.7 Ram disc formated for 2 hrs is 2 hrs on the E20 while the E10 gives you 2hrs 14min. Using this unit is just like using a VCR with alot more flexability. One point should be taken editing on this deck gives you anywhere from 1/2 second to 1 second pause between edits and no time slip fuction either with Ram Discs.
Recomend reading the owners manual all the way through, there are a large amount of Manual adjustments not known unless you read the owners manual 1st, you can really fine tune your video and audio with those adjustments.

1 out of 5 stars bad move, i'm sending it back. READ THIS BEFORE BUYING........2002-07-11

I didn't read the previous reviews carefully enough. DVD's recorded on this unit can only be played back on this unit. I bought it so I could record DVD's and watch them elsewhere. Since I can't do that, I am sending the unit back. It is too bad that this feature--or lack of feature--wasn't mentioned in the item's description. That would have saved me considerable time and trouble.

5 out of 5 stars It is just what I needed! Wonderful build quality!!!.......2002-06-28

I know,I know. This Beauty is DVD-RAM only. But for me this is just fine for now! I need to archive family videos and vintage movies/VHS etc...This Jewel has Wonderful build quality and is originally a $4,000.00 unit (a bit overpriced) It will replace my CD player, and my DVD player and it also has Progressive scan.
This Panasonic has played everything I have thrown at it:DVD, VCD, DVD-RAM,CD. And the Video and Audio quality is Very High End all the way!
To me this unit is a Steal! (At Amazons price) I will archive my treasures and wait for the DVD media wars to settle down, and then when the the prices of the recorders come way down, and they will,I will buy the appropriate unit to transfer my archived treasures to.
BTW,This beauty records on the two sided 9.4 Ram discs as well as the 4.7 single sided, both type 1 and 2! Excellent quality recordings!!!
This unit is the best and most exciting piece of electronics I have purchased in a long time!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
