Bring some flat-screen elegance to your office, dorm, kitchen, bedroom, or apartment with Toshiba's compact, lightweight 23HL84 LCD television. With minimal glare, no screen curvature, and no irritating high-frequency screen noise, the 23-inch set stands fully apart from its CRT counterparts. Set it on a table using the supplied stand or mount it on the wall using optional brackets for ultimate space efficiency.

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, long screen life with no risk of image burn-in, and space savings. This 1,366 x 768-resolution set boasts not only 2 ColorStream HD high-definition (up to 720p) component-video inputs, but also a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) for a direct digital connection with an HD set-top box or HD satellite receiver (sold separately).

HD Dynamic Contrast increases contrast and color saturation to create deep, rich images. The intelligent circuitry analyzes both the dark and bright areas of the picture, separately optimizing the dynamic range in each area. Picture enhancements include luminance transient improvement, green enhancement, and blue stretch. This circuit is only active in sports mode and works with all inputs.

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). Two sets of rear AV inputs (one with S-video) and a set of front AV inputs foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear audio output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

And the 5-watts-per-channel 23HL84 offers SRS WOW processing, which combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices). If that's not enough aural excitement, you can also enjoy 2-channel simulated surround courtesy of Dolby Virtual Surround.

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great TV at a reasonable price..........2006-08-09

...I bought this LCD TV back in January so I have had several months to determine how much I like it. Bottom line, I love it. We use it in our master bedroom in an armoire and the picture and sound are fantastic. I ran our HD DVR box to the TV using an HDMI cable (pricey but worth it) and the progressive scan DVD player using one set of the component inputs. This is my second Toshiba and I am a huge fan of their TV's.

4 out of 5 stars Great TV with a few minor issues.......2005-01-12

First of all of course the quality of the device; It's well built, has pretty much all the inputs you need and has a decent cable management system in the back (you'll need it). Image quality is good but not amazing when in standard resolution, HD quality however is very impressive (hooked up with an HDMI cable). DVD quality when played off a component DVD player is outstanding.

Audio quality of the TV is good, nice and loud with plenty of settings possible.

Switching between inputs leaves a little to be desired, it takes around 2-3 seconds for it to pick up on the input.

The bad:

I wanted to hang it on a wall, the specs do not mention the VESA mounts it has on the back, the manaual doesn't mention it either. Nor does the manual mention how to dismantle the stand, something you need to do in order to mount it.

The PC interface is fairly useless as it won't let you go above 1024*768, a real shame when you have a 1300*768 panel in front of you.

The TV doesn't come with ANY cables (not even an antenna coax cable) so expect to invest another $200 in decent cables.

Pricing is also an issue, after purchasing this TV the price dropped almost $300 and Amazon wouldn't issue a refund, so keep your eye on the price and/or reseller.

Despite it's few quirks it's certainly an appealing TV and one of the cheaper A name brands in this price class, we researched several non A name brands (like Syntax Olevia) but they don't com e close to the quality of this TV.

5 out of 5 stars A very nice television for any room in your house.......2004-12-26

I purchased this Toshiba because I wanted to upgrade my big-black-box of a 29 inch TV. I was going to wait until next Summer but circumstances prevailed and I am very happy with this set. The picture is visually as big as the 29 inch television. It took two men to lift the old TV and one hand to lift this TV. Not to mention it's only about four inches thick. A sixteen inch wide by twelve inch deep shelf holds it quite nicely.
The image is excellent for its size, and the color rendition and detail are excellent for the average size room. It's not a hard TV to get used to using (it's HDMI - on a HD Digital cable box) and puts out a magnificent picture. The HD cable feeds show detail and color that is excellent. Ben Hur was on regular cable today and the color rendition was better than any version I ever watched.
My DVD is on an "S" connector but I watched Akira Kurasawa's RAN (CHAOS) the other day and saw details that astounded me. The reds are vivid and the yellows blinding. On C-Span's Washington Journal you can see the colors of the capital building as the sun rises.
The sound is excellent right out of the TV itself. You can hear "echos" and "reverbs" when the source is good stereo. In about 6 months I will add amplifier and five channel sound speakers. I am very satisfied with this purchase. My Mother had to spend a month at my house after heart surgery and she loved watching the football games on this TV. She even joked about taking it home with her and she is NOT a TV person.

Things you should know:
1) the HDMI cable is 1/2 inch thick, sticks out the bottom, requires an adapter for most cable boxes, and obstructs the back panel that is supposed to hide the cables. Nothing will hide that cables.
2) the "surge protector/filter" is not cheap - I paid $199 for the one I use. But considering it's protecting a $1500 TV, it's worth it. My house has lousy electric and in four years surges have blown two protectors. Also HDTV needs a filter.
3) Buy good audio cables, I can hear how cheap my older audio cables are when I use the DVD and CD player - especially on orchestral and symphonic music. You don't hear the problems with broadway musicals or pop stuff on DVD and CD, but symphony orchestras and fine movie soundtracks need better cables. I have Digital Music on my cable, too. The all Opera channel is a delight to listen to now.
4) You need a digital satelite or digital cable HD feed - that requires special boxes and a service call.

5 out of 5 stars Who needs a plasma? When you have this LCD!.......2004-12-09

I am only going to say this thing is phenominal, you have to see it, to believe it! The HD picture will blow you away!

2 out of 5 stars DVD broken -- I have to pay for shipping.......2006-08-29

As several other users have posted, the DVD on this unit stopped reading DVD's within 6 weeks of purchase. Now _I_ have to remove the television from its wall mount, pack up a fragile, flat-screen television for shipping, and pay for shipping to a Toshiba. I am now crossing my fingers that they will fix it, instead of, e.g., breaking it, or doing nothing to it and sending it back to me. Had I known, I would easily have paid an extra $150 or so for a different brand.

5 out of 5 stars Toshiba 23HLV84 .......2005-12-20

Bought back in May 2005 for about 1047.00 at the time, one of the best DVD /LCD TV's I had seen. No issues with dead Pixels yet, or anything... Good sound, Very clean picture as long as you are viewing from at least 5 Feet, have it in bedroom at 8-9 feet for viewing and its better than my 50 inch Sony * DVD is a bit clunky and looks to be better than 480p + but not up in the HD higher ranges, but still much better than straight Satellite signals! I would still buy this exact TV for the same reasons _ Light weight_ great Picture, good sound_ and fits where you need it to !

2 out of 5 stars Good screen, but really bad DVD player built in........2005-03-15

I'm amazed at how many great reviews this device has, given my experience. I've just bought and returned one for work. Sure, there were people (not many) who couldn't see the problems, but I don't see how any videophile could stand looking at it (turned on and playing a DVD internally, at least).

First, the integration is really bad. Put a DVD in and it turns on (of course). It does NOT, however, switch to DVD mode. Then when you manually switch modes you have to wait for it to spin up the DVD, I guess it thinks you just put the disk in for storage or something... The few controls for settings are vague, limited, and there's a 100% disconnect between the player and the screen. Yet another example: ejecting a disk while it's off... *if* it works you have to hold down the button quite a while, it turns the TV all the way on, *then leaves it on once the disk is out*...

It's an HD screen, and I'm guessing with an HD input or DVD player with HDMI out it'd look great. That's because an HDMI out DVD player will almost certainly have some kind of 'upres' feature, whereas the built-in player appears to have none whatsoever. The image is simply crudely stretched to be big enough to fill the screen, and the result on the 23" LCD looks far worse then DVI out of a $199 player to a 50" plasma we also have here. The settings of course give you no control over this process, no way to view the image at native pixel resolution or any other tweaks that one may want.

They really spared every expense with the DVD player by the way, I have never used a DVD player so slow to respond to commands, such as selecting a chapter from the DVD menu, and when it does it usually visually screws it up, starting to start, pausing (maybe showing the menu again for a couple frames) then actually starting, etc.

Finally, there is a warning included INSIDE the box that the HDMI input is not for use with computers, I don't know if they screwed up the HDMI implementation or are saying that because there's no pixel orbiter or what, but that and the fact that this is one of the only consumer electronic devices I've seen in years that is limited to 60Hz power only are yet more ways this unit disappointed me. In the end I was very relieved to be able to return it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent LCD Combo TV.......2004-12-13

What a great set - perfect and bright. Having the side slot progressive DVD player is a great combination - if you're using this in a tight spot such as in a media cabinet, it's good to have the TV on a swivel base. It replaced an all-in-one 20" tube SDTV and it's got many features over and above what we expected.

The 16:9 screen image with scaling for normal 4:3 SDTV is very clear, bright and sharp. DVD movies play without a problem and teh player is forgiving: DVDs that don't play on an older Toshibal dual deck DVD/VHS (scratches) play on this TV. And it plays VCDs, whihc is a bonus for our home movies that we've burned to CD in MPEG1.

The additional bonus of so many inputs is tremendous, allowing us to connect a ReplayTV, Xbox with room to spare. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars WOW! I am in love.......2004-10-09

I got this today and am in love. What a great set! The progressive DVD on the side is a nice space saving touch, but this set is awesome for two reasons, picture and aesthetics of the cabinet. I also love the carrying handle in the back. I bought the optional wall bracket, but since we are now considering putting in place of our older 35" 4:3 analog, I haven't mounted it yet, but am using it on the stand little stand that comes with the set. It is completely inoobtrusive, exactly what I had in mind, all about the picture, looks like a piece of art.

I was concerned that after watching an older 35" 4x3 analog set and going to a 23" 16:9 the image would seem tiny to to me, but I realized that the viewing area on the old 35" 4:3 for movies on DVD is not really any larger when you consider the black bars, so I am losing nothing, and gaining in space and image quality.

The set has an HDMI connection, which I have yet to try, as I don't have any components with this capability, but since I plan to get a DVR with this, I wanted to have it. I can say that one of the faults of the 9 year old Hitachi 35" that I had was that it only had one "S" connection, and although that was "State of the Art" at the time, it was quickly not enough to accomodate my needs as I acquired new products like a DVD and home theater.

Anyway, I highly recommend this, I was incredibly impressed with the out of the box performance and the great contrast, and think that this will be a best seller for Toshiba.
