DLP (which stands for Digital Light Processing) uses an optical semiconductor to recreate source material with a fidelity analog systems can't match. While other technologies lose a certain amount of light in transit, the microscopic mirrors in a DLP projection system bring more light from lamp to screen. It also features better color uniformity over time--no burn-in, screen aging or color-shifting possible. It's the leading display technology for products like small portable conference room projectors and professional venue entertainment systems.
This DLP set employs the latest Digital Micromirror Devices (DMD), which have switching speeds twice as fast as previous generation microdisplays and up to 1,000 times faster than competing technologies. When combined with Samsung's new Cinema Smooth 720p light engine, the result is a crisp, bright picture with deep, rich colors that are closer to film.
The HLR5667W features a widescreen picture aspect ratio (16:9; standard TVs have a 4:3 aspect ratio), which is the ideal screen format for viewing widescreen video from DVD players and the growing availability of broadcast programming off digital HDTV tuners (HD content is always widescreen), cable boxes and satellite receivers.
The HLR5667W's 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time, to reduce dramatically edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. Powered by SamsungÕs Cinema Smooth technology, the 3:2 pulldown cinema video processing feature detects and compensates film--which is shot at 24 frames per second (fps) compared with video's 30 fps rate--to video for a smooth theater-like experience at home.
The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. The Automatic Digital Format Conversion System is compatible with 1080i and 720p HDTV formats, 480p EDTV and 480i SDTV formats. This system will accept any DTV, analog TV, or XGA computer RGB input. All video signals are converted to a 16:9 wide-screen pixel count (1280 x 720) progressive display for flicker-free images.
The 30-watt stereo audio system (two 15-watt speakers) delivers ample sound for sports and movies. It features the following video and audio connections:
- AV in (RCA): 3 (1 side, 2 rear)
- S-Video In: 3 (1 side, 2 rear)
- RF In: 2
- Monitor and Sound Out (RCA): 1 rear
- Component Video Input (Smart Input): 2 rear (480i,480p,720p,1080i)
- DVI Audio In: 1 (rear)
- HDMI: 1 (rear)
- PC In (D-Sub 16-pin): 1 (rear)
- Monitor: 1 (rear)
- D-Net (IEEE): 2 Rear
- G-Link (Mini Jack): 1 rear
- POD Slot (CableCARD): 1 rear
- AnyNet (Mini Jack): 1 rear
Other features include:
- Watch two sources at once with 2-Tuner Picture-in-Picture. You can select from a small, movable, re-sizeable window in the corner of the screen, or share the screen with Side-by-Side Split Screen.
- TV Guide On Screen interactive program guide provides listings for cable-ready, cable box, digital cable and over-the-air broadcasts directly on your TV.
- Five pre-set aspect ratio modes--Normal, Wide, Panorama, Zoom 1 and Zoom 2--stretch your image to fill the screen naturally and with less distortion.
- For the times when digital cable features require a set-top box, such as Video-On-Demand, you can connect that box to a second input.
- 1-year warranty for parts and labor

Customer Reviews:
No more DLP's for me........2007-06-13
I bought this TV in July 2006. The picture quality on SD and HD is excellent. What I don't like about rear projection is the limited viewing angle.
On May 14, my TV lost video. I called Samsung and it has been 4+ weeks and I still don't have my TV. They had to replace the lamp, ballast and the DMD board. The TV is great as long as it is working but I wouldn't trust one to work for very long. I researched these for quite a while before buying and all of the reviews were good.
If I were buying today my first choice would be flat panel LCD if money was no object, but since it is with me, I would go with a plasma because I believe it is the best bang for the buck at current market prices (June, 2007). 42 inches seems to be the break point. At 42 and below LCD and plasma seem to be about the same price but plasma wins the value contest at 50 inches and above.
Tip: If you are visiting a store to look at TV's and you wear glasses (sometimes, like I do), make sure and take them.
Two Years and Still Happy!.......2007-04-19
I purchased my Samsung 56" DLP nearly two years (6/05) ago and even though I paid a higher price than other reviewers it was still a great value. It has surpassed all of my expectations. Watching Discovery HD's Planet Earth series or other similar high definition programming makes me glad I made the investment. I have not experienced any problems to date with bulb, fan, or color wheel and the tv has been on an average of 8 hours a day. Only shortcoming that appears to be on everyone's list is the non-user-friendly PIP.
BEWARE SAMSUNG DLP DESIGN FLAWS!!!.......2007-03-30
Consumers should be aware of serious design flaws which exist in Samsung DLP televisions. Cooling fans and color wheels are highly susceptible to failing. (As a non-techniocal person I should have no idea what these parts are, but alas, I bought a Samsung DLP) Expect these to fail within 1-2 years. Expect to pay approx $400 to replace the color wheel and $200 to replace the colling fan. That is, if your service technician can find them in stock anywhere. These parts are commonly in a national backorder because of the very high failure rates.
You should also expect the lamp to fail sooner than advertized. Many people need to purchase a new lamp between 1-2 years, and some more often than that. The lamp costs approx $150-$250 depending on your model, but you should be able to replace it yourself without too much difficulty. This cost will be in addition to replacement costs for the color wheel and colling fan. Please remember that these maintenance costs are recurring, and you will have to fix them again in another 1-2 years.
While I was very satisfied with the quality and performance of my DLP, my color wheel failed very early. I called tech support to report a grinding noise, and was told to "turn it off", wait 15 minutes, and turn it back on like this would fix the problem. After doing this for a while, the color wheel finally failed, actually shattered! Now I am out of warranty, and Samsung wants nothing to do with me. I have even tried ordering the part myself from two different online vendors, and they are both backordered indefinitely! It has been 6 weeks and they have no estimate for when this part will be available. Samsung cannot even give me an estimate when the supply of replacement parts is expected to meet demand. I have had my TV for 18 months, and apparently there is a national epidemic of them breaking at the same time!
I have a 42" Samsung Plasma which is a beautiful set along with a 26" CRT. Both are wonderful products, but Samsung is selling DLP LEMONS and will not stand behind them. DLP is a great bargain up front, but a maintenance NIGHTMARE! You will pay in the long run, and by the long run I mean every 2 years. If you still want to purchase a DLP television, PLEASE BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY! IT WILL SAVE YOU A TON, BUT YOU WILL STILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE CIRCUIT CITY TECH TO FIND PARTS WHICH MAY TAKE MONTHS!
I expect Samsung to abandon their design flaw riddled DLP sector, and focus on their beautiful plasma line. Expect DLP prices to drop even further, but please...LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP!
very good cost/benefit.......2006-09-24
Others have already done, well by the way, the leg work to explain the features of this very good TV set so I'll save you some time by going direct to the point. I bought this TV back in January 2006 when true 1080p sets were too expensive yet. Yes, they are still however prices have dropped and will even more towards the year end. I have had no issues with my TV which is hooked up to my Dishnetwork HD set-top box through component cables. I haven't experienced the so called rainbow effect although I frequently watch low-light movies. The PIP is handy and the number of connections is plenty. Built-in speakers do the job for day in day out news and sitcoms but I recommend to get an external system for the movie entertainment.
I've been always puzzled by the difference between what TV's specs says and what I see on the info display in regards of screen resolution. TV specs say that this set goes up to 720p max however when I watch HD channels the info display gives me 1080i. I believe the HD signal is being downscaled from 1080i or maybe I'm just a lucky guy :-)
Better than herein mentioned TV's image quality I've only seen on Sony's LCos displays. For the price I've paid versus what I'd have to I stick to my current option.
Bright, Clear, and sharp picture worth every cent it cost........2006-06-14
I've had this TV about 6 months and I'm running this with regular ol Direct TV, not the HD and I'm getting a great picture. Setup and controls are easy with tons of hookups and inputs on the back and side. Plenty of screen setting and did I mention the BRIGHT pricture. I'd say you really need to be at the very least 10' away to see the best picture as any closer you will see some pixelling with regular SAT input without the upgrade to HDMI receiver and HD service.
I do recommend that you upgrade all of your cables to the best you can afford it goes a long way to improve the picture. I can use the PIP and run my PC screen on one side and watch TV on the other. Which is handy if you are a ADHD multi-tasker like myself. But admittedly running the PC on a S-Video cable doesn't give you the same quality screen you'll get on the PC. I'm using a laptop so I have no other outputs on it. Might try the PC-IN the TV has to offer on a desktop system and see if it's any better one day but right now it's not an issue. However it is nice to play a game in 56" and game from regular gaming stations like PS2 or Gamecube look GREAT. Some have noted problems with gaming but most of game we use a slower games and I have not noticed a problem or I'm sure I would have heard about it from the short people. As I noted componant and optical cables do a lot and really do there most with DVD's. I can't say much about the sound I don't use it as I use a surround sound system as I think most people would. It a great TV have a great picture that you can see from the sides as well as the front with no loose of picture like you get on some projection TV. Get it watch it, enjoy it, I don't think you'll go wrong. I'm very pleased with the proformance of this set and would buy another in a minute if I had to do it over.

Product Description
At larger screen sizes, TVs based on DLP technology are much more affordable, yet are slim and lightweight compared to standard CRT TVs. DLP technology also offers superior picture quality, lower power consumption, no phosphor "burn-in", and a longer product lifetime.
Amazon.com Product Description
These days, a room-filling picture doesn't have to mean a room-filling TV. Gateway's technologically amazing 56-inch DLP (Digital Light Processing) rear-projection set is high-definition ready and offers some of the most versatile features ever housed in a television. And since it's only a fraction of the depth of traditional rear-projection TVs, you'll have more space in your living room to ensure optimal viewing for the whole family. The TV weighs only 123 pounds, too, so it's easier to position than many smaller-screen CRT sets.

The Benefits of HDTV |
| |
|
|
|
Standard TVs (SDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the interlaced scan method, which creates a picture with alternating lines of information. |
| |
|
|
|
Enhanced-definition TVs (EDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the progressive-scan method, which creates an image using consecutive lines of information for a crisp, flicker-free picture. |
| |
|
|
|
High-definition TVs (HDTVs) display a maximum of either 1,080 interlaced lines or 720 progressively scanned lines for the sharpest possible image. | |
|
|
DLP technology offers a slimmer and lighter-weight design over traditional projection TVs. |
Developed by Texas Instruments, DLP technology uses an optical semiconductor, called the Digital Micromirror Device (DMD), that enables light to be modulated digitally. The result is incredibly precise, high-fidelity picture quality--to the tune of a remarkable 1,000:1 contrast ratio. DLP also boasts lower power consumption, no phosphor "burn-in," and a longer product lifetime. The set's onboard digital scaling engine accepts various computer and television signals and maps them to fit within the set's native 1,280 x 720 pixels; compatible signals display video resolutions up to 1,280 x 1,024, and compatible HDTV signals consist of 480p and 720p (most DTV receivers will scale 1080i outputs to either of these formats).
Picture-in-picture (PIP) lets you watch two programs simultaneously with one image inset in one of six selectable window positions. Picture-on-picture (POP) lets you watch two programs side by side, each with its own (roughly) 35-inch diagonal image. PIP/POP is available when your main video source is set to any mode. For example, you can watch two analog TV programs simultaneously with PIP/POP by using the built-in TV tuners. And one of your two kids, for instance, can watch a movie from a DVD player or VCR in the main window while your other child watches a TV program--all at the same time. Additionally, the transparency and size of the PIP window are highly adjustable.
The TV has two separate headphone jacks, both of which are accessible from the side of the TV. One of these outputs can be assigned to the PIP or secondary side-by-side/POP window, making it possible for two people to use the TV for two totally different activities (e.g., one watches a DVD movie, the other plays a PC game). The set even includes a secondary PIP/POP remote control for this purpose.
Unlike most TVs, this set's PIP source can include progressive-scan DVD inputs and HDTV signals through the component-video inputs. And, the PIP source can be displayed using either 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios. DVI and VGA inputs from things such as a PC can only be displayed in the main window.
Gateway provides a broad range of inputs with independent picture settings, including two component-video inputs, one DVI interface with HDCP copy-protection compatibility, three sets of audio/video inputs that support composite- and S-video (one of which is side-mounted for easy access), and two separate RGB inputs for a PC (with accompanying minijack stereo audio inputs). The side-panel inputs are perfect for occasional hookups such as a camcorder or video-game console.
Stereo speakers with an impressive 15 watts per channel offer strong, clear sound. Bass, treble, BBE High Definition Sound, and audio balance controls let you tailor the set's sound output, while, for more spacious-sounding programs, both SRS and VivaHD3D sound processing simulate surround sound through any two speakers. There's a stereo RCA output with internally selectable fixed or variable level for routing the TV's sound to an integrated amplifier or surround receiver.
The TV supports Microsoft's Media Center PC specification.
What's in the Box
TV, two remote controls, two sets of remote batteries, AC power cord, user's manual, manual for the remotes, and warranty/registration information.
Customer Reviews:
Unrepairable.......2007-05-06
Bought mine in January 2004. Had a minor user manual error at startup that warranted a service visit before we could start using it. After that initial problem, was very pleased with the performance of the set. Outstanding picture quality and our first bulb lasted right at 10,000 hours. But, as mentioned by others the bulb replacement cost was ridiculous. I expected around $200 or less when purchasing the set. No 3rd party supply, so they basically bent you over. I bought my bulb from Visio at the same cost just to keep from handing any more money to Gateway. The color wheel bearing is now getting real noisy in the last few days. Called Gateway for a spare part. They don't sell just the color wheel, you have to buy the optical engine for $2000. Yea, right. Samsung DLP color wheels are $110 and you can install them yourself. I'll check with Visio again.
Looks like anyone who bought this set got screwed. I also went up the chain on their service line and got the Executive Review Team address. I will send my letter, too, but with their company stock at $2/share I don't expect much satisfaction. Gee, I wonder why their stock is so low.... I guess I got a lot more hours/$ than some here, but what a horrible company to basically sell us a $3000 plus throw away TV.
I will NEVER buy another product from Gateway and influence as many people as possible to do the same.
do not buy this item.......2006-10-15
I have had one for 14 months and I am now getting the flashing spoken of in a previous review. It is now a paperweight the flashing first starts a couple hours apart and the time is now that i do not even try to watch this piece of ---- any more. This was my first time buying a TV from what I would call a secondary source and it will be my last. Way to expensive to repair once problem starts your done. and the manufacturer a company called 3G in California did not screew enough people who bought them as Gateways after Gateway fell out of the business of DLP 3G hooked up with ShopNBC to sell the same item as a Gemstar God knows how many suckers they found and sadly for me I was one. PLEASE DO NOT EVEN THINK OF THIS AS A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE theyare just JUNK.
DO NOT BUY THIS...YOU WILL REGRET IT.......2006-06-01
In a nutshell...let's just say we have a 56" paperweight in our living room. I originally LOVED it. Great picture quality. The TV was very good to us. Then the bulb went...$400 for a new bulb. Fine, whatever. THEN, hell broke loose. We noticed that the picture would sometimes flicker white in some spots. We knew it wasn't the bulb. So I called Gateway (another reason not to buy it...Gateway has HORRIBLE support. AND they are dumb as beets). The woman told me that it was the optical lense, and that part cost, gulp, $2,400!!! Now, when we bought this TV 3 years ago, we paid $3,000, why would I pay almost the same price for one part? I then asked her how much it would be to have someone come out a fix it. She said another $500. WHAT?!?! I told her I might as well buy a newer, BETTER TV that won't be so expensive to fix. That's when I spoke to customer service. This was the best part. He said these TVs aren't meant to last more than a year, and that they are meant for people who don't watch that much TV...for people how just like to have it sit and look pretty in their living room. Now, is that the DUMBEST thing you've ever heard? I told him that we love to have people over, to entertain. So we are not allowed to have that size TV? They sold me a $3,000 piece of equipment knowing it was going to break ina year? This shouldn't be happening after only 3 years. Please, don't buy from these people. They are rude, unhelpful, and full of it.
This TV has treated me well!.......2006-05-28
I bought the Gateway 56" rear-projection DLP over three years ago, mainly for viewing the new high-def programming and playing console video games on a BIG screen. I am searching the net now looking for deals on a replacement lamp and came across the TV on Amazon, but the original lamp lasted 3 years and nearly 10,000 hours, believe it or not. The picture has always been great, even in the sunny room I now have it in, and it views very well from most angles, so everyone gets a good seat. The A/V input options are unbelievable and there is a really cool little side panel for easy access. Even though my lamp finally gave out, the image never faded unlike many other high-def sets. The PIP options are great as well. The start-up time is a little slow but you get used to it pretty easily. I also wish that the set had a built in HD receiver, which I expected with the two tuners. My father bought one of these TVs after he saw mine and his has worked very well also. I should mention that we both got deals on these because it was a the time that Gateway was closing its retail stores. I suppose that it the largest negative for this product, the poor customer support of Gateway and their stopping continuance of this cool, economical TV. I think that DLP gives you the most bang for your buck in an HDTV.
I LOVE this TV!!!!!!!.......2005-10-27
I have had this Gateway for almost a year and a half and I can't rave enough about it! I have had no lamp errors...in fact, I've had no errors whatsoever! The features are brilliant, the myriad of hookups and the HD picture...holy COW! I can see faces in the crowd when I watch a boxing match. Football games are simply AMAZING! My boyfriend recently hooked the computer up to it to play one of his videogames and I can't get him off of it! We've hooked the XBox, GameCube and Playstation to it and it's the ultimate videogaming TV. The thing is just HUGE! Our friends always oohhh and ahhh at it when they first see it. Make your friends jealous and improve your TV watching and video gaming. Get this TV!

Amazon.com Product Description
Featuring a revolutionary, V-shaped design, the 56-inch Sharp 56DR650 DLP HDTV makes for a stylish home theater centerpiece. But it also produces stunning video and audio playback thanks to the Texas Instruments advanced DLP (digital light projection) chip and Faroudja video engine. You'll enjoy 480p, 720p and 1080i high-definition viewing right out of the box thanks to the built-in digital ATSC tuner, which pulls HD signals right from the airwaves. You can also connect the set to an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box using either the HDMI or component connections. An analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. You can also use this set to view your PC, with the VGA input.
The 56DR650 features Faroudja's Emmy award-winning DCDi (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing) technology, which helps to eliminate the jagginess found in non-HD video content. FaroudjaÕs unique DCDi algorithm identifies all the moving edges in a scene and adjusts the angle of interpolation at each pixel so that the interpolation always follows the edge instead of crossing it, eliminating staircasing or jagged edge artifacts.
This set has a 135-watt lamp, 1280 x 720-pixel resolution, true 16:9 aspect ratio, and a great 1200:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) The SmoothPicture technology virtually eliminates pixelization that is noticeable on some other types of TVs. The 3:2 pulldown cinema video processing feature detects and compensates film--which is shot at 24 frames per second (fps) compared with video's 30 fps rate--to video for a smooth theater-like experience at home. Other features include picture-in-picture (PIP)
It produces a total of 30 watts of power from the two built-in speakers (15 watts per channel), and the integrated BBE sound enhancement circuitry enhances the mid to high frequencies to create clear crisp dialogue from the TV's internal speakers. It produces virtual surround sound through its two speakers, and can be used as a center channel speaker in a multi-channel surround sound set-up from your home theater receiver. It includes the following line-up of video and audio connection options:
- Composite audio/video (RCA): 3
- S-Video: 3
- Component video: 2
- HDMI audio/video: 1
- PC VGA: 1
- RF: 2 (1 analog, 1 digital)
- Digital audio: 1 optical, 1 coaxial
- Center channel input: 1
Tech Talk
A DLP (or digital light projection) system uses an optical semiconductor called the Digital Micromirror Device, or DMD, which functions as an extremely precise light switch. The DMD chip contains an array of more than a million hinged, microscopic mirrors. By switching these mirrors on and off up to several thousand times per second, a DLP projection system can translate a digital video or graphic source into a projected image with maximum fidelity.

The honey moon is over..........2006-11-09
It was great for 6 months... but please do not... I repeat... do not buy this television. This is a discontinued item. I brought this TV last November 2005 only had it for 6 months. And now it's been nothing but one big headache. This thing started making strange wining noises. And couldn't get any picture. At first they thought it was the lamp that needed replacing. Not!
Still waiting to find out what's wrong with this thing. I know I probably got a defective television. But I wish I would had brought my 61 panasonic TV instead of this thing. Oh well, 2553 down the drain.

The company shares their dream to live a fuller life by providing ways of working smarter and enjoying the rewards of technological advances.
Amazon.com Product Description
Large enough to "wow" you but compact enough for modest-sized homes and offices, Panasonic's PT-43LC14 high-definition liquid-crystal projection TV offers a perfectly flat, 43-inch display in a widescreen (16:9) dimension that's perfect for viewing DVDs and DTV movies in their native aspect ratios. The foot-deep set offers a total of 12 separate inputs, including 4 component-video inputs, a HDMI digital video input for a direct-digital connection with a DTV set-top box, and 1 PC input capable of VGA, SVGA, or compressed XGA resolution (1 rear, 1 front). A handy PCMCIA/SD Memory Card slot lets you hook up your computer for viewing a digital photo slide show.
The set offers a native resolution of 1,280 x 720 alongside high, 400 cd/m2 brightness ensures vivid, exacting images from DVD players and other devices. What's more, Panasonic's Progressive Scan Doubler will upconvert standard interlaced (non-progressive) broadcast and auxiliary signals to flicker-free, 480p resolution.
The PT-43LC14 is considerably less bulky than most rear-projection televisions and consumes less energy. Further, LCD displays don't suffer from misconvergence or flicker, like their CRT counterparts. The Panasonic multimedia display incorporates thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, also known as active matrix, to improve color reproduction, eliminate ghosting, and boost response speed. A matching stand, the TY-43LC14C (shown), is sold separately.
Two-tuner picture-in-picture with split-screen display lets you view 2 programs at once by dividing the screen in half down the middle. Each program is shown at full height, with one program on the left side and the other on the right.
Movie sources get their due with Panasonic's 3:2 pulldown reversal feature, Progressive Cinema Scan. This enhancement compensates for motion artifacts that sometimes result from the telecine process that's used to convert film's 24-frames-per-second to an NTSC-friendly 60 frames per second. Other picture-enhancing features include horizontal and vertical edge correction and a motion-adaptive 3D Y/C digital comb filter, which eliminates "hanging dots" and color rainbow effects in closely spaced patterns.
The set's 2-way stereo speakers are powered by 15 watts per channel, and BBE ViVA HD3D Sound makes sure every program sounds its fullest and liveliest.
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

Customer Reviews:
Great TV, look no further!.......2006-06-06
After seeing the picture postcard like LCD displays in many stores, I fianlly gave in to the temptation of buying a HD LCD tv - and what a tv it is!
I am glad I listened to my friend who has had this set for a year and a half.
Was surprised to see the rating that this tv has on amazon. Looking closer, I found that some of the negative rating were for other Panasonic tv's and not this one. A goof up somewhere.
Singling out any one feature may do injustice to the many this one has to offer. Let me explain each on its own merit:
1. Picture: First thing that would bowl anyone out is the picture quality - crisp picture, great rich colors, excellent contrast, just too pleasing to the eyes. To compare the video from different sources:
a. HD Cable channels: This tv enhanced the clarity of the HD channels even further, when comparing to some of the pictures I have seen in TV stores.
b. Standard TV channels: The TV has a "normal" video mode for watching standard width format SDTV programs. Standard TV channels look very preety good on this TV, easily comparable to my old Sony Trinitron.
Room Lighting effect: The TV has 3 main preset modes for different lighting conditions. Vivid is great in a well lit room. The Normal mode is good in "drawing room" dimly lit conditions. The cinema mode brings home the theatre in low light conditions. Plus, the TV has good manual setting controls to change the picture "look" as per user tastes.
2. Sound: After setting this TV up, I did not feel the need for connecting my Onkyo speakers for a month after listening to the surprisingly good sound from this set. With the speakers lying around and the availability of so many slots for hooking these up behind the TV set, I did make the connection. Luckily my neighbours are on vacation.
3. Looks: The TV, with the matching stand looks stunning. With its low depth, it is as good as a flat panel TV for people who do not want to hang it on the wall.
4. Remote: The remote is very easy to use and has a lot of controls on it. It was easy for my fingers to get used to this one after being trained to use the Sony for so many years.
5. Controls: The TV has manual and auto channel tuning. You would love the search option where by it keeps showing a small window of 3 channels on the side which playing the cahnnel you want to see on the big part of the screen. Thus I do not miss any action while watching the TV guide for what's next!
6. Connectivity: It is easy to hook up the HD box, computer, DVD player, Tivo Xbox and everything else together on this box. It has multiple s-video, component and composite slots.
The TV offers these video connect options to connect the source to the TV. These are listed below in the order of quality, the best listed first:
HDMI
SVGA
Component
S-Video
Composite
7. Extras: SVGA cable is inside the pacakage, saves a few good dollars.
8. Bulb Life: A few reviews here said that the bulb has a short life. They have mentioned a differnt TV model and not this one. Mine has been good since I bought it and my friend has not had to replace it for 18 months now.
9. Computer monitor: I used the SVGA cable to hook my computer to this TV. With a wireless mouse/keyboard set, am able to use my computer without moving a muscle. What I love even more is that I can surf the net and watch my favourite sport together on the same huge screen.
This product is highly recommended!
Excellent TV.......2005-12-03
I've had this set for almost a year and it's been great. The picture is great in Hi-Def and it is good at displaying at non Hi-Def as well. The main complaint others have seems to be the bulb wearing out, mine hasn't yet. And, I think the sound is pretty good.
A nice tv.......2005-08-14
I have to agree with the review Kiril wrote. I'm quite happy with the Panasonic PT-43LC14...I've had it now for 10 months and have had no problems. TV programs can look grainy at times, but I believe this is to be expected with a larger screen. I bought the tv for watching dvds and have been quite happy. The speakers have a bit of trouble with low frequencies in that the speakers will rattle, but I'll be buying a home theatre system one day. There are a multitude of connectors on the back, and you can even connect your computer to the tv. Great for games!
I did purchase the 5 year warranty with the set, so if *anything* goes wrong in that time, it will be replaced for free! It was $475, but worth it IMO, when you consider one of those lamps are $300. Plus the peace of mind is also nice.
Overall, I'm not sorry I purchased this set.
Nice picture, very expensive to maintain.......2005-02-01
Have had PT-40LC12 for two years now and have experienced the same problems other reviewers have mentioned -- 2 lamps in 2 years at $330 each. Now the lamp ballast has gone bad and that will run another $1,000 for parts and labor.
Have heard lamps and lamp ballasts are an issue with all LCD and DLP rear projection, but can only cite my personal experience here.
Nothing but problems.......2005-01-20
I first purchased this TV a few weeks ago. After a week or so, I noticed that on certain cable channels (analog, not digital) the audio was out of sync with the video. This was usually in the range of 0.1 - 0.5 second lead in the audio. Confused, I watched some movies and it did the same thing. Thinking it was a problem with the TV, I had the only person I knew with a truck drive 2 hours to my house to bring it back, we brought it back no problem, got the new TV, that person left, and the TV then wouldn't turn on. Extremely aggrevated, I called the place where I purcahsed it and they agreed to deliver a new one for no charge. I got the new one and it has the same audio out of sync problem as the original, except sometimes it seems worse. This happens on the both the HDMI, and component outputs of the DVD player (and yes I did try a different DVD player). So either the store gave me back the original, or panasonic needs to review their schematics.

Amazon.com Product Description
Turn your dreams of big-screen sports and lifelike movies into reality with Akai's surprisingly affordable PT4299HD projection TV. This giant, 42-inch set offers a widescreen image perfectly formatted for the latest high-definition broadcasts and your favorite DVD movies. The screen accepts full 1080i HD images from DTV set-top receivers and offers stunning, 15-watts-per-channel stereo sound with BBE sound enhancement.
A progressive-scan converter brings standard interlaced (480i) signals--such as those from VCR, non-progressive DVD players, and other devices--to progressive (480p) resolution. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
The PT4299HD's three-line comb filter enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).
Connections include 2 HD-capable component-video inputs, and a translucent onscreen display simplifies setup, even when your program is already in progress.

Great size & excellent HDTV & DVD picture for the price.......2006-04-09
Looked at Plasmas & LCD's -this Akai has much better contrast and blacks and half the price. It's a rear projection CRT-no bulbs to change like DLP's. If you have the room, it's not bad looking either. Only 21" deep and 89 lbs is not bad compared to large 200lb. direct view CRTs. TV should be at eye level or slightly above and 10 -15' from viewer with low or no lights on for best picture. I put it on a sturdy coffee tabe. Akai was known in past for high quality audio components like reel to reel, may now be made by Samsung. Color saturation & balance was excellent out of box. 4 picture modes are available, I found Custom & Standard best to tweak picture with, I found cutting down on sharpness & contrast got a nicer, smoother picture. Hooked up to Charter HD cable box with monster DVI cables & DVD with component cables- gets excellent HDTV & DVD picture, from side angles as well. Hoping for more HD channels to become available as analog (non HD) picture quality is lousy when in DVI input mode as it has to be in "stretch mode" on cable box to fill the whole screen. These 480 or lower broadcasts show 4:3 black bars on side which worries me for burn in problems. I heard that the first 100 hrs of use are most critical to avoid burn in on RPCRTs. Using the TV as the tuner rather than cable box and using its "panorama" option fixes this better though and significantly improves an analog- source picture to "good." Watching sports or anything else in HD is awesome though as monitor displays 1080 input from most of those. Picture seems to get even better as the TV warms up. Very good remote as well. It's S-Video input is essential for decent VCR use. Kmart is clearing these out now for $810 and a very reasonable extra 2 yr protection plan for 50$. For about $900 total with taxes, combined with my surround sound system ( built in sound from TV is very good, by the way), I have a pretty decent theater in my basement!
Liked it at first.......2006-03-17
I got one just like this at Conn's but it was the 52" model. I was really impressed when I got it home. The HD through the component input is beutiful. But here is what you need to watch out for BURN IN in on the side bars if you watch it in 4:3 mode and I am talking less then 3 months with only occasionally watching it with black bars on the side. Akai put in small print on the front page of their manual that they will not warrent any type of burn in. I did call them anyway and they won't do a thing. If you do buy this TV make sure you always watch in 16:9 mode or you too will get side bar burn in.

Why settle for less, when you can get a brand new original Panasonic or Samsung 42 inch plasma TV for Free! I got mine from this web site: http://topdeal.biz/plasma-tv
nothing compares within 1k!!!.......2005-08-17
This is a steal! If you don't have thousands of dollars to waste, this is your answer to prayer. This TV is outstanding though not perfect... but there is nothing to complain about cause you get so much more TV for your money than anything I saw in my weeks and weeks of research. Spend a couple extra bucks to get the component cables cause it takes your picture to a new level! ENJOY
Sleek, slim, great price!.......2005-05-03
When the cable guy walked past our nearly decade old Magnavox 27 inch tv and nonchalantly announced its impending demise, it was time to venture into the brave new world of tv technology: crt, plasma dlp, lcd...hearing about all the new "idiot box" advances made me feel like I was on lsd. As if that weren't bad enough, whatever we bought had to fit in the Arhaus armoire (last year's tax purchase) that's only 21 inches deep. Finally, we found the Akai. With its 42 inch screen, it's a big upgrade from the old set, and a nice transition set while waiting for DLP, Plasma and LCD to get lower in price and iron-out the kinks. At $799 through HH Gregg and Circuit City during sales, it's not gonna break the bank, either.
Pluses: fits where others don't, tweaking the factory presets results in a picture quality that rivals its more expensive, big name counterparts, intuitive menus and remote, no glare. Basically a rebadged Samsung, without PIP.
Minuses: none of the traditional necessary inputs for HDTV. If you want to get HD, you'll need a tuner or digital cable box with built-in tuner, no lenticular cover (the lens screen is particularly fragile and needs careful cleaning), should be on matching stand for best light distribution, sound quality requires a home theater set.
But if you're happy with a larger screen that offers crisp, clear, bright and detailed images when using prog scan DVD players or watching channels like HBO that are truly digital, the Akai's not a bad choice. Especially for the technophobic and budget-minded.

Product Description
OptomaTV's bright, high-contrast screen allows an extremely wide viewing angle. Because HDTV's sharp onscreen images allow viewers to sit closer to the screen, a wide viewing angle lets everyone enjoy the show. OptomaTV's true 16:9 aspect ratio delivers widescreen viewing without distortion or letterboxing. DLP technology also means 4:3 images can be viewed without burning in the screen's edges. OptomaTV's single-chip DLP technology means the onscreen image is always perfectly aligned and will never burn in or degrade like LCD and CRT projection TVs.
Amazon.com Product Description
Optoma's RD65 big-screen, high-definition DLP projection TV, a winner of the CES 2003 Innovations Award, was developed with the latest Texas Instruments HD2 Digital Light Processing technology, which provides unparalleled clarity, color and brightness. The RD65 is the first-ever 65-inch HD2 DLP television, offering a 70 percent larger viewing area than a 50-inch screen. In addition, the set features the most advanced non-reflective screen made with DenseDetail material to increase brightness and clarity while widening viewing angles.
Unlike ordinary projection, plasma, or CRT televisions, the state-of-the-art Texas Instruments HD2 Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology delivers crystal-clear images without fading, distortion, fuzziness, or risk of image burn-in. A DLP chip contains over 900,000 micromirrors, each generating an individual onscreen pixel with fidelity that's as yet unmatched by other display technologies.
The system offers a total of 9 picture formats, including native 16:9 format at 1,280 x 720 resolution and special conversions from traditional 4:3 formatted media. The set offers high contrast (1,500:1) and brightness (400 cd/m2 typical) and a fine-pitch screen (0.15 mm versus the industry average 0.5 mm) to provide ultra-fine detail. A special screen coating virtually eliminates glare.
An onboard Silicon Image DVDO progressive-scan image processor combines the 2 interlaced fields of ordinary NTSC (VCR, DVD, and video camera) signals into a single progressively scanned signal. The result is sharp, steady, higher-resolution images with flicker-free motion.
The RD65 also features picture-in-picture (PIP) and picture-outside-picture (POP, which delivers 2 high-resolution images side-by-side, from any of the set's 13 digital or analog input sources), and front and rear connections (with a complete set of computer, video, and stereo audio inputs).
Overscan is the amount of screen image that runs underneath the outside edges of all televisions. Typically, about 3 or 7 percent of a screen images is lost to overscan. The RD65 features an amazingly low 1 percent overscan, giving you 8 to 23 percent more picture relative to most televisions.
The TV's discrete IR permits high-end home automation systems to control external devices with greater reliability and ease.

Stay away, buyer beware.......2006-08-05
The main problem with this item and I guess any other item carrying the Optoma brand is....Optoma itself. Lack of before the sale support, lack of after the sale support; I should have stayed away when it took them a month to reply to a query I had before the purchase.
TV has been nothing but trouble: It shuts off, refuses to turn on at times wthout the switch off/unplug from the wall/plug back/turn on dance, right now it has developed an uneven vertical line on the right side of the screen. Like all the other problems it has had I was hoping that it would go away but it has been a few days now and it is still there. Do yourself a favor and do a Google search for problems with Optoma TVs and you will get a sense of their support standards.
Folks, spend your money buying a product from another company. In the long run you will get better value for your hard earned money.
Buyer Beware........2006-01-15
Optoma normally make projector TVs. This is their first foray into the actual "normal" television realm and it shows.
First off, the RD65 does not support HDCP (High Definition Copy Protection, a protocol that HD-DVD players and a good majority of HD Cable boxes and Satellite boxes use) and requires a $400 upgrade to use your HDMI/DVI connection. Even after I spent the $400 to upgrade the motherboard, the HDCP protocol was still not supported. After numerous emails to Optoma and promises that they would look into it (with months between their responses to me) there is still no solution or refund for the motherboard.
There is also a problem with the fan and temperature gauge that occasionally causes the TV to shut itself down because it thinks it is overheating. I'm currently awaiting another RMA fix to see if the issue can be resolved.
I cannot recommend a TV that you have to live in constant fear of something breaking, despite the price.
Save your money and go with a company that already has experience in the HD realm and wait for Optoma to get their act together.
A Better Way To Get HDTV.......2005-12-24
First and Foremost, I am biased since I own a Mitsubishi 65" widescreen that can take flash cards in the front and will play mp3 files, wav files, wmv files and all sorts of media if you have a multi media card. Now, my TV isn't as sleek as this one folks, but I've measured the difference and I have about 13 inches of more bulk than this model....lol. Now I don't know about you, but this Optoma is only "HD" ready! For 3 grand......I want "full" HDTV and I can live with a little bit thicker TV. You get all that and more with the Mitsubishi TV's and they cost about a grand less. I paid 2 grand for my TV and It has way more capability than this Optoma.
Incredible HD Picture but..........2005-10-11
I actually have 2 of these TVs. I purchased one for myself and one for my parents in April, from a large warehouse store (I don't want to mention the name here but it's the biggest warehouse store in the country). MSRP was around $3,000 but the TV was on sale for $2,000 plus an additional $300 off (my parents got an additional $200 off because the product sold out quickly and they had to wait an extra month for delivery).
So the Good News: The HD picture quality is excellent (this could also be viewed as bad news because I have Comcast and I'm pretty much limited to about 10 HD channels. As expected, the non HD channels on a 65 inch TV are very grainy, and once you watch HD, you don't want to go back). The RD65 comes with a lot of inputs. 2 Antenna, 2 AVI, 1 SD, 2 HD, 1 PC, and 1 DVI (I'm probably missing a couple but there are a lot). Mine shipped with the DVI input but the new ones come with HDMI. Not much of a difference because 1) the media companies can't agree on an HD DVD standard, and 2) you can buy a DVI to HDMI cable.
Now for the bad news. The remote control IR is slow. This is especially true for Picture in/on Picture (PIP/POP) and screen source changes (ie. switching the screen from Antenna to HD). And when I say slow I mean real slow. There's also a programming issue with PIP/POP. For example, if you're watching an HD show and you want to do POP (btw, POP means two pictures side by side) with an antenna show the channel surfing button on the remote doesn't work correctly. You have to change the focus to the antenna show and then you can use the remote to change channels. Not a big deal, but kinda annoying. In addition, a lot of the PIP/POP features have to be changed with the on screen menu instead of the remote control. That's sort of a pain because the menu overlays what's on the screen for a couple of seconds.
Finally, just yesterday I was at my parents house and I noticed a hi-pitch whine coming from the TV, I don't have this on mine. It's almost inaudible and the only reason I heard it was because I had to mute the TV to answer the phone. With the volume turned up just slightly, the whine is drowned out. I read somewhere that it could be the fly wheel and if so, Optoma will automatically replace the unit. One last thing, the TV does take approximately 30 seconds to power up, and I don't mean you see a dark picture which slowly comes into focus, I mean when you turn the TV on the power light flashes for 30 seconds while the TV heats up and then you get a picture. I don't know if this is true for all HD TVs but this one does that.
Conclusion:
The picture quality, inputs and features on this TV are excellent and for the price I paid, I think I got the best deal possible. There are a couple of minor inconveniences with the remote. If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely purchase this TV.

Amazon.com Product Description
Enjoy the best possible picture in the comfort of your living room with the JVC HD-52Z575 rear-projection TV. Equipped with a brilliant 52-inch screen, the TV displays high-quality 1080i and 720p broadcasts when connected to an HDTV tuner, while also upconverting standard NTSC video sources to 720p resolution using Digital Image Scaling Technology (DIST). The TV also includes JVC's exclusive three-chip HD-ILA system to deliver a vivid, crystal-clear pixel structure (with 1,280 x 720 resolution) that eliminates the "screen door effect" commonly associated with rear-projection systems. Add a 3D digital comb filter for increased clarity, a four-point color management system that adjusts the colors for maximum appreciation, and Digital Super Detail (DSD) circuitry that corrects digital edges for better focus, and you have a state-of-the-art high-definition television that can adapt to future technologies and advancements with ease.
In addition to the technological extras, the TV includes a number of supporting features, such as Natural Cinema 3:2 pulldown (for converting film to video), progressive line doubling, a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, and several additional aspect modes (Panorama, Cinema, Full, and Regular) that vary the picture's dimensions depending on the user's preference. Viewers who want to further customize the picture can choose among Theater, Dynamic, Game, Standard, and TheaterPro settings, or adjust the color temperature to compensate for the room's lighting conditions. Sports fans will delight in the single-tuner picture-in-picture, which lets them watch two games at once either in a large and small inset window or by splitting the screen down the middle. The TV also lets the user freeze a picture-in-picture image for closer examination. Essentials include a sleep timer, V-chip parental control, and a multifunction timer.
The home theater experience demands a quality audio setup, and the HD-52Z575 meets these expectations as well, with dual front-firing speakers, a center channel input, advanced hyper surround sound, BBE high-definition audio, and MTS stereo decoding. The device also connects to almost any type of video component through its multiple inputs, which vary from an HDMI/HDCP digital input for direct digital-to-digital high-definition transfer; two component-video inputs for connecting to a satellite system, DVD player, or HD tuner; three S-video inputs (one front and two rear), four composite inputs (one front and three year), and one RF input. The TV's switchable fixed/variable audio output invites users to connect to a separate stereo system. The unit is also Energy Star compliant.
What's in the Box

Customer Reviews:
Extremely costly to fix "common" problem.......2007-04-16
Our HD-52Z575 was only 18 months old when the DMD malfunctioned (resulting in a split picture w/half of image reversed and color bizarre). It would cost $1000 to fix a $2500 TV--no longer under the one year warranty. The tech says this a "common problem" w/JVC widescreens, and the JVC customer service rep says these TV's were "not designed to withstand being moved from the factory to the retail stores--can't take the 'abuse.'" Buy another brand, and/or buy a very extended warranty. We are throwing a $2500 TV in the trash.
BUYER BEWARE POOR BULB DESIGN AND POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!.......2006-03-15
I have always come to understand that sometimes electronics are faulty (As I was an electronics technician), but the issues I have had with this piece of electronics have far exceeded even my worst nightmare.
Short Version:
-------------------------
-11/06/05 Bought TV at local electronics store (REX Electronics)
-02/27/06 Turned TV on and heard pop, flickering lights on front. Opened bulb casing, bulb is shot (this is after about 400 hours of use, Bulbs are rated at greater than 10x that). Call JVC customer service, they said they would ship out a new bulb 2nd day air.
-03/01/06 Got a voice mail from a JVC rep saying they cannot ship the bulb without my credit card information so as to charge me if I don't return the blown bulb.
-03/02/06 I provide credit card information, am advised that the bulb will ship 2nd day air on 3/3
-03/07/06 No bulb arrives, I contact JVC customer service. I'm told that JVC has "mixed up the good bulbs from the bad bulbs in the warehouse" and that they don't expect to have it worked out until the end of the week. Speak with team leader Eli, he assures me that this will get resolved.
-03/10/06 I am told that the bulb has shipped out on 3/9.
-03/14/06 I received the bulb and replaced the bad bulb. Immediately the entire downstairs of my house begins to smell like chlorine. I turn off the TV and contact JVC customer service. I'm told that the bulb is defective and to send it back. I am also told that the bulbs are on back order and it will take over two weeks to get a new one. I speak with JVC manager Joe Rodiguez, he apologizes but does not budge on the two week replacement. When I ask to speak with Joe's manager, he advised that he did not have a manager, and he could do nothing for me.
I have had a horrible experience with these bulbs, and JVC customer service is unwilling to reasonably appease you if you have bulb problems. I am unsure that JVC can do anything to restore my confidence in their customer service or products at this point. Do yourself a favour and skip the hassle.
I did contact the electronics store that I purchased this television from (REX). I advised the manager that I wished to return the television for a full refund. We'll see where that goes.
BEWARE: LAMP BURNS OUT QUICKLY!!.......2005-12-14
I love everything about this TV - EXCEPT the bulb doesn't last nearly as long as JVC will lead you to believe. We got about 600 hours out of ours vs. the 6000 JVC claims. There are blogs about lamp life and there are people trying to build a class action suit.
The review I wish I had read.......2005-12-07
Read all the other reviews and you will notice that everyone is overly concerned about "brightness". I spent hours in different stores comparing TVs and I too was impressed by the JVCs clarity and contrast; but from time to time the video would turn to a dark scene and I was less impressed.
After reading all these 5 star reviews praising the brightness and after also comparing many TVs at the stores showing videos designed to "brag brightness" I was convinced that this was the TV for me and I bought it. As I mention, I had noticed problems with dark scenes, but I decided that 95% of a movie would be bright and it would never bother me. Mistake.
I have had the TV for 3 weeks; for the first 2 I was very happy, then I rented two movies in a row where several scenes take place at night. I could only see shadows, and I couldn't tell at all what was going on. I couldn't believe that people would make a movie where you could see nothing, so I connected my $80 13-inch TV on which I saw the same scene perfectly; the difference was astonishing.
The problem with this TV is that it can not produce blacks. You will be disappointed every time to watch a movie about outer-space or that takes place in a dark alley or whatever. Instead of having "shades of black" (or grays) it will look to you as if there was a very thin illuminated cloth through which you see the picture. There will be a constant "brightness" in your dark scenes which makes it impossible for this TV to show you anything in those, it simply can't display the shades that it should. It is really bad. ... or maybe you will just think the movie is like that and you will write another 5 star review praising this TVs brightness.
On the other hand, I love how this TV shows bright scenes, it is unbeatable, really, maybe just a plasma does better. But how much value should you really give that? How would you like a car that only drives fast during the day?
I am still thinking what to do, I have another week to return the TV. I hate to pay so much for a TV that works so poorly for some movies, worse than an $80 tv! Are there any better ones out there? I will definitely go check. Now I know that I am very willing to sacrifice a minimal drop in brightness or contrast to get a better overall performance.
Great TV - Terrible Lamp life.......2005-11-15
The TV picture is great but my lamp blew out in 5 months and about 500 hours of use. The lamp is rated to run for 6000 hours according to JVC.
I have also found out online that many people have had the same problem and JVC is failing to acknowledge this problem.
I would caution the buyers that this is potential problem for JVC D-ILA sets in general, not just this model.

Decent dlp for the $.......2005-09-19
I have So far had an issue with the screen where the screens are separating. While this is not noticeable when the tv is on, it is visible when off when looking at it from the side. Since it is not a big deal i think i will just keep the tv as i am sick of having new ones delivered. Caution: a lot of sites will tell you that the tv accepts 720p, this is not true. the only high def signal that the tv can accept is 1080i from a set top box (as high def is not built in).
other info:
No hdmi
Sound is good.
NTSC cable is great
High def is great.
Check out circuit city for a stand. I got a perfectly matching stand there for $200.....(cant remember model #).
If it were not for the issue with the screen i would highly recommend the tv for anyone who does not care about having high def built in, but until they correct this issue, i would hold on on purchasing this unit.

Product Description
Whether in homes, factories, offices, airports, or on the street, it's hard to imagine a place where Philips is absent. What Philips wants is to make your life and work easier - and more fun! And Philips continuously explores new ways to improve products and to offer innovative products to its consumers. Philips. "Let's Make Things Better".PRODUCT FEATURES: High-definition display - 1080i/480p; HD DVI and Component Inputs; Active Control; Eye Fidelity; APAC (Automatic Phosphor Aging Compensation); Multipoint digital convergence; Protective screen filter; Virtual Dolby Surround; Three-line digital comb filter; Two-tuner picture-in-picture; Slim, upscale styling; Home-cinema universal remote with backlighting.
Amazon.com Product Description
With a size that will put the "theater" back in your notion of home theater, this 60-inch, high-definition projection television is capable of producing massive, detailed HDTV signals in all their glory: full 1080i resolution via a digital set-top box (not included). Progressive-scan DVD players are also prime source components for this set, which performs a wealth of picture-enhancing technologies. Display format up-conversion ensures that you're seeing the best image possible, regardless of the source.
Designed to meet the demands of curved CRT faceplates, Philips' 35-point convergence brings with it the accuracy of digital technology for flawless convergence of red, green, and blue electron guns and a superb picture with no colored haloes.
If a video image remains stationary, it can eventually burn a permanent after-image into the screen. Automatic Phosphor Aging Compensation (APAC) periodically shifts your television picture in increments that are tiny but still large enough to blur image retention. Active Control performs continuous picture analysis and maintains control of Automatic Digital Noise Reduction and auto sharpness. A three-line digital comb filter gives you Improved chroma/luminance separation over standard two-line glass comb filters for a difference you can really see.
Eye Fidelity gives you a choice between two different scanning techniques: progressive and interlaced scanning. Progressive scanning doubles the number of visible picture lines per field by displaying all picture frame lines at once, eliminating line flicker. Interlaced mode reduces annoying motion artifacts and helps smooth jagged lines sometimes seen on images of curved and angled surfaces.
The set's dual-tuner picture-in-picture lets you monitor one TV channel while simultaneously watching another. Its 10-watts-per-channel sound system offers both Virtual Dolby Surround and Incredible Surround, processing circuitry that produces the sensation of surround sound without the hassle of installing additional rear speakers. The set uses large, 4-by-6-inch stereo speakers and also features an auto volume limiter to minimize drastic level changes between, say, a TV program and its commercials.
Connections include three each composite- and S-video inputs, two component-video inputs (one HD, one standard), and a DVI direct digital input for use with a compatible DTV set-top box or other DVI device. A set of audio/video outputs lets you integrate the set with your stereo or surround receiver, and a set of side-mounted AV inputs simplifies hookup of a camcorder, gaming console, or VCR.
The 60PW9363's protective screen filter helps prevent accidental damage to the delicate front lenticular screen.

Customer Reviews:
Great Big Screen For The Money.......2004-10-21
I recently purchased the television and have been very pleased by its performance. A direct cable connection works fine but the picture suffers. A progressive scan DVD works good and brings in a nice and sharp 480i picture. However, this philips shines when connected to an High Def. box. The picture is so real i feel like im looking out my window at action in the yard. My small son 3 years old went over to the tv trying to touch the Moose on the screen as it looked real. Its a great tv and the best per inch buy out there right now. I also own a sony 50" lcd HDTV and belive it or not the philips working from an HD box or Progressive scan dvd player beats the sony with a similar hook up. Wish i had found this first and saved the 3,400$ for the sony LCD, ive been watching this while the sony sits turned off in the corner.....
I would advise against!!!.......2004-07-06
Where do I start! I bought this T.V. in december of 2003 for a family christmas present and it lasted 2 weeks before I lost the picture. I called the store and they replaced the t.v. which I thought was very nice but the screen had numerous scratches right out of the box. The manager saw them and said he would fax the order to get it fixed. A month later, a repairperson came to my house but he had the part to fix the picture and not the scratches. He had no knowledge of the scratches but he would place the order to get it fixed.
April rolled around and I lost the picture again on the new tv. I was a little discouraged considering this was not some 100.00 t.v. from Walmart, I paid a lot money for a television that was just not lasting, this was two t.v.'s in four months. I called Phillip's, thankfully I still had a warranty, but I found out they had closed there repair centers. They had a local repair shop come get the t.v. and I asked the Phillips rep. if they got the new screen yet. Now comes the battle!!!
Phillips said they would repair the t.v. but not the screen because they said they never recieved the order. The screens were only on warranty for 30 days and it was 3 months later. I explained to the phillips repair rep. that the store I bought it from faxed the order the same day. She told me that they closed their centers, here in florida, around that time so they do not have that information. Somehow this is my fault and I was told to call there customer service line. I called the number and I was told it was not their problem. I asked to speak to a supervisor, they refused to do it, then I asked for the number to Phillips headquarters which I found out does not exist but I could write a letter to them(still have not heard back from them) keep in mind this is the CUSTOMER SERVICE line. The customer service is based out of the carribean somewhere, I paid a couple thousand dollars for a t.v., had 2 different t.v.'s that could not last 5 months and Phillip's refused to help me.
The end result was I got the t.v. back a month and a half later, turns out it was a manufactures defect, the screen was fixed by the store that I bought the t.v. from because they could not get to Phillips either. It was the most frustrating time I have ever had and now I am going to purchase the extended warranty as I do not trust this t.v.
It is a great t.v. when it works, but I also have a Toshiba big screen that is not HDTV and in four years time I have never had a problem. So in closing I should caution"BUYER BEWARE"
Hands-down, the greatest!.......2004-03-05
I had the unique (yet torturous) pleasure of accompianing my friend to Best Buy where he purchased this tv about a year ago. I have used it countless times since then, and in my opinion it is the finest non-plasma television I have seen.
The screen is absolutely humungous--you don't know 60 inches until you've seen it in person! The tiny picture here does not do justice to this behemoth.
I hope to purchase this television for myself later this year, and I know I will enjoy it as much as I did the first time I saw it in the store. I just hope it will fit through my door!
Great Size and Value.......2003-10-15
I saw the same TV at Best Buy and was happy when I came to Amazon and could buy it for over $600 less. When people come over they think that it is a $5,000 HD-Ready TV.
We are very happy with the size and the value! It is very fun watching DVD's on and the picture looks great!
