Amazon.com Review
The Samsung Yepp Hip Hop is one of the coolest-looking digital audio players around, and we found ourselves offering it up like an excited kid at show and tell. The player's small size and its shiny silver color never failed to impress coworkers and friends, while its excellent sound also drew raves.

The most outstanding feature of the Yepp Hip Hop is its size--only 3.2 by 2.4 by 0.97 inches and 1.7 ounces. It's the size a deck of cards (and just a bit lighter) and fits neatly into a plastic pouch for wearing around the neck. We weren't sure how comfortable the neck cord would be, but a trip to the laundromat with the Hip Hop went off without a hitch. The player was barely noticeable and so light it didn't get in the way of fluffing and folding. Yet the controls were easily reached, and the great sound made the hours of drudgery fly by. Better yet, it never skipped a beat even when it was inadvertently slammed against a dryer a few times.

Of course, with its small size, you're paying a price in memory. This Hip Hop holds only 32 MB of music (another version holds 64 MB), or about 15 tracks at the lowest compression setting. That's plenty for laundromat trips and commutes, but not enough for longer outings. That's where the Hip Hop's SmartMedia slot comes in, with room for flash memory cards for another 64 MB. Anything more than that and you have to turn to another type of player. Sound quality was very good even with the included cheapo earphones--the dynamic range was crisp and had clean tones at high and low ends.

To download music to the Hip Hop, use the included USB cable to access the player's flash memory, format it, and transfer songs. You will need a USB port on your PC and Windows 98 or 2000 (Windows 95 and NT are not USB-compatible); it is also compatible with Mac OS 7.0 and above. Follow the directions in the manual for adding a USB driver to your system.

The Yepp Hip Hop comes with RealJukebox software for ripping CDs, which took quite a bit of tinkering to get it to work right. (Make sure to check security and encoding settings.) The Hip Hop's manual didn't help much and unless you log on to the Internet, you won't have access to RealJukebox help. But once the software was all set up, it took us only about 30 seconds to encode a track into MP3 format, and then another minute or two to move it to the Hip Hop.

Controls on the Hip Hop are basic. The buttons are the size of BBs, which made them difficult to operate at times. The included remote control with backlit LCD adds a few more features, like reverse, hold, and four equalizer settings, but search functions are primitive.

Ultimately, its software and hardware limitations might not make it the best MP3 player deal on the market. But with its cool design, sound quality, and portability, the Yepp Hip Hop more than holds its own as an entry-level MP3 player. --L.E. Klein

5 out of 5 stars I am very happy to own this mp3 player(Silver Color).......2002-09-19

I have just received this unit today. It takes less than 2 minutes to transfer 32MB mp3 songs to the onborad memory using windowsXP, the YEPP explorer from the samsung website, DO NOT INSTALL THE SOFTWARE ON THE CD. I think this player's output is loud enough to enjoy the music on the street or working out. I don't know the battery life but ppl do have good thing to say about it. I have no problem connecting this unit to the computer.(less than 1 mins) and about the belf clif? It is very easy to use and fit perfectly to the player and I have no problem wearing it around.(I do prefer to have an arm band.) The battery door is no trick to open. This is the easiest electronic I have ever used. I don't know why people keep having hard time to operate it. I bought it at 39.99 with free shipping and I am heading to the neweggs.com to get a 25 Dollars 64MB SmartMedia card. Total investment will be around 65 dollars for a 96MB meomry MP3 player with cool apperance. Thumb UP to samsung again. oh yeah, I do own another 99 dollars Samsung Laser printer (8MB). I think I will give them more business in the near future when I buy a new plasma TV or HDTV.

1 out of 5 stars Not compatible with Windows XP.......2002-08-30

If you have Windows XP, forget it. I was on the phone with Yepp Technical Support, as well as RealJukebox Help (Yepp uses RealJukebox software). No one could tell me how to get it working with Windows XP.

5 out of 5 stars samsung jjang!.......2002-08-11

i finally bought this player online after wanting it for a long time. the lack of memory is the only pitfall to this machine, but extra memory slot makes up for it. it is incredibly easy to use, it took me only less 30 min to setup the connection, software and fill the 32 mb...i think its pretty amazing considering i've never used an mp3 player ever before! someone earlier said that it didn't work too well with XP but it worked perfectly for me. one of my favourite things is its not "expensive looking", the design is really fun and someone it convinces me that its less likely to be the target of a theft. i went jogging with it this morning and it was LIGHT! no skip, no burden, no hassle, just continuous music.

1 out of 5 stars Not good at all.......2002-04-27

I got one of these for christmas. It was rather large compared to some of the others in it's price range and the timing of the songs is so inacreate. You have to use 96kbs quility songs for it 2 be acreate, lower quility songs it just takes a guess at the lenght according to the quility. Also it takes an age to copy and delete songs. After about 2 months of having one it broke and the buttons would not work. I got a RCA K@zoo! copys and deletes about 20times quicker and is smaller, more durable and has acreate timing.
