Amazon.com Product Description
Philips' gargantuan, 55-inch 55PP9910 is equipped to receive and display the latest high-definition broadcast programming with clarity and vivid color, right out of the box via its onboard ATSC/QAM tuner (though you may need a terrestrial antenna for proper HDTV reception). The set is fully compatible with DTV set-top boxes, too, with a direct-digital HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface), a pair of switchable HD/SD (standard-definition) component-video inputs, and 2 PC inputs.
The set offers a widescreen (16:9) aspect-ratio and delivers 1080i high-definition signals at full resolution and, in fact, renders all input sources--480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i--at 1080i resolution through onboard upconversion technology.
Optimized for dual home theater/personal computing use, the 55PP9910 is what's known as an iHDTV, for interactive HDTV. Interactive television merges traditional television with the interactivity of the Internet, making TV viewing a richer and more engaging experience with applicable channels. To that end, the set's enhanced, DSURF remote control grants "digital-only" channel tuning, passing over SD channels for times when you want to focus exclusively on true high-definition programming.
The set uses Philips HD Optics with cutting-edge processing and display technology. Philips HD Optics covers the 55PP9910's wideband video amplifier, microphosphor CRTs, hybrid projection lenses, a first-surface mirror, and a fine-pitched, high-contrast lenticular screen. Also on hand is APAC (Automatic Phosphor Aging Compensation), a Philips technology that automatically shifts your television picture in very small increments to defray the chances of permanent image burn-in or etching.
You get single-tuner, side-by-side PIP (picture-in-picture) from any source, meaning you can view a DVD image over an HDTV signal (or vice-versa) as well as a VHS signal over an SD TV show, depending on what you have plugged into the set--your choice.
Connections include the above-mentioned HDMI (which is 100-percent DVI-compatible, in case you're already using a DTV set-top box outfitted with a Digital Visual Interface) and 2 HD/SD component-video inputs, 2 PC inputs (1 D-Sub 15-pin, 1 RGB+H/V), 3 each composite- and S-video terminals, and 2 RF coaxial inputs (1 for antenna and 1 for a second antenna, an older VCR, or a cable box).
A coaxial digital-audio output passes Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround signals to a compatible AV receiver and multichannel speaker system so you can enjoy powerful, enveloping surround sound from your free, over-air HDTV broadcast reception. There's also a set of stereo analog (left/right) RCA outputs for use with AV receiver and integrated amplifiers, and for stereo listening the set will fold down Dolby Digital signals to 2 channels.
If you're not set up for multichannel surround listening, the set offers a choice of Dolby Virtual Surround and Incredible Surround to simulate surround sound from any 2 speakers, including those featured in the 55PP9910. The TV's 10 watts-per-channel internal amplifier gives you strong, clear sound, while auto volume leveling minimizes dramatic swings in listening level, a nice feature for nighttime viewing.
