Blazing forth with its huge screen, high style, and bountiful high-tech features, Toshiba's 57H83 TheaterWide HDTV projection monitor is set to render vivid, smooth, and detailed video signals from DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes--you name it. The set's TruView feature combines several enhancements (Black Level Expansion, Fine White, Flesh Tone Correction, and Color Detail Enhancer) to automatically display accurate picture and color details. Also automated, HD Dynamic Contrast continually analyzes picture information and sharpens and deepens those parts of the picture with the most detailed information.

The Benefits of HDTV

Standard TVs (SDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the interlaced scan method, which creates a picture with alternating lines of information.

Enhanced-definition TVs (EDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the progressive-scan method, which creates an image using consecutive lines of information for a crisp, flicker-free picture.

High-definition TVs (HDTVs) display a maximum of either 1,080 interlaced lines or 720 progressively scanned lines for the sharpest possible image.

And since not everything you watch will be high-definition in origin (wouldn't that be nice), CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all video signals (including 480i/p) to 1080i HD. This significantly reduces jagged-line artifacts for a smoother, more natural image. (Selectable 540p, for those who want a progressive-scan image from a progressive-scan source, is available through the onscreen menu.) CableClear DNR+ Digital Noise Reduction circuitry optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable by eliminating video noise (snow).

Meanwhile, DFine high-speed velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction processes RF and composite-video signals for a sharp, clean picture. This advanced filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricate scenes. The TouchFocus digital convergence system creates perfect corner-to-corner focus at the press of a button. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown) circuitry identifies film-based content from DVDs and reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce a movie's original 24-frame rate. This process eliminates artifacts and provides sharp, accurate full-frame progressive images.

Finally, the set's TheaterFine HD super fine-pitch screen uses a .52 mm design to reduce the space between lines on the lenticular screen, thereby sharpening the image. With convenient direct video input selection, you can choose specific inputs right from the remote's numbered keypad--no more scrolling through all the inputs to find the one you want.

The 57H83's arsenal of connections includes a DVI input for an HDTV receiver.

For audio, the 57H83 offers SRS WOW, combining SRS 3D (which creates a wide three-dimensional sound field), TruBass (which boosts bass frequency perception for dramatic low-frequency effects), and Focus (which raises the perceived sound image vertically to clarify voices) to greatly enhance home-theater sound. StableSound maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal, and Toshiba's Sub Bass System (SBS) boosts a program's low-end audio for heightened dramatic impact.

The 57H83 is loaded with connections of all stripes, including a DVI HDTV input, which gives you a pure, uncompressed video connection with your DTV receiver or set-top box (not included). The supplied Illuminated Universal Remote also controls most manufacturers' VCRs and DVD Players, and the set's split cabinet design allows the cabinet to be split in two for ease of delivery and installation.

WE BOUGHT THIS TV IN 42 INCH AND AND WE WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOSHIBA
BRAND PRODUCT OF ANY KIND, THEY SENT OUT PEOPLE TO REPAIR A BRAND NEW TV & THEY PRETTY MUCH GUTTED THE TV AND REPLACED ALL PARTS, AFTER CONTINOUS POPPINGS AND THE MOTHER BOARD REPLACED AFTER CONSTANT FLICKERING AND IS STILL VERY FUZZY, THE ONLY TIME IT LOOKS GOOD IS WHEN A DVD IS PLAYED IN IT. TOSHIBA PRETTY MUCH HAS IGNORED US AND THEY WERE VERY RUDE AND I HAVE A FILE FULL OF REPAIRS TO THIS TV. WE WILL REPLACE THIS AND MOVE THIS TO THE BASEMENT OR GARAGE. I WOULD NOT EVEN GIVE THIS TV AWAY.

Had it since 2003 and it's still going in 12/2005, so no complaints. it's 1080i not 1080p and thats going to be our next set. For the price you cant beat it.

My wife and I were excited at finding such a good TV at a semi-reasonable price ($1900); we had owned a Toshiba 26 inch for 11 years without a hitch. Much like the some of the other reviews, about two months after we bought it; POP! The screen went blank. After a week and a half of waiting, Toshiba sent out repair people and fixed it. They replaced something they called a reflection board. Then, a month later; POP! Same problem. No picture, and now the part is on backorder. No one can tell us when it will arrive. I've been told to FAX a copy of our receipt to them and they will consider replacement. Why do I think that will take even weeks longer? We have a brand-new TV that refuses to work, and Toshiba is being zero help. SHAME on Toshiba for not recalling this piece of JUNK! DO yourself a favor; if you are looking to buy this TV, just keep on looking and save yourself a MAJOR headache!

Bad picture .......2004-08-21

I can't believe this TV received high marks from Consumer digest. The picture in HDTV looks like an Andy Warhol painting. Normal TV also looks very fuzzy. The DNR filter does not seem to be doing anything.

Great TV.......2004-05-17

I looked at many TV's and read many reviews before buying this TV and think the picture quality of this one is among the best. Another important and uncommon feature of this television is that splits into two pieces for easier moving. These 57" rear projection televisions are huge, and if you ever plan on moving them, this feature is important. It's not always possible to get the T.V.s that don't split into some apartments. I was orginally getting a Sony, but the delivery guys couldn't get it into my apartment.

I've had it for a few weeks and am very satisfied so far.

OH MY GOD.......2002-09-06

This was definitely one of the best purchases I have ever made. The clarity of this television will blow you away. One complaint that I have to make is the fact that I had to purchase surround sound after I received the television. This tv with surround sound and a good dvd player will make you want to watch all of your old movies all over again. I am beyond impressed and very happy with the toshiba brand name after making this purchase. (one small note, the green projection lense went bad after a week, but warranty covered it)

I did a lot of research before buying and, for its price range, this TV seemed like the best bang for the buck. When I finally took the plunge it initially looked like I had made a horrible mistake. Right out of the box, the picture was truly horrible. After quickly using a reference disk with calibration patterns to tune the TV, an amazing transformation took place. The picture was absolutely gorgeous!

I've now had this TV for several months, and can honestly say it's been a great purchase. Perhaps the most noteworthy strength is how vivid the colors are. Really, it's virtually impossible to overstate how beautifully and powerfully colors appear on screen. Put "Toy Story" in your DVD player and put it on the screen of this baby and your jaw will hit the floor.

Give yourself a treat and bring one home soon. You'll be glad you did.

I purchased this TV in November after much research online and in the various stores...This was the best set for the price and I could not be more satisfied. After 5 months of owning it, I don't know how I did without it! The picture is clear, the sound is terrific and nicely complements my home theater system...Although leary about spending nearly [$] for a purchase online, I was very happy to save the cost of shipping and sales tax. My only complaint was that the company that delivered the set sent only one person for what is clearly a two person job. I ended up having to help the guy get it into my house.

great widescreen for the price.......2002-04-05

I did a lot of research before buying this widescreen tv. I chose this tv for its price point and features and was I pleasantly surprised at the picture quality. The picture is so sharp and the colors are really vivid. I especially like the 16:9 widescreen format. It is great for watching dvd's and future upgrade to high definition picture. The free shipping was also a plus to be considered, I had no difficulties with the delivery company. This is a great buy.

One of the best views sofar for HDTV.......2003-06-01

Except for some very exspensive CRT projectors this is the best in home HDTV I've seen. On all HDTV imputs, HD-VTR, HD Sat and over the air reception I was awed. Once a true grey scale is done and good sources set, I think you'll have many hours of viewing pleasure. BTW please use good cables, good center channel, other audio gear and surround speakers to get the best from this set.
