The Creative Labs Nomad II C is one of those gadgets that are so much fun to play with, you find yourself forgetting they're useful, too. When portable MP3 players first hit the market, they were relatively simple devices good for one thing: playing MP3 files. Now, as companies have learned customers want more than just that, today's devices can no longer be described as just MP3 players.

The Nomad II C's most overlooked feature is that of a digital voice recorder. Since voice recordings aren't the memory hogs that music files are, the Nomad II C can record up to four hours' worth. This feature is perfect for dictating messages to yourself or for the fledging journalist recording interviews, and you can even upload voice files from the Nomad II C to your PC.

From an audio perspective, the Nomad II C couldn't have performed any better. The equalizer had good settings, and the ability to program user-defined settings was awesome. Furthermore, a wired remote control and bass-enhanced, behind-the-head headphones completed the package.

MP3 players are great for music lovers on the go. Because they have no moving parts, they're well known for skip-free music. To test the Nomad II C, we loaded it up with some hip-hop and headed down to the local BMX spot in San Francisco. With the player clipped to a belt, we put it through its paces over a multitude of jumps and with more than enough crashes. We did our best to make it skip, but it performed perfectly (though beware--the Nomad II C isn't scratchproof). Only after the battery started to get low (the Nomad II C offers eight to 10 hours of playback) did performance degrade. But this was easily remedied by dropping in a new AA battery.

This version of the Nomad II C has 32 MB of onboard memory, but it does include a slot for SmartMedia memory cards. As additional memory is still relatively expensive, and most of us don't have extra cards lying around the house, there will come a time when you'll tire of the songs on the device. And without the presence of your PC--and no additional SmartMedia cards--you're at a loss.

MP3 music, like everything else technology related, is in constant flux. Recognizing that, the Nomad II C ships with reprogrammable firmware that should enable it to support digital-audio formats and software extensions as they emerge. So, you should be able to enjoy your Nomad II C for years to come. --William O'Neal

4 out of 5 stars Oldie but a Goodie.......2003-11-16

I had bought my Nomad II (32MB onboard) sometime in 2001 for $69. I cannot beleive that I got it for that price and still it stays at that price two years later. It has great sound and with a 128MB card you have plenty of music to last you. It is a great piece and everytime I look to get a new one or a better one, I can't find anything that is much better for the price. I am keeping my mine until the price of MP3s drop drastically.

4 out of 5 stars excellent mp3.......2003-07-27

i love my mp3 nomad IIc. my sister tried mine and had to buy one. it beats working out and having to listen to alot of talking on the radio. i love the ability to download music and re-download to change the music. the only drawback i have found is that my headphones did not last very long. i blew out one side of the headphone speaker and ended up buying a new one. i would like to upgrade my 128mb with a 32mb card but i dont know if its really worth it to do that for one hour more of music. a friend of mine has a rio brand and ive seen an rca brand, these do not compare to the nomad IIc. its has great sound, very compact, easy and convenient to use and download!

5 out of 5 stars Oh Man this is Nice.......2002-04-07

Ive had i think two or three MP3 players and this is the best one ive ever had. Normally i have no luck with computer/electronics but this is as easy as breathing, and for those of you who have trouble breathing, then its as easy as eating. I put a 32 megabyte Smart media in it and it was the easiest thing ive ever done but then the card got stolen, so i got a 64 and that was soo nice, now i can hold 33 songs so wherever i go, im set i recently flew to Washington D.C. and i wasn't mad that i didn't have enough songs at all, the one drawback is, but i think this happens on every mp3 player is that the clock uses the batteries even when it is turned off. You're Welcome.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Entry Level Player.......2002-02-16

If you're not up for paying big bucks for an iPod, this is a great unit. I connected it to my iMac right out of the box and iTunes recognized it's 32mb of internal memory and the 64mb smart media card I added so I could immediately start transferring tunes.

Mine didn't come with phones so I bought some Koss earbuds that have foam earpieces and small tubes that channel the sound into your ears. This was better than other phones I tried because they seal out the outside noise. By tweaking the sound settings on the Nomad llc, I get the crisp highs and nice clean bass. Perfect for my Miles Davis MP3 collection.

I reccomend this unit highly. It has excellent features, small size, awesome battery life, and a great price.

4 out of 5 stars A great little player.......2002-02-13

I bought the Nomad II C from Amazon at Christmas and got a great deal on it, and I only paid $.... The 32MB built-in memory isn't really enough, so I recommend that you add at least another 64MB of memory (Amazon has some great deals on SmartMedia cards too). The sounds quality is brilliant but some don't come with headphones, and the ones that come free aren't that good, so I suggest you get a new set of those too. Only other complaints are that you need to take the battery out to the remove the SmartMedia card (if you need to, say, clean it), and that the instructions on how to use the voice recorder are minimal, if not non-existant. I still haven't figured it.

The best things include the quality of the sound, immense battery life, compact size, easy navigation of the menu and the fact that the headphone jack is tight enough to hold onto the MP3 player if you drop it - almost like a safety cord.

I won't lie - this thing isn't stratchproof, and the lack of a leather case is a bit galling, but the silver finish is great and really makes this MP3 player one of the best going for this kind of price.
