Sharp's LC-32D40U high-definition LCD HDTV proves you don't have to sacrifice style for technology. This gorgeous 32-inch set features a strikingly shiny piano black cabinet that will become an elegant centerpiece to any room. It also features the latest Sharp screen and video processing innovations, as well as an integrated HDTV tuner, a space-saving design with bottom-mounted speakers, included stand, pure digital audio/video connectivity with two HDMI inputs, and a rapid-fire response time of 6 ms (milliseconds)--perfect for watching fast-action sports and movies.

This set features Sharp's proprietary Advanced Super View (ASV) LCD panel technology, which uses an enhanced color filter that permits more light throughput. This increases the contrast ratio by 150 percent to 1200:1 for pure whites, deep blacks, and a higher range of colors. Sharp's Quick Shoot video circuitry provides an ultra-fast pixel response time of 6 ms, which helps to ensure excellent detail and smooth motion during high-speed scene transitions. The screen also offers a low-reflection coating to reduce the effect of sunlight and interior lighting to provide vivid large-screen pictures wherever you install your LCD television.

The built-in ATSC tuner pulls HD signals right from the airwaves, and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. The screen delivers a true 1366 x 768-pixel HDTV resolution, and it also features a wide 176-degree viewing angle and 450 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating--perfect for viewing colorful details in even direct sunlight.

You'll enjoy enveloping audio from the set's built-in 20-watt bottom-mounted stereo speakers (10 watts per channel), which can also produce virtual Dolby surround sound. It provides the following connection options:

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Stay FAR Away!.......2007-06-14

To sum it up, buying this LCD has been one of the worst shopping experiences of my life.

I have been wowed by Sharp's extremely good picture quality and value in the past; so, I finally decided to give in and buy a "name brand" LCD after reading stellar reviews on this particular model of LCD.

The television came and I couldnt have been more excited about the beautiful packaging and the beautiful design of the television. It really is a beautiful television and I was very excited to see how it compared to my Olevia LCD that I've had for roughly two years.

I hooked my Xbox 360 up via component inputs, and the excitment died. The colors were dull, red push completely apalling, and the television exhibited artifacts and jaggies even in the Xbox 360's dashboard menu. I tried calibration with DVDs for the better part of an hour just while staying in the dashboard, and then I tried a game. Not only did reds STILL look pink, but the colors were dull and there were MAJOR ghosting issues. Ghosting was so bad I couldn't even play games; they made me sick. Buyer's remorse began to set in. DVDs and even such "action packed" channels such as PBS also exhibited these ghosting issues; people's faces would literally trail across the screen. My two year old Olevia had significantly better picture quality, color accuracy, and no ghosting either!

So, naturally, I went online to discover many people were having the exact same issues. Not only this, but this television is built by Orion in Thailand; the same brand that makes insignia brand products. This also made me feel cheated. I shouldn't be paying premium prices for a budget brand LCD!

I soon contacted Sharp customer support; and the nightmare began. Simply put, Sharp customer service is by far the worst I've EVER had to deal with in my life. I've worked in customer service for six years and I couldn't believe the things that Sharp does to customers. After being lied to, calling dozens of times, and flat out arguing with customer service; they finally decided to repair my television after a month or two of trying to avoid the issue. After roughly two months, I was finally able to drop off my television at a Sharp authorized service center. A month passed, and I was calling the service center just about three times a week. After THREE months of having no television and not even getting any use of this LCD, Sharp and my service center told me there WERE NO PROBLEMS with this television. Sharp basically admitted to me that they sell an inferior product and the service manager at my repair center said these Sharp were a piece of junk (which reaffirmed my beliefs).

I no longer have the television; after three months of bickering with Sharp I concluded I no longer wanted to deal with the stress or frankly, spend any more of my time. I wish Sharp would reimburse me for the hours I spent on the phone with them.

All I can do is to recommend people stay far away from this product, and possibly even Sharp in general. Which is unfortunate, because they did/do have some great products. That being said, I will likely NEVER buy a Sharp product again.

5 out of 5 stars Nearly perfect.......2007-05-18

I can't claim technical knowledge of the variety of LCD TV's but I can say this: I did a lot of looking around before deciding on this TV, and I'm totally thrilled with my choice. I've watched my friends' flat-screens and none, in my opinion, delivers as crisp and clean and easy-to-watch picture as this one. Two HDMI inputs are a real plus. I'm a little disappointed that there's no easy way to connect a computer to the screen (though I've managed to do this with a DVI->HDMI cable). A near-perfect TV in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Great Picture, 1 missing feature, 1 side effect.......2007-04-09

Overall this TV has a great picture and sound. We use it for OTA HD broadcasts and my original intent was to hook it up to a Media Center PC. I did get this to work with an DVI - HDMI cable, but the problem (missing feature)is this model was not intended to be hooked up to a PC. (The D41U, D42U D43U and D50U all are) At 1280x720 (720p) the screen looks good with the exception of all the edges are missing/off-screen. So I can't see the time in the bottom right, and most of the start button is missing on the bottom left, the X is missing from a maximized program in the top Right, etc... The Media center interface doesn't really care, since you use a remote and navigate around just fine, but checking email is a bit of a challenge.
The only side effect is the back-light feature (which I wanted to turn down in a dim bedroom) causes a humming noise when set to 10 or less. I called sharp support and their suggestion was to adjust the brightness to offset needing to have the backlight up to 11+.

1 out of 5 stars Died an early death........2007-04-08

We bought this TV after reading glowing reviews only to find out that the picture quality is poor when viewed from slight angles. Also, after 13 months of use ours has now died. Sound works but picture is gone. Cycling power on/off might bring back a partial picture for a few minutes but then it is gone again. Another expensive lesson.

4 out of 5 stars Not immediately impressed...........2007-04-05

I must admit that at first I was not thrilled with the picture quality. Going from a standard 27" television to an LCD I was expecting a lot. However, once I hooked the Sharp Aquos up to an HD cable box the picture quality was dramatically improved. The TV arrived in a very timely manner and in good condition, thanks UPS. Set-up was easy and while I am still deciding on the various settings to stick with, operating the TV is a breeze. I am very pleased with my new Sharp Aquos television and feel it is an exceptional value for the price.

You'll enjoy 480p, 720p and 1080i high-definition viewing right out of the box thanks to the built-in digital ATSC tuner, which pulls HD signals right from the airwaves. The LCT3285TA has a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, 176-degree wide viewing angle, and a super-fast 8ms (millisecond) response time, which minimizes blurring of moving images and is especially helpful for sports and action movies. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS TV!! IT blew up in flames!.......2007-05-17

I bought this tv about 1 year ago and thought it was a good deal for the money, the picture its great with satellite tv, although it did have some sound issues.
The other day My 2 year was watching a video and all of a sudden we heard a huge pop saw flames in the back, and then it started smoking and burning. I called customer svc to complain, a supervisor called back the next to apologize and they said they would send a brand new tv, but i am still waiting.

    1 out of 5 stars i hate magnavox.......2007-04-03

i get the tv, it breaks and i feel like killing myself. thats about it. buy a samsung or something that has more than a 3 month warrenty. also, tons of repair places next to where i live dropped the mag. account because it was causing them too much money repairing all their crappy products for the warrenty. i hate magnavox.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all!.......2007-03-16

At first, I was unhappy. I couldn't get the Autoprogram to work (just about the only annoying feature on it). Once I finally got Autoprogram and satellite TV to work, the picture was really grainy. I was so disappointed. I was ready to send it back.

For some reason, the picture got better after the first day (go figure). I felt like a complete idiot after I opened the manual and found directions to hook everything up RIGHT THERE- duh!!

To me, the remote is fairly intuitive and thankfully uncomplicated. The only thing harder to figure out was the View button and that button with the check mark. Once again, after reading the simple directions, I learned quickly what they were for.

Most manuals are hard to follow or not easy to read. I think that affects why most people will resist reading the one for this TV; however, it's a simple read and it'll save you a lot of grief.

I got it for less than $700- more than I want to spend to sit in front a box but far less than you would spend for a picture this quality. I've looked around for a while and one of the only other TV's this crisp was the 26 inch Magnavox that sold for just a few bucks less. Other good TVs were at least $200+ more, so this TV is a good deal.

I was enthralled to learn that you can download upgrades for this TV on the manufacturer's website. You plug a memory stick into your PC. Download the upgrade to the stick. Plug the stick into the USB slot on the TV. Follow the directions for the upgrade and the TV's upgraded.

From what I hear, the newest Magnavox LCD TVs have only minor difference from later models. Doing upgrades might save you from upgrading to a newer model if internet upgrades are performed every few months or so.

NOTE: You can't stop the upgrade or remove the memory stick during the upgrade.

Once you learn its "system", this TV is easy and it looks great. Read the manual!

5 out of 5 stars great TV, Great rpice.......2007-03-06

I bought this TV about a month ago. I also bought the 3 year extended warranty. I love this TV. I read some of the negative reviews and while those users may have had problems, I don't think it is indictitive of the overall product quality. You get lemon's in all products (ask me about my Ford Mini-Van). But, I digress, I bought this TV to replace an old tube TV that crapped out on me after 6 years (RCA). To replace it with a another TUBE TV was going to be around $500+ and this one was $699. I am glad I spent the extra cash for this TV.

The picture is amazing, and I have Comcast Cable and they have many HD stations and WOW WOW. I did a comparision for a regular Jay Leno versus a HD Jay Leno.......the colors and the clarity was like night and day. My DVD's look better even though it is just a regular DVD player.

My kids hooked up there XBOX360 via the HD option of the XBOX.....drop dead amazing. The games take on another life. I am not into Video games but I was floored watching my kids play it.

Bottomline: if you are looking for a started HDTV, you can't go wrong with this one...especially for the price.

    5 out of 5 stars magnovox lcd 32 inch.......2007-01-28

i don't know what lies in the future, but this tv is great. good picture, good price, great price. the part where it fills in the hd and movie to full screen is tops.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Distinctively designed for an attractive centerpiece to any room, the 32-inch Sharp LC32SH20U LCD HDTV will also provide exceptional HDTV and home theater entertainment for years to come, thanks to its 60,000-hour long life screen. You'll enjoy highly detailed colors and amazing depth of picture as well as appreciate its slim footprint. It has a built-in ATSC tuner that pulls HD signals right from the airwaves (via an optional antenna), and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. It comes with its own tabletop stand, and it can also be wall-mounted via optional hardware.

This set features a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution for a true 16:9 aspect ratio--perfect for watching your favorite widescreen movies in the format they were intended. It has a high 450 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating, which provides a vivid picture even when placed near windows, doors, or other light sources. It also offers a 170-degree viewing angle so everyone in the room can enjoy the picture, a 12 ms (millisecond) response time (which helps fast moving video not appear jaggy), and an 800:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.)

It has two bottom-mounted stereo speakers that produce 10 watts of total audio power (5 watts per channel). Other connection options include:

5 out of 5 stars Great Value / Excellent Picture.......2006-12-13

This TV is an exceptional value. Just received this yesterday from B&H and am very pleased. The picture (especially sports) is supprisingly good with very little blur, concisidering the contrast ratio and other specs are slightly below many higher end models. Using the component cables, DVDs look to be fantastic, I played Star Wars Episode III and really enjoyed the sound quality and pucture. The remote is easy to use, menus are easy to follow and the set-up was a breeze. I'm please with the purchase- The stand quality is high and the input jacks are firm. I don't have a lot of usage experience but based on value, picture quality, sound and harware quality would give this TV a 5/5.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality, poor service.......2006-09-30

I bought a sharp lcd tv from j& r in new york last Jan, after a year and half, when powering on the tv, sometimes works, sometimes not. after unplug in, wait for a while and plug back, worked for a couple months. Send it to service center to checkup, was told that the lcd control board needs to be replaced. when request to get back the replaced lcd control board, was told that sharp does not give back the replaced board, it has to be shipped back, otherwise, you have to pay additional fee to get back the replaced board.. it's rather strange to hear such a lousy policy from any vendor..

But, if you do want to get a sharp, better get a long long warranty..

4 out of 5 stars EASY TO SET UP, VIVID COLORS, CLEAR PICTURE ON HD CHANNELS!.......2006-09-01

First, let me share my experience. I wanted an HDTV, and FLAT panel LCD, not a plasma TV. However, I knew little or nothing about the LCD HD's. After thinking about buying one for months and looking at them in the stores, I asked the salesman which was the most simple one to set up and use. He suggested the Sharp. Since I liked the picture, I bought the Sharp. First, I had this connected to CABLE and a special HD box and I did not like the reception on the cable hookup. Then, I switched to satelite service, and quit my cable company. What a differnce in the picture, night and day difference, now I am in love with this TV! This picture is STUNNING and SUPERB. I see clarity and colors I never saw in my old analog JVC (and this was the best TV I ever owned until now). The picture quality and colors on this TV are breathtaking. I really enjoy the set and I love watching my DVD movies, HD tv shows and even local shows on it. Just to let you know, it does take time to get used to the picture and color vividness on the HDTV, but as you watch it more, you will not want to go back to the old tube type analog TV. The most important thing I learned is for a fuller screen is to put this on the ZOOM view. This way you do not lose so much picture. The Sharp book has been alot of help and also I went to Google and looked up all I can now about HDTV and am learning as I go. All in all, my eyes are happy now when I am viewing this TV! Sharp is a great TV!

3 out of 5 stars Don't think this is an Aquos TV.......2006-06-19

Researched quite a bit and found that this TV is *NOT* marketed by Sharp as an Aquos. Apparently they now have a perhaps lesser-quality line LCD-TV, and this TV is not an Aquos. Notified Amazon of this too.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome TV.......2006-06-14

Ok, I have been looking for a flat TV for a few weeks now and I finally found it. This sharp is a great TV. It has a stunning picture, good sound, and nice features. The picture when hooked up to HD cable is crystal clear. Not a bunch of pixels like you see on some TV's. It also has rich vivid colors. Ths sound is good, but better with surround hooked up. It does have SRS and WOW effect and other things to help it out.It also has different picture modes like movies,sports....etc. and different temp. changes like warm, medium, cool. I did a little research and found that sharp makes some of the best TV's. So if your looking for a great TV check out the sharp it really is a great TV, and the price wasn't too bad either........Oh and remember this an HDTV and like any other HDTV it only looks stunning with HD cable =)

    Amazon.com Product Description

Sharp's LC32D41U high-definition LCD HDTV proves you don't have to sacrifice style for technology. This gorgeous 32-inch set features a strikingly shiny piano black cabinet that will become an elegant centerpiece to any room. It also features the latest Sharp screen and video processing innovations, as well as an integrated HDTV tuner, a space-saving design with bottom-mounted speakers, included stand, and a rapid-fire response time of 6 ms (milliseconds)--perfect for watching fast-action sports and movies. The LC32D41U also offers pure digital audio/video connectivity with two HDMI inputs as well as one DVI connection--great for viewing your PC through the set.

DVI (Digital Video Interface) provides an uncompressed transfer of high definition video from a digital video source (such as a cable/satellite set-top box or PC) to a digital display device. Unlike HDMI, it delivers only video--you will need a separate RCA or digital cable for delivering audio.

    5 out of 5 stars I Am Completely Satisfied........2007-01-23

I've had this TV for a few months now, and it's performance has been flawless. The picture is gorgeous. (NB: Change the "mode" to standard instead of dynamic, which is the garish factory setting.) The 6ms response time means no blurring. Not a single bad pixel.

My usual picture, which I receive through Dish Network satellite, is very good, but I got an extra bonus that I didn't expect. I stuck an old rabbit ears and bow tie antenna to the antenna jack just for laughs, and lo and behold, I now receive fabulous High Definition broadcasts from all the local stations. This was totally unexpected, because I barely got standard TV signals (thus, the satellite). Caution: Most of the source material isn't recorded in high-def, even though it's a "high-def broadcast". But when you have a real high-def picture, believe me, you'll notice the difference! Watching sports in high-def is a revelation.

Final advantage: HDMI jacks for the best possible connection to your DVD player, etc. Highly recommended.

    1 out of 5 stars DOA.......2006-12-18

We ordered this TV on November 18th. Out of the box it displayed nothing but brightly colored lights. We tried to resolve the issue, calling customer service and checking on-line help etc. After days and days of frustration with customer service, they insisted we send them digital photos of what the TV display looked like, I guess they didnt believe what we were telling them. We sent pictures, and after we nagged them relentlessly for several MORE days they agreed to have the TV serviced. Several days after that a local TV repair shop called to make an appointment, and we assumed they would actually fix the TV since we were also told a board would be sent to them. All they did was take the TV back to their shop, they'll be in touch in a "few days". Here it is a month later and we still dont have a working TV. What a disappointment all the way around.

    4 out of 5 stars AQUOS 32D41U.......2006-11-07

Color, sound, looks all fine. Found the manual to be overly complicated. Still dont know if stereo sound is working as the indicator keeps changing from mono to stereo. Also, cant tell if HD is working as the regular picture is so much better than the set it replaced. This could be a provider problem.

    5 out of 5 stars Sharp LC-32D41U initial impression.......2006-10-23

The Sharp LC-32D41U is an impressive display for about a grand. Many LCDs in this price range exibit poor video processing (video noise & edge enhancements), and poor de-interlacing (picture softening during motion). The LC-32D41U does not have these problems. Feed it a high quality source (HD DVD, Blu-ray) and you'll be rewarded with a beautiful picture.

As with most TVs these days, the default video settings are a bit cartoon-ish (over-bright, over-saturated colors, and over-aggressive sharpness). The pleasant surprise is how accurate a picture this set can provide for folks who are willing to do a bit of picture tweaking. For those who don't wish to spend time experimenting with a calibration DVD, try the following settings in the Picture menu: OPC OFF, Backlight -16, Contrast +30, Brightness +8, Color -22, Tint 0, Sharpness -9. In the Advanced Picture sub-menu: Color Temp Mid-High, Black Off, Monochrome Off, Film Mode On. Feed this set a hi def (1080i) signal via HDMI if you can.

A drawback to this set is that the black-level cannot be adjusted to be completely black, even with the Backlight adjustment all the way down. (This is typical for LCDs.) Also, the sound quality from the built-in speakers is mediocre. A home theater surround sound system would be a welcome addition to this set. Aside from that, there's not much to complain about. Anyone looking for a reasonably priced flat panel TV should take a close look at Sharp's D41 series sets.

4 out of 5 stars Mine works fine and was purchased from a reliable dealer...........2006-10-02

This is the first LCD television I have purchased. Like most, my familiarity with LCD's has been with computer monitors (Apple, in our case). Our other televison, which I would describe as the primary viewing unit, is 42 inches with 1080i cable and 720 DVD. As such, it provides a good basis for comparison. BTW: this set will be used in a "media" room, where I keep the stereo gear; sort of a second TV.

First, with any relatively complex technology, purchase from a reputable dealer. While I did pay more (over 10%) than "mail order", the advice was top notch and there is a 30 day return policy; no questions asked.

Second, when you view (side by side) units in a store, make sure the source material is similar to what you will utilize. If you do not have 1080 digital and you make your selection with only that programing, you will be mightily disappointed. Take a DVD that you are familiar with and have the dealer play it. This will give you a good basis for evaluation.

In our case, it was appropriate to compare with 1080 and normal analog signal. As such my utterly subjective analysis is:

    -The Sony Bravia (XBR) was, as it should be, excellent; however, there was no discernable difference meriting another $800.00;

-The Samsung was also quite nice; but, again, very similar to the Sharp and Toshiba; also, it was a few hundred dollars more.

-The Toshiba and Sharp were, based upon my observations (yours may differ) identical, with a negligible difference in image quality compared to the Sony and Samsung. All sets were the most recent models, some with build dates in July. (Curiously, the Panasonic was inferior to the other four.)

Why, then, purchase the Sharp? Glad you asked:

-It was the least expensive of the four I was considering. I usually do not look for bargains in electronic gear; however, if the quality is the same, money is still money.

-6 ms rate; this may be irrelevant, but to my PS2 (soon to be PS3) colleagues, it sure is a neat conversation piece ("What does your set do? Only 8 ms? You poor sloth").

-Excellent accessibility to component plugs and jacks, and a goodly number of them.

-The salesman, from whom I have purchased a number of toys, gave it his thumbs up (it is nice to know that Eric has thumbs).

My initial reactions are that this is a first rate piece of electronics that will do the job very nicely. It is quite likely that several other brands would have performed just as well. Much of the nuanced talk of subtle differences in LCD's (particularly the nature of the manufacturing process) is worthless jargon; trust your eyes and, if you are lucky to run into an intelligent and well meaning dealer/saleman, trust his/her opinion, as well. They do spend most of their waking hours ruining their retinas on these things.

One bit of advice: when in doubt, go larger. The 32, viewed from about 9-10 feet is very impressive. A 37 or 40 would be more impressive, still. If I was to do it over, that would be my only alteration. The $400-$600 difference is worth it. However, if you are on a budget, do not shy away from the 32; but, if you are able, spring for the larger unit.
