Amazon.com Product Description
Get the sharpest and clearest images possible from HD and standard TV and your favorite DVD movies with the 62-inch Toshiba 62HM195 DLP rear-projection television, which offers both 1080p and 720p progressive resolution. As 720p is rated as high-definition, Toshiba has dubbed this TheaterWide TV XHD--2X Resolution, as its 1080p rating has twice the pixel count of 720. This set is loaded with the latest in video and audio processing technology as well as loaded with a wide variety of connectivity options, including Firewire and a multi-format memory card slot.

DLP (which stands for Digital Light Processing) uses an optical semiconductor to recreate source material with a fidelity analog systems can't match. While other technologies lose a certain amount of light in transit, the microscopic mirrors in a DLP projection system bring more light from lamp to screen. It also features better color uniformity over time--no burn-in, screen aging or color-shifting possible. It's the leading display technology for products like small portable conference room projectors and professional venue entertainment systems.

The technology at the center of the 62HM95 is the new Toshiba Digital Light Engine named Talen X, which utilizes Texas Instruments' xHD4 chip, advanced optics, and Toshiba's DEEP Picture and Xtreme BLAC technologies to provide high resolution with improved brightness and contrast. It also includes the new PixelPure AT Digital Video Processing, utilizing new Adaptive Technology to create further improved picture quality, the new Radiance 150 Hi-Bright Lamp for noticeably brighter images and a TheaterFine DFP Screen with anti-glare coating that results in increased detail and noticeably deeper blacks.

A 3D Y/C comb filter (4 MB, 10-bit with Vertical Contour Correction) further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). The CableClear feature utilizes the Digital 3D/YC Comb Filter to compare frames and determine the existence and extent of video noise. It then applies the needed amount of digital video noise reduction, and the appropriate sharpness adjustment to keep the picture clear. This feature now works on RF, composite and S-Video inputs, and can be selected by input.

The HD Dynamic Contrast feature increases contrast and color saturation to create deep, rich images. The intelligent circuitry analyzes both the dark and bright areas of the picture, and separately optimizes the dynamic range in each area of the picture. Toshiba's PixelPure AT (Adaptive Technology) includes Motion Adaptive De-Interlacing, Adaptive MPEG Processing, Adaptive Contrast Enhancement, and Adaptive Color Enhancement--all critical elements to deliver a consistently high quality picture.

With the integrated ATSC tuner, you'll be able to receive off-air high definition broadcasts without the need for an external set-top box. It also features a digital cable tuner (QAM), which allows for the reception of digital cable signals that are not scrambled. It also incorporates a CableCard slot for optional card, which can pick up HD (ATSC) broadcasts from your digital cable provider (digital cable subscription required). The integrated TV Guide on-screen guide provides an easy to read listing of the television programs available to view or record. It includes an 8-day program listing, the ability to perform keyword searches for locating favorite programs, and the G-Link IR Blaster for controlling cable boxes.

The speakers provide a total of 20 watts of power (20 watts per channel). The SRS WOW virtual surround sound system provides amazing, enveloping sound through just the two built-in speakers. It also provides MTS stereo/SAP with dbx. The StableSound feature eliminates the annoyance of normal program volume being followed immediately by extremely loud commercial messages or drastic volume fluctuations while changing channels.

It offers the following connection options:

The OmniViewer memory card slot accepts five different types of memory cards, including SD (Secure Digital), MM (Multi-Media), MS (Memory Stick), CF (Compact Flash), and SM (Smart Media). In addition, it includes a JPEG Viewer program that allows the TV to display pictures from most digital cameras, which can be rotated and viewed in an automatic presentation format. The TheaterNet Control System simplifies the control of external components through both an IR jack and Firewire (IEEE1394) port, the latter of which can be used to transmit digital video and audio and allow for recording of HDTV.

Convenience features include color temperature control, closed captioning on mute, sleep timer, tri-lingual on-screen display, V-Chip parental controls, video input labelling, channel labeling, and Toshiba's GameTimer feature, which allows parents to set the television to shut off after a specified period of time and stay off until a lockout key code is entered.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2006-11-21

the main reason I bought this TV was the price. 1080 and 62" for about $2,200. As another reviewer stated, the bulb on my TV exploded about 1 month into use. The customer reps didn't give me much hassle about sending a new one out. I've been using the new bulb for about 6 months now with no problem.
I think the picture is great. I use a HD cable box and upconverting DVD player, both via HDMI cables. I have no problem with either yet.
2 reasons for not having 5 stars is the bulb popping, and the sound is subpar. I know it's expected to use a home reciever, but Toshiba still should have made the sound better then they did. You will have to buy a reciever with this TV. The lack of sound quality will annoy you after a month or two, like it did me.

5 out of 5 stars Third month- Its Great- No problems........2006-11-05

I love it. Cristal clear images with no problems. I have not noticed any fan noise until I am turning off the TV and it is cooling down.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing picture!.......2006-09-27

My boyfriend and I invested in one of these televisions as an alternative to going to the movie theater, and the picture is even better than at the theater! Colors are extremely vibrant and the image from our HD-upconverting DVD player is extremely sharp and lifelike. I haven't had any of the problems with bulb life and fan noise that other folks have; apparently it was a problem limited to the first run of production. I can't comment on the sound or cable TV viewing, since we use neither of these features, but for sheer picture quality at such a large size I have yet to see a comparable set.

2 out of 5 stars Six month experience with the 62HM195.......2006-09-08

I experienced tiling or pixelating of my picture from the first day I plugged it in. I thought the problem was with my cable service, but after 5 visits by the cable company and one tv service call, I discovered that I just needed a firmware upgrade. Toshiba sent me a smart digital card with the firmware upgrade and they talked me through installing it. Problem solved.
The TV guide feature that had worked, stopped working after the firmware upgrade. I contacted Toshiba and they are investigating the problem. They have been investigating the problem for over a month now. I have found out from a service representative that they only have one person that deals with all of the TV guide problems. I am waiting for that person to call me with the solution.
In the mean time, the lamp blew. First, I noticed that the picture became dim. I increased the brightness but then I heard a loud crack. That was the bulb exploding. That happened after 3 months of light use. Toshiba sent me a new one and I installed it without difficulty. No TV for a week though while I waited for the new one to arrive.
When changing channels, there is a 3-4 second delay before the channel actually changes. This makes channel surfing VERY slow. I have been going to TV guide online to find my channel line up.
I am happy with the picture in High Definition, HOWEVER, I have never owned a TV that operates with such unreliability and therefore I would not recommend that you buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid at all cost ..........2006-08-05

We bought our 62HM195 on April 1, 2006 and received it on April 14, 2006. On August 4, 2006 (not even 4 months of normal use) the lamp of the set popped.

On August 7, 2006, I reported the problem (particularly the disappearing picture and the shattering sound of glass inside the set) to Toshiba. Adding insult to injury, the customer rep by the name of "Don" insisted that I must open the back of the TV, to make sure that the problem is really the lamp, before he can send me a replacement part. Luckily, upon further inquiry it turned out that I did not have to move the humongous paperweight from the entertainment unit, because days before my wife had already contacted Toshiba to complain about the set's dimming picture and that Toshiba already agreed to send us a replacement bulb.

The TV is great when it is working. But, Toshiba's "Xtreme BLAC technologies" is overrated. It is only fine when viewing bright scenes; when viewing dark scenes, it is awful because it degrades the contrast quality of the picture.

This TV should be avoided at all cost. From our experience, "Xtreme BLAC" really means nothing more than "absolute darkness resulting from a short-lived lamp." Page 103 of the Owner's Manual estimates "The average useful service life for the lamp is approximately 8,000 hours in Low Power mode or 6,000 hours in High Bright mode." But based on the reviews of the product here at Amazon, this claim must be way overstated.

Our set has practically always been in Low Power mode, thinking that it is the best way to stretch the life out of the bulb. Our family is just an average TV user. To disclose our viewer profile, we are a family of 4. I am a lawyer and my wife is a grade school teacher, leaving us no time to watch junk programming. Our 2 kids also attend the highly gifted program of the LAUSD, so we highly discourage them to watch TV during the weekdays.
