Get the sharpest and clearest images possible from HD and standard TV and your favorite DVD movies with the 56-inch Toshiba 56HM195 DLP rear-projection television, which offers both 1080p and 720p progressive resolution. As 720p is rated as high-definition, Toshiba has dubbed this TheaterWide TV XHD--2X Resolution, as its 1080p rating has twice the pixel count of 720. This set is loaded with the latest in video and audio processing technology as well as loaded with a wide variety of connectivity options, including Firewire and a multi-format memory card slot.

DLP (which stands for Digital Light Processing) uses an optical semiconductor to recreate source material with a fidelity analog systems can't match. While other technologies lose a certain amount of light in transit, the microscopic mirrors in a DLP projection system bring more light from lamp to screen. It also features better color uniformity over time--no burn-in, screen aging or color-shifting possible. It's the leading display technology for products like small portable conference room projectors and professional venue entertainment systems.

The technology at the center of the 62HM95 is the new Toshiba Digital Light Engine named Talen X, which utilizes Texas Instruments' xHD4 chip, advanced optics, and Toshiba's DEEP Picture and Xtreme BLAC technologies to provide high resolution with improved brightness and contrast. It also includes the new PixelPure AT Digital Video Processing, utilizing new Adaptive Technology to create further improved picture quality, the new Radiance 150 Hi-Bright Lamp for noticeably brighter images and a TheaterFine DFP Screen with anti-glare coating that results in increased detail and noticeably deeper blacks.

A 3D Y/C comb filter (4 MB, 10-bit with Vertical Contour Correction) further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). The CableClear feature utilizes the Digital 3D/YC Comb Filter to compare frames and determine the existence and extent of video noise. It then applies the needed amount of digital video noise reduction, and the appropriate sharpness adjustment to keep the picture clear. This feature now works on RF, composite and S-Video inputs, and can be selected by input.

The HD Dynamic Contrast feature increases contrast and color saturation to create deep, rich images. The intelligent circuitry analyzes both the dark and bright areas of the picture, and separately optimizes the dynamic range in each area of the picture. Toshiba's PixelPure AT (Adaptive Technology) includes Motion Adaptive De-Interlacing, Adaptive MPEG Processing, Adaptive Contrast Enhancement, and Adaptive Color Enhancement--all critical elements to deliver a consistently high quality picture.

With the integrated ATSC tuner, you'll be able to receive off-air high definition broadcasts without the need for an external set-top box. It also features a digital cable tuner (QAM), which allows for the reception of digital cable signals that are not scrambled. It also incorporates a CableCard slot for optional card, which can pick up HD (ATSC) broadcasts from your digital cable provider (digital cable subscription required). The integrated TV Guide on-screen guide provides an easy to read listing of the television programs available to view or record. It includes an 8-day program listing, the ability to perform keyword searches for locating favorite programs, and the G-Link IR Blaster for controlling cable boxes.

The speakers provide a total of 20 watts of power (20 watts per channel). The SRS WOW virtual surround sound system provides amazing, enveloping sound through just the two built-in speakers. It also provides MTS stereo/SAP with dbx. The StableSound feature eliminates the annoyance of normal program volume being followed immediately by extremely loud commercial messages or drastic volume fluctuations while changing channels.

It offers the following connection options:

The OmniViewer memory card slot accepts five different types of memory cards, including SD (Secure Digital), MM (Multi-Media), MS (Memory Stick), CF (Compact Flash), and SM (Smart Media). In addition, it includes a JPEG Viewer program that allows the TV to display pictures from most digital cameras, which can be rotated and viewed in an automatic presentation format.

Convenience features include color temperature control, closed captioning on mute, sleep timer, tri-lingual on-screen display, V-Chip parental controls, video input labelling, channel labeling, and Toshiba's GameTimer feature, which allows parents to set the television to shut off after a specified period of time and stay off until a lockout key code is entered.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2007-05-25

What you have heard is true, this isn't a TRUE 1080P HD television. It DOES upscale to 1080p and I'm telling you, you WON'T SEE THE DIFFERENCE. 1080i sets can still show "ghosting". This set has NO GHOSTING. This TV has a LOT of bells and whistels, including dual HDMI ports, Optical out and internal HDTV Tuner(No need for an adapter). The HD tuner picks up signal GREAT and when you get the HD channels, you CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE FROM CABLE. IT looks just as crips over the air as it does through HD cable. Very bright picture and even some standard def pictures look AMAZING.. I wish it had some indication of upscaling the pictures so you would know when it's happening....But if you know what to look for, you know it's upscaling....

Cons: The fan runs all the time, even when it's off and it takes a while(about 12-20 seconds) for the picture to warm up... Also, I had MAJOR problems when recieving it. Got if for under $1000, so I didn't compalin too much but it took OVER A MONTH for the problem to get resolved by Toshiba. Their customer support isn't TOO great...

But overall this is a GREAT BUY..cant' beat the quality for the price.

3 out of 5 stars Pleased but with problems.......2006-11-12

I bought this tv just 2 1/2 months ago and was really pleased with it until we heard a loud popping noise and the screen went black. Come to find out, the lamp blew. We had only watched it for maybe 500 hours. When I called Toshiba they said they would get a new lamp out and would take 3-5 business days. They sent it FedEx and it never arrived. So now I've been without my tv for over a week now and have to wait while Toshiba does an investigation into FedEx.

Overall, we have been happy with this tv. It has a beautiful picture, especially the cartoons that my kids watch on it and we haven't even hooked up the HD yet. But I would recommend buying the extended bulb warranty if you buy this tv. On the other hand though, I have just been reading other reviews on this tv and saw 3 reviews that said their lamp bulb blew out in a short time. So, I would ask Toshiba about this before buying one to see if it is some kind of defect or something. I plan to call them back and make sure that this won't happen to us again in another 2 months. Had I known about this bulb problem, I probably would of looked at another brand to buy.

3 out of 5 stars NOT 1080P.......2006-11-04

If you are looking for a "Real" 1080P television, keep looking. This is not it. I have an XBOX 360 and they just completed an upgrade that enables the 360 to output in 1080P. The television will not except the signal at 1080P and automatically shifts the 360 back to 1080i. I too had the lamp blow at less than 3 months and they did replace it for free, but still a hassel. It does have a great picture, but I bought it for a 1080P not 1080i. I already had a 1080i.

2 out of 5 stars 1080p for suckers........2006-09-17

I bought this TV at the end of June 2006. Immediately, I noticed problems with it...

1. Occasionally, when turning on the TV and cable box at the same time (coming through component video), the picture will be completely messed up. The picture will be split and repeated 6 times, the colors will be almost entirely pink and purple, and the picture will scroll horizontally.

2. When first starting the TV, for the first 10-15 minutes, a dark flickering pattern cycles sporadically through the picture, located towards the center and top of the picture. This flickering is most noticeable on a picture that is brightly colored.

3. On the pictures displayed both component inputs, I am able to see faint horizontal noise/interference lines. This noise is always evident, but is most easy to spot on darker (but not completely black) pictures.

I contacted Toshiba, which then directed me to a local authorized repair center. They gave me the incorrect number to this shop (it is listed improperly on their website as well) and it turned out that the shop is no longer servicing Toshibas. I then looked up another local shop on my own. Upon calling that shop, the person I talked to own the phone suggested that something might be wrong with the digital board so I scheduled an in-home appointment.

When the technician arrived, he:

1. Told me the way to solve problem one listed above is to not turn on the TV and cable box at the same time. Sorry. That treats the symptom, but it doesn't solve the problem.

2. Completely ignored the flickering pattern.

3. Simultaneously told me that he couldn't see a noise pattern AND that it was caused by something external (not the TV). He "confirmed" this by hooking up a signal generator which "proved" that that it was my cable box and XBox 360 that are BOTH bad. I could still see the noise through his signal generator.

4. Proceeded to tell me that component video is a digital signal.

At that point, I gave up hope that this guy could help me.

Finally, on September 16, 2006 (less than 3 months owning this TV), the bulb blew up. I'm not sure if the bulb blowing is the a symptom or a cause of the other issues (or if it's related at all), but it is still frustrating. The bulb is supposed to be rated for 6,000 hours on the high setting - I doubt I even approached 1,000 hours.

Update (11/5/2006):

-As stated in the other review, I have since come to learn that this is NOT a true 1080p TV! The maximum accepted resolution to either the component or HDMI inputs is 1080i.
-I have also read multiple accounts of people having issues with the fan noise and inteference. There is even speculation that a faulty fan could be putting out an RF interference signal, thus causing both of my current problems with the TV.
-Finally, Toshiba's customer service is inept - they do not seem to know their products. It has taken me 3 calls and 1 e-mail to finally get a clear response that tells me that this TV does not accept 1080p inputs.

Bottom line: I strongly caution you against purchasing this TV especially if you want a true 1080p TV.

5 out of 5 stars Great TV set!.......2006-09-01

I'm very impressed with the overall quality of the television. Great image and sound. DVDs play well with good color seperation. Regular cable plays fine and HDTV looks amazing. The only thing that bothers me about it is that the light indicating the TV is on is a bright blue light that can be distracting. However, there's no better deal for a great HD TV around.
