The DV-981HD is the latest incarnation in Oppo's highly aclaimed line of upconverting DVD players. It offers an HDMI interface (HDMI Specification 1.1), with HD upconversion ouput resolutions of 720p, 1080i, and full 1080p. This is Oppo's most full-featured player yet, and as such, it's not a DVD player for people with regular analogue sets. While the DV-981HD doesn't offer component output, and doesn't output standard or native resolution, it does represent one of the best (if not the best) upconverting DVD players out there, and it's perfect for people with HDTVs up to full 1080p who aren't ready to jump on the HD DVD or Blu-ray bandwagen. In addition to excellent upconversion, the DV-981HD offers playback of a whole host of formats including DVD-Audio, Super Audio CS (SACD), Audio CDs, HDCD, WMA, Kodak Picture CDs, all version of DivX including DivX6, as well as Xvid, .SRT, .SMI, .IDX, and .SUB file formats.

Audio Features
The DV-981HD outputs audio in stereo or in 5.1 channel surround, either via HDMI, or through the included 5.1 analogue outputs. Other connections include S-Video out, and digital coaxial and optical audio outs. It features 24-bit, 192 kHz high resolution audio D/A converters, supports virtual surround in six settings, and has built-in equalizer, channel trim, and channel delay functions.

Farudgja DCDi Technology
Rather than trying to build their own upconversion technology for this machine, the Oppo DV-981HD the DCDi Faruja technology from Genesis Microchips. In addition to upscaling a DVD's native 720x480 interlaced video to 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, Farudja technology also detects content that has gone through 3:2 pull down to convert film content to NTSC for video, and recreates the original frames by blending the fields back together. It then processes for any edit mistakes and reconstrucs an accurate signal, producing an image free of motion artifacts. The unique DCDi algorithm can also identify moving edges within an image and adjust interpolation at a pixel level to create smooth edges for on-screen objects, eliminating the jaggy edges that commonly result from other upconversion techniques. Farudja processing also uses a proprietary "TruLife Enhancement" technology to identify transitions in the image considered to be details such as skin texture, freckles or hair, and enhance those to bring more detail in an image to life on the screen. This approach avoids image artefacts common with the peaking filter approach used by other systems for detail enhancement. The Farudja system uses temporal filtering for noise reduction, and can achieve 6 to 10 dB of Noise reduction without introducing artefacts or losing sharpness in the image.

Connections:

Compared with Other Oppo DVD player models
At the time of this writing, Oppo also has the DV-970HD upconverting player, and their original OPD971H model. Of these three models, the DV-981HD is the only that upconverts to full 1080p, the other models offer upconversion to 720p or 1080i only. Both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD offer Super Audio CD (SACD) playback, the OPDV971H does not. The other major difference to consider is that the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H both use Farudja processing for video upconversion. The DV-970HD uses a different upconversion system that may not be as full featured as the Farudja. For this reason Oppo recommends the DV-981HD, or the OPDV971H for use with larger screen HDTVs 50 inches or greater, while the DV-970HD is only recommended for HDTVs smaller than 50-inches. Oppo recommends the DV-970HD for use with external video processors or scalers, and suggests careful calibration of both the DV-981HD and the OPDV971H when used with DLP HDTVs. Both of these players are good for use with DLP HDTVs, but for the best picture, some setup time is required. For disply with a DVI input on your HDTV, an HDMI-DVI adapter is required with both the DV-981HD and the DV-970HD models.

Our DVDs look flawless with this player (we view on a Sharp Aquos 42"), and the all region option is great. My old DVD player would play PAL, but not all regions. The pictue is amazing (Fassbinder's "Lola" with it's Douglas Sirk-ian colors is stunning). Definitely glad I bought this! The missing star is for the oft-mentioned flimsy disc tray. Hopefully Oppo will address this issue with future models.

I bought this unit so I could up-convert my standard DVD's to 1080P because I bought a 1080P television. The video quality on this unit was great, but there were some things they could improve. I did not like the remote, it seemed very cheap, and I could not find the code so I could program one of my other remotes to control the unit. I could not find a code for Oppo in any of my other remote code lists. I also thought the DVD tray was very cheap looking and I was afraid I would break it. If you can live with the remote and the DVD tray, picture quality was very good.

I ended up returning it and bought the Panasonic DMR-EZ47V combination VCR/DVD recorder which up-converts standard DVD's to 1080P. I really like the Panasonic, and the picture quality is just as good as the Oppo in my opinion.

I found this brand (OPPO) while searching the net - had never heard of it before. I have DVD's from Europe and needed something to play them with that didn't demand complex changing of settings each time. This is a GEM! You put in a DVD and the player automatically recognizes the format, and the "up converter" increases the definition and quality of the image....I couldn't be happier!! Wonderful little machine! To top it off, the price is more than reasonable. If you're a cinephile like myself and want to buy and play foreign films (oftentimes much cheaper in the original format - just go to the auction site in that country/language), grab this one!

This is an excellent upscaling player for the money and has such a clean picture compared to my old progressive scan DVD player I had before. Oppo has some great players and I would look forward to purchasing more from their product lines in the future. I'm playing this through a 47" 1080p LCD and with a little picture tweaking on my screen, the picture quality really makes my regular DVD's look noticibly better.

I have six DVD players,three upconverting,all major brands. This is the only one that my friends see the difference at once. The older the DVD the greater the difference. I won't go into the technical reasons but there is a reason it cost more. The customer service is outstanding, a human answers on the first or second ring and they know more than I do.I wish they made more than DVD's Great equipment. I have samsung,sony,panasonic walmart,and KLH.

Everyone is choosing sides in the format war, but not me, I have both a Blu-ray player and this HD DVD player. They are both great, but if I had to choose one, it would certainly be the HD DVD format and here's why:

The HD DVD standard requires players to have a network connection and 2 video processors. On Blu-ray, these are optional. This means that HD DVD is going to get fantastic picture-in-picture extras and downloadable content with certain movies. Warner Brothers just announced that their new movie `300' will have exclusive features on HD DVD that they just couldn't do on the Blu-ray release, including: an interactive game, the ability to mix scenes and share with friends over the web, picture in picture commentary and more.

More about this player: It was easy to setup, the manual was fantastic and very descriptive. It actually fits perfectly on my Comcast cable box (they are the same size) and it has feet so the heat can escape. The sound and picture quality are amazing (you knew that already). It's a little slow to boot up (like all next-gen movie machines) but once the movie starts, who cares if it took 10 extra seconds to load? I've done 2 firmware updates using the Ethernet port, they worked perfectly (took about 20 minutes, be patient!).

Again, as someone who owns both, my preference is HD DVD. I could not be happier with this purchase and will soon be purchasing another unit for a different room in the house. Heck, at this price, even if I only used it to up-convert my standard DVDs it would be worth it!

I have been watching both the Blu ray and the HD Dvd and refused to believe that I needed a $1000 player to get a good picture...and I was right. This dvd player is excellent...provided you get the right movie...may i suggest Serenity or Happy Feet at this time. The picture quality is as most critics have stated...amazing! I have a 2003 Hitachi 51 inch which has a DVI connection....if you have a DVI connection, amazon sells the HDMI to DVI cable...its better then the component hook up. Last, the price of $250 plus the five free dvds make the actual cost roughly, $150. One con..HD DVD movies run anywhere from 19.99 to $34.95.

I bought this machine for my dad so I can make home HD-DVD movies from my Canon HV20 using ordinary DVD4 and DVD9s to send to him. Works great and cheap! Don't expect it to be nearly as easy (if at all possible) with Blue-ray.

The DVD player was delivered very quickly. It was easy to install (HDMI to TV and optical audio to receiver) and configure. I was watching a DVD soon afterwards, even without a firmware update. I have only played a couple of HD-DVDs but they were completely awesome to see. I hear all the bickering about HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray and 1080p vs 1080i. Enough with the analysis paralysis. Stop whining and start watching!!! It's quite amazing to watch HD programming whether from DVD or broadcast. I'm glad to have purchased this 1080i player. I have a new Panasonic 58" 1080p (700U) plasma TV and I'm very satisfied with the way HD-DVD and SD-DVDs look on this combo.

Some day I will consider a 1080p DVD player, *IF* I can see a difference, and *IF* it plays multiple formats and *IF* the prices come down.

One thing missing from this player is the ability to play MP3 CDs. Hopefully this will come with a future firmware update.

Coating of Blu-ray discs has disc rot: mould-like spots

Now here is the bad news for Blu-ray, engadget is reporting about a potential problem with the disc media that is being described as disc rot.

Basically mould-like spots have formed and made several owner's Blu-ray discs unplayable this could be a big problem for Sony's Blu-ray format.

Many people are claiming they are discovering spots which can't be rubbed off on Blu-ray discs, we are not sure how widespread this problem is but it leaves you wondering how much damage this could cause the Blu-ray name.

I picked up my player today. I have another (hdmi) dvd player, but when I hooked it up to my Sony 46" LCD TV, I was really disappointed in how my dvds played on it. They were okay but not great. This player was on sale today so I bought i t and switched the 2 players. What a world of difference! The picture is much clearer and crisper. I am very impressed and extremely happy I bought the Sony. Until the HD war is over, I wanted a good player to watch dvds on on my new tv. The player is hooked up with a hdmi cable (that I payed about 12 bucks for and works great) and set to 720p (that is the resolution of my set) and I tested it out on a couple of movies (Pan's Labyrinth, X-Men 3, Casino Royale) and I noticed a big improvement over the other player in picture quality. I am extremely happy with my purchase. I also got the last one in the store!

THIS RECORDER IS ALL AS ADVERTISED AND MORE IT TRULY IS A LITTLE DYNAMO. IT REPLACED A FAR MORE EXPENSIVE PANASONIC THAT LASTED LESS THAN A YEAR BEFORE GOING BELLY UP. THIS RECORDER DOES ALL YOU WILL NEED TO DO AND SOME THINGS YOU WOULDN'T EXPECT IN A MACHINE AT THE PRICE. A BEST BUY AT TWICE THE PRICE.

If you have experience burning dvds on your computer, this will be a cinch. I've read previous reviews and I can definitely understand any frustration when it comes to electronics. The reason this DVD player will not "PAUSE" during recording is because you need to press "stop record" so that it can write what you've recorded to the disc. Once you hit "record" again, it will continue to record where you left off as long as it is NOT a re-writable disc. If you purchase dvd-rw discs then you can reformat the disc over and over to use. This dvd is a GREAT device if you know what you're doing. If you don't, there's always a son, nephew, grandson that can help. If they love being on the computer, they can help you with this. My husband and I work and play a lot on our PCs so we have just enough experience to enjoy this recorder. It truly is a lot easier to use than I thought. Not to mention you can skip chapters and view the title of the show simply by hitting "display" on the remote. I hope this review helps. Enjoy it!

It's burned everything I've thrown at it (VHS2DVD, DVR2DVD, DV camera2DVD). I've been able to play everything I've burned on other machines too. I've yet to see how it does with copyrighted stuff from other dvd and vhs players. It does a decent job of auto menu generation and scene detect.

A couple of whines are time to "LOAD" a blank disc, finalize the disc and inability to control my satellite box. Live recording is a manual process of setting the channel to play on the sat box and timer creation on the recorder. It's not a menu based sellect item and record from inside the satellite box. I may be able to get my satbox to do control the dvd recorder but haven't had time to figure it out yet.

Quality and interface is typical Sony, solid but nothing extraordinary.

I bought this DVD recorder mainly because it supported the double-layer discs, which enable you to record for over two hours at highest quality. It's a good companion product to my Tivo S3 hi-def unit. I can archive shows and movies I want to save directly to the Sony. Granted, everything is through the analog ports, but the quality is good 'nuf.

Like most of these machines, you do have to read the owner's manual to figure out all the ins and outs, but that's a small price to pay.

The only nitpick I have about this machine is the interface to title discs is rather cumbersome, but no biggie. The other concern is just how durable this machine will be. I've read other reviews that said it stopped functioning after several months. So we'll see.

Finally a portable DVD with a truly spectacular picture. This is the 5th different DVD portable I have purchased and up until now I was pretty dissapointed with the grainy pictures I was seeing. This little guy has a great picture. The operation is smooth. Included is everything you need for portable viewing and inside viewing. Sony does it again. I've only owned this for 1 month but it has played every home made DVD-R I have made and every movie without a glitch! The sound is alos quite good for a portable unit. Great purchase.

I edit my daughter's dvd's to remove the title screens so I can more easily play them for her in the car (she is three). This unit refuses to play the edited dvds. Otherwise the player seemed fine. I returned it and got the Coby 8 inch swivel screen player instead.

The player itself is quality. I really enjoy the pivoting screen angles and the quality of the screen image. The only downfall for this product is the loudness of the speakers. If you are wearing headphones the sound volume is perfect, but without headphones the loudness of the speakers is very poor.

I bought this unit for long trips for the kids and was impressed with the way the rotating screen would allow it to be placed in various positions in the car for viewing. Unfortionatly, the glossy screen of the Sony made it virtually impossible to watch in a vehicle, even with tinted windows. Even putting towels in the windows helped little. The kicker was the fact that the unit died during the first movie played. Screen just failed. I was worried about the base units connection to the screen with the rotating feature, and it appears my worries were justified. Returned it and bought the Toshiba 1900 instead. I am much happier with the slightly larger screen and the lack of glossy luster on the screen. Also, it's still working after watching several movies.

This DVD player feels a little heavy, but considering it's long playback time before recharging, the battery HAS to be a little large and heavy.

The audio sounds tinny, due to the small speakers, but is OK using headphones. I would only use headphones in any case, to help me focus on the movie and block outside noises.

All in all, the player works well and for a portable player, I like it.

Audio and video are great, but it won't randomly shuffle between discs. If you're playing a CD, it will randomize the tracks on one disc but won't move on to another disc until all tracks of the first are played.

Bought this to replace an older Sony model. Install was easy, just moved the cords from the old player to the new player and plugged it in. The remote is slightly different from the older model, but easy enough to figure out.
We wanted a player to reliably play DVDs with the ease of the 5 disc changer. This does it.

I had the wrong disc error that many people had. We ordered the item just before flying to New York, and had it shipped over night so our sons could watch movies on the plane. Well, the first one played with out a problem, then the next one started the errors. I had read this was possible and had other items to entertain the kids so it was no big deal. Really wish this one had worked because the batery powered player at this low cost would be great even if it only lasted a year... It did seem really well built.

I purchased two of these coby players around christmas 2006. These were great little players for about 4 months then they started acting up....not wanting to play the dvd giving a "wrong disc error" this happed off and on ( i contacted coby but the warranty was already past they would do nothing) then about 6 months old (june 2007)they have completely quite working.

Looks nice, which is why I bought it. After using it for only two, very long car trips with my toddler we started getting the "wrong disk" error message - and it's out of warranty because it sat in a drawer for 4 months (unused). We only played 3 or 4 DVDs on it and it was treated very delicately. Other issues: Gets very hot, the power button is covered by the headrest mounting fabric case, and even if under warranty you pay shipping fees for something THEY did wrong. I would NOT recommend this unit to anybody!

Reading the other reviews, I understand that I'm even one of the lucky ones!

I purchased my TF-DVD7050 on May 2006 and it stopped working just one year after.

During those 12 months my 5-yr.-old has used it extensively, dropped it on the floor and mishandled it in quite a few ways. I even hacked the region-coding so it had become a region-free player. It worked very fine. Then, suddently the picture became in B&W, then nothing at all. The buttons on the screen also failed to work. I can still use it with the remote and attaching it to a TV with the cable supplied.

Fiddling with it I understood that the cause is probably the tiny wires connecting the screen to the body of the device.

Living in Italy, I don't have any way to receive assistance from Coby. I contacted them with 4 emails: 2 to customer service and 2 to tech-support. I hoped to get some advice for having it repaired by a technician here. I NEVER received an answer!!!

First I thought to buy another one, but then reading the reviews here on Amazon, I realized that the product has probably become worse during these last few months. That's the reason I sayed I'm one of the lucky ones...

I will have to look for a quality brand and spend more :-(

It's a pity, it had so many features, great screen image and the price was just right. Farewell Coby, you'll NEVER see me again!

My HP ZV-series notebook had always been a bit much to lug around in public together with its oversized power supply, both stuffed into a large case. As part of a holiday treat for myself, I picked up this Kensington adapter along with a smaller, sleek case. Now the notebook feels a lot more portable and svelte to bring around.

The flat form factor of the Kensington is definitely the star feature, and together with the universal voltage capability, auto power cord, and wide range of adapter tips, the unit provides great value.

As reported in these reviews, it would have been great to have a longer or retractable power cord; I need to carry along a 6 ft extension just in case. Yes it does get hot, but I can't imagine that the original design deliberately meant for it to be dangling awkwardly from the wall or crouching from a floor outlet in order to allow cooling.

One caveat - my ZV actually draws power right at the Kensington's upper limit, and this can cause my notebook to not charge the battery while it's on. I sometimes will need to put it in standby or hibernate to enable charging. No fault of Kensington - my system is not on their supported list anyway, but I did manage to get a tip that works.

Definitely try to get this unit for way less than the $100 "standard price".

What I really liked about this was its flat form factor - the original power supply that came with my "thin and light" notebook was like a brick, making it impossible to carry it in the notebook's slim carrying case without showing a distinctive bulge. While the Kensington probably is the same size volume-wise its hardly a half-inch thick (while being bigger in other dimensions) which makes it easy to carry it along with my notebook.

The short power cable does leave a lot to be desired, and it tends to get hot (I read in other reviews that the two are related -- supposedly they want you to hang this off the wall socket instead of lay it on a surface, so as to cool it down) but both are not show stoppers and for the reasonable price, it works great as a second adapter for home/office. No major complaints besides these nits.

My laptop is advertised in the Kensington website to be used with this adapter. They have the pin N3 advertised for the product. I ordered the pin also separately for another $10.99. And guess what? The adapter does not work with my laptop. When I called the Kensington support they were of not any help.

A nice product, unfortunately my laptop's mother board fried. It was not due to this but as a result of a company not fixing my laptop correctly. It fried the previous cord but I thought the cord went faulty so I decided to buy this. It is a nice product and a lot cheaper than what name brand computer companies want for their plug replacements.

The only compaint I would have, the cord is too short from the wall outlet to the power adapater. Would be nice if it was just a little bigger even by a few inches so it could not have risk of being pulled out.

Great for travelers needing mixed voltage inputs. Will plug into just about anything anywhere; only a solar panel would make it more versatile! Smaller and lighter than any laptop charger I'm familiar with, and takes the place of an auto charger so you have one less device to tote and keep up with. Rather expensive unless you shop; don't pay over $50 unless you don't have the time to save money. Get the wind-up cord to go with it and you have the perfect world-traveler power package.

Precision Cinema Progressive
While other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level, Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the pixel level. This makes the picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because the technology uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle the differing pixel behavior. It also uses separate algorithms to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are virtually free from motion artifacts.

MP3 and JPEG File Playback
The DVP-NS55P/S plays MP3 sound files and JPEG photo files. Simply insert the disc and use the remote control to navigate through your folders to your files. The player also recognizes image files on a Kodak photo disc.

Home Theater Compatible
The player is compatible with Dolby Digital and dts decoding and includes 96KHz 24-bit coaxial digital output and a 193 KHz 24bit audio digital-to-analog converter for analog RCA audio output. On the video side, it features a 12-bit video digital-to-analog converter with 108Mhz processing for a sharp image.

The slim lines and neat appearance alone are almost worth the price, but the best part is the clear picture. One must accept with 'under-counter' that there will be some sacrifice of scale that must be traded for eliminating the bulkiness of a larger screen TV. You wouldn't choose to watch the Super Bowl on a 10" underscreen TV but that's not why you buy this. You want to have a TV, audio and DVD source in an area of your house where you don't want to or can't devote a tremendous amount of space to the unit but you have cable access. This is the perfect solution. It is easy to install, the swivel is smooth and secure, the speakers are worthy - in short, I cannot recommend this enough.
