Samsung DVD-P421 Progressive-Scan DVD Player

Samsung DVD-P421 Progressive-Scan DVD Player

Product Description
From the Manufacturer
Samsung's affordably priced DVD-P421 DVD-Video player features state-of-the-art progressive-scan component-video outputs; an elegant, titanium-finished front panel; built-in MP3 decoding; and a dual-laser pickup for compatibility with not only DVDs and CDs, but CD-Rs and CD-RWs as well.

Video features
Topping this amazing player's features is its ability to perform true 3:2 pulldown through its component-video outputs, a videophile feature.

What is 3:2 pulldown? Some context: while movie film runs at 24 frames per second (fps), NTSC television signals run at 30 fps, requiring film's 24 frames to be adapted to 30 frames before you can watch movies on standard (U.S.) television. The solution developed by the video industry exploits the fact that the NTSC format uses two "fields" per frame of video.

During the film-to-tape transfer, the telecine engineer mixes alternating sets of three and two video fields. The first frame of a second's worth of film is placed on three fields of video; the next frame is placed on two fields; and so on, until all 60 fields of a single frame of a 30 fps signal are complete--resulting in a gentle "stretching" of the original 24 frames.

While difficult to detect, this stretching is technically a distortion, and 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects the distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture on your component-video-equipped direct-view or projection TV or monitor.

The progressive-scan feature displays all 480 video lines in one pass to provide high vertical resolution and flicker-free, high-density images. A feature called Screen Fit lets you inform the player of the appropriate aspect ratio of your TV or monitor (whether standard 4:3 or widescreen 16:9).

The unit also offers standard component outputs and S-video outputs, and a 10-bit video digital-to-analog converter ensures precision playback of high-resolution DVD signals.

Audio Features
In the audio realm, the DVD-P421's phantom surround circuit simulates surround sound through your TV or stereo speakers, while its 96 kHz/24-bit audio converters deliver pristine audio quality from DVDs and CDs. The back-panel Toslink optical and RCA coaxial terminals each pass a 96 kHz/24-bit audio stream for use with the latest high-end audio recordings (though be aware that your receiver must be able to decode your 96 kHz recordings if you use a digital connection there; otherwise, listen through the unit's stereo analog outputs).

The player's .25-inch stereo headphone output offers a convenient rotary volume control for optimal listening in private, and a 2x audio playback feature delivers clear, double-time sound for accurate audio cueing of your favorite scenes.

Connections
The DVD-P421 includes three sets of left/right analog-audio outputs for compatibility with stereo Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. This unit also supports both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel formats through its digital-audio outputs (one each of coaxial and optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

The back panel offers one output each for composite-video, S-video, and top-of-the-line component-video.

Other Features
The player's advanced navigation system offers additional flexibility in accessing DVD content, while motion zoom grants high magnification of selected screen areas without distortion and during real-time playback. Chapter digest generates thumbnail representative scene images, simplifying scene selection, and the included universal remote control (with one-touch joystick) operates the DVD-P421 as well as most TVs and VCRs.

Supplied accessories include a composite-video AV cable, instruction manual, remote control, and four AA batteries.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great cheap player.......2006-10-22

I've owned this player for 4+ years. I average 1 DVD a week and have been using this DVD player for the last 4 years regularly. It hasn't broken down nor given us any problems.

I'll be purchasing more Samsung products in the future. If only all other brands were this steady and reliable.

2 out of 5 stars Good for a while.......2004-07-18

Have had the Samsung P421 for about a year an a half. 10 months into ownership it began pausing occasionally and randomly in the middle of a DVD, then either skipping or stopping entirely with the "Disc will not play message." Initially I attributed this to to a disc that was dirty or damaged, but when cleaning a disc didn't help and it did it as well with clean DVDs that played satisfactorily on other players, I realized the player was at fault. As time has gone on it's gotten worse, and now it displays this problem on at least 70% of the DVDs played and refuses to play through about 15% of the DVDs. Much too unreliable or short-lived to recommend. Too bad, because a number of its features are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly fine........2003-12-15

I have had my dvd player coming up 2 years now and I can successfuly say I must have gotten one of the non factory rejects. Mine has never given me trouble. Not once. It has played photo dvd's and audio, plus my dvd's perfect. There is no weird red line or blue bar like some have reviewed to say. The remotes dont annoy me either. I find the remote quite cool to be honest. I meen I am only 17 years old for crying out loud. I dont need a big fancy thing to make me happy. Samsung has satisfied my family in the past and my dvd player is great. I got it for christmas. I can say that compared to some of my friends, this one is the best one. My one friend has a panasonic brand, and it sucks. I can say that I am lucky to have this one. It loads my dvd's in less then 10 seconds literally. Its a perfect model for myself. I think some people who are un happy with it must have gotten bad models. Mine is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect operation for nearly a year.......2003-11-21

infrequently stops with dirty rental dvd, flawless operation with personal dvd's, most rentals for nearly a year. My first dvd, so I have nothing to compare it with, but at discount price, I have no complaints. Every brand has lemons, low raters must of gotten one.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth buying.......2003-04-19

At first glance, this DVD Player was a plus. It even had Duel Laser pickup, which virtually eliminates that stupid pause between layers on Duel Layer DVDs.

However, I found the picture and playability of the disc to be unsatisfactory. I hooked it up using the component video outputs, and I would occasionally get a highly noticable blue line at the top of the screen, and an occassional red wiggly afterglow on some text that appeared during certain films. And the picture would be a little jumpy - occasionally.
Also, sometimes the player wouldn't play a disc. I'd have to take the disc out of the player, and put it back in for it to play. It was a perfectly fine disc that played on my previous DVD player.

Overall, this player had potential, but failed.
