Samsung's 55-inch HP-P5581 flat-panel plasma television is primed for high-definition viewing. The perfect centerpiece for any serious home theater, the 1,366 x 768-pixel set delivers brilliant color, high contrast, and bright images to any room. An onboard ATSC (digital TV) tuner makes the HP-P5581 ready for off-air HDTV reception right out of the box, and it's also loaded with digital-video connections: the set offers 1 each direct-digital DVI and HDMI inputs for use with compatible DTV/cable set-top receivers, and it's also CableCARD-ready, vastly simplifying your access to digital cable services, should you want one.
A built-in analog NTSC tuner, a pedestal stand, and a generous array of audio/video connections make setup a snap. Further, the set's widescreen (16:9) display is specially configured to accommodate the native aspect ratios of your favorite movies, either from DVD or from your off-air HDTV broadcasts.
With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile--the HP-P5581 is an astoundingly slim 3.6 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting (the set includes a convenient pedestal stand, or use wall-mount kit WMN4242, sold separately). Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. You do, however, need to be wary of image burn-in (wherein long-held stationary images leave a permanent impression in the screen).
Additional inputs include 1 HD component-video inputs (480p/720p/1080i) as well as 2 each composite- and S-video, and 2 RF antenna inputs: 1 for NTSC/standard-definition reception and 1 for off-air ATSC reception. Side-panel AV inputs provide easy access for gear like camcorders and gaming consoles, even after you've mounted the set on the wall. Samsung's proprietary video-enhancement technology, Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe), performs 3-D noise reduction and detail and contrast enhancement for all interlaced (non-HD) sources.
The set houses a 15-watts-per-channel audio amplifier for use with either the included, bottom-mount speakers or the speakers in your existing stereo or home theater. SRS TruSurround XT employs SRS TruSurround, TruBass virtual subwoofer effect, Dialog Clarity virtual center channel, and WOW stereo enhancement. There's also a handy subwoofer output in case you hanker for the real thing: room-shaking bass for your TV, computer, and video programs courtesy of an outboard powered subwoofer. Audio outputs also include 1 each optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs for hookup with a Dolby Digital-decoding surround receiver and multichannel speaker system.
The set's NTSC 2-tuner picture-in-picture (side-by-side, split-screen) grants convenient, simultaneous viewing of 2 TV programs or any 2 standard-definition input sources, and a fanless cooling system ensures quiet operation.
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any AV source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.
