Panasonic SV-SD85 e-wear SD Audio/MP3 Player with 128 MB SD Memory Card
Panasonic SV-SD85 e-wear SD Audio/MP3 Player with 128 MB SD Memory Card
Product Description
From the Manufacturer
With wearability and fashionability in mind, the SV-SD85 is one of the smallest SD Audio players available, a mere 1-3/4 inches tall. You can wear it around your neck or put it in the included water-resistant case that straps right onto your arm. The SV-SD85 weighs less than an ounce (without the battery), so it won't get in the way of your active lifestyle.
The SV-SD85 comes with a slim, rechargeable battery that fits right into the body of the unit and provides up to 18 hours of playback. You can get up to 50 hours of playback when using it together with one AAA alkaline battery in the included battery case. That's over two days worth of music with one rechargeable and one AAA alkaline battery.
Play back MP3, WMA, and AAC files with the SV-SD85's built-in triple decoder. The SV-SD85 also comes with SD Jukebox software that allows you to retrieve your existing MP3 and WMA files, and burn CDs into high quality AAC files.
The included SD Jukebox software allows you to organize all your songs by title, artist, and genre. It even has a Mood Analyzer that analyses and classifies music into different categories. You can then instantly select songs by feeling or mood.
The SV-SD85 comes with a 128 MB SD Memory Card to hold all your MP3, WMA and AAC music files. And since the SV-SD85 uses SD Memory Cards, its memory capacity can expand up to the size of the SD Memory Card being used in the player.

Bring out the updated model!.......2005-06-22
Ok, I haven't got one of these, but...
I can't believe they're still selling this 2 year model, the SV-SD85. It's still a great model, but the succeeding model SV-SD100V has been out in Japan for 2 months now, and you may want to wait for that (I am). It has OLED display, D-Sound amplifier, FM tuner, voice recorder (of low bitrate .wav, though), plus a much more elegant design. Same tiny size, except it does not bundle an SD card and is as a result much cheaper (you can get a 1GB card for the list price difference!). And yes, they're still made in Japan. The SV-SD80/85/100 family shares the same high quality amplifiers found in high-end Panasonic MiniDisc or CD players, and they're one of the best sounding MP3 players you can find.
PS: for a low cost introduction to Panasonic's D-Sound digital amplifier, check out the CD player SL-CT520.
Not a beating........2005-05-18
Well, I'm all for seeking out a good product and I applaud the efforts of the reviewers that will not accept an MP3 player that is less than the epitome of perfection in its purest form. That being said, for those of us who just want a classy little player that looks and sounds great with better than average battery life, the SV-SD85 is ideal. Now, if you have read the other reviews you are probably wondering if the software issues are as bad as people claim. I would say that there is definitely a slight learning curve, especially for someone who is not very comfortable using a computer. However- it's really not as bad as they say. Once again, it's not the epitome of perfection, but it's definitely useable. I have transferred hundreds of songs to the player during the time that I have owned it using SD Jukebox 4, and it has not crashed once. (Which makes me wonder if the people who have complained about it have bigger computer problems than just the Jukebox software.) It's a little slower to convert the files first and then transfer them to the SD card through USB 1, but even transferring enough songs to fill a gigabyte card is not as bad as people claim. Be calm, try some feng shui and take a little walk. When you return, you'll have a full SD card and you can go do your thing. Owning this player has been anything but a painful experience and I would recommend it to anyone.
Love the SV-SD85 but hate the software.......2005-03-20
My husband bought this for me in Singapore last month. It's exactly what I wanted. Small, uses cheap SD cards and runs forever. But the software is insane. I keep trying to import my MP3 files and it just keeps crashing. Every so often I get it to take a few more songs.
The mood thing is great. I created playlists by mood which was easy. Just figured out how to get to the playlist today. Hint: Set Mode in the middle, turn on, press FF key, when it says Playlist, press FF key again, then use volume keys to move between playlists. Very intuitive, huh?
Also, I hate having to use the USB reader that came with it to write SD cards. It is very slooooooow. Had to leave it all night to put my songs on the card.
But it runs forever - I was stuck on a flight from JFK to San Diego behind a screaming kid, played songs the whole way. Ahhh...
Panasonic SV-SD85 is a great Mp3 palyer!!!.......2005-02-19
I don't see what all the fuss is about with the software you have to use with the player. I bought the Panasonic SV-SD85 from Amazon. When I received it, I opened it up and took the time to read all of the directions for the Mp3 player and the software. It is really easy to use. If you don't know your way around a computer then you might have problems. The sound quality is great. The size is awesome. I had no problems importing music or uploading it to the SD card. So what, you have to use the SD card reader to write to the card. Just make sure you format the card and rip music to the included software and you're good to go. It's called a little patients, and if you have none then just buy something that is plug and play. It is somewhat expensive, but anything that is really small usually is. You need to take certain things into consideration. The player is really nice, and if you are familiar with computers then you should have no problem with the player.
Someone please hack this software.......2005-02-17
I bought this portible audio player recently as an upgrade for my SD-SV80 model. The feature I was most interested in is the ability to create playlists. What I got, however, was a whole new set of headaches.
First the player itself: It sounds great. It's tiny. It runs forever without recharging - especially when in the case with the back-up battery. It charges easily. It takes SD cards - which I like because they are small and cheap.
Next the interface. It won't play MP3 or AAC files without "SD-ifying" them with a program that transfers them to an SD card (you also HAVE to use the included SD card reader/writer). I can live with that. Yes, kind of a pain, but the hardware was worth it. I really missed the ability to create playlists though - why scroll through 500Mb of tunes to hear the ones you want?
So I invested in the SD85, which supposedly has this ability with the new included Jukebox software. It does - but only between its frequent crashes. THIS SOFTWARE WAS DESIGNED BY DRUNK RODENTS. It's terrible. It crashes frequently. It's so counterintuative that it's worthless. I actually find myself using the old SD80 software to rip and transfer files and I only attempt to use Jukebox when I want to make playlists.
Please do not buy this unit. Supporting Panasonic when they make such bad software is unconcienable. Wait until another brand makes a similarly small unit.
