Designed to offer a superior large-screen image "without all of the bulk," the Philips 55PL977S Matchline Series Cineos TV gives you 55 inches of screen from a body that's less than 18 inches deep. Cineos screens make use of Philips' patented Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) reflective technology, which frees them to be lighter in weight and smaller in size than current projection lenses or CRT screens. The 55PL977S offers an HD-ready, flicker-free screen with perfect convergence, no visible pixel grid, and no risk of image burn-in.

The set offers native 1,280 x 720 pixel resolution and a multitude of analog and digital inputs, accepting high-resolution pictures from DTV set-top boxes, PCs, DVD players, and other devices, including both 1080i HD signals and 1,280 x 1,024 PC feeds. All standard-definition interlaced video signals are treated to Philips' PixelPlus line doubling, which turns them into near-high-definition (HD) images. By doubling the number of lines and the number of pixels per line, PixelPlus enhances both regular TV broadcasts and DVD inputs for unparalleled sharpness and depth.

Active Control performs continuous picture analysis and maintains control of Automatic Digital Noise Reduction and auto sharpness. A three-line digital comb filter gives you improved chroma/luminance separation over standard two-line comb filters.

The set's double-window, dual-tuner picture-in-picture feature splits the screen into two independent halves, letting you do everything from watching two shows simultaneously to watching one while surfing the other, or scanning channels while keeping an eye on video input one, two, or three. The TV also has single PIP (free positioning), as well as threefold and sixfold side PIPs. In addition, you get photo finish, freeze Main, and freeze PIP. Replay lets you playback the previous few seconds in a PIP screen--if you missed the action, replay it as many times as you want while your program continues in the other window.

The set uses two-way stereo speakers and also features an auto volume limiter to minimize drastic level changes between, say, a TV program and its commercials. A center-channel speaker input lets you use the set as a center--no bulky or costly center-channel required--and a rear-panel subwoofer output makes it easy to hook up a powered sub for deeper-than-deep bass effects or low-end musical authenticity.

A 20-watts-per-channel sound system offers both Virtual Dolby Surround and Incredible Surround, processing circuitry that produces the sensation of surround sound without the hassle of installing additional rear speakers.

Other connections include 3 each composite- and S-video inputs, 3 component-video inputs (2 HD, 1 standard), a 15-pin D-Sub PC connection, and a DVI direct digital input for use with a compatible DTV set-top box or other DVI device. A set of audio/video outputs lets you integrate the set with your stereo or surround receiver, and a set of side-mounted AV inputs with a headphone output simplifies hookup of a camcorder, gaming console, or VCR.

The 55PL977S's protective screen filter helps prevent accidental damage.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars JUNK.......2005-03-09

I first bought this t.v. from a local retailer, the picture and sound were awsome. After a few days I stated having the set power off on its own, and by reading the instuctions I was able to re-set
the t.v., this only worked for a couple weeks. Now the t.v. will not power up at all and the red light is flashing telling you that the set has shut itself down and will not reset. Called Philips and
after talking to the consultant parts were ordered for my set- @ a week and a half later the tech showed up at my house and replaced the parts sent, the t.v. was not fixed. More parts ordered and about another week or two the tech. came back with the new parts and replaced, same result did not fix. At this time
Philips was going to order more parts, I ask for a replacement. Was told they only replace upto 30 days and repair everything after, about 5 hrs later and a bunch of calls I was told they would just replace the t.v. It has been 14 days and per my last talk to Philips no t.v. has been sent because they don't make them anymore. As of now I am trying to get my money back with calls daily to Philips.....Total time t.v. owned is @ 3 months, total time it worked @ 1 month-- I would not suggest anyone looking at this t.v. to buy, Philips is going to discontinue the
t.v. and have no idea how to fix the ones they have sold. It's a shame because the t.v. really looked good when it worked, but for
2,700.00 you would think it would work more than 30 days.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this thing at all costs.......2004-08-24

Today I am sending back the third (yes, third) TV I have had in my home. Issues:

TV the First: spots on screen during black passages, like credits at the end of a film. Dealer reports Philips says there "could be an issue" with dirt in the projection mechanism.

TV the Second: fan comes on and goes off every couple of seconds. This is maddening during soft parts of the program.

TV the Third: DOA. I finally got it to power up, and guess what? Even larger spots than TV the first. Plus, it eventually powered itself down and could not be revived.

This thing IS NOT READY for commercial distribution. Philips has a very good reputation in consumer electronics, but this thing is trash.

I will try a Panasonic at the same dealer.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely pleased.......2004-08-14

I bought this TV without seeing it in a store. none of the stores around me has it in stock. first off, the TV looks great and the picture is as good or better than the Sony LCD rear projection. Menu guide is simple to use. installation is easy. remember that your picture is only as good as your source. the cable where i live is generally poor, but the HBO,Showtime,Cinimax (real digital channels) look great. the HD channels are out of this world. i can not recommend this TV enough.

3 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2004-05-27

I recently purchased (not from Amazon.com) a Philips Cineos 55" HDTV. Please be aware of an issue concerning the picture images. After hooking up the set and turning it on for the first time, I discovered the picture quality was very poor. The screen reflected "rainbow-like" images, almost dream-like. I wanted to eliminate that the cable was causing the pronounced picture distortion, so I hooked up a smaller TV and compared pictures through the use of a splitter. The picture on the small TV was fine while the Cineos was not. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. Now for the good news! I contacted Tweeter, with whom I purchased the TV, and the salesman gave me a "Rapid Response Team" number to call. After the call, Tweeter sent a TV technician to my home. He too confirmed the fact that there was a rainbow effect. Tweeter promptly exchange the TV with a new one the very next day!! I'm happy to say the second Cineos delivers the same outstanding picture quality that I saw in the showroom!!!

3 out of 5 stars its a projector.......2004-04-24

be careful, this is a RPTV (rear projection tv) its not an LCD monitor, it is in the wrong category as of the date of this post.
