Amazon.com Product Description

Take your music on the go with the feather-light SanDisk Sansa M240 1 GB flash memory digital audio player, which is bulked up with a surprising amount of features for such a small device. In addition to playing both MP3 and WMA audio files, it also sports an FM radio and digital voice recorder. It supports the Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 and features PlaysForSure support for portable music downloads. And it's powered by a single AAA battery, which will provide up to 19 hours of battery life.

The Sansa M240 can hold 16 hours of CD-quality MP3 tracks on its 1 GB memory. View larger.

Detailed view of the basic controls.

The 1 GB Sansa M240 will hold approximately 16 hours of CD-quality MP3 tracks (encoded at 128kps) or 32 hours of WMA tracks (at 64kbps). It's compatible with MP3, WMA, secure WMA, and Audible audio file formats. The digital FM radio allows you to access local radio stations, as well as preset up to 20 of your favorite stations. With five equalizer types for the FM radio and music player, you can optimize your sound for your favorite style of music, such as, Rock, Jazz, Classical, Pop, and Custom (user-defined). You can also use the built-in microphone and voice recording function to capture interviews, classes, and short voice notes to yourself.

The compact yet robust industrial design offers an easy-to-use interface with an indigo-backlit LCD screen showing ID3 tag information from currently playing tracks (song title, artist, and album, as well as battery level and playlist). Sophisticated music library sorting lets you browse the music in your player by artist, album, song title, genre, year, playlist, and other useful criteria. The AB playback feature allows you to select a start point and an end point within an audio file so you can play that segment over and over--helpful for learning languages.

It's easy to transfer songs to the Sansa--just connect it to your PC via the included USB 2.0 connection cable, where it will appear as a Windows Portable Device on your computer. Then, just drag and drop music files from anywhere on your hard drive or use a variety of music software to move licensed music to the device. The Sansa is compatible with PCs running the Windows XP operating system.

The SanDisk Sansa M240 digital audio player uses PlaysForSure technology. Look for the PlaysForSure logo if you're shopping for a portable music or video device and you want to make sure the digital music and video you purchase will play back on it every time. Match the PlaysForSure logo on a large selection of leading devices and online music stores. If you see the logo, you'll know your digital music will play for sure. Choose from a large number of digital music and video stores, including MTV's Urge, Rhapsody, Yahoo!, MSN Music, MusicMatch, MusicNow, Napster, Wal-Mart Music Downloads, and many more.

4 out of 5 stars 5 Reasons why SanDisk MP3 is better than the iPod.......2007-07-03

I evaluated MP3 players for a while - and at $45 this Sansa M240 player was a steal! The iPod certainly has its advantages (and a ton of marketing!), but here are the top 5 reasons why I prefer this MP3 player:

1) FM Stereo - can program upto 20 channels - iPod does not!
2) Rip songs from any CD
3) Load songs in about ANY format (MP3, WMA, etc)
4) Buy/download songs from FREE from any MP3 website (iTunes??)
5) AAA battery - can buy it anywhere - no need for special charger!
6) Portable - I can play this in the car with a CD adapter - the iPod needs a special contraption ($$$) to play in the car stereo....

okay, so maybe 6 reasons.......

1 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY Disappointed! .......2007-06-30

My wife got this player last year, and after borrowing it, I really started to like it. She bought one for me as a birthday gift in April, and I was really excited to finally have an MP3 player of my own. I noticed immediately that on my player, there was a delay of a couple of seconds between the time I pushed the buttons to select songs and when the songs actually changed... quite inconvenient when driving. (There is NO delay on my wife's player, which must have an older and better version of the firmware, and she absolutely loves hers.)

Even though the delay was annoying, I decided to enjoy my birthday gift. All was well for a week, until it stopped playing music because I needed to synchronize. This is normally not a big deal and should not occur more than once per month. I synched it, but then it stopped playing music and told me to synch again the next day. After that, it just totally stopped working. The screen began to show odd characters and it made a weird noise. We sent it back (the return process at Amazon was flawless) and got another one.

The second one has lasted me a month. It still had a delay, but I decided I'd be able to live with it. I didn't want to make my wife feel any worse than she already did because the first one didn't work right. Last week we synched it with Napster, and I thought it was fine... but today it started saying it needed to be synched again. I got a sinking feeling that this MP3 player was going downhill like the first one. We hooked it up to Napster, but it said there was a problem with the clock in the device. Thinking it might be a problem with Napster, we plugged hers in and it worked perfectly. The problem is obviously with this newer version of the device. I don't know what the clock-reading error means and I don't want to bother, as these devices have caused me so much frustration already. This device simply does not do what I need it to do when I need it to do it, so this is the end of the line for me and the Sansa M240. This one's going back, too. My poor wife feels awful for getting me such a crappy birthday present, and I feel awful for being unhappy with it because I know she wanted to get me a birthday present I'd love. Unfortunately, it just doesn't work. That's the bottom line.

5 out of 5 stars BEWARE : UNIT WILL FREEZE.......2007-06-27

I bought 2 of these for my wife and myself about 3 months ago. After having problems with certain WMA files locking the units up( various file converter programs helped me there) both have permanently frozen. Nothing I have tried will unfreeze either unit, even after severing the on board battery and reconnecting. This is frustrating due to the fact that while these units were working it was a pretty amazing little device for the price. Please read the FREEZE thread at the bottom of the page.

5 out of 5 stars Love it........2007-06-27

works great. I love that I can just copy and paste mp3 or use windows media player and sync wma. I wish I had bought one with more storage space but for the price I can't complain.

5 out of 5 stars great!.......2007-06-27

for the price, it is super awesome. a small player with a large screen and plug and play capabilities. sound quality is good too (replaced stock buds).

3 out of 5 stars worked at first .......2007-05-13

so the player worked at first but after a couple months just broke so i wont be buying anything refurbished again.

1 out of 5 stars Buy an Ipod.......2007-03-16

I bought this and it worked for a week. Very poor quality. Pay the extra and get an Ipod Nano. It's much better for the few extra $.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and effective.......2007-03-15

I have been using this now for the last two years, and I love it! No hoops to jump through to get your music on (and off) your player unlike the other bigger and newer players. You can use this also as a USB drive if you need that quick data dump. The drive connects to your PC (WIN) via the USB port, and if using XP no further drivers to install (WIN9x drivers are provided).

Also don't let the bigger players fool you stating they hold gazillions of songs, its all down to the quality they were encoded at. Sure you could fit thousands of songs on a player if they are encoded at 128 kbps or lower. I found that most of these claims were based on songs encoded at 64 kbps (AM Radio Quality sound).

I like my music at 192 kbps or higher, and at this time I filled it with at least 180 songs.

Drawback, this does not work with the DRM protection scheme that they pack with most of their songs.

The EQ is very nice, and allows the user to adjust the bands rather then having a preset environment that is common in most newer players. So if you want the bass up a notch go for it.

The battery life is very long, I invested into rechargeable AAA batteries, and on average, I get at least nine or more hours out of a AAA batter. This is another nice advantage, your out of batteries, you can stop at any market and pick up AAA batteries and your back in business. Unlike the other MP3 players who require a USB port to charge from.

3 out of 5 stars Good MP3 Player.......2007-03-13

You get what you pay for. It's a great alternative to an iPod. The sound is just as great, and downloading songs is even easier than iTunes. There is no installing of anything and you can download songs to the MP3 from any computer (unlike the iPod). I found this MP3 player to be extremely easy to use. The only complain I have is with its song searching capabilities. It's just not as easy as the ipod. The battery life is really good. I didn't have to change batteries that often. Overall is a good buy for your money if all you are looking for is an easy, simple MP3 player. Great for young kids..if you don't want to spend the money on an ipod.

1 out of 5 stars Constant Issues.......2007-02-12

We bought the MP3 for our 15 year old son and it had issues from day one. We sent it back as the screen was bad. It continually lost songs or would erase whole folders. The control buttons were small and hard to navigate. Their tech department was of little help with issues. We finally got an Ipod instead.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2007-04-21

I got tired of using my son's old mp3 player and I broke down and bought my own. I love it, it holds plenty of songs, its easy to use and it has an FM tuner on it. I can take it to the gym and listen in to whatever they have on tv (using the FM tuner) or play my own playlist. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome product, great features, and a good buy........2005-12-14

So the other day I decided to breakdown and purchase an MP3 player. My first choice was to look at the ipods and see what they had to offer. I liked the ipod shuffle because of its size, but it was lacking. What is great about the Sansa m240 is that it has the same memory, BUT it has a display, FM tuner, and a voice recorder. These were not the main features that caught my attention though. The nice thing about the Sansa m240 is that it takes a AAA battery that lasts about 17-18 hours, and doesn't need the fruity itunes format. I have a ton of MP3's on my PC and I don't want to spend my time converting them in any way. All one needs to do is plug in the usb port and drag the tracks you want. Simple as that. It's a small player and is lightweight. I'm glad they were sold out of the 1gb ipod shuffles because I'm not a big fan of Apple products. Apple is like the metric system in the computer world, it's simple to convert but everyone else is standard.
