Breathe widescreen life into your favorite movies with a big-screen set that won't eat your living room. Samsung's 43-inch HLN467W uses a compact digital projector powered by a single, second-generation digital micromirror device (DMD) that generates brilliant, high-definition video images from a TV housing barely 16 inches deep. Its PC input makes it perfect for both home theater and computer use, and you get 12 additional inputs for all your current and future HD and SD (standard-definition) equipment.

What is DLP?
The DLP processor DLP, or Digital Light Processing, is a technology that bounces a colored light beam across an array of hundreds of thousands of hinge-mounted microscopic mirrors attached to a single chip, called a "micro mirror device" (below, pictured with the head of a pin).
DLP mirrors dwarfed by the head of a pin
Each of the mirrors can be pointed toward or away from the light source thousands of times per second, providing not only minute color detail but also sharper resolution than even LCD displays.
Detail of resolution comparison between LCD and DLP
Looking under the hood, so to speak, the HLN467W creates its images using proprietary digital light processing (DLP) techniques and an array of optics. Its fully digital video design processes--combined with Samsung's DNIe video enhancer--optimizes all analog NTSC and wideband sources, whether VCR, DVD player, camcorder, or TV programming from digital satellite receivers and HDTV tuners. Onboard digital format conversion works with 1080i and 720p HDTV formats, 480p EDTV, and 480i SDTV formats. The system accepts any DTV, analog TV, or XGA computer RGB input. All video signals are converted to a progressive-scan, 16:9 widescreen pixel count (1,280 x 720) for seamless, flicker-free images.

DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology from Texas Instruments is the only display that creates a purely digital connection between a digital video or graphic source and the screen before you. Samsung's DNIe Video Enhancer (or Digital Natural Image) improves all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs. DNIe enhances contrast, white level, and picture detail and incorporates a digital noise reduction to improve lower-quality video.

A DVI interface brings compatibility with digital feeds from the latest-generation cable, satellite, and off-air high-definition receivers for a pure digital picture. The HLN467W also accommodates a computer, with no burn-in or screen-aging issues to worry about. Hang it, mount it, rest it on a stand or wall-unit, and simply move it anywhere--its size and weight allow greater placement possibilities than any other TV design.

Faroudja Film Mode 3:2 pulldown correction senses motion found in unconverted 480i DVD video based on 24 fps film productions, especially important when converting to a progressive video image. The result is an elimination of visible motion artifacts. (This feature is by-passed on 480p, 720p, and 1080i inputs.) Two-tuner PIP with side-by-side split screen enables convenient simultaneous viewing of two TV programs on the TV screen.

The set's 30-watt stereo audio system and two-way speakers offer high-quality audio, while BBE High-Definition Sound processing improves the clarity of live recorded audio programming, soundtracks, and music. The set offers five remote-selectable audio modes for sports, movies, music, speech, and user-defined settings.

The supplied universal remote control operates the TV, DVD, VCR, and a cable box, and V-Chip enables parental control for channel and program blocking of TV programs that incorporate the rating code signal.

Dual HDTV component-video inputs accommodate HD satellite receivers, HDTV tuners, and HD cable boxes that feature component-video outputs (Y, Pb, Pr). These inputs accept 480p, 720p, and 1080i signals. A dedicated DVD component-video input auto-detects 480i or 480 progressive-scan DVD signals. The set also offers three each composite- and S-video inputs and an RF output for use with a DVR or VCR.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice TV!.......2004-03-02

I bought this through my wife's employee discount (She worked at Samsung until last week). I am very impressed with the picture quality though I am only getting over the air signals. Hooked up DVD via component video and the picture quality is impressive. You have many connection options (currently I do not even have that many components). I will try hooking up my PC. Did a lot of research (Extreme Tech and PCNet). I read that some people were disapointed w/ picture quality of regular cable or digital signals. I am not sure what they were expecting. As this is HD ready TV, it truely shines when watching HD broadcasts (according to all reviewers). Personally, I will wait until quality is improved on HD receivers before I go out and buy one- read many complaints of various devices on HD Net.

No complaints. No noticeable annoying fan noise as some had mentioned. Excellent design, slim and light, and outstanding picture quality. Very happy w. our choice.
