Customer Reviews:
not worth it.......2007-03-27
The rio forge has some nice features like the FM tuner and SD card reader, but it has serious reliablity issues, especially with buttons that stop working. I got this unit for ~$35 refurbished last year, so it was a pretty good deal at the time, especially with an added SD card. The buttons on my player eventually stopped working after half a year, but I was lucky and as able to resolder them without any problems.
The battery life also sucks (a dozen hours or so)
Anyway, by now your better off getting a refurb 2nd gen 1GB shuffle for $50, or a tiny 4g player for a little more than $100.
Seems to be many problems with this piece of junk..........2006-05-24
My problem seems to be in line with many others.
I purchased the Rio 128MB version for my wife. After a few months of gentle use (just past the 90 day warranty) it began turning itself off with just the slightest tap (it's supposed to be built rugged for active people). I tried the online support FAQ but the site was down. The company won't respond to emailed questions. You have to pay for a customer support call and there is no 1-800 number (at least here in Canada). Spend your money on a more durable product from a company that tries to better satisfy it's customer.
iPod FOREVER!!!
Simply great.......2006-04-04
I previously owned a Rio S35S Sport, and after 4 years of non-stop use, it finally bit the big one. I was so happy with my Rio player that I decided to stick with the company and purchase another one. The Forge is the newer, better version of the Rio S35S Sport and I can say, it's even better than its predecessor.
Pros:
I've been using this little guy everyday as part of my daily fitness regimen; hiking, mountain biking, running, and into the gym for serious lifting... you name it, it's been there. It's very durable and on a couple of occasions while biking or running, I've fallen on it giving it some minor cosmetic scratches but no problems with the player itself. I don't know how water-resistant it is, but I've put a good amount of sweat and some drizzle from the rain on it with out experiencing any problems yet. The menus on the LCD are very user-friendly and screen itself is clean, crisp, and can be read even when you're on the move. The battery life is very dependable; on average I change out batteries once every two weeks with regular use.
The sound output is simply great. The bass hits really well, while the treble sounds crisp and clear. When uploading songs, I'd suggest using mp3 files recorded at 96 bit rate to save on storage.
The software is easy to use and install. If you've used a Rio mp3 player in the past, this program will over-write the previous program and it'll be compatable with all the Rios that you might own, thus saving space on your computer. The uploading of songs onto the player takes a little time, but this depends on the speed of your computer. Either way, it's not an issue. The software menu layout is as easy as drag-and-drop and you're ready to go.
Cons:
The radio tuner, much like it's predecessor, is non-existant, which is not a big deal since I don't listen to the radio, but there are downloadable patches on the companies website to upgrade the radio signal. The in-stock earphones aren't that great; I'd suggest finding ones that fit more ergonomically to your head anyway. Storage can hold 20 songs at 182 kbs or 40 songs at 96 kbs, although sound quality is still great at 96kbs. If you need more than that, I'd suggest purchasing an add-on a memory stick, which can be quite cost effective compared to in-memory players.
In all, this is a great player for anybody on the go. If you're a song horde, you'll most likely want to buy an MP3 player with a guady internal memory, but if you're looking for a cheap, no-nonsense player that will last with you during runs, bikes, or even travel, then this is the player for you. The best thing is, this player is much cheaper now that it's been out for a while.
DON'T BUY AT ANY PRICE!.......2005-12-21
Got as a gift. Used twice. Unit continues to turn off at random by itself and won't turn on. Bought 1MB SD card to use which did give additonal memory but as soon as battery life below half seems to want another battery (problem expressed by another post!). Have a charged supply of NiMh batteries.
No recourse since a gift and no receipt.
Forget it!!!!
JUNK.......2005-11-23
I bought this for my wife for a birthday gift to workout with. It never worked from day one. It shut off all the time on its own. I recently downloaded music to it, and it would turn on and off non-stop (like trying to re-boot). I used fresh batteries, with no improvement. It quit working all together. It is now in the TRASH, it may (and I emphasice MAY) have been used for a total of four (4) hours. What junk.....
