Customer Reviews:
a year later..........2006-09-05
my boyfriend bought this player from walgreens for $60 at the recommendation of some work friends. he's been using it on a daily basis for almost a year, & the only problem he seems to have is the playback isn't really made to be turned up too loud. that being said, with headphones it's loud enough to block out the person next to you talking, so it's more than adequate. we use it on walks with a set of small computer speakers so we can both hear & it crackles a little, but overall its great.
pros-small, lightweight, expandable memory option is great, love being able to drag & drop files, very pleased with the fact that a rechargable AAA battery with run it for at least a week running 30min + a day. also, it's fairly dummy-proof. good first mp3 player.
cons-no backlight, volume could go higher using speakers other that headphones, small memory (see expandable memory option,) & personally didn't like the headphones it came with. honestly, those are the only cons i have found so far.
for the record, responding to the guy that said the product in the picture wasn't the unit advertised, it at least looks more or less identical to the one i have. i say "almost" because i have a few things written in different places (ex:"mode" "dsp" & headphone icon are on the back, not the front, & "pocket digital audio player" is under the screen, not on top of it) but the setup is exactly the same. maybe a different version, i'm not sure.
i was pleased enough with this little player that ive ordered the 256mg RD1072 & extra 512mg card for myself in the hopes to take it out when we go rollerblading, maybe my latest obsession, running. it shipped today-i'm hoping for the same luck we have had with this one. if you can get this for a good price, go for it.
Good but............2006-04-02
This is the only MP3 player i own. I got it for christmas in '04. Its really good and its small. It holds about 30 songs on it. and you can but memory cards for it. but after a couple of months, it wouldnt turn out. so i had to ship it out and get a new one. Hey it was free. So i had to re-put my songs on it and i was fine. As of now i cant find mine! I think my brother took it cause he lost his. who knows. If you want a good MP3 Player this is a good one.
Nice Little Player.......2006-01-01
I've had the RCA Lyra for over a year now. It hasn't suddenly stopped working, the skip buttons do work, and I'm generally pleased with it. The only problem I had was with the battery cover. The tab that keeps it in place broke off after I accidentally dropped it. It hasn't caused much of a problem though, nothing a little cello tape couldn't fix. The battery life was good, too. I use the player while I walk to school, which takes 40 minutes in total each day. One AAA battery lasts me an entire month (roughly 20 walking days), using the highest volume setting.
A piece of junk -- BUYER BEWARE.......2005-07-25
If I could rate this lower than 1, I would.
Simply put, this thing is a piece of junk. It is very, very poorly assembled. If you plan to keep it in one spot, never move it or yourself, you'll be fine. However, if you plan to use it jogging or while lifting weights, prepare for its eventual self-destruction in a month or so.
I don't know why, but eventually it becomes completely non-responsive. You can't turn it on. You'll try to shimmy the battery (which is when you will notice how poorly contructed this piece of junk is) which might work one or two times. But eventually the player will just go dead...forever.
A couple people have said this is a good buy in comparison to an ipod. HA! At least with an ipod, you can be confident the player will survive more than a year. And, Apple's support is top-notch. Try to log on to RCA's web site to find trouble-shooting advice and/or an address when you can send the player back for a refund or write a letter of complaint. Non-existent. Yes, it's cheaper than an ipod -- but weigh that in comparison to the fact that you'll be throwing your money down the drain and will end up shelling out the money for a decent player down the line.....
My advice? Skip this piece of junk, save yourself the headache and bother and just buy the ipod right away,
A Piece of Crap.......2005-07-08
First of all the picture of the RCA Lyra 64 MB MP3 player is wrong. What you actually see is a picture of the RCA RD2010 128MB Lyra Flash MP3 Player with FM Tuner. I don't know why Amazon has the wrong picture up there. Anyway, I haven't had the RCA Lyra 64 MB for a year (August04- March05) and it already has fallen apart. Problem 1: The button you use to skip back didn't work. If I was listening to Song #4 and wanted to go back to Song #2, I could only skip forward just to get to #2. Problem 2: The headphone jack was garbage. If I wanted to hear out of both sides of my headphones, I had to position it inside of the jack a certain way. That really had hurt my index finger. Problem 3: The lid to the battery compartment broke, so I had to wrap a rubber band around it so the battery wouldn't pop out. It was annoying having to jog with my right hand looking like it was crippled. Whatever you do, do not buy this MP3 player. You have been warned.

Amazon.com Review
The RCA Lyra 64-MB MP3 player comes with all the amenities you need in a state-of-the-art Internet music player: a 64 MB CompactFlash card, RealJukebox MP3 software, headphones, and a car kit. It's a decent player, but as with all computer peripherals, it has some drawbacks.
When we first unpacked the Lyra, we noticed that it was a little larger than most MP3 players but felt somewhat flimsy and lightweight.
Setting up the Lyra involves two easy steps: First, install the card reader/writer software, and then install the RealJukebox MP3 player software. One potential drawback is you must use the RealJukebox software with the Lyra. This is no big deal if your purchase of the Lyra marks the start of your path down the MP3 highway, but if you already use and prefer one of the other MP3 software programs out there--Music Match, SoundJam MP, or Winamp--you're out of luck. Fortunately, you can easily transfer your MP3 files over to RealJukebox, so it's not a huge loss in the end.
Once you've installed the software and attached the CompactFlash reader drive, you're ready to begin transferring files to the Lyra. The 64 MB card that comes with the player holds approximately an hour of music (one minute of music per megabyte of memory). We easily transferred close to 20 songs onto the Lyra. The transfer process was a bit lengthier than we've experienced with other players, taking close to one minute per song. However, we were able to drag and drop all the files we wanted into the player; then we left it alone to finish the job. We wished the player came with some onboard memory--instead, the only memory available is in the 64 MB CompactFlash card that comes with the player (or any additional CompactFlash cards you purchase).
The Lyra has a backlit display, which is a great feature. You can scroll through each track you've uploaded to the player and view six song titles at a time. While each song is playing, the display shows the name of the song, artist, album title, track number, compression rate, mode, and the elapsed time of the song.
The Lyra's sound quality is quite good for an MP3 player, but we did notice a bit of static when we operated the device next to other electronics products. You can choose any preset DSP mode--flat, bass boost, rock, pop, jazz--or you can opt to set the equalizer yourself, which delivers far superior results. As with most MP3 players, the headphones are worthless, and upgrading to a pair of alternative headphones will make a world of difference in sound quality. We also appreciated the fact that RCA made the Lyra upgradable to other music-compression formats, so you won't get stuck with an out-of-date player down the road.
All in all, the Lyra is a good player that will work for you if you don't have any issues using RealJukebox as your MP3 software and if the lack of onboard memory doesn't bother you.
Pros:
- Easy-to-read, backlit display
- Simple installation process
- Upgradable, can support other compression formats
Cons:
- Slightly flimsy case
- Must use RealJukebox as MP3 software
- No onboard memory

Crap, utter and total crap.......2004-03-07
This is a piece of junk, the screen went out shortly after is was bought. Avoid at all costs.
rca is junk.......2003-01-10
It takes 1 hour to fill the 64mb flash. If Real doesn't crash. You have to format the the memory card each time you use it, because you can't add or delete tracks off the memory. It uses an incripted mpx format mp3's (only 96-128 stereo) and real media (3...quality) must be converted. You can't drag and drop. The files have to be in the "play list". The batteries last 25min. There is no real "off" button. You buy it from RCA's website there is a 10 return policy and it takes 7+ days to mail it. And they won't take it back. The tech support can't handle anything other than "get new batteries". The install for the cardreader lockup the sys and [messed up] the regestry, had to sys restore from Ghost. Had to use install from another reader.
And the pres of RCA won't answer the e-mail I sent to his home AOL address. I will never buy RCA again.
Great Player, Dump the Real Jukebox!.......2002-09-04
I received the 2204 player as a gift. It took me two hours to get the thing to work on my Windows XP. The card drive would ot install from the CD that was included with the player & the real jukebox crashed Windows XP each time I opened it up. I was worried becasue the literature says you absolutely cannot use anything but Real Player to load songs.
After about two hours and just before I chucked the thing out the window and bought an iPod, I went to the Lyra website, downloaded the drivers for the card drive & the drivers for Windows Media player & everything worked.
The machine is simple to use now that everything is talking to everything else. The interface is relatively intuitive.
The major drawback is the price of the media. [$$$] for a 64Mb flashcard! That's as much as a new Rio player & half the price of an iPod!
Would I choose this over the Rio or the iPod? I didn't even know about the Lyra before receiving it as a gift so I don't know. I was leaning toward the iPod. The Lyra seems to work fine and it suits my needs. I would have seriously considered this player based on the price and features.
I can recommend this player if it can be had at a low enough price.
Price is Worth the Real JukeBox Hassle.......2002-07-10
I purchased my RCA MP3 player [on website] after comparing several models on this great Amazon.com web site. The unit, while appearing flimsy, has held up through much more than any of my CD players would take. In comparison to a Samsung model I have tried, the actual recording process to the memory card is MUCH easier, and that goes ditto for "transfering" CD tracks to be put on your MP3 player. I do have to agree that RealJukebox is not the best program out there, but I am VERY happy I bought this unit.
Durable and Easy to Use.......2001-06-28
If you plan on using a MP3 player while exercising, you need to get the Lyra. I freely admit that I am a klutz, and although I have dropped my player probably a good 50 times, it still functions without error and doesn't scratch or crack. The software is easy to use, allowing you to just drag songs from your desktop to the player. This allows you to completely switch all songs easily depending on your mood. Also, I recommend getting the car kit to go allow with this. The Lyra fits about 30 songs on it and I just plug it into my car. This means I have over 100 minutes of my favorite songs and don't have to switch CD's every couple songs.

Decent price, excellent sound quality.......2003-10-03
Sound quality is very good. Juke box software package could be better but over all excellent product and very good on batteries.
Works great.......2003-05-30
I got the Lyra this morning as an "impulse buy," and I love it! I had it working in only a few minutes, and I am only of average intelligence. I also bought a 256MB multimedia card, and I have hours of music -- cheap! Your average primate would have no problem getting this thing running.
This is a horrible mp3 player.......2003-05-20
This product is horrible. The amount of storage for songs is good, but you have to be able to use the player first. After installing the player it would cut off before the download was finished never getting all the songs. Also the computer would never recoginze the player and I would have to reinstall the data every time I wanted to use the player. Overall, you will spend more time trying to get the player working and loading music than you will listening to the player. If I could give it 0 stars I would.

One Tough Machine.......2005-01-15
I have had my lyra for about 3 years now, im a coach bus driver.
to say my lyra has been thru HELL would be an understatement, it has been droped bonched around rained on and frozen more then once, but it keeps going and going and going,
the energizer bunnie has nothing on my lyra. i think finding songs and playing music is a snap, and as for the guy that was complaining about the buttons getting hit, try the little switch on the side marked button lock, it works great to. in closing this little work horse can take what ever you can dish out.
Only OKAY.......2004-12-04
I like to listen to classical music, and the RCA Jukebox is NOT the right MP3 player for classical. It is very hard to hear soft music, as the volume does not go up very high. Also, it is easy to hear the noises on the hard drive. The mP3 player is very bulky. One of the worst parts is that it doesn't work if it gets cold. Even in the summer, it might not work in intense air conditioning. The soft ware that comes with the jukebox is also hard to learn how to use. You have to pay more to upgrade it if you want any of the advanced features! I would maybe try the iPOD mini instead. The 20 GB hard drive is really appealing, but I doubt that that much storage is necessary for the average user.
The low price makes it worth it for some people.......2004-11-16
Good things I have to say: It holds a ton of songs and for the low price it will be worth it for some people. The battery lasts about 8 hours and charges relatively fast. If you like to jog, it won't skip or have problems from rigorous movement. It allows you to make playlists while you are listening to music, which is pretty fun. After I downloaded the right drivers and software, it worked pretty well with my computer, though this may be complicated for some people.
Problems I have had with it: It cuts off the first second of every song, this is the most annoying problem it has. If you have the volumn turned down lower then half, you can easily hear the hard drive noise through your headphones/speakers. It sometimes stop playing and locks up entirely. You can't even turn it off when it does that. The only recourse is to hit the "Reset" button which can only be reached with a safety pin or similer thin object. After adding most of my song library, which was only 15 GB, it made the "Play All" setting unusable, because it takes too long to switch between songs. Even though the headphone design is very comfortable and has good quality sound, after 2 months one of the speakers broke which made them unusable.
I managed to buy this for $35 new from sears, so the extremely low price is the only reason I didn't take it back. If you demand excellence in your electronic products, stay clear of this player.
Amazingly Poor Design.......2004-06-01
I'm going to give this product its deserved kudos in the beginning here so I can saturate the rest of the review with the negative this product also deserves. The windows-friendly removable hard-drive design is nice, and this product is fairly cheap.
Of course, it acts wonky and unpredictable. I would select a folder to play and it would refuse to just play the damned thing. After each song it would stop playing and change the mode to "repeat all". I have no clue why, either. USB 1.1 transfers are painful, and the transfer interface isn't exactly CONVENIENT for overnight transfers. Profiling the player takes an eternity, and you have to do it twice (unless i misunderstood how this thing works).
It's absolutely spellbinding how user un-friendly the case is. what is this case? It's horrible. I can't fathom its purpose. I stare at it night after night, trying to explain to myself what human being could have possibly made such a piss-poor design decision. Ugly. Bulky. Hardly protective. Inhibitive. Obnoxious. Ridiculous. Why? I have some old socks I could have used that might have fit better.
But (forgive me for jumping around) the worst aspect is definately the actual interface. There is no logical system. An iPod, or Rio Riot, has a system. Things are organized based on a hierarchy. Menus are layed out in a coherent pattern. This goes BEYOND learning curves, because accessing your music is just not convenient or intuitive. It's like standing on your head to work your coffee maker.
I have no idea why you'd by this flaky piece of garbage. There are other products in the price range with a better reliability record as well as more features. Don't waste your money.
Good, with some fiddling.......2004-04-08
I was able to get this on close-out at Sears for about $200. So far, overall I'm happy with it (after 2 weeks) and plan to keep it. Here's my 2 cents about it:
Pros:
1. Great sound quality
2. Battery life does last at least 15 hours
3. Organizes well
4. Does resume to last song played--starts at the beginning of the song
5. Metal case, very solid feeling
6. Great accessories included (except the case)
Cons
1. I play mostly WMA files, needed to upload quite a bit of firmware updates to make it work.
2. Needs to be reset now and then--but soft reset still keeps most of your settings (except backlight, equalizer settings)
3. Can get slow during shuffle mode
4. Can slow down when turning off
I purchased this to use in the car with the Belkin Tunecast II. It serves its purpose well, has been reliable after setting up.
A note about the Belkin Tunecasts, "II" seems to be slightly more amplified, but I'm not really that impressed with the clarity of either, as they both have quite a bit of distortion, at least driving around southern california.

Great product for the price.......2003-02-07
I purchased mine ..., and was very happy with it from day one. After installing MusicMatch Plus (already had the basic version, but software included upgrades you to the Plus version for free), I bagan to download MP3's from the internet. My first problem was a strange hissing or ringing noise on some songs, but I soon discovered this was only on those ripped from CD's using Easy CD Creator. When I used MusicMatch to rip, the noise was gone. The sound is excellent - comparable to CD at 128 bitrate. My husband was satisfied with the 64 bitrate, allowing more music on the 64MB card. Downloading even 128MB of music to a CF card took only minutes on my computer (WindowsME), not 45 minutes for half of that as one person said (computer problem!) And the included CF card reader is also useful if you have a digital camera utilizing this media type. The only problem I had was when someone accidentally sat on my player, and the forward button got stuck down.... So I decided to fix it myself, and removed the little piece of brass that activated the forward button, stuck in the down position. It still works, I just can't use the forward button, so I can't use the radio or skip forward a song.
Better than expected!.......2002-05-16
This MP3 player came with more features and peripherals than expected. It is easy to use and the MusicMatch Jukebox software has been great for copying files to memory cards. Any reviews that mention trouble with the software are end-user problems. It is light weight, does not use rechargeable batteries too quickly and I would recommend it to anyone.
Real One Upgrade No Longer Supports The Lyra.......2002-05-14
I basically think that the Lyra is one of the best MP3 players I've owned. I purchased it when it first came out then switched to the Rio (huge disappointment). What I liked about the Lyra is how you could add music to the flash card by clicking and dragging the songs from RealJukebox!! I cannot tell you how disappointed I am now that the upgrade for RealJukebox, which is called RealOne, does not support the Lyra. So far I have been unsuccessful in using MusicMatch to manage the music on the Lyra.
One of the best.......2002-04-18
.... It is relatively small and it has a wonderful backlit display. It also has great hacking abilities because all of its information is on the compact flash card (no memory is built in) you can customize the startup screen (to whatever you can imagine or draw)
The fm radio is great it has good reception and 15 station presets. Now ask for the software it came with, it was good too, but the headphones werent all that. It can compress songs on your computer from whatever the bitrate to 128,96,64,and 32. Unfortunately it cannot go over 128, which doesnt matter because a 320k song would take up alot of space plus the audio quality isnt much different.
When it came to trasfering songs to the card it was fast, assuming all of the songs were at 128, if they werent then it would have to compress them (which longer) but who cares, you dont have to trasfer songs that often. I fit about 30 songs on the card at 96k and the quality is great! dont think so ? then the lyra has a built in graphic equalizer so you can adjust each music channel so it sounds like it playing at 320k. So it poses no problem.
Although it takes 2 batteries it is relatively light and it can fit in you jean 5th pocket (the small one on the right). The remote is good and you can adjust the songs by touch alone, it also has a plethora of play options, repeat, repeat 1, shuffle, shuffle repeat, and like 3 others it has a program option too.
This is a great mp3 player it it better than the rios because to expand them you must buy thier "backpacks" and a 32mb backpack goes for like 50something whereas a 64mb compact flash goes for the same price.
The headphones are a tad thin but who gives great headphones away anyways, I would like it better if they were a little thicker on the padding for my ears but I'll buy a new pair anyways.
This is a great player, it converts the mp3 files to mpx but it has extrodinary abilities to expand considering all of the system data is stored on the card so it is also easy to upgrade. ...
p.s.- many of you are worried on how loud it plays, turn the graphic equalizer to "custom" and it will pound your ears away!
Great for travel.......2002-04-14
My wife and I purchase the Lyra 2 for 2 reasons. The first is that it takes AA batteries. And the second is that it is one of the few players that accepts CompactFlash memory. These two features makes it great for international travel. Our digital cameras and other equipment use AA batteries and CF memory as well so the memory and batteries are interchangable. We also purchased a Brunton solar battery charger for [money] (weighs 7 oz.). So we don't have to purchase batteries or lug around heavy rechargers/ adapters needed in foreign countries. So far, we've purchased 4 additional CF cards (the Lyra comes with one). A local consumer electronics store (Fry's) has 64MB memory for only [money]. So, additional memory is really not a problem. We also found a small case on the SanDisk site that holds the four CompactFlash cards (plus one in the Lyra). Total package: we carry 8 hours of music: one card for each genre (Rock, Jazz, etc.), unlimited power (the sun) and interchangable components. We copy the songs at 96Kbps which is a good compromise between quality and size. And we only copy the songs that we like so it's more like 20+ CDs. The unit has some downsides. However, it works for us.

The big party is tomorrow and you've downloaded all of your favorite tunes but don't want to burn a CD. RCA has the perfect solution - the Lyra Jukebox. You can store 10GB of music (that's a lot of songs!) on the Internal hard disc drive. Quickly transfer your files using the drag and drop feature (drag from your file tree to the Jukebox) and then sync your Lyra Jukebox with your PC. You can also quickly create a custom playlist on the unit. Use the Audio Line-Out to connect the unit to your stereo and choose any of the 9 Play Modes and you are ready to jam. This is so easy you'll be done before you know it. This is one way-cool, gotta-have-it digital audio player! Not only does this awesome device handle MP3 files, it can also be used for portable/movable file storage.
Amazon.com Product Description
The multifunctional RCA RD2800 Lyra Jukebox combines a digital audio player with a 10 GB hard drive, capable of storing any computer file--from graphics to presentations. With its 10 GB hard drive you can store over 150 hours of high-quality audio in MP3 format. Using the new mp3PRO format, which features the same quality as MP3 but with higher compression and smaller file size, the Lyra Jukebox can store over 300 hours of music.
The mp3PRO format compresses standard audio tracks using two separate streams of data without significantly compromising sound quality. An mp3PRO file created at 64 Kbps will sound similar to an MP3 file created at 128 Kbps, and will be half the size.
The Lyra Jukebox features a backlit, multiline display, five equalizer presets, and nine play modes. It comes with a set of stereo headphones. You can also plug the Lyra Jukebox into your stereo using the included line-out cable, or in your car with the included cassette adapter.
Create digital audio files with the included MusicMatch Jukebox software, which also enables you to organize your music library on your PC and create playlists. The Lyra Jukebox connects to your PC via a 1.1 USB cable (included) and is compatible with Windows 98 SE, 2000, Me, and XP.
The Lyra Jukebox is powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, and also includes a DC power adapter for use in the car.
Customer Reviews:
Problems with the unit.......2006-04-06
My unit is about to become a very expensive portable drive. After putting about 4 or 5 gigs of music on the machine, many of the songs stopped functioning. Can't fix the problem and can't find any info on it. I won't buy any more RCA stuff either. Their web site and thompson's web site both don't help
No Customer Support Anywhere.......2002-12-16
Unit functioned and sounded great for the first 4 months. After adding 5G of files the unit stopped functioning and the PC-based repair utility failed to fix the problem. Customer support information is scarce from the 3 or 4 web sites that the RCA site will direct you too. No phone numbers are listed anywhere. My player is dead and will have to be disposed of. I will check out the vendor's web site first before purchase from now on. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER PRODUCT FROM RCA OR ITS SUBSIDIARIES.
Still no mp3PRO support, but decent. Save up for an iPod........2002-10-27
I picked up one of these thinking it would have support for mp3PRO -- but I was sloppy and didn't read the fine print. It's "mp3PRO ready"... meaning it's ready for a firmware update that isn't done yet. Other than that it has been decent to me.
On the plus side:
* Lot of storage
* Doesn't need any software to load - just appears as a drive letter in Win2000. I love that.
* The accompanying headphones are better than most portables - still not truly high quality though.
* Decent price for the storage
On the minus side:
* No mp3PRO support yet
* System crashes a lot with seemingly average jostling - I can't walk to the post office with it in my pocket without the system crashing. It's ok if tossed in a backpack though.
* Audible interference buzz - when the drive light flashes, you can hear it causing a bit of buzz in the headphones.
* The USB port is pretty obscure - I could not find a cable that matches the super small port. If you want to use it at home and work, you either have to carry the cable each way or maybe order another one from RCA
Another point which I have noticed is common with hard-drive based MP3 players, but surpised me when I got this was that ther battery is build in - so there is no way to carry a spare. With 10 gigs of storage, I had visions of extended listening "in the field" but that's just not possible. I love my rechargable AAs but they don't help here.
I have since purchased a 10GB iPod -- also uses a built-in battery -- which is otherwise vastly superior to the RCA, but at a higher price point. I'd recommend saving up for the iPod if you want a high capacity MP3 player if you have the means - but, in a crunch the RCA is not too bad.
An OK MP3 Player.......2002-10-04
I had higher expectations of this MP3 Player. The viewable screen for the songs doesn't show much at all so I had to rename all my songs. You annot scroll to another song while a song is playing. The software that works with the Player doesn't work, at all. When the battery is starting to run out, you finaly see a battery metter but then you have maybe 1 minute before it dies.
It's OK, but ..........2002-09-30
It works fine and sounds fine, but the USB connection is WAY too slow. Perhaps I'm just spoiled by Firewire, but 10 Gigs going through USB 1.1 is so ... annoying.
The iPod, which costs just a little more, is far far more elegant and far far faster.
