Amazon.com Product Description
Daewoo's 42-inch widescreen plasma offering is large enough and affordable enough, relatively speaking, to make it a strong contender for any style-conscious home theater enthusiast. The DTS-42 is an EDTV (enhanced-definition television) with native 480p pixel resolution and display compatibility with standard-, enhanced- and full high-definition input sources (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i), making it perfect for use with progressive-scan DVD players, personal computers, and DTV set-top receivers alike.

With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile--the DTS-42 is a mere 3.2 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting. Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. You do, however, need to be wary of image burn-in (wherein long-held stationary images leave a permanent impression in the screen).

The DTS-42 offers 853 x 480 native pixel resolution, a stunning 1,000:1 contrast ratio, high 1,000 cd/m2 peak luminance, and broad (160 degrees, horizontal/vertical) viewing angles so everyone can enjoy the best seat in the house.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The DTS-42 also performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; reverse 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

A digital, dynamic comb filter enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). Other image enhancements include CCF (Capsulated Color Filter) technology for natural colors, a MGDI (Meta Genuine Digital Image) engine, and ISM (Image Sticking Minimization), which guards against image burn-in)

An onboard NTSC tuner lets you watch SD television right out of the box.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Terrible. Never Buy Daewoo Again!.......2006-12-28

I also bought this Daewoo DTS-42 plasma EDTV about one and a half year ago. Exactly 12 months and 2 weeks later, it started developing some vertical scan lines, and occasionally shut itself off automatically. Initially there were only 2 or 3 vertical lines but it quickly develops into more than two dozen. Warranty had expired and Daewoo don't even have a local service center. I thought the problem was due to hot weather so I put it away for half a year. A few weeks ago I tried to hook it up for another test. This time there are more than a hundred vertical scan lines. Totally useless now.

I swear I will NEVER NEVER EVER buy another DAEWOO product ever again, and will tell all people I know to do the same. I thought I bought it cheap but it was junk!

1 out of 5 stars terrible.......2006-10-29

within 14-15 months of purchase, i developed a pixel line. Daewoo noted that while this was a rare occurrence, especially for such a new set, the warranty was the warranty, and it was out of warranty (warranty period was one year). They would fix it for $500, but only warranty it for 30 days following repair. After two more months I had over 25 of these "rare" pixel lines. I finally gave in and sent it in. Now, 31 days into the 30 warranty period, the power turns off within seconds. (the unit is on an expensive surge protector, which itself is on a whole-house surge protector, and no other equipment not bearing the name "Daewoo" is malfunctioning. I will not buy again.

2 out of 5 stars Vertical Line problem after 2 years of use.......2006-07-30

I have had my Daewoo for A little over two years. I am now experiencing a problem with a vertical line that is about 2 inches thick running down the middle of the screen. It comes and goes. Mostly it is there. I purchased my TV with a Platinum Mastercard which extended my warranty of 1 year by an extra year. Unfortunately, I missed the opportunity to capitalize on that benefit by about 2 months. Now, I too, have a tv that I paid about $2000 for that is on its way out the door. Pretty sad when I consider the fact that my old picture tube tv that I owned prior to this one cost me about $300 and lasted more than 10 years. After Reading all the reviews I am leftwondering if its even worth trying to get it repaired. I checked with Daewoo customer service and there are NO service centers in my area. Im very dissapointed in my purchase and suggest anybody who may be considering a purchase of this TV to think again. From what I am reading, odds are against you enjoying this TV for very long.

1 out of 5 stars A YEAR AND A HALF AND I STILL DON'T HAVE A WORKING TELEVISION.......2006-07-25

One star is FAR TO HIGH A RATING.

I bought my television in Jan 05. Three months later the *entire* plasma panel died. I called Daewoo several times before I got a response from them (they were notorious for never calling me back). They wanted me to send it in to them for repair as there was NOONE in my local area that would work on the TV (first warning sign).

Almost *two whole months* later and numerous phone calls from me to them they finally sent me a packing box. Once I shipped it off it was 3 months later I FINALLY received my TV back from their service center... STILL BROKEN. SAME EXACT PROBLEM!

At last count I have sent my plasma to them *FOUR* times. They have YET to fix it and have now had it in their possession LONGER THAN I HAVE (it is July 23, 2006 today). I still don't have a working television.

Just this last weekend I said "forget it" and bought one of Sony's SXRD TVs. That's right. I bought a television that was almost THREE TIMES THE PRICE of this Daewoo hunk of junk solely due to the one single fact that I can TRUST Sony's customer service.

Here's the "too long; didn't read" version: AVOID LIKE THE FREAKIN' PLAGUE!

1 out of 5 stars Decent TV with awful service! Stay away from Daewoo junk!.......2006-07-03

I got this TV from CompUSA when it was on sale. A couple of good points:

Picture looks decent with standard cable. On some channels, football looks 'wierd', when the players are standing still, they are blurry/pixeled? But otherwise, a decent picture.

Speakers actually sounds decent, even though they are listed as 5 watts!

But I'm on my 3rd TV, and I was supposed to get this one replaced too, but Daewoo service has stopped returning my calls. They all had the same problem: a vertical or horizontal line appears in the screen. One of the replacements had the lines when I recieved it, and it was a refurbished unit, so I guess it was never fixed right to begin with.

Now the unit is no longer under warranty, and Daewoo refuses to fix it. When I asked for a manager to call me back, they never do.

I guess I should have bought the extended warranty from CompUSA. 14 months after purchase and I'm stuck with broken TV number 3. Thanks Daewoo!
