Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description
Perfect for doing double duty as a PC monitor and a home-theater centerpiece, Zenith's P42W34 offers a 42-inch widescreen plasma display with a stunning 1,200:1 contrast ratio and daylight-rivaling 1,000 cd/m2 brightness. This is an EDTV monitor, which means it's a step closer to high-definition (HDTV) than standard TVs. When used with a progressive-scan DVD player (or 480p-output DTV set-top box) you'll get seamless, razor-sharp images from your favorite movies and concert videos.

A plasma display offers wider viewing angles than an LCD screen, giving you considerable freedom in placing it. You can put it right between favorite stereo loudspeakers, even if those speakers lack magnetic shielding: flat-panel screens are impervious to magnetic distortion. The P42W34's screen offers 852 x 480p resolution for an extremely detailed image. RS-232 controls as well as high-definition DVI (with HDCP copy protection), NTSC (composite-video, S-video, and high-definition component-video), and PC RGB (15-pin type-D connector for VGA, SVGA, XGA, or SXGA) inputs ensure the P42W34's compatibility with DTV set-top boxes, DVD players, VCRs, computers, and additional video sources.

Other features include aspect-ratio correction (intelligent resizing of video and computer images to 16:9 widescreen or conventional 4:3 aspect ratio) and Intelligent Image Scaling, which employs a Faroudja DCDi de-interlacer to seamlessly translate TV video data to PC formats without distortion. Speakers are not included, but the unit offers an onboard 10-watts-per-channel stereo amplifier and speaker jacks should you wish to connect an optional set like the Zenith P42WSPL.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Using groundbreaking display technology, Zenith's 42-inch P42W34H high-altitude plasma EDTV delivers superior image clarity, color, and brightness in a panel that's less than 4 inches thick. An extremely high contrast ratio of 1200:1, brightness measuring 1000 cd/m2, and a wide 160-degree view angle mean this display offers vivid viewing from just about any seat. A thicker display than standard plasmas and other internal components enable this TV for use in high-altitude locations.

The unit's widescreen (16:9) dimensions are perfect for watching DVDs and widescreen TV broadcasts in their native aspect ratios (viewing TV broadcasts requires an external TV tuner such as a VCR and an HDTV decoder). The P42W34H also sports DVI and RGB connections for use as a giant monitor for your computer. Flexible picture-in-picture lets you watch one program in a small window while viewing another. The P42W34H features intelligent image scaling, using a Rembrandt (O-Plus) scan converter that seamlessly converts TV video data to PC formats without distortion or cropping of images in either 4:3 or 16:9 formats, and also lets you zoom in with its advanced zoom capabilities.

The display uses both progressive scan and Faroudja DCDi deinterlacing to produce a high-quality image. It packs a native resolution of 852 x 480p, and can accept NTSC, HD, VGA, SVGA, XGA, and SXGA input signals.

A set of 20-watt (10 watts per channel) speakers are available as optional accessories, or you can connect the unit to your existing audio system. The P42W34H features an audio volume leveler to avoid those loud moments, Closed Captioning when mute is activated, and gradual volume increase for more pleasant transitions from mute. In addition, the unit's lack of a fan ensures noise-free operation. It can play SAP (secondary audio program) audio, when available. The P42W34H features a remote control with onscreen equalizer, multilingual menus, and a sleep timer.

A single panel of AV inputs, which Zenith calls the "Jack Pack," lets you connect the display to such inputs as a DVD player, VCR, video game console, or a PC or Macintosh computer. The Jack Pack features high-resolution component-video inputs, S-Video in, composite-video in, and for connection to a computer, both an RGB (15-pin Type-D) input and a DVI (Digital Video Interface) jack with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) copy protection. Also included are two audio inputs--left and right RCA jacks and 1 phone plug connector--as well as left/right audio out and an RS-232c serial port for connecting external controls.

An optional wall mount or cabinet stand are available, and the unit features a built-in shock-absorbing glass damper.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Zenith POS.......2006-01-11

Thankfully, we chose a different model the day we and another couple were out shopping for screens for the den. However our friends chose the Zenith and have been miserable 4 repair calls and counting as last I heard. I was just bored and decided to check on the unit and found the reviews you guys left.
It sounds to me like its well past time for a Civil Suite to me, have them either do a complete refund or replacement of unit with another model. I had something similar going on with a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 Laptop which they are now making amends for. I just wish that they would not bother with a dozen options of what to do when they make the process, and just say heres your money back or a new laptop PERIOD lol. But I am old enough to know wishes are usually a waste of time that could be spent making them come true.

1 out of 5 stars Same Problem. Bright Digital Stars!!! TV was already fixed for this same problem and is doing it all over again.......2005-11-26

After about 2 months of using this 42" Plasma the entire left side of inputs failed, and all the other inputs were working with the same distiortion everyone else has stated they had, as well as, audio noise like hissing. Called Zenith and they stated they were going to send such and such company out which they did indeed do. However, when the local tv repairman came out he stated right away "Another Zenith plasma problem!!!". I went to ask was it the same type of problem with this specific tv, and he immediately stated yes, and that he had fixed 4 or 5 already before mine. He stated that everytime Zenith has told him to replace the inputs and do such and such to the video board. He further went to state he could guarantee me that he would be back again, and again for this same problem as it never seems to fix the problem permanently just for a few months. He left stating he had to wait to receive the part and would come back within the next 4-5 days. 3 weeks later he arrives back (after 3 phone calls to him, and 2 to Zenith who was refusing to pay him for a second trip which was why he never came back before and never let us know untuil we actually spoke to him ourselves) and repairs the video problem, but the audio problem persists, and he leaves to return again. He come sback just a few days later, and fixes the audio hissing. There's more...

3 months later (right now 11/25/05) Bright stars flashing across the screen no matter what input being used, and has been going on for about 4 days non-stop on DVDs, DirecTv, anything and everything has the bright digital stars flashing across the screen. NO HELP AT ALL FROM ZENITH AS OF YET FOR THE SAME TYPE OF PROBLEM YET AGAIN!!!!!!!

    1 out of 5 stars What have I done?.......2005-10-19

Compared with panasonic and went with the Zenith name as all other points were comparable. At 7 months I am experiencing digital break up when utilizing component 1 input for HD. Looks like bright stars all across screen, under warranty and seeking help, I am not sure how much I will get. Wish I would have bought the Panasonic.

1 out of 5 stars Same problem as other customer..... Do not buy!!!.......2005-03-22

I paid $2,500 for this set at Best Buy and within 8 months starting to have problems. By the 10th month total outage. Best buy is trying to get us a new set but As I can see other people have had the same problem. Buy a different brand.

1 out of 5 stars Broke after two months, still trying to get it fixed after 4.......2005-02-14

Very happy with this product for the first two months, after that inverted color vertical lines appeared and multiplied across the screen. We have been contacting Zenith for four months and still do not have a working television or refund of money. This TV was a complete waste of $2,000.00 and I would not recommend any Zenith products to anyone. Thanks to Zenith, I got to watch the Super Bowl on a 15" CRT monitor, despite investing a significant amount of money in a plasma television.
