Customer Reviews:
Ok for limited recording!.......2005-10-27
I was lucky! I got this Labor Day weekend on special at K-mart for only $99 for the sole purpose of recording my extensive VHS to DVD. Especially those videos not even available on DVD.
I ruined only two blank DVD's before I realized the DVD HAD to be connected directly to the TV and could not be used as a "stand alone" to record directly from video to DVD.
Also, I had to return blank DVD's twice because, as other buyers have said, it doesn't recognize all types or brands. It has to be 4X. I finally found two types from BIG LOTS that work fine. {RCA and Memorex DVD-R 4X; FUJI didn't work and from other bad experiences with this brand, including their blank CD's...you should consider something else!}
It also does not copy from videos with copy-guards which was very disappointing as certain studios have guards on even the unpopular movies.
I still cannot get the "CHAPTERs" selection to work, which separates in 15 minute to 30 minute intervals in a movie etc.. But I rarely use that feature anyway. BUT if you stop recording and start again then it DOES start a new chapter/ selection which is fine for recording TV series and having different chapters per episode. {You can always use the pause feature for commercials and not have to start a new chapter"
The edit feature of putting on "TITLES" takes a little getting used to but works fine. And after you "FINALIZE" the DVD it seems to work in all kinds of players.
I am pleased because it does what I want it to. The only downfalls are the purchasing of blanks and the chapter selection not working. So if you find one at my price, get it, stock u[p on blanks and look for a descrambler..if even available anymore!
DON'T BUY THIS RECORDER!!!!.......2005-08-24
THIS RECORDER IS THE BIGGEST PIECE OF ELECTRONIC JUNK I HAVE EVER PURCHASED!! I'M JUST GLAD I BOUGHT IT AT COSTCO AND CAN RETURN IT!! YES, YES, YES, I USED THE CORRECT DVD-R's!! TECH SUPPORT, IF YOU WANT TO CALL IT THAT, WAS A JOKE!! REPEATEDLY RECEIVED A "RECORDING ERROR" "CANNOT RECORD TO THIS DISC"----THE DVD'S WERE BRAND NEW AND I HAD ABOUT 10 MOVIES ALREADY RECORDED ON THE SAME EXACT DISCS!!!! SAVE YOUR MONEY, SHOP AROUND AND GO WITH ANOTHER BRAND/MODEL!! THANK YOU!!
good but not great.......2005-05-27
I've owned the sylvania DVR90DE for about 10 months. It was incredibly easy to set up and use. I have never had a problem recording TV programs and it works great for making DVD copies of my VHS tapes. I do find that the picture quality gets pretty suspect if I record at more than 6 hours per disc. I mostly use DVD-RW media and I prefer to record at 4 hours.
I would give this recorder 4-5 stars except for the fact that it doesn't work on DVD-Rs rated above 4X and DVD-RWs above 2X. That means it won't record or even play a DVD that is rated above 4X, even if its recorded at 4X. I would not have bought this unit if I had known this in advance. Having said that, it hasn't been too big of a problem yet as i am able to get 1-4X DVD-Rs. However, these DVDs are getting harder to find; I have to order online as I can't buy them in stores anymore. Also, if I was to try to play a DVD-R that someone else recorded, it most likely won't work as most people are using the higher speed DVD-Rs.

DVD Recorders have arguably been more popular than meets the eye the past several years. There is just absolutely no doubt about it. Of course there are just so many different kinds of DVD recorders. The most popular ones happens to be the DVD/VCR recorder combos. Yet, Sylvannia has proven it absolutely before with the well-recognized DVR90VE DVD Recorder, and there is definitely been a sequel added on to the mix. This is a well-made DVD recorder company to make that happen again.
Sylvania's DVR90DE, is a graciously assembled DVD recorder that is just very convient for all. The use of the DVD recrder here is quite amazing with a easy to use guide for anyubody who wants to learn how to make DVD recording of you own. The discs are recorded well, and don't have a problem in length. In fact, you can record as many as 10 hours locked within each disc. Yet, there are a couple of disadvantages in this compiled DVD recorder. One of them is that you are not able to record, or even playback on DVD+RW/R discs, which are featured on other DVD recorders, or even the hard to find compatible DVD-RAM discs, which are most found within Panasonic DVD recorders. The second disadvantage is that you'd have to use the 2X speed DVD-RW discs to rewrite on these players. Of course, you could always contact customer service for help with this scenario.
Arguably, Sylvania has some very good products for anybody who wants to be on te cutting edge of DVD capability. This is a quality priced DVD recorder, especially for anybody who just can't find the best in DVD recorders in price alone.

I purchased this unit for Christmas 2004 and have yet to find a disc that will work for recording from VHS to DVD. This has been a nightmare. I would return the unit had the box not been accidently thrown out with the rest of the Christmas trash. Save yourself a headache and try another unit.
