Customer Reviews:
Good basic DVD player; small profile.......2007-05-21
In reading online reviews I was under the impression that this DVD player would do upsampling of DVDs to 720p (effective). Unfortunately, it's the next model up from this one. Nonetheless, this player is nicely made, the price is right, and you really can't go wrong if you want a good basic DVD player.
beware.......2007-05-17
do not buy this dvd player if you are looking for multi region . It works only for us-canada dvd
beware region 1 only!.......2007-05-16
This is a good player but it is NOT multi-region capable as some reviews suggest. I ended up finally with a Toshiba from VCT electronics that is multi-region.
Pioneer Not What Is Needed.......2007-05-15
This DVD player was purchased on the basis of the description and links that described it as a region free, PAL/NTSC, 110/240 volt campatible system. It did not meet any of these criteria. It requires code entry to attempt to play DVDs that are not A category; only puts out NTSC signals; and requires 110V and is not dual voltage capable. Unit was returned and I am still waiting refund.
Pay attention to what this DVD player can/can't do.......2007-05-12
I unfortunately did not do my homework on this DVD Player. I read and trusted other customer reviews which said that it played multi-region DVDs. This DVD player is NOT a multi-region DVD player. In the manual it states that it is a REGION 1 player (US) only. Although the player did play 2 of my British (Region2) discs, I had a dozen more that it would not play.
It's a great DVD player for the price, just not what I thought it was.....my fault entirely but I want to make sure no-one elsemakes the same mistake. Shipping to return the item was costly!

Amazon.com Review
The Pioneer DV-F727 is not the average, run-of-the-mill multidisc changer. Even if your audio CD and DVD collections are quite sizeable, you can stash the goods neatly inside this 301-disc capacity "media server," then call selections up with the same ease and excitement as you would by keying an entry on a jukebox. An onscreen cataloging system helps manage your inventory, with an auto update feature that scans for new disc additions.
Should your collection really bulk out, it's even possible to double the system's capacity by linking two DV-F727s. All the while, you'll still maintain easy control over the whole kit 'n caboodle via a single, fully-featured and user-friendly remote control (supplied), or using an optional, plug-in PS/2 style computer keyboard or mouse.
One of the most elaborately featured DVD players we've ever encountered, the DV-F727 also takes care of the basics quite well--delivering pristine pictures and sound with component-video (interlace), S-Video, and composite-video outputs. Sound-wise, its optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs definitely deliver the Dolby Digital, DTS, and PCM stereo (up to 96 kHz, 24-bit) soundtracks. The player's Burr-Brown audio digital-to-analog converter and conventional analog jacks also proved quite fine.
Handy jog-shuttle dials on both the front panel and the remote make it a pleasure to manipulate the multispeed forward and reverse trick-play options.
Customizable settings let you vary picture parameters to taste or adjust the audio dynamic range for late night listening--so that soft sounds such as dialogue can be heard more clearly without making loud sounds even louder.
Given its immense disc storage capacity, this changer is remarkably compact--measuring about 16.5 inches wide, 17 inches deep, and 7.75 high.
The holding slots are accessible, one at a time, behind a motorized opening/closing Plexiglas "hood." Of course, there's also the option to quickly install and then remove a single disc--via the dedicated 301st slot--with its operation complemented by special "single loader" access and play keys.
Entering menu text and numerical data about stockpiled titles is reasonably easy. Information can be added using the onscreen soft keyboard in tandem with the cursor control joystick on the remote, or with the selection dial on the front panel. To speed up the process, there's also the option of plugging in and entering text on a conventional PS/2 computer keyboard.
Making life easier still, some music CDs now contain and automatically stream their own album and song title info (CD Text), which this changer will conveniently read, display, and automatically integrate into its program menu memory. If implemented, DVD text information is also downloadable. (A front-panel display lights up to indicate the presence of such text on a disc.)
A couple of bummers: you must abbreviate text entries when a title or artist's name exceeds 12 characters, the max this changer's memory will store and display. CD Text titles longer than 12 characters, while not memorized, will scroll across the LCD screen. Also take note: when a disc is playing, you can't enter data, or add or remove other discs.
Once program data is entered into the megachanger's memory, titles can be sorted and accessed by format (DVD or CD), disc title (alphabetically), or disc number.
Another option: you can create and name 20 custom files (10 DVD/Video CD and 10 CD) for automatic playback. However, there's still no avoiding the mandatory setup menus and unskippable FBI Warning before DVD play commences.
All in all, the DV-F727 represents a remarkable piece of engineering and entertainment prowess from the folks at Pioneer.
Pros:
- Immense storage capacity neatly organizes your disc library
- Easy entry of data via remote control, keyboard, or mouse
- Fine video and audio performance
- A host of customizable programming and performance parameters
Cons:
- Discs can't be exchanged or text entered while a disc is playing
- Text entries can't exceed 12 characters
- Menu system doesn't accommodate filing by genre or theme

Customer Reviews:
Good product, some issues.......2007-05-13
I bought this unit and set it up with component video cables, most movies play well although some movies with dim scenes are blacked out losing many details. Adjusting the gamma, brightness, and other settings did not help. I contacted Pioneer email support I was referred to their M-F 8-5 phone support, called the tech and he stated 'it's broke, send it back' with the perceived intent of finishing the call as soon as possible. I called back and got the same tech who seemed put out that I called back and putting me on hold for a few minutes the stated 'it's broke' again and wouldn't diagnose further. Working with email tech support after this I got much better support and more detailed diagnostics steps to take (has helped some). Aside from darkened imaged and poor phone support this is a nice product.
Pros: easy of setup and use, good quality image with component video
Cons: darkened images on some movies, no HDMI output, and poor phone support.
Overall a good product that has reached end of production cycle. I'd advise waiting until Pioneer released the new version of this unit before purchasing so that you get the HDMI abilities. Many poor reviews of the Sony models steered me away from that manufacturer.
Pioneer DV-F727 301-Disc DVD Changer.......2007-02-26
I purchased both the Sony DVPCX995V and the Pioneer and compared them side by side. I took the Sony back and kept the Pionneer. This was to simplify the kids life (load all their DVD's and not have to worry about finger prints, scratches etc). The menu is fast and easy and compared the Sony, this thing quickly rotates the the chosen disc. Having to constantly re-enter titles on the Sony was what did it in for me. I haven't had any issues at all with the Pioneer. Remembers all the disc titles even when I am shuffling the discs around for better organization. Well worth the money!
Pros: Quick and easy menu, remembers DVD titles, quick searching for DVD titles.
Cons: Only enter 12 characters for titles, no HDMI, or other High Def output.
Great way to keep discs easily accessible yet safe........2007-01-04
We have two of these units connected to enlarge the capacity even more. With our smaller kids it enables us to load the DVD's when purchased and no one has to handle them again. No more scratches or lost discs. We love these, I just wish I could find something similiar for the playstation and computer games.
We have had our first one for 6 years with no problems to date.
DVD disc changer.......2006-07-10
I all ready have 3 other Sony products operating from one remote. There were no other command controls to add a 4th Sony DVD changer,so I picked this Pioneer disc changer. It stacks up great to the Sony changers I have.Very easy to use right out of box.The one con I can see is once DVD's are loaded I can't seem to find an eject button to remove a DVD if I wanted to.The price was a little higher than the Sony 400 disc DVD player I own but I see no reson not to buy this one.Especially if you only need one and not 3 or more. You can also daisy chain two of these together and have all controls for both in one remote.Again I use a Sony intregated remote commander RM-AV3100 which allows for up to 18 products to be programmed into it.
reliable but with a few glitches.......2004-10-01
I bought this unit to hold my entire library, which it does, but won't in a very short while! The machine has never had any malfunctions such as jammed discs and it gets a very good workout. sound and picture quality are excellent. My number one complaint is that the settings spontaneously change, indicating that the machine is plugged into a widescreen TV. I have a 4:3 TV, but all my movies are widescreen. For some aggravating reason, the player will spontaneously start showing the widescreen movie in FULL screen because it thinks the TV is a WIDE screen unit, even though i have set it numerous times to 4:3!! then i have to stop the movie and change the setting back (for the 30th time) so it will play properly. also, they could have allowed more characters for title input, but that is a minor gripe. the user interface can also be a little clumsy, but i can't complain too much about that either. I would recommend this machine even with its comparitively high price tag.

nice but lacking .......2007-01-30
My older discontinued Pioneer 588A which I love has more features then this such as optic audio out and sacd this unit sadly lacks
but is nice unit for those who do not require this
but sadly I do and would of be buying the DV-696 promised last January 2006 at the Las Vegas show but never delved to the US market(only released in Europe)
Incompatiblity Issue: Read before buying.......2006-10-25
I replaced a 13 month old Toshiba SD-V593 DVD/VCR combo unit with this Pioneer DVD. Toshiba player broke after the time mentioned and is already in the junk yard. See my review on that thing, please, before buying one.
But on to the Pioneer: This Pioneer unit, after set up, which was easy enough, gave me a surprise, an unfortunate one! Mated through the HDMI cable to my Sony KD 34XS955 HDTV (34" screen, 16:9 ratio), any DVD played was severly cropped. Wide screen DVD's had bars both above and below the picture. Full screen picture was cropped at the sides -- the full screen image from the Toshiba was FULL SCREEN. I know all the stretchings and so forth tricks but couldn't get a full screen picture, so I phoned Pioneer for information from "technical support."
Well, a pleasant person, after grasping what I was saying, that I wanted to have a true "full screen" image sans zoomings, stretchings or whatever, excused themselves to "read through the manual for a minute." Ok, fine... but I myself had, by the time I was forced to call Pioneer support, virtually memorized the manual and had manipulated both the DVD player and the TV manifold times, to no satisfactory end.
After support person came back on the phone, I was told I would "probably" have to add some cable connecton, like, for example, component cables, then try it again. Hogwash. I bought the DVD player with the HDMI so there wouldn't be screwing around with cables. I sure don't know what the issue is, but if you've a wide screen TV, don't buy this unit.
I've no quarrel with clarity of picture, sound or set up -- though it did take many button pushings on the remote to get the settings to change during set up procedure; really reluctant to make commanded changes, for some reason? As concerning image clarity, I cannot really say what it might have looked like IF it had filled my TV's screen, as it should have on full screen mode.
Bottom line: This unit of slight use to me, except as a gap-filler before the Sony DVD player I've had to order gets here. How many times do we consumers have to buy electronic gadgets to get one that will work as it should and not self-destruct either right away or after just a year or so?
Excellent performance at a great price.......2006-09-26
This is an excellent DVD player for matching with a HD TV. I am using it with a Samsung LNS2651D 26" LCD HDTV in my bedroom and I am impressed with the result. I have it coupled with HDMI. This gives the best visual performance by far and is probably required for 1080i upscaling.
The player also handles DivX in Home theatre profile (i.e. no support for DivX HD profile,as tested on the material I had) and gives good results. It is supposed to handle MP3 and WMA formats, but I have bought this primarily for video entertainment and have not tested those features.
Startup and loading DVD is a bit slow - takes about 10-15 seconds.
Overall a great purchase for the price from Amazon.

Customer Reviews:
Really good value.......2005-07-07
For those that need a simple dvd player, this is a very good choice. It plays DVD, DVD-R/W, DVD+R/W, VCD, JPEG CD's, and MP3/WMA. The outputs consist of the typical analog (Red, White, yellow cord), the better S-video (weird 5-pin circular hole), and the superior Component (Red, Green, Blue cord). The DVD player also comes with the digital audio DTS and Dolby Digital decoders allowing for those 5.1 and above sound systems; Not to mention the virtual surround option for those nasty cheap DVD's that only have 2.0 sound, which actually helps the sound created by recievers with the Neo:6 and Prologic II(x) options.
The only limitation to the product is the lack of a Toslink optical out. Yeah you are stuck with a coaxial, but honestly, quality doesn't change with the optical cables. You might even be better off as toslink connectors are reported to be delicate, but it is still a limiting factor.
As far as system menus go, I enjoy the ease of use this one particularly offers. Those of us that are picky enjoy the ability to tweak the image to our liking, as well as changing the sound to hear dialogue better.
In our living room, we have gone through DVD players left and right for skipping problems, or complete failure to recognize any DVD, but the Pioneer DV-270 in my room has gone strong for almost two years. In short, the player prooves to be a good value with all the necessities, and no problems.

Good recorder.......2006-08-28
I got this recorder for Christmas and so far it works wonderful. There is one draw back but this goes with any dvd recorder. You can't play recorded things on normal dvd players or on the computer. They don't recognize the discs. Until the normal dvd players catch up to the new technology you can only watch recorded dvd's on the dvd recorder. Other than that its great!
Lack of reliability for Pioneer DVD recorders.......2006-08-25
I purchased the similar Pioneer 310 DVD recorder at the end of last July. The unit received little use; I would estimate 30 movies and 3 recorded discs in a 12 month span. Unfortunately for me, just at the 12 month Pioneer warranty mark, the unit stopped working. When putting a dvd in, it says 'loading' for about 30 seconds, makes some strange noises, then ejects the disc. I tried a lens cleaning dvd but it would not recognize that either. I contacted Pioneer customer service and after a few emails back and forth, they stated that they would not cover the unit under warranty - I would need to ship it to them with a $70 non-refundable evaluation fee enclosed!? The unit will go in the garbage and the $70 will go toward a more reliable brand DVD recorder. Lesson learned.
Excellent Recorder with minor setbacks.......2006-04-19
This player is exceptionally easy to use. For the most part everything that pervious reviewers said is true. The interface is quite straight forward and recording is easy to set up. As stated by another, this recorder works only with -R and -RW, not +R or +RW. Also, I find it absoultely true that the on screen title and chapter naming is a pain, however with a remote control don't think there would be any better of a method available.
Timer and VCR+ recording is nice but I would have liked to see a recording stop timer or something to that effect (if the box is currently recording, tell it to stop in 35 minutes). As it in now you MUST enter a start and stop time.
Another thing I noted is that except via coax connections, video is not sent to the video output unless the unit is on. Lastly, be sure that you are aware this, like almost all units, has copyprotection and will not record copyrighted content.
Overall an easy to use, excellent product at a good price. Better than the Sony model and $25 less.
Good to Go!.......2006-03-19
I ordered this from Amazon because the reviewers indicated that it was easy to setup and use. That is absolutely true. I am not very good at these kinds of things, but it was easy and it seems to work great. It's slim, has an attractive style, and is just what I need. I am using this to record programs from my DVR provided by my cable company. And boy did Amazon get it here quickly. A local company charged about $20.00 more AND I would have to wait 2-3 weeks, and I live in a major metropolitan area.
clarification.......2006-01-02
I got this delivered about a week ago. I would not dispute any of the other reviews - it's a good brand, it's a good quality product, remote and on-screen menu are kinda bare bones but get the job done, probably there are better out there but this one is great for the price !
Note if purchasing: the unit DOES function with both DVD/R and DVD/RW but it MUST be -R or -RW...not +R or +RW. Hopes this saves you from having to pull the manual back out and dig for this info if your disks won't work.
(I know it says this above, but it's important to know b/c +R or +RW will NOT work)

This dvd works perfectly. I absolutely love it. It's easy to use and works with everything.

I happened to buy some DVDs that were available only in PAL. I also had some CDVideos plus some karaoke discs. This Pioneer player is terrific . . . it plays all formats plus has HDMI to "upgrade" regular DVDs to almost HD quality. Lives up to Pioneer's reputation.

It's not perfect, but a good machine while waiting for HD format wars to settle.......2007-03-02
I purchased this machine refurbished from Panasonic for a total of $150, including shipping, making the imperfections quite tolerable. It does much more than my previous DVD recorder which was twice the price. I have a Sony Bravia LCD HDTV and the display from this machine is quite good. After setting up the format for my widescreen TV, it worked like a charm.
I do not intend to use it as a tuner. I rent an HD DVR from Comcast for tuning. I really did not see much difference in the video quality on playback with commercial DVDs, but for my home recorded DVDs, the improvement is significant. VHS also will play through the HDMI cable, with some improvement too. These are formated for 4:3 aspect ratio and there really is no getting around it until you can get an input that supports high resolution 16:9 through component or HDMI interface. I was able to record from my OnDemand playlist through Comcast (something you cannot do on the rented DVR).
As with other reviewers, I am puzzled by the lack of eject and open/close functions on the remote, which even the cheap sets have. However, this machine does have very easy to use buttons that are large and right next to each slot on the machine. My past machines had tiny buttons that looked like all the others for the eject and open/close functions, making the remote almost a necessity. You do have to get up and walk over to the machine to get your disk or videotape out anyway, so this was not a huge deal for me. However, it did have trouble recognizing some DVDs at first pass, and I had to open/close the tray a few times before it recognized there was a playable disc in the drawer. So, you may want to wait by the machine while it reads before you sit down to watch.
The remote is fairly intuitive, particularly if you are used to DVD-R functions.
A huge rave for me is in regard to the flexible recording option, allowing you to customize the recording time on the DVD to fill the DVD, regardless of the length of the recording. This way you have the best possible recording quality. This is quite similar to DVD recording on your PC. Finalizing is a snap and much quicker than my old Sansui recorder.
Great for converting VHS to DVD, but Tuner is Terrible.......2007-02-15
This model (also the DMR-ES35VS which I tried before) has a terrible tuner. When viewing TV programs (I have a 42" Sony Wega High Definition TV) through the machine to record them, the picture is degraded by 40% I think, and the color is not vibrant. And this is with the HDMI connection. At first, I thought the HDMI cable that it came with was no good, so I bought a $90 HDMI Monster Cable, but there was no improvement in the picture. Also, the remote control does not have an eject button, why is that? Even my old VCRs and DVD recorder/player have that feature.
If you want to convert VHS tapes to DVD only, then buy this machine it's great for that purpose. But if you also want to record shows from your TV, then I would suggest you check out other models/brands because the picture quality on this Panasonic is unacceptable (to me anyway). I will be returning this machine and will get another Sony, my two-year old VCR/DVD recorder has a great tuner.
Poor picture quality.......2007-01-28
I ordered a DMR-ES45VS refurbished but they shipped a Dmr-ES46VS. I called
they said it was the same but came with a free HDNI cable. It was a little tough to figure out. The complaint I have is the picture quality, even when
you just use it as a tuner the picture quality is worse that when you don't.
Thats using the HDMI or S output. Called tech. dept.,waited for 45min only
to be hung up on. Called back again 45 min wait, the tech. didn't have clue.
Called again, same wait, this tech was worse. Tried to send a email twice
on their web site couldn't. Company says I can ship it back if I pay the shipping. So far bad news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not easy to use, often requires restarts, slooooow. .......2006-12-16
I wish I hadn't bought this unit. I didn't do my research and now I'm paying the price. Often I must put the DVD in twice to get it to run. I've learned that if the DVD doesn't play, take it out and put it in again. I tried the tape-to-DVD burn feature (looked simple) and somehow recorded a TV station instead. So I will have to re-read the instructions and try again. One other thing to consider before buying...this piece of electronics has the loooongest startup time I have ever encountered. I could start my car and drive a block by the time this unit has turned on and is ready to accept a tape or a disc. How could electronics be so slow?
Almost perfect.......2006-08-09
If all you want is great picture quality, get this model. The HDMI upconversion is great and it does it with the VHS also. I really liked the flex recording feature which allows you to specify any recording lenght and it will record the best quality for that disc time. I just wish it was more complete. It records DL DVD but not continuously. You have to close the 1st layer before recording to the 2nd layer, which makes it not very good in the way of a dual layer recorder. Now this might be a bit nit-picky but this unit won't display the remaining time while playing a regular DVD video or give give you the total disc time. I just like to know how late I'll be staying up. Also the ES46VS has no eject button on the remote, no direct way of turning on the subtitles without having to go through a menu series, it will only accept SD cards, and there are no component inputs for recording. I returned my unit and will wait until Panasonic offers these simple fixes in a $300 device.

Warning! Not all USB drives will work - only low power drives........2007-07-02
I bought this unit for the USB port. Pretty decent DVD player so far. I had a Philips and it beats that one hands down.
Unfortunately, the USB port can only supply enough power for low power USB devices. The small flash drives will work. The bigger USB disk drives powered only by USB will not. The external disk drives that also have a power connection will work. Not nearly as convenient though.
I give it two stars because of this drawback. Engineering-wise, it would not have been hard to supply more power. Frustrating.
This limitation is mentioned in the instruction manual (but then again who would have access to that before purchasing, let alone wonder if their drive would work).
Upconverting Performance Marginal.......2007-06-28
I bought this model to improve my upconverting performance for my legacy DVDs. I had been using my Xbox360 to play DVDs into my 1080P 40" Samsung LCD TV. After reading a review comparing the Xbox unfavorably to a high-end Denon upconverting DVD player, I decided to look for a better player. I brought home the Pioneer and discovered the Xbox360 performs this task better. Note to self, sales staff typically know NOTHING.
Finally a great DVD player that plays DivX.......2007-06-09
In the last week, I've gone through a Toshiba SD-5000 and a Philips DVP5982 DVD player. Both had their serious flaws and had to be returned. The Toshiba had audio-sync issues with DivX files. Plus it the display on the machine itself doesn't display the current time of the movie.
The Philips stuttered horribly on DivX files even though it was "DivX Ultra" certified.
The Pioneer solves these problems and is clearly superior to these two other machines. I should have known...the old DVD player we are replacing is 8 years old and is a Pioneer. Served us very well, but it was time to upgrade to a model that has progressive scan, HD Upsampling, and DivX playback. Plays everything great including the same DivX files that the other 2 machines struggled with. The User Interface is much much better. The machine also operates faster...boots faster, menus are snappier, etc.
I highly recommend this Pioneer.

HDMI interface (DV-696AV-S, DV-490V-S)
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is an industry-supported all-digital audio/video interface. Pioneer's new DVD players with HDMI outputs and video up-conversion allow viewers to watch and listen to DVDs with exceptional audio and video resolution. It also makes set-up and connection to the rest of A/V components much easier since everything can be connected through a single cable.
DivX® Playback
All the new Pioneer DVD players allow playback of DivX® files burned on a CD-R/RW/ROM disc. DivX® is a popular media technology including compressed digital video which ensures a high compression rate and fast transfer speed without appreciably compromising the picture quality. What's more, the DV-696AV-S is an official DivX® Ultra Certified product. This means the unit lets you enjoy DivX® files with interactive features like DVD Video - including menus, selectable subtitle languages/audio tracks, and so on.
Dual PureCinema Progressive Scan
Dual progressive scan, the advanced version of the Pioneer's trademark technology, enables the DVD players to provide smooth, natural, film-like images free of bothersome artefacts like jagged edges on moving objects.

The ULTIMATE ALL PURPOSE DVD UP-CONVERTER.......2007-06-28
Pros: If you want a DVD player that plays: DivX files, all region dvd's, Mpeg4's, avi's and having the ability to up-convert your audio video via HDMI or component or toslink, this is your dream machine. It also has the AC3 codec for true 5.1 surround. This DVD player has a great GUI and easy to use. Absolutely easy setup.
Cons: I'm not sure if its operator error or if its the hardware itself or if its the DVD but in some cases the dvd movie doesn't expand all the way on the screen. I would notice these issues with older dvd's but not with newer ones. I may have to do some tweaking.
Overall: excellent DVD player for ALL the bells and whistles it contains. Pioneer DV-696AV HDMI Multi Region Code Free Zone Free UP-Converting DVD Player PAL/NTSC on ANY TV
Cable Recommendations: Be sure to purchase your HDMI cables on Amazon dot com. They're cheap and there's absolutely no difference with the expensive $170 (HDMI to HDMI 6ft) retail versions. Buy it for 5 bucks (both shipping and item) and save 165 bucks. HDMI 2M (6 Feet) Super High Resolution Cable
Great picture with HDTVs using HDMI cables, and plays Region 2 DVDs.......2007-03-04
I just hooked up my new Pioneer DV-696AV to my new 42" HDTV today and watched a couple of movies. The quality of the video from normal DVDs is very good, very close to true high definition. I'm connecting to my TV with an HDMI cable, which is what you need for this HDMI player to get the best quality picture. If you're using a home theater with surround sound speakers but don't have HDMI ports and switching on your receiver, like most of us, you will not be able to directly control or switch high definition audio directly through your receiver. [...] For a standard surround sound receiver, there is a work around that will allow you to hear surround sound through your stereo . You can use a digital or S-Video connection (or even a standard cable connection) between your HDMI DVD player and your stereo. You can use an HDMI cable between your HDTV satellite or cable box and your HDTV television. You can run a second HDMI cable from your HDMI DVD player directly to your HDTV . That way you will have surround sound with both your satellite/cable and DVD player inputs. Of course, you will also need to select the currect input device using the menu on your HDTV to run the TV or the DVD player and select the source of input on your receiver.
Also, the Pioneer DV-696AV plays both Region 1 (NTSC video, used in the US and other countries in the Americas and Region 2 (PAL) video used Europe, Greenland, Japan, South Africa, and the Middle East. You can watch movies in Region 2/PAL format on your Region 1/NTSC TV. This is a great advantage if you don't want to wait until movies from those regions get released in the US. I have yet to buy my first PAL DVD to test how this DVD player works however. But I do know that Amazon sites in other countries are the easiest way to buy PAL DVDs in the US since you can use your US logon to purchase DVDs on these websites.
